LFG (Land-Fill Gas) includes components of $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, and water. The preparation of synthesis gas from LFG as a DME (Dimethyl Ether) feedstock was studied by methane reforming of $CO_2$, $O_2$ and steam over NiO-MgO-$CeO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Our experiments were performed to investigate the effects of methane conversion and syngas ratio on the amount of LFG components over NiO-MgO-$CeO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Results were obtained through the activity reaction experiments at the temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ and GHSV of 4,000. The results were as following; it has generally shown that methane conversion rate increased with the increase of oxygen and carbon dioxide amounts. Highly methane conversion of 92~93% and syngas ratio of approximately 1.0 were obtained in the feed of gas composition flow-rate of 243ml/min of $CH_4$, 241ml/min of $CO_2$, 195ml/min of $O_2$, 48ml/min of $N_2$, and 360ml/min of water, respectively, under reactor pressure of 15 bar for 50 hrs of reaction time. Also, it was shown that catalyst deactivation by coke formation was reduced by excessively adding oxygen and steam as an oxidizer of the methane reforming.

This research makes a new attempt to apply the activated seawater by electrolysis in the development of two-stage wet scrubber system to control the exhaust gas of large marine diesel engines. First, with using only seawater that is naturally alkaline (pH typically around 8.1). the $SO_2\;and\;SO_3$ are absorbed by relatively high solubility compared to other components of exhaust pollutants, and PM (Particulate Matter) is removed through direct contact with sprayed seawater droplets. Besides, the electrolyzed alkaline seawater by electrolysis, which contains mainly NaOH together with alkali metal ions $(i.e.\;Na^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+})$, is used as the absorption medium of NOx and $CO_2$. Especially, to increase NOx absorption rate into the alkaline seawater. nitric oxide (NO) is adequately oxidized to nitrogen dioxide $(NO_2)$ in the acidic seawater, which means both volume fractions are adjusted to identical proportion. The results found that the strong acidic seawater was a valid oxidizer from NO to $NO_2$ and the strong alkaline seawater was effective in $CO_2$ absorption In the scrubber test, the SOx reduction of nearly $100\%$ could be achieved and also led to a sufficientPM reduction. Hence, the author believes that applying seawater and its electrolyte would bring the marine air pollution control system to an economical measure. Additionally it is well known that NOx and SOx concentration has a considerable influence on the $N_2O$ emission of green house gas. Although the $N_2O$ concentration exhausted from diesel engines is not as high, the green house gas effect is around 300 times greater than an equivalent volume of $CO_2$. Therefore, we investigated the $N_2O$ removal efficiency with using the electrolyzed seawater too. Finally this research would also plan to treat the effluent by applying electro-dialysis and electro-flotation technique s in the future.
To develop a chemical-looping combustion technology, conceptual design of 50 kW thermal chemical-looping combustor, which is composed of two interconnected pressurized circulating fluidized beds, was performed by means of mass and energy balance calculations. A riser type fast fluidized bed was selected as an oxidizer and a bubbling fluidized bed was selected as a reducer by mass balance for the chemical-looping combustor. Calculated values of bed mass, solid circulation flux, and reactor dimension by mass and energy balance calculations were suitable for construction and operation of chemical-looping combustor. It is concluded from the comparison of the design results and operating values of commercial circulating fluidized bed that the process outline is realistic. Moreover, the previous results support that oxygen carrier particle, NiO/bentonite, fulfills the conversion rates needed for the proposed design. The effects of system capacity, metal oxide content in a oxygen carrier particle, amount of steam input, gas velocity, and solid depth on design values were investigated and the changes in the system performance can be estimated by proposed design tool.

In relation to the dust detonatians which have imposed severe damages on the industry, the ignitability of various dusts has been investigated on a horizontal shock tube in this study. By using a newly designed air injector, very well-distributed clouds could be obtained. The proper reflected shock conditions have been generated by placing a reflector 1.5cm behind the air injector, which reflected the incident shock wave. The incident shock waves in the range of Mach number 2.8-3.3 created the postreflected shock temperature of 1200-1600K. Experimentally the ignition delay was defined as the time interval between the arrival of a reflected shock wave at dusts and the detection of visible light. Measured ignition delays of dusts investigated were located lower than 1msec under the above conditions. These values are one-order higher than those in the incident shock wave condition. In this type of ignitiion process the following three processes are considered to play important roles; heating of a particle, generation of volatile gas by endothermic devolatilization process, and its diffusion from the particle surface and the formation of stoichiometric mixture with oxidizer.
Numerical investigation was performed to study on the soot formation characteristics in the WSR according to the CO addition. Ethylene and pure air were used as a fuel and an oxidizer, respectively, and three different equivalence ratios (2.0, 2.5, 3.0) were used in the calculation. The resulted CO mole fraction of 10 % CO addition showed the maximum value in spite of the least CO supply. This means that the conversion of CO to soot and other carbon compounds is weakened under incipient soot formation. The soot volume fraction was decreased with increasing the CO addition because the important species for soot formation such as pyrene and acetylene, were decreased with the addition of CO. When the equivalence ratio was 2.5, the soot volume fraction shows the highest value, which results from the contribution of fuel rich condition and reacting temperature. Furthermore, surface growth rate and species concentrations justified the HACA mechanism for soot formation.
The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to simulate an engine nacelle fire and to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames. Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) based on the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) was employed to clarify the characteristics of reacting flow around bluff body. The overall reaction was considered and the constant for reaction was determined from flame extinction limits of experimental results. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability and flame mode were affected mainly by vortex structure near bluff body. In the coflow configuration, air velocity at the flame extinction limit are increased with fuel velocity, which is comparable to the experiment results. Comparing with the isothermal flow field, the reacting flow produces a weak and small recirculation zone, which is result in the reductions of density and momentum due to temperature increase by reaction in the wake zone.
Immobilization of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria has been studied to enhance the biomass retention of the slowly growing bacteria and the process stability. The purpose of this study was to compare the nitrogen removal efficiency of granular and immobilized anammox bacteria with poly vinyl alcohol and alginate. The specific anammox activity of the granular, homoginized and immobilized anammox bacteria were $0.016{\pm}0.0002gN/gVSS/d$, $0.011{\pm}0.001gN/gVSS/d$ and $0.007{\pm}0.0005gN/gVSS/d$, respectively. Although the activity decreased to 43.7 % of the original one due to low pH and $O_2$ exposure during the homogination and the immobilization, it was rapidly recovered within 7 days in the following continuous culture. When synthetic T-N concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 800 mg/L were fed, the immobilized anammox bacteria showed higher nitrogen removal efficiencies at all operational conditions than those of granular anammox bacteria. When the sludge retention time was shorten below 30.7 days and the reject water was fed, the nitrite removal efficiency of the granular anammox bacteria dropped to 8 % of the initial value, while that of the immobilized anammox bacteria was maintained over 95 % of the initial one. The immobilization with poly vinyl alcohol and alginate would be a feasible method to improve the performance and stability of the anammox process.
We isolated and identified a microorganism which was excellent for ammonia oxidation in the biological control of ammonia gas in odor producing materials from organic composting. The isolated strain was tested for growth characteristics and ammonia elimination efficiency under various conditions of temperature, pH, carbon concentration and ammonia concentration. The strain was isolated from a culture broth used in a $NO_2$ producing test with Griess-Ilosvay reagent. The results of 16S rRNA sequence from the isolated strain by using BLANST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) and confirming RDP (Ribosomal Database Project II) and ERRD (The European Ribosomal RNA Database) indicate that the strain is related to Delftia sp. UV-Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, UVmini-1240) was used as a microbial growth test by measuring turbidity on OD660nm and ammonia concentration was measured by Spectrophotometer (HACH, DR-4000). The optimum growth culture conditions of the ammonia oxidizer Delftia sp. were $30^{\circ}C$, pH 7, glucose concentration 1.00% and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ 0.5 g/l. Ammonia elimination efficiency was over 94% under the same conditions.

Pulse Detonation Engine(PDE) has been investigated as a next generation propulsion system with the advantages of the higher thermal efficiency by the compression effect and the wide operation ranges from zero speed at ground. In the present study, an efficient theoretical PDE performance prediction program was developed for realistic propellants based on the Endo's theory combining the Chapman-Jouguet detonation theory and expansion process of burnt gas in a constant area tube. The program was validated through the comparison with the experimental data obtained by a ballistic pendulum measurement. PDE performance analyses were carried out for various hydrocarbon fuels and oxidizer compositions by changing the mixture equivalence ratio and initial conditions. Theoretical PDE performance database could be established as a result of the analyses.

The effect of oxidizer injection angle on the combustion characteristics of end-burning hybrid combustor is numerically investigated. Besides the previously studied parameter(injector arrangement, port diameter and O/F ratio), three different injection angle are considered: parallel angle to fuel surface(Case 1), +30 degree inclined angle toward the fuel(Case 2) and 30 degree inclined angle toward the nozzle(Case 3). It is found that Case 2 has the best mixing pattern in the upstream area but has the worst combustion efficiency since non negligible amount of unburned fuel is expelled from the nozzle. In contrast, though Case 1 and Case 3 showed relatively low mixing effect than the Case 2, they had high combustion efficiency. The comparison of numerical results between Case 1 and Case 3 demonstrate that no major difference is encountered, however, Case 1 is expected to have the best combustion efficiency due to the low residence time of the Case 3 injector which heads toward the nozzle.
