  • The main reason of applying chlorination is to sterilize microbes existing in the drinking water treatment. But chlorination could lead to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) by the reaction of free chlorine with humic substance in the water. Especially the DBPs including trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), and haloketones (HKs) exist in the tap water. The US environmental protection agency (US EPA) defines that trihalomethanes, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and dichloroacetonitrile among DBPs are probable/possible human carcinogens. US EPA suggests maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for THMs (80$\mu$g/L) and HAAs (60$\mu$g/L) in drinking water. In Korea, THMs in drinking water has been surveyed but DBPs in general has not been studied in drinking water practically. Therefore only THMs have been regulating as criteria compounds since 1990 but neither HAAs nor HANs. Researches on HAAs are yet to be found. HAA formation potentials(HAAFPs) have not been practiced. HAAs depends on the characteristics of water sources by chlorination. In this study, HAAFPs from three distinct sources were investigated by laboratory chlorination experiments. This study was performed to measure the level of HAAs in drinking water in Seoul area. At April 1996, after collecting the raw waters from the three sites with the different properties, the water samples were chlorinated at various conditions(pH 5.5, pH 7.0 and without pH adjustment) in the state of raw water to have 0. 5mg/L of residual chlorine concentration. And the raw water, treated water, and tap water of water treatment were collected to measure the HAAs concentration. The quantitative analysis of HAAs was conducted by US EPA methods.

  • The effects of enzyme combination, pH, acid washing and enzyme treatment sequence were investigated in the hydrolysis of soy protein. Comparing Alcalase vs. Neutrase/Alcalase, it appeared that Neutrase/Alcalase was more efficient than Alcalase alone, as the highest degree of hydrolysis (DH) was seen in Neutrase/Alcalase. A surprisingly high DH (more than 60%) was observed with Flavourzyme in the second hydrolysis. The separation of insolubles from the first hydrolysis had little effect on the second hydrolysis. When the washing water from the first hydrolysis was reused in the next hydrolysis, the DH and protein recovery were increased. The addition of calcium ion showed not so much positive effects by the stabilization of Neutrase on the Protein hydrolysis. The use of carbohydrase and repeated acid washing gave positive effects on DH. The simultaneous treatment using endoprotease and exoprotease with pH adjustment improved DH significantly.

  • This research investigated the effect of $SCOD_{Mn}$ concentrations and pH adjustment at the stage before land application, namely 2nd-aeration treatment stage of liquid fertilizer in the liquid fertilizer treatment process of swine manure on the physicochemical compositions of 2nd-aeration treated liquid fertilizer. The liquid fertilizer used in this research is the alkaline fermented liquid fertilizer of swine manure more than pH 9.0 through aeration treatment (Alkaline fermentation treatment group). About the alkaline liquid fertilizer, phosphate neutralization treatment was conducted with phosphoric acid and it was a phosphate neutralization treatment group. In 2nd-aeration treatment of liquid fertilizer for 30 days, each group was divided into alkaline treatment groups (T-1, T-2, and T-3) and phosphate neutralization treatment groups (T-4, T-5, and T-6) according to early $SCOD_{Mn}$ concentrations. The research results are as follows. 1. As for $SCOD_{Mn}$ reduction rate, the average 29.9% in alkaline treatment groups and the average 36.9% in phosphate neutralization treatment groups were shown and so the relatively high reduction rate was shown in phosphate neutralization treatment groups. 2. After finishing the experiment, the group of the lowest $SCOD_{Mn}$ concentrations was the phosphate neutralization treatment group, T-6 with the lowest inflow concentrations. In case the final goal level of 2nd-aeration treated liquid fertilizer is assumed as concentrations less than $SCOD_{Mn}$ 3,000 ppm, it would be desired that inflow concentrations of 2nd-aeration treatment groups are adjusted less than $SCOD_{Mn}$ 5,500 ppm. 3. As for the persistence rate of nitrogen, the average 29.3% in alkaline treatment groups and the average 38.9% in phosphate neutralization treatment groups were shown and so phosphate neutralization treatment groups showed the relatively low loss rate of nitrogen, meanwhile, in the case of T-P, phosphate neutralization treatment groups maintained high concentrations (average 1,473 ppm). 4. In the event of 2nd-aeration treatment of liquid fertilizer, "alkaline fermentation treatment" condition in 'low phosphate-low nitrogen' type and "phosphate neutralization treatment" condition in 'high phosphate-high nitrogen' type are expected to be favorable.

  • The sedimentation characteristics of ceramic fiber were analyzed when viscosity of the slurry for ceramic paper formation was varied and zeta potential change and degree of dispersion with pH were studied as well. The proper viscosity of the slurry for dispersion of fibers was between 28 and 31 cps. Zeta potential of the slurry was sensitively changed with pH adjustment and showed maximum value of -35~-36 mV at ph 7.5~9.5, which indicated better dispersion of ceramic fiber as zeta potential of the slurry was increased. The sedimentation rate of ceramic fiber in a slurry was reported minimum at the maximum zeta potential. Water content of the casted paper should be lower than 83% after vacuum dehydration for retention of binder and lower than 62% after press rolling for wet paper handling. The obtained ceramic paper had tensile strength and basis weight, $102 kgf/cm^2$ and $98 g/m^2$, respectively.

  • Th-determination by the sebacic acid method was compared with the hydrogen peroxide method. The former is a little more complicated than the latter in the operation and at the same time it requires careful pH adjustment, but the time needed for determination could be decreased greatly by the former. As a result of the comparison between both methods we confirmed that, within ${\pm}$0.08 ${\%}$ of error, when $ThO_2$ was contained $5{\%}$ in the sample, we could use the sebacic acid method with an half time of that required for the hydrogen peroxide method. Thorium in Monazite sand was also determined by both methods and compared. In the case we found, too, that if we permitted the maximum error of ${\pm}$0.08 ${\%}$, we could prefer the sebacic acid method.

  • This research was carried out to find out the possibility of using Faraday's law in analyzing the electrocoagulation system. Bench-scale reactor equipped with aluminum electrode plates was operated using synthetic wastewater which received sodium chloride for conductivity adjustment. Phosphate was added to the wastewater to induce the precipitation with Al. The amount of aluminum dissolved from the electrodes could be predicted by Faraday's law with a difference less than 5%. This difference was greater at a higher electric current, probably due to the increased solution temperature. However, effect of pH on the dissolution of the aluminum was negligible. The result of this study suggested that the operating condition of electrocoagulation system could be developed using the Faraday's law when the pollutant concentration is given.

  • Possibility of utilization of fig as a source of vinegar was tested. Alcohol fermentation was conducted by inoculation of Saccharomyces bayanus into fig juice. After 5 days of fermentation at 27oC, fig wine with alcohol content of 13.6%. Then fig vinegar was produced by cultivation of Acetobacter sp. E which was isolated from fig vinegar. Optimum concentration of alcohol, starter content and fermentation temperature for the acid production were 8~9%, 5% and 27~30oC, respectively. More acetic acid was produced by adding 0.5% of yeast extract and 0.01% of Ca pantothenate. Adjustment pH of culture broth with acetic acid and shaking cultivation method were not effective in higher yield of acid production. Addition of sulfite up to 50 ppm did not inhibit for acetic acid fermentation. Addition of 1% bentonite or 1% kakishibu was more effective for the clarification of fig vinegar than any other clarifying agents tested. During aging and racking, acidity, absorbance and tannin content of fig vinegar decreased, while redness and yellowness increased. Aged and racked fig vinegar showed higher sensory score than non aged one in the aspects of color and overall acceptability.

  • The process of making or cultivating indigo dyes is very cumbersome and complex. The dye extraction and dyeing methods using general plant dye, moth repellent dye, fast acting natural dye, and other dyes are very different. This research investigates the extraction of indigo dye and liquid dye extraction of polygonum(indigo) plants using calcium oxide water. While extracting indigo dye the concentration of purified indigo dye may be controlled by adjusting the pH level. Due to the various uses of dyes the adjustment of surface color must be considered. In regard to the change according to different concentrations of reducing agents, it was found that cotton fabrics and ramie fabrics show the highest color difference at 0.4% and 0.3% respectively. As the reduction temperature increases, the color difference increases as well. The maximum color difference was found to appear at $90^{\circ}C$. Cotton fabrics and ramie fabrics showed 70.55 and 67.01 respectively. The color difference increases as the concentration of dyes increases, but at a concentration of 300%, cotton fabrics was found to show 6.22PB in H value using the Munsell color system, containing purple and blue color. The pH of the polygonum dyes extracted through this experiment were adjusted by adding calcium oxide to the experimental water, without directly adding calcium oxide to the liquid polygonum extract. In a refine state, it was mixed with polygonum extract to extract a more refine and highly concentrated indigo dye. When lye and reducing agents are added to extracted indigo dye and sealed for long-term storage, it can be effective and easily used for dyeing.
