Korea launched Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Satellite (GEMS), a UV/visible spectrometer that measure pollution gases on 18 February 2020. Because satellite retrieval is an ill-posed inverse solving process, the validation with ground-based measurements or other satellite measurements is essential to obtain reliable products. For this purpose, satellite-based OMI and OMPS total column ozone (TCO), and ground-based Pandora TCO in Busan and Seoul were selected for future GEMS validation. First of all, the goal of this study is to validate the ground ozone data using characteristics that satellite data provide coherent ozone measurements on a global basis, although satellite data have a larger error than the ground-based measurements. In the cross validation between Pandora and OMI TCO, we have found abnormal deviation in ozone time series from Pandora #29 observed in Seoul. This shows that it is possible to perform inverse validation of ground data using satellite data. Then OMPS TCO was compared with verified Pandora TCO. Both data shows a correlation coefficient of 0.97, an RMSE of less than 2 DU and the OMPS-Pandora relative mean difference of >4%. The result also shows the OMPS-Pandora relative mean difference with SZA, TCO, cross-track position and season have insignificant dependence on those variables. In addition, we showed that appropriate thresholds depending on the spatial resolution of each satellite sensor are required to eliminate the impact of the cloud on Pandora TCO.

Effects of precipitation and cloud cover on high ozone days are examined by investigating the precipitation and average cloud cover before the ozone peak time within a day. High ozone days above 100 ppb in the Greater Seoul Area(GSA) for the ozone season from May to September are chosen for the analyses in terms of the surface meteorological data during 1990~1997. The result shows that the effect of precipitation on the rise of ozone concentration is definitely negative so that ozone concentration could not rise above 100ppb immediately after precipitation. But, the effect of cloud cover is associated with the variations of other meteorological parameters. The number of high ozone days with "zero" cloud cover is rather less than that with cloud cover of 1 to 4 since temperature is usually lower in "zero" cloud cover days. Furthermore, ozone concentration can rise above 100ppb even with full cloud cover when the wind is weak and the temperature is high.temperature is high.

The ozone concentrations measured at the National Air Monitoring Stations between 1990 and 1995 were reviewed to detect any anomalies in the measurements. By screening the cases, in which variation of the ozone concentration from the previous measured value is greater than 75ppb, 125 station-days were identified as the test cases for the anomaly test. Historical and parallel consistencies of the measured concentrations were examined by plotting data for each test case. The detected anomalies can be classified into four categories; single outliers, anomalous variations during the startup period, baseline rises, and fluctuations in th diurnal variations. Anomalies were detected in as many as 80 cases among 125 test cases. Because of these anomalies, the number of hours exceeding 100ppb in the areas other than the Greater Seoul Area(GSA) could decrease from 157 to 107. Further studies for developing the methodology for eliminating the abnormal monitoring data are warranted for the data from the National Air Monitoring Stations are official to the both inside and outside of the country.

In the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA), ozone ($O_3$) concentration is still higher than in other urban areas in developed countries. In order to reveal the current state of photochemical air pollution and to provide data for validation of chemical transport models, vertical profiles of meteorological parameters and ozone concentrations were measured by ozonesonde in two field campaigns: the first one, during the change of season from wet to dry-cold (November 2011) and the second during the dry-warm season (March 2012). Unlike previous similar field campaigns, ozonesonde was launched twice daily. The observation data were used to analyze the production and distribution of ozone in the convective boundary layer. The observation days covered a wide range of meteorological conditions, and various profiles were obtained. The evolution of the mixing layer (ML) height was analyzed, revealing that ML evolution was faster during daytime in March 2012 than in November 2011. On a day in November 2011, the early-morning strong wind and the resulting vertical mixing was observed to have brought the high-ozone-concentration air-mass to the ground and caused relatively high surface ozone concentration in the morning. The amount of produced ozone in the MCMA was estimated by taking the difference between the two profiles on each day. In addition to the well-known positive correlation between daily maximum temperature and ozone production, effect of the ML height and wind stagnation was identified for a day in March 2012 when the maximum ground-level ozone concentration was observed during the two field campaigns. The relatively low ventilation coefficient in the morning and the relatively high value in the afternoon on this day implied efficient accumulation of the $O_3$ precursors and rapid production of $O_3$ in the ML.
A Multiple Regression Method (MRM) is used for the first time with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to estimate formaldehyde (HCHO) Vertical Column Density (VCD). For a 3.5-year period from January 2005 through July 2008, HCHO VCD estimation is investigated in cities over Asia in two categorized areas: (1) Major cities in Northeast Asia (Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo), (2) Major cities in Southeast Asia (New Delhi, Dhaka, and Bangkok). In the Major cities in Northeast Asia, there are good agreements between HCHO estimated by the multiple linear regression method ($HCHO_{MRM}$) and HCHO measured by OMI ($HCHO_{OMI}$) (0.78 < $R^2$ < 0.82). However, in Major cities in Southeast Asia, there were poor agreements between $HCHO_{OMI}$ and $HCHO_{MRM}$ (0.24 < $R^2$ < 0.39). In addition, an unbiased assessment of the MRM performance using modeling and validation groups shows that the performance of the MRM based on separate modeling and validation groups is comparable to that using all the data for deriving Multiple Regression Equations (MREs). This study demonstrates that MRM can be an alternative tool for HCHO estimation in certain areas over Asia.

Total Vertical Column Density (VCD) of $NO_2$, a key component in air quality and tropospheric chemistry was measured using a ground-based instrument, Pandora, in Seoul from March 2012 to October 2013. The $NO_2$ measurements using Pandora were compared with those obtained by satellite remote sensing from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) where the intercomparison characteristics were analyzed as a function of measurement geometry, cloud amount and aerosol loading. The negative biases of the OMI $NO_2$ VCD were larger when cloud amount and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) were higher. The correlation coefficient between $NO_2$ VCDs from Pandora and OMI was 0.53 for the entire measurement period, whereas the correlation coefficient between the two was 0.74 when the cloud amount and AOD were low (cloud amount<3, AOD<0.4). The low bias of OMI data was associated with the shielding effect of the cloud and the aerosols.
Background: Injury is one of the major health problems in South Korea. Few studies have evaluated both intentional and unintentional injury when investigating the association between exposure to air pollutants and injury. Objectives: We aimed to explore the association between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and years of life lost (YLLs) due to injury. Methods: Data on daily YLLs for 2002~2019 were obtained from the the Death Statistics Database of the Korean National Statistical Office. This study estimated short-term exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <10 ㎛ (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 ㎛ (PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3). This time series study was conducted using a generalized additive model (GAM) assuming a Gaussian distribution. We also evaluated a delayed effect of ambient air pollution by constructing a lag structure up to seven days. The best-fitting lag was selected based on smallest generalized cross validation (GCV) value. To explore effect modification by intentionality of injury (i.e., intentional injury [self-harm, assault] and unintentional injury), we conducted stratified subgroup analyses. Additionally, we stratified unintentional injury by mechanism (traffic accident, fall, etc.). Results: During the study period, the average daily YLLs due to injury was 307.5 years. In the intentional injury, YLLs due to self-harm and assault showed positive association with air pollutants. In the unintentional injury, YLLs due to fall, electric current, fire and poisoning showed positive association with air pollutants, whereas YLLs due to traffic accident, mechanical force and drowning/submersion showed negative associations with air pollutants. Conclusions: Injury is recognized as preventable, and effective strategies to create a safe society are important. Therefore, we need to establish strategies to prevent injury and consider air pollutants in this regard.
In this study, the sensitivity of the mid-infrared radiance to atmospheric and surface factors was analyzed using the radiative transfer model, MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN6)'s simulation data. The possibility of retrieving the land surface temperature (LST) using only the mid-infrared bands at night was evaluated. Based on the sensitivity results, the LST retrieval algorithm that reflects various factors for night was developed, and the level of the LST retrieval algorithm was evaluated using reference LST and observed LST. Sensitivity experiments were conducted on the atmospheric profiles, carbon dioxide, ozone, diurnal variation of LST, land surface emissivity (LSE), and satellite viewing zenith angle (VZA), which mainly affect satellite remote sensing. To evaluate the possibility of using split-window method, the mid-infrared wavelength was divided into two bands based on the transmissivity. Regardless of the band, the top of atmosphere (TOA) temperature is most affected by atmospheric profile, and is affected in order of LSE, diurnal variation of LST, and satellite VZA. In all experiments, band 1, which corresponds to the atmospheric window, has lower sensitivity, whereas band 2, which includes ozone and water vapor absorption, has higher sensitivity. The evaluation results for the LST retrieval algorithm using prescribed LST showed that the correlation coefficient (CC), the bias and the root mean squared error (RMSE) is 0.999, 0.023K and 0.437K, respectively. Also, the validation with 26 in-situ observation data in 2021 showed that the CC, bias and RMSE is 0.993, 1.875K and 2.079K, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the LST can be retrieved using different characteristics of the two bands of mid-infrared to the atmospheric and surface conditions at night. Therefore, it is necessary to retrieve the LST using satellite data equipped with sensors in the mid-infrared bands.
