This study evaluated the quality characteristics of muffins prepared with different amounts (0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) of moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) leaf powder (MLP). The weight of muffins increased as the amount of MLP increased. The height and pH of muffins significantly decreased as the amount of MLP increased (P<0.05). The moisture content was higher in groups containing 3% MLP. The hardness was higher at 0% MLP. Cohesiveness decreased as the amount of MLP increased (P<0.05), whereas springiness was not significantly different among all samples. Chewiness and brittleness decreased with increasing MLP concentration. Substitution of wheat flour with MLP yielded muffins with a higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and total polyphenol content (P<0.05). Alcohol dehydrogenase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase activity significantly increased upon addition of MLP (P<0.05). In the sensory evaluation, appearance scores of muffins were higher in groups containing 7% MLP, whereas taste, flavor, texture, and overall acceptability scores were lowest in muffins with 7% MLP. Therefore, up to 3% MLP can be incorporated into muffins to satisfy the sensory quality and functional needs of the consumer. Furthermore, this study proposes the possibility of development of various products using MLP.
In this study, a comparative removal of chlorine from aqueous solutions of mulberry leaf powder(MLP) and activated carbon(AC) was investigated. The chlorine removal capacities of MLP and AC were shown as a function of contact time, pH and initial chlorine concentration. Optimum contact time and removal pH value of MLP were determined as 2 hr and pH 10, respectively. Chlorine removal increased with increasing initial chlorine concentration up to 1.3g/L. Both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were suitable for describing the short-term removal of chlorine by MLP and AC. According to Freundlich adsorption isotherms, the maximum removal capacity of MLP(0.264 mg Cl$_2$/mg) was nearly two times greater than that of AC(0.56 mg Cl$_2$/mg). These results suggested that MLP might potentially be used as an alternative to traditional water treatment materials for removal of residual chlorine in drinking water or process wastewater.
The mitochondrial plasmid pMLP1 from a white-rot fungus, Pleurotus ostreatus, is a double-stranded DNA containing 381 bp terminal inverted repeat (TIR) whose 5'-ends are covalently bound by terminal proteins. The plasmid contains two major open reading frames (ORFs), encoding putative DNA and RNA polymerases, and a minor ORF encoding a small, highly basic protein. To identify the DNA binding activity that recognizes the TIR region of pMLP1, gel retardation assays were performed with mitochondrial extracts. A specific protein binding to a region between 123 and 248 nt within TIR was observed. We examined whether the gene product of mORF1 bindes to this region specifically. E. coli cell extract which contains an overproduced mORF1 protein formed a complex specific to the region between 123 and 248 nt. Inclusion of mORF1 protein in the specific complex formed between P. ostreatus mitochondrial extract and TIR was confirmed by a supershift assay using polyclonal antibodies against the mORF1 protein. Our result suggest that the product of mORF1 may function as a terminal region recognition factor (TRF), recognizing an internal region in TIR.

The structure of plasmid mlp1, a linear 10.2kb mitochondrial plasmid of Pleurotus ostreatus NFF A2 was determined by restriction enzyme mapping and partial sequencing. The plasmid encodes at least two proteins; a putative RNA polymerase showing homology to yeast mitochondrial RNA polymerase and to viral-encoded RNA polymerases, and a putative DNA polymerase showing significant homology to the family B thpe DNA polymerases. It also contains terminal inverted repeat sequences at both ends which are longer than 274 bp. A 1.6 kb EcoRI restriction fragment of m1p1 containing the putative RNA polymerase gene did not hybridize to the nuclear or motochondrial genomes from P. ostreatus, suggesting that it may encode plasmidspecific RNA polymerase. The gene fragment also did not hybridize with the RNA polymerase gene (RPO41) from Saccaromyces cerevisiae. The relationship between genes in m1p1 and those in another linear plasmid pC1K1 of Claviceps purpurea was examined by DNA hybridization. The result indicates that the genes for DNA and RNA polymerases are not closely related with those in C. purpurea.

This study represents a numerical research in vibration and buckling of functionally graded material (FGM) beam comprising edge crack by using finite element method (FEM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP). It is assumed that the material properties change only according to the exponential distributions along the beam thickness. FEM and MLP solutions of the natural frequencies and critical buckling load are obtained of the cracked FGM beam for clamped-free (C-F), hinged-hinged (H-H), and clamped-clamped (C-C) boundary conditions. Numerical results are obtained to show the effects of crack location (c/L), material properties (E2/E1), slenderness ratio (L/h) and end supports on the bending vibration and buckling properties of cracked FGM beam. The FEM analysis used in this paper was verified with the literature, and the fundamental frequency ratio ($\overline{P_{cr}}$) and critical buckling load ratio ($\overline{{\omega}}$) results obtained were compared with FEM and MLP. The results obtained are quite compatible with each other.
In this paper, we analyse the noise robustness of MLPs(Multilayer perceptrons) through deriving the probability density function(p.d.f.) of output nodes with additive input noises and the misclassification ratio with the integral form of the p.d.f. functions. Also, we propose linear preprocessing methods to improve the noise robustness. As a preprocessing stage of MLPs, we consider ICA(independent component analysis) and PCA(principle component analysis). After analyzing the noise reduction effect using PCA or ICA in the viewpoints of SNR(Singal-to-Noise Ratio), we verify the preprocessing effects through the simulations of handwritten-digit recognition problems.
This study was performed to develop and evaluate functional prepared with optimum mixing of mulberry leaf and fruit powder using response surface method (RSM). In order to develop the optimized functional Nokdujukr using RSM, mulberry leaf powder (MLP:X1) and mulberry fruit powder (MLF:X2) were set as independent variables, and pH (Y1), sweetness (Y2), viscosity (Y3), L (Y4), a (Y5), b (Y6), color (Y7), flavor (Y8), taste (Y9), overall quality (Y10), TPC (Y11), and DPPH radical scavenging ability ($IC_{50}$)(Y12) were set as dependent variables. The optimum mixing ratio of MLP and MLF was determined to be 3.88 g of MLP and 6 g of MLF. The values of color, flavor, taste, overall quality, TPC, and DPPH radical scavenging ability ($IC_{50}$) of optimized Nokdujuk were 5.20, 5.85, 6.00, 6.22, 330.99 mg TAE/g and 650.10 g/mL, respectively. In conclusion, this study has led to the development of an improved version of Nokdujuk that has antioxidative properties and good sensory evaluation and, will likely serve as a functional meal replacement for the busy modern world.
Background: Endotoxin or lipopolysaccharide(LPS) can prime phagocytic cells such as polymorphonuclear leukocytes, monocytes or animal peritoneal macrophages to generate increased amounts of secretory products such as oxygen free radicals and tumor necrosis factor, which play an important role in developing adult respiratory distress syndrome in gram negative sepsis. Human alveolar macrophages(HAM) are continuously exposed to various stimuli inhaled into the alveoli, and the response to LPS might be different in HAM. Therefore, we investigated the effect of LPS pre-exposure on HAM adhered to plastic surface and A549 cell(type II human alveolar epithelial cell line) monolayer. Methods: HAM were isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from normal lung of the patients with localized lung cancer and esophageal cancer. LPS was exposed to HAM for 2hrs before or after adherence to plastic surface of 24-well Linbro plate and A549 cell monolayer. And then HAM was stimulated with PMA(phorbol myristate acetate) or fMLP(N-formyl-methionylleucyl-phenylalanine). The amount of hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$) production in the supernatant was measured on the principle of peroxidase-dependent oxidation of phenol red by hydrogen peroxide. Results: LPS pre-exposure could not enhance $H_2O_2$ production in neither HAM adhered to plastic surface nor one to A549 cell monolayer. But LPS even in the absence of PMA or fMLP stimulation directly increased $H_2O_2$ release in HAM if added after the adherence to A549 cell monolayer. Conclusion: Endotoxin does not prime HAM, but may directly activate HAM adhered to alveolar epithelial cells. Further investagation will be necessary.
In this study, we applied a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to predict the changes of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ related to environmental factors in agricultural reservoirs in Korean national scale. Data were obtained from water quality monitoring networks of reservoirs operated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Environment of Korea. From the database of the monitoring networks, 290 reservoirs were chosen with variables such as chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ and 13 environmental factors (COD, TN, TP, Altitude, Bank height, etc.) measured in 2002. Based on Carlson's trophic status index, reservoirs were divided into five groups, and most agricultural reservoirs $(TSI_{CHL}\;64.1%,\;TSI_{TP}\;75.5%)$ were in the eutrophic states. The groups were discriminated with environmental variables, showing that COD, DO, and TP were important factors to determine the trophic states. MLP-PSO (Multilayer perceptron (MLP) with PSO for the optimization) was applied for the prediction of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ with environment factors, and showed high predictability (r=0.83, p<0.001). Additionally, the sensitivity analysis of the MLP-PSO model showed that COD had the strongest positive effects on the concentration of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$, and followed by TP, TN, DO, whereas altitude and bank height had negative effects on the concentration of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$.
Ischemia followed by reperfusion in the presence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) results in a marked cardiac contractile dysfunction. Amrinone, a specific inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 3, has an antioxidant activity against PMNs. Therefore, we hypothesized that amrinone could attenuate PMNs-Induced cardiac dysfunction by suppression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced fby PMNs. In the present study, we examined the effects of amrinone on isolated ischemic (20 min) and reperfused (45 min) rat hearts perfused with PMNs. Amrinone at $25\;{\mu}M$, given to hearts during the first 5 min of reperfusion, significantly improved coronary flow, left ventricular developed pressure (P<0.001), and the maximal rate of development of left ventricular developed pressure (P<0.001), compared with ischemic/reperfused hearts perfused with PMNs in the absence of amrinone. In addition, amrinone significantly reduced myeloperoxidase activity by 50.8%, indicating decreased PMNs infiltration (p< 0.001). Superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide production were also significantly reduced in fMLP- and PMA-stimulated PMNs pretreated with amrinone. Hydroxyl radical was scavenged by amrinone. fMLP-induced elevation of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ was also inhibited by amrinone. These results provide evidence that amrinone can significantly attenuate PMN-induced cardiac contractile dysfunction in the ischemic/reperfused rat heart via attenuation of PMNs infiltration into the myocardium and suppression of ROS release by PMNs.
