The purpose of this study was to develop a separation method of Zn(II), Cu(II) and Mg(II), by ion exchange chromatography using cation exchange resion (Dowex 50w${\times}$8, 80-100 mesh) and anion exchange (Amberlite IRA-400). Ion exchange resions were packed into 25 ${\times}$ 2cm ID column and flow rate was controlled to 0.30 ml/min. Good eluents for separation of nonferrous metal ions such as Zn(II), Cu(II), Mg(II) were as follow: 0.5M $NaNO_3$ (pH 3.1), 0.2~0.5M HCl + 50~60% Acetone, and 1M HAc + 0.1M NaAcf(pH 3.7) aqueous solution. The mixed solution of 0.1M NaAc(pH 3.7), 0.5M HCl + 50% Acetone were found to be the best eluent for step elution. Analysis of metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. In addition, separated Zn(II) fraction was obtained by eluted with 0.12N HCl and 1.5N $NH_4OH$ aqueous solution. This solution was titrated by the E. D. T. A.
This study was carried out to investigate the wire retention on newsprint process mainly composed of Groundwood Pulp(GP) and Deinked Pulp(DIP) with change of stock mixture ratio according to variation of stock temperature, stock pH, rosin and alum amount. The obtained results were summarized as follows 1. The wire retention was decreased continuously with increasing of stock temperature regardless of stock type. The retention of DIP stock was more rapidly decreased than GP stock. 2. Maximum retention was obtained at pH 5. The retention of GP stock was more rapidly decreased below or over pH 5 in comparison with DIP. 3. Maximum retention was obtained at 2% alum level on GP and GP/DIP=50/50, but 3% alum level in case of DIP. 4. Higher retention efficiency was obtained in case of adding alum after using 1% rosin in comparison with alum only. 5. The retention was mainly affected by fiber flocculation.
This study was conducted to determine the agronomic characteristics of low amylose lines which were derived from induced mutants by T-DNA insertion. The agronomic and physicochemical properties of the low amylose mutants were analyzed and compared with a donor cultivar 'Dongjin' and a low amylose cultivar 'Baekjinju'. The heading date of the low amylose mutants was similar to the donor cultivar 'Dongjin' and yield index of the mutants was 78~92% compared with 'Dongjin'. The amylose content of four mutants in brown rice was ranged from 16.1 to 16.7%. Among low amylose mutants, 'P50-4-4-5' was lower 3.6%(13.3%) than those of 'Dongjin'(16.9%) in amylose content of milled rice. The grain length of 'P50-4-4-5' was similar to the donor cultivar, however, thousand grain weight(18.9g) was lighter than those of 'Dongjin'. The score of alkali digestion in brown rice of 'P50-4-4-5'(5.5) was lower than that of 'Dongjin'(6.8) and similar to 'Baekjinju'(5.8). The gel consistency of 'P50-4-4-5'(84mm) in milled rice exhibited that was longer than 'Dongjin'(76mm) and 'Baekjinju'(81mm). The result of eating quality showed that 'P50-4-4-5'(78.8) was higher than those of 'Dongjin'(60.3) and 'Baekjinju'(67.2). Thus our data suggest that 'P50-4-4-5' will facilitate the development of a new cultivar with low amylose rice.
Objective: The present research was conducted to evaluate the interactive effect of dietary concentration of calcium (Ca) and 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25OHD3) on the performance, blood composition and digestibility of laying hens. Methods: A total of 540 Hy-line brown laying hens aged 61 to 70 weeks were randomly allotted in a 3×3 factorial arrangement, consisting of three levels of 25OHD3 (0, 25, and 50 ㎍/kg) and three levels of Ca (3.5%, 4.0%, and 4.5%). All diets had basal concentration of 3,000 IU/kg of vitamin D3 including the 2,800 kcal/kg of metabolic energy and 16% of crude protein. Results: The results showed that interactive effect (p<0.05) between Ca and 25OHD3 was such that dietary 25OHD3 linearly increased interleukin-6 at all levels of Ca inclusion. Interaction (p<0.05) occurred with the highest parathyroid hormone in laying hens that received dietary concentration of Ca (3.5%) with 25OHD3 (50 ㎍/kg), and Ca (4.0%) with 25OHD3 (50 ㎍/kg). Egg production and egg weight significantly (p<0.05) increased in the 4.5% Ca group compared to the 3.5% to 4.0% Ca groups. Egg shell thickness and tibia bone length also increased (p<0.05) in groups fed a high-Ca diet (4.0% to 4.5%). Phosphorus digestibility significantly (p<0.05) increased along with dietary Ca level. Among the tested 25OHD3 groups, higher (p<0.05) egg production and tibia thickness were present in hens fed 50 ㎍/kg of 25OHD3. Furthermore, Ca digestibility serum Ca and 25OHD3 were significantly increased in group offered 50 ㎍/kg of 25OHD3. Conclusion: The results gathered in this study indicate that dietary concentrations of 4.0% to 4.5% Ca and 50 ㎍/kg 25OHD3 improve the performance of hens from 61 to 70 weeks of age.

In this study, the antibacterial, antioxidative effect and component analysis of Pinus koraiensis leaf extracts were investigated. MIC values of the ethyl acetate fraction from P. koraiensis leaf extracts on P. acnes, S. aureus, P. ovale, and E. coli were 0.06 %, 0.25 %, 0.13 % and 0.50 %, respectively. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of the ethyl acetate fraction on P. acnes, P. ovale. and S. aureus was more prominent. The aglycone fraction of P. koraiensis leaf extracts ($22.93\;{\mu}g/mL$) showed more higher free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity ($FSC_{50}$). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity ($OSC_{50}$) of P. koraiensis leaf extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}$-EDTA/$H_2O_2$ system was investigated using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The 50 % ethanol extract ($0.70\;{\mu}g/mL$) showed the most prominent ROS scavenging activity. Also the ethyl acetate ($1.04\;{\mu}g/mL$) and the aglycone fraction ($1.43\;{\mu}g/mL$) showed very high antoxidant activity. The protective effects of extract/fractions of P. koraiensis leaf extracts on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The P. koraiensis leaf extracts showed cellular membrane protective effects in a concentration dependent manner ($5{\sim}50\;{\mu}g/mL$). TLC and HPLC chromatogram of the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from hydrolysis of P. koraiensis leaf extracts revealed 2 main bands (PK-4, PK-6) and peaks (peak 1, peak 2), which were identified as kaempferol-3-O-glucoside (PK-6, peak 1) and kaempferol-3-O-arabinoside (PK-4, peak 2) by LC/ESI-MS/MS, respectively. These results indicate that extract/fractions of P. koraiensis can function as antioxidants in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by scavenging ROS, and protect cellular membrane against ROS. Extract/fractions of P. koraiensis can be applicable to new cosmeceuticals for antioxidant, antiaging, and antibacterial activity.
A total of 220 adult male mice (18-20g) of the S.M. strain were divided into ten experimental and control groups. The total-body X-ray irradiation doses used were 50 r, 100r, 200r, 400r, 600r, 800r, 1,000r, 1,200r, 1,400r, and1,600r. The respiratory arrest (mortality) caused by each irradiation doses were observed for 30 days. Relationships between irradiation doses and survival time and percentage of response were examined. From this experiment, a formula was obtained to express the relationship among three factors, which may be presented as follows : {{{{{{{{P= { 10} over { SQRT { 2 pi } } INT _{ - INF }^{ p'} e-{(p'-50)^2 } over {200 }dp···(a) p'=100 LEFT { t^0.3- LEFT ( { { 16.9965} over {D-60 } } RIGHT ) ^{ { 1} over {2.5 } } } / LEFT { LEFT ( { 26372.43} over {D-81.86 } RIGHT ) ^{ { 1} over {2.5 } } -( { { 16.9965} over {D-60 } } RIGHT ) ^{ { 1} over {2.5 } } ···(b) p= { (D-60) t^0.75-16.9965} over {0.2186 t^0.75 +263.55434 }····(c) }} {{{{P= { 10} over { SQRT { 2 pi } } INT _{ - INF }^{ p'} e-{(p'-50)^2 } over {200 }dp···(a) p'=100 LEFT { t^0.3- LEFT ( { { 16.9965} over {D-60 } } RIGHT ) ^{ { 1} over {2.5 } } } / LEFT { LEFT ( { 26372.43} over {D-81.86 } RIGHT ) ^{ { 1} over {2.5 } } -( { { 16.9965} over {D-60 } } RIGHT ) ^{ { 1} over {2.5 } } ···(b) p= { (D-60) t^0.75-16.9965} over {0.2186 t^0.75 +263.55434 }····(c)

Purpose: STAT3 is an oncogene that regulates critical cellular processes, and its constitutive activation has been demonstrated to correlate with biological and clinical features in many types of human malignancy. Materials and Methods: In this study, STAT3 activation was assessed in variable benign and malignant chondroid tumors in bone by immunohistochemistry using a monoclonal antibody specific for $tyrosine^{705}$-phosphorylated STAT3 ($pSTAT3^{tyr705}$). Results: Among conventional chondrosarcomas (n=17), three cases(50%) of grade III chondrosarcomas were pSTAT3-positive. All grade I and II chondrosarcomas were pSTAT3-negative. This pSTAT3 positivity according to the histologic grade was statistically significant (p=0.0432). Two cases(50%) of clear cell chondrosarcomas were pSTAT3-positive. Six cases (50%) among 12 benign chondroid tumors(6 enchondromas, 3 chondroblastomas, and 3 chondromyxoid fibromas) were also $pSTAT3^{tyr705}$-positive. Conclusion: In conclusion, STAT3 activation is associated with higher tumor grade in conventional chondrosarcomas. Our results suggest that STAT3 is activated in a subset of benign and malignant chondroid tumors, and may support the extension of the cancer stem cell hypothesis to include tumors of cartilaginous lineage.
This study was conducted to isolate the cellulolytic bacteria able to grow on LB- Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) agar trypan blue medium from the mixed forest and Larix leptolepis stands. Three bacterial strains with high activity against both CMC and xylan were isolated. Both API kit test and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the three different isolates belong to the gene Bacillus. Therefore, the isolates named as Bacillus sp. EFL1, Bacillus sp. EFL2, and Bacillus sp. EFP3. The optimum growth temperature of Bacillus sp. EFL1, EFL2, and EFP3 were $37^{\circ}C$. The optimum temperature for CMCase and xylanase from Bacillus sp. EFL1 were $50^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH of Bacillus sp. EFL1 xylanase was pH 5.0 but the optimum pH of CMCase from Bacillus sp. EFL1 was pH 6.0. The optimum temperature of CMCase and xylanase from Bacillus sp. EFL2 was $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. The optimum pH of CMCase of Bacillus sp. EFL2 was 5.0, whereas xylanase showed high activity at pH 3.0-9.0. The optimum temperature for CMCase and xylanase of Bacillus sp. EFP3 was $50^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH for CMCase and xylanse was 5.0 and 4.0, respectively. CMCases from Bacillus sp. EFL1, EFL2, and EFP3 were thermally unstable. Although xylanase from Bacillus sp. EFL1 and EFP3 showed to be thermally unstable, xylanase from Bacillus sp. EFL2 showed to be thermally stable. Therefore, Bacillus sp. EFL2 has great potential for animal feed, biofuels, and food industry applications.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution and correlation of accommodative lag with refractive error. Method: We had tested the clinical refraction and the accommodative lag in clinically normal 49 young adults (total 98 eyes) aged 18 to 25 years without abnormal binocular function. Monocular and binocular accommodative lag were tested with 0.50 D cross-cylinder lens and near vision test chart which had cross-hairs after full correction of LogMAR visual acuity over 0.05. Results: There was no statistical differences in monocular accommodative lag between right ($0.64{\pm}0.64$ D) and left eye ($0.63{\pm}0.64$)(p=0.858). The accommodative lag of male was higher than female and the range of the value was broader than female in binocular accommodative lag (p=0.015). The wider the inter-pupillary distance was, the higher the accommodative lag was (p=0.003). However, there were no differences with age (p=0.800) and dominant eye (p=0.402). The ranges of accommodative lag of low, middle, and high myopia were 0.75 ~ -0.25 D, 1.25 ~ -0.50 D, and 1.50 ~ -0.75 D, respectively, and the regression was 'y = -0.03953x+0.09205'. Conclusions: These data suggest that clinically normal young adults with high amounts of refractive error have more variable accommodative lag and increased spherical equivalent refraction.

This study evaluated the nutritional compositions of dropwort (Oenanthe javanica) extracts depending on the ethanol concentrations. Extractions were performed with hot water, 50% ethanol, 80% ethanol, and 95% ethanol for 4 hours. Changes in yield, as well as total carbohydrate, crude protein, crude fat, total dietary fiber, free sugar, and mineral (Na, Fe, and Ca) contents were investigated. The highest extraction yield of ethanol extracts was 44.67% in 50% ethanol extract of dropwort. Crude protein content reached a maximum of 6.70% while carbohydrate content was highest at 19.6%, in 50% ethanol extract of dropwort. Crude fat content irregularly increased according to ethanol concentration as compared with hot water extract. Total dietary fiber content decreased in ethanol extract, but these changes were not concentration-related. Total sugar contents were highest in hot water and 80% ethanol extracts. Vitamin A content of ethanol extract was higher than that of hot water extract. Mineral (Na, Ca, and Fe) contents were significantly reduced in ethanol extract according to concentration of ethanol, whereas mineral contents were higher in ethanol extract than in hot water extract. Based on this study, ethanol extract of dropwort is more efficient for development of desirable processed foods.
