  • As a prioiminary study on usage of metabolic charateristics of the indicator species for indirect estimation of environmental water quality, effects of environmental pollutants on survival, filtration and oxygen consumption rates in Corbicula aeana were investigated at 17$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ in 10 day afrer treatmint of pollutants. In case of glucose and complex fertilizer, the survival rates of the clams were 100% without any relation to individual sizes and water temperatures. In small sizes at $25^{\circ}C$, the survival rates of the clams by NH$_{4}$CI concentration were shown 95% at 10 mg/1 and 15mg/1, and 90% at 20mg/1, respectively. But the survival rate was 95%at 20 mg/1 of NH$_{4}$CI concentration in small size at 17$^{\circ}C$. The higher filtration and oxygin consumption rates were shown in small size at higher water timperatures(over $25^{\circ}C$), and generally filtration and oxygen consumption rates decreased with increase of glucose, complex fertilizer and NH$_{4}$CI concentrations, respectively. In general, effects of filtration and oxygen consumption rates at NH$_{4}$CI concentrations were shown slightly larger than those of glucose and complex fertilizer.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze and make comparison between the physical responses such as oxygen consumption rate, heart rate, and EMG-measurement for lifting tasks. Lifting activities with three different working frequencies(5, 8, 11 lifts/min) and two different weights(10, 20kg) for a lifting range(from floor to 76cm height) were studied. It was found that theme are positive correlations between the oxygen consumption rate and the EMG-measurements on the region of law back. Even though these physical responses were influenced by work weights and work frequency, it was found that the work frequency plays more important role in making muscle fatigue than the work weight. From these finding it is suggested that the work frequency should be considered as a more influencing factor than the work weight as long as the weight belongs to the permissible range based on the viewpoint of the biomechanical criterion for designing a job of manual materials handling tasks.

  • The objective of this study was to make comparison of the psychophysical MAWLs for different manual materials handling tasks. Lifting activities with four different lifting frequencies (2, 5, 8, 11 lifts/min) for one lifting range from floor to 76cm height were studied. The oxygen consumption rate and heart rate were measured or recorded while subjects were lifting their MAWLs. Psychophysical MAWL decreased from 22.38 kg to 7.48 kg, while th oxygen consumption rate with the MAWL increased from 717.8 ml/min to 1114.7 ml/min as the frequency increased from 2 to 11 Lifts/min. Heart rate also increased from 104.5 to 120.7 bpm. It was found that the relationship between MAWL and frequency can be described best by the exponentaial function with the R-sq value 0.9865 for this study. The percent ratio of oxygen consumption rate with the MAWL and PWC ranged from 28% to 43%.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to identify the cause of suffocation accident. Methods: We analyzed the components of zinc concentrates by ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy) and tested the oxygen consumption by zinc concentrates in a 13.2-liter closed chamber. Results: Zinc, sulfur and iron were the main components of the four types of zinc concentrates, and accounted for 76~89% by weight. Zinc concentrates (0.5 or 0.927 kg) depleted the oxygen concentration from 20.9% to 7.4~18.9% during seven days. The rate of oxygen consumption was in the range of 3.0~11.0 mM/day·kg-sample at 21~24℃ and around 95% of free air space within the closed chamber. Conclusion: Since zinc concentrate consumes oxygen in a confined space, measures should be taken to prevent suffocation accident (such as ventilation and monitoring of oxygen concentration).

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to analysis effects of resistive exercise on cardiopulmonary fitness and cerebral artery blood flow velocity. Methods : Ten healthy university students had done resistive exercise without aerobic exercise over one year participated resistive exercise group and ten general university students, then were calculated oxygen consumption ($VO_2$) and respiratory exchange rate($VO_2/VCO_2$). After a week, they were measured Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography(TCD) at moderate exercise(HRmax 50%), maximal exercise (HRmax 100%) for taking cerebral blood flow velocity. Results : In the comparison between groups, resistive exercise group showed significant higher oxygen consumption and lower respiratory exchange than controls(p<0.05). In resistive exercise group, oxygen consumption was significant negative correlation with cerebral artery pulsatory index(p<0.05). but, oxygen consumption was significant positive correlation with systolic blood flow velocity in controls(p<0.05). Conclusions : After considering all the factors, important value in resistive exercise is regular participation and help us increasing contingency response ability.

  • Oxygen consumption rate of Far eastern catfish, Silurus asotus, weighing 280g, was measured using continuous flow respirometry chamber linked computer monitoring system. Mean oxygen consumption rates at $15^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$ were ranged in 35.2$\~96.4mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, 78.6$\~127.9mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, 120.1$\~231.7mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, and 197.5$\~352.3mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, respectively. The oxygen consumption rates increased with increasing water temperature (p<0.05). A photoperiod-mediated oxygen consumption rates was higher during the light period than during the darkness (P<0.05). When acclimated with different photoperiods, 24L:0D, 12L:12D, and 0L:24D, the lowest oxygen consumption rate was observed in the continuous darkness (0L:24D). The differences between maximum and minimum oxygen consumption rates oyer 24 hour increased with increasing water temperature and the difference was the highest in 12L:12D. Oxygen consumption rate changed suddenly at dawn and at dusk.

  • Proportion of Tegillarca granosa surviving after 2-6 hrs air exposure with 12 hrs interval at $20^{\circ}C$ and $28^{\circ}C$ for 20 days showed 85-100%, 80-100%, respectively. The survival rate was somewhat lower at high temperature but not significant (p < 0.05). Subsequent exposures for 7-9 days showed survival rate of 8.0-24.1% at $20^{\circ}C$ and $28^{\circ}C$. Oxygen consumption rates and filtration rates were significantly higher for 4 to 6 hrs exposures, compared with the preceding exposures. On the other hand, at $28^{\circ}C$, oxygen consumption rates in adult granular ark for 6 hrs exposure during 20 days had significantly decreased. Filtration rates in study groups increased a little over extended period of exposure, compared with those in control groups, and were similar irrelevant to the time of exposure and size of experimental animals. It is concluded, in view of their viability and oxygen consumption rate during air exposure, that ark shells have quite a high resistance to air exposure with their limited range of responses.

  • Tests for the toxicity of tributyltin (TBT) were conducted on mysid collected from Dadepo beach, Pusan, Korea. The toxic effects of tributyltin on the survival, growth and oxygen consumption of the mysid, Neomysis awatschensis have been evaluated. Mysids were exposed to several concentrations of TBT (0, 0.56, 1.15, 3.07 and 6.12 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) for 6 weeks. Survival rate was decreased with increases in concentration and exposure time and the reduction of more than 40% occurred at TBT concentration greater than 1.15 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L after 6 weeks. Growth rate was significantly decreased at concentrations greater than 1.15 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. Oxygen consumption rate was also decreased in a concentration-dependent way and significantly decreased to 39,47 and 69% of the control at 1.15, 3.07 and 6.12 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L, respectively. These results indicate that the contamination of aquatic environment by TBT has the potential to significantly reduce coastal and estuaries recruitment of mysids.
