  • Seasonal of gen consumption of surfclam, Mactra veneriformis in Kunsan coastal area had been measured under seasonal ambient temperature condition from January to December 1994. Samples were collected monthly and divided into two groups by shell length of 2 cm (1 year class) and 3 cm (2 year class). The effects of temperature $(15,\;20\;and\;25^{\circ}C)$ and salinity $(10,\;20\;and\;30\%_{\circ})$ showed that oxygen consumption decreased with the lower temperature and salinity. Seasonal changes of oxygen consumption in surfclam varied with ambient temperature; it was showed below $0.5mg{\cdot}g^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ winter season and $1.93\~2.44\;mg{\cdot}g^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ in summer season. The difference of oxygen consumption in two groups was appeared markdly in summer season. The relationship between oxygen consumption and the seasonal ambient temperature were obtained exponential equation as $Y=e^{-1.6312+0.0879X}$ for 2 cm group and $Y=e^{-2.2366+0.0994X}$ for 3 cm group. The slop of regression line between two groups was not significant, and so there was no difference in patterns of the oxygen consumption between two groups.

  • [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) between different types of exercises in women with normal weight obesity (NWO). [Methods] Nine university students with NWO having body mass index <25 kg/m2 and body fat percentage >30% participated in the study. First, continuous exercise (CEx) on an ergometer for 30 minutes at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and interval exercise (IEx) at 80% VO2max for 2 minutes were performed. This was followed by exercise performed at 40% VO2max for 1 minute and at 80% VO2max for 3 minutes, performed 6 times repeatedly for a total of 26 minutes. The accumulation of short duration exercise (AEx) was performed for 3-bouts of 10 minutes each at 60% VO2max. [Results] The major findings were as follows: energy consumption during the exercises showed no significant difference between CEx, IEx, and AEx; EPOC was higher in IEx and AEx as compared to CEx for all dependent variables (e.g. total oxygen consumption, total calorie, summation of heart rate, and EPOC duration); and the lipid profile showed no significant difference. [Conclusions] Our study confirmed that when homogenizing the energy expenditure for various exercises in NWO individuals, EPOC was higher in IEx and AEx than in CEx. Therefore, IEx and AEx can be considered as effective exercise methods for increasing energy expenditure in NWO females.

  • [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to confirm that the difference in excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) during exercise of the spending the same calories between the continuous and interval exercise. [Methods] Thirty-four healthy college students who did not regularly exercise volunteered to participate in our study. Continuous exercise was performed on an ergometer for 30 min at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max). Interval exercise was performed on a cycle ergometer at 80% VO2 max for 2 min initially, followed by 40% VO2 max for 1 min, and 80% VO2 max for 3 min. This was repeated six times for a total of 26 min. [Results] The major findings were as follows: (1) energy consumption during exercise was not significantly different between continuous exercise and interval exercise groups; (2) EPOC was higher in interval exercise than in continuous exercise for all dependent variables (i.e., total oxygen consumption, total calories, summation of heart rate); and (3) there were no significant differences in the lipid profile between continuous and interval groups. [Conclusions] Our study confirmed that after equalizing energy expenditure for continuous and interval exercise on a cycle ergometer in subjects in their twenties, interval exercise results in higher EPOC than continuous exercise. These data suggest that interval exercise may be more effective than continuous exercise in reducing body fat, for a given amount of energy expenditure.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of progesterone on the oxygen consumption of washed goat spermatozoa. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Progesterone significantly depressed the respilation of the spermatozoa. 2. Caffeine and Di-cAMP greatly increased the oxygen consumption of the spermatozoa. 3. Caffeine plus progesterone and Di-cAMP plus progesterone significantly depressed the oxygen uptake of the cells. 4. There is some indication of a relationship between progesterone and its interference with metabolic behavior of sperm.

  • The optimum salinity and the effects of rapid salinity change on oxygen consumption and ammonia nitrogen excretion were examined in River Puffer Takifugu obscrus (total length 9.5$\pm$0.9 cm, total weight 18.7$\pm$5.4 g). Fish examined at the different transfer medium salinity (2, 12, 22 and 32 psu) after 2 months of acclimation period at each salinities. The routine metabolic rates of River puffer are shown as parabola equation, $Y=-0.0873X^2+0.6384X-0.690$ for oxygen consumption and $Y=-2.1667X^2+7.1672X+31.999$ for ammonia nitrogen excretion with the salinity medium at 2, 12. 22 and 32 psu. The oxygen consumption and ammonia nitrogen excretion of River puffer trans-ferred to the low salinity medium (2 and 12 psu) showed significantly difference in each salinities rearing groups than to salinity of 22 and 32 psu. Fish has a diurnal rhythm in relate to feeding, it was showed that the peak of oxygen consumption appeared at 3 hours after feeding and the ammonia nitrogen excretion rate reached maximum 4 hours after feeding. These results may indicate that the optimum salinity for rearing of River puffer is 22 psu based on growth and feed conversion ratio. The rapid change of medium salinity had no effects on the oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion in River puffer based on this experiment.

  • This study was undertaken to determine whether Juglandis Semen (JAS) extraction exerts protective effect against oxidant-induced inhibition of $Na^+$-pump activity in cerebral cortex. $Na^+$-pump activity was estimated by measuring ouabain-sensitive oxygen consumption. The oxygen consumption significantly inhibited by 1 mM t-butylhydroperoxide (tBHP), which was prevented by addition of 2% JAS extraction. The oxygen consumption was increased by an increase in $Na^+$ concentration from 5 to 100mM, $K^+$ concentration from 0.5 to 10 mM, and $Mg^{++}$ concentration from 0.2 to 5 mM. These changes in ion concentrations did not affect the inhibitory effct of tBHP and protective action of JAS on oxygen consumption. tBHP(1mM) produced a significant increase in lipid peroxidation in cerebral cortex, which was prevented by 2% JAS extraction. These result suggest that JAS exerts protective effect against tBHP-induced inhibition of $Na^+$-pump activity in the cerebral cortex, this effect may be due to by an antioxidant action.

  • The diapause of $Telegryllus$ $emma$, the Emma field cricket, was investigated to study the ecological characteristics of the species. Changes in the volume, oxygen consumption, and water content of T. emma eggs were followed from oviposition. An increase in volume, oxygen consumption and water uptake occurred from 7 to 8 days following oviposition. The oxygen consumption of the eggs increased slowly for 7 days following oviposition, but then decreased until 15 days following oviposition. These results showed that a physiological change at diapause initiation affected the volume, water content, and oxygen consumption of the $T.$ $emma$ eggs. An experimental investigation of egg hatching showed that the eggs could be stocked at $10^{\circ}C$ for 40 days with a 14 day pre-period after laying and yield, 62.1% hatchability under these conditions. Maintaining the temperature at approximately $10^{\circ}C$ was favorable for hatching. Another experiment on egg hatching showed that the storage of eggs at $10^{\circ}C$ from 40 to 180 days would ensure satisfactory, hatching capacity.

  • Proportion of Tegillarca granosa surviving after 2-6 hrs air exposure with 12 hrs interval at $20^{\circ}C$ and $28^{\circ}C$ for 20 days showed 85-100%, 80-100%, respectively. The survival rate was somewhat lower at high temperature but not significant (p < 0.05). Subsequent exposures for 7-9 days showed survival rate of 8.0-24.1% at $20^{\circ}C$ and $28^{\circ}C$. Oxygen consumption rates and filtration rates were significantly higher for 4 to 6 hrs exposures, compared with the preceding exposures. On the other hand, at $28^{\circ}C$, oxygen consumption rates in adult granular ark for 6 hrs exposure during 20 days had significantly decreased. Filtration rates in study groups increased a little over extended period of exposure, compared with those in control groups, and were similar irrelevant to the time of exposure and size of experimental animals. It is concluded, in view of their viability and oxygen consumption rate during air exposure, that ark shells have quite a high resistance to air exposure with their limited range of responses.

  • In the cathode channel of a PEM fuel cell, the local concentration of oxygen near the gas diffusion layer (GDL) decreases in streamwise direction due to chemical reactions, which degrades the efficiency of the oxygen consumption and overall fuel cell efficiency. We numerically studied the influence of the swirling flow generated by a slanted groove mixer (SGM) on the concentration distribution of oxygen. We found that the swirling flow can increase the concentration of oxygen near the GDL, and subsequently improves the oxygen consumption rate.

  • The decomposition of tetrafluoromethane has been investigated with the reaction mechanism proposed for freely propagating $CH_4/CF_4/O_2/N_2$ premixed flames on the oxygen enrichment. The factors affecting on the removal efficiency of tetrafluoromethane were analyzed. The increase in flame temperature due to oxygen enrichment has a great influence on the removal efficiency of tetrafluoromethane. At the same oxygen enrichment condition, the removal efficiency in the rich flame is higher than one in the lean flame. The increase of the F/H ratio leads to decrease the flame temperature and the removal efficiency of tetrafluoromethan is decreased at the flame temperature of 2600 K or lower, The elementary reactions that dominate the consumption of tetrafluoromethane are (R1) $CF_4+M=CF_3+F+M$ and (R2) $CF_4+H=CF_3+HF$. (R1) has the greatest effect on the consumption of tetrafluoromethane under the oxygen enhanced flames.
