Turbulent drag reduction (DR) efficiency of water soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with two different molecular weights was studied as a function of polymer concentration and temperature in a turbulent flow produced via a rotating disk system. Its mechanical degradation behavior as a function of time in a turbulent flow was also analyzed using both a simple exponential decay function and a fractional exponential decay equation. The fractional exponential decay equation was found to fit the experimental data better than the simple exponential decay function. Its thermal degradation further exhibited that the susceptibility of PEO to degradation increases dramatically with increasing temperature.
The variation of sheet resistance and the reduction of masking oxide thickness with the flow rate of nitrogen gas has been measured in Boron predeposition process with Planar Diffusion source, BN-975. At 900.deg. C, the sheet resistance varied as much as 75% when the nitrogen flow rate was changed from 0.4 liters/min to 2.0 liters/min. At 975.deg. C, however, only 12% of sheet resistance variation was observed under the same flow rate change. The reduction of masking oxide thickness at 975.deg. C for a 5 min predeposition was 600 nm when the nitrogen flow rate was 0.4 liters/min. When the flow rate incresased to 1.9 liters/min, however, only 100nm of masking oxide was consumed in a similar predeposition process.
Various vanadium-oxide thin films were deposited by e-beam and thermal evaporation of V2O5, V2O3, and VO2 powders. Films with thickness of $2000\AA$ were subjected to annealing at $300^{\circ}C$~$450^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere for the crystallization and desification purposes. For the films deposited from V2O5 and VO2 sources, sources, Magneli (VnO2n-1$ 4\leq$$n\leq$ 8) and VO2 phase appeared at $300^{\circ}C$, respectively, but VO2 phase also transformed into Magneli phase at $450^{\circ}C$ by severe reduction. On the contrary, VO2/VO mixed phases resulted from congruent evaporation of V2O3 unchanged after the same annealing treatment due to the balanced reduction and oxidation of VO2 and VO whcih have different equilibrium O2 pressures. It is suggested that the annealing in the controlled oxidation atmosphere or the deposition using mixed oxide sources are necessary to get the film containing VO2 phase.
A study of the recovery of tin and nickel from steel ball scraps for barrel plating was carried out through a physical treatment, a leaching treatment, hydrogen reduction and an electrolysis experiment. The recovery of the iron component was over 95% by the physical treatment. We obtained tin oxide in the form of metastannic acid ($SnO_2{\cdot}xH_2O$) with impurities of less than 5% from the leaching treatment. We also recovered the high-purity metallurgical tin at a rate that exceeded 99.9% by the electrolysis of crude tin obtained from the hydrogen reduction of metastannic acid.

Ultrasonic-milling of metal oxide nanopowders for the preparation of tungsten heavy alloys was investigated. Milling time was selected as a process variable. XRD results of metal oxide nanopowders ultrasonic-milled for 50 and 100h showed that mean crystallite size reduced with increasing milling time and there was no evidence of contamination or change of composition by impurities. It was found that nanocomposite powders reduced at $800^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ atmosphere had a composition of 93.1W-4.9Ni-2.0Fe by EDX analysis. Hardness of sintered samples of 50 and 100h was 390 and 463 Hv, respectively, which corresponds to the hardness of commercial products.
This is the study on diffusion of ceramic body oxide compounds to glaze. For ceramic bodies, no ferrous oxides contain white ware, celadon, and 3 wt% iron oxides contained white ware was used in this experiment. These ceramic bodies were glazed by transparency glaze, iron oxides contained glaze, and glaze made by pine tree ash that treated in 1240 degree, under reduction condition for an hour. An electron probe microanalyzer(EPMA) was used to study diffusion of oxides and to calculate distance of ceramics bodies. As a result, only iron oxide and magnesium oxide from the body diffused to glaze, and also made a band which shown very thin layer of iron oxide and magnesium oxide between the body and glaze. The densest band of iron oxide formed 100 to $150{\mu}m$ in the glaze, and the densest band of magnesium oxide was found 50 to $100{\mu}m$ in the glaze. Therefore, it could be concluded that iron oxide in the body is diffused to the glaze and it affects the color of glaze, even though iron oxide exists in the glaze. Furthermore, the thickness of the glaze has an effect on the color of celadon.
Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were orally administered with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), which inhibits or blocks the production of nitric oxide from L-arginine in vascular endothelial cells and vessel tissue. We examined the effects of nitric oxide on some physiological changes such as blood pressure and heart rate, and confirms the apoptosis induced by the suppressed nitric oxide activity in the kidney. This study was performed to investigate correlation between the activities of nitric oxide and apoptosis by immunohistochemical changes of apoptotic control proteins with regulated chronic inhibition of nitric oxide. In the kidney from L-NAME-treated group, immunohistochemical reaction to the antigens of apoptosis inhibiting proteins such as bcl-2 and bcl-xL, exhibited a time-dependent reduction. The expression of apoptosis-inhibiting proteins such as bax and p53 increased expression in proportion to the duration of treatment. The most sensitive apoptosis regulating proteins to L-NAME were p53 in stimulation and bcl-2 in inhibition, respectively.
We have developed the yttrium oxide (YNP) or ytterbium oxide (YbNP) nanoparticle/polymer matrices for the size-dependent separation of DNA ranging from 100 bp to 9,000 bp. High separation efficiency (> $10^6$ plates/m) and the baseline resolution for various DNA standards (100 bp, 500 bp, and 1 kbp DNA ladder) were obtained in 10 min with these matrices. The effects of concentrations of both polyethylene oxide (PEO) and nanoparticles were investigated and the highest performance was obtained at 0.02% PEO with 0.02% YNP or YbNP. Similar sieving power for both YNP and YbNP matrices was observed probably due to the similar sizes of nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of comparable sieving networks for DNA separation. For the reduction of electrosmotic flow, either dynamic or permanent coating of the capillary inner wall was compared and it turned out that PEO was superior to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or polyacrylamide (PAA) for better separation efficiency.
Ultra-fine TiC/Co composite powder was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction process without wet chemical processing. The starting powder was prepared by milling of titanium dioxide and cobalt oxalate powders followed by subsequent calcination to have a target composition of TiC-15 wt.%Co. The prepared oxide powder was mixed again with carbon black, and this mixture was then heat-treated under flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase, mass and particle size of the mixture during heat treatment were investigated using XRD, TG-DTA and SEM. The synthesized oxide powder after heat treatment at 700$^{\circ}C$ has a mixed phase of TiO$_2$ and CoTiO$_3$ phases. This composite oxide powder was carbothermally reduced to TiC/Co composite powder by the solid carbon. The synthesized TiC/Co composite powder at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 9 hours has particle size of under about 0.4 $\mu$m.
[ ${\beta}-W(W_3O)$ ] oxide layer on the surface of each W(tungsten) nanopowder produced by the electric explosion of wire(EEW) process were formed during the 1vol.% air passivation process. The oxide layer hindered sintering densification of compacts during SPS process. The oxide phase was reduced to the pure W phase during SPS. The W nanopowder's compacts treated by the hydrogen reduction showed high sintered density of 94.5%. after SPS process at $1900^{\circ}C$.
