  • The anodic oxidation behaviour of a cast component of AC2A Al alloy with machined surface and ascast surface was investigated in sulfuric acid solution. The anodized specimen showed relatively uniform and thick anodic oxide films on the as-cast surface, while non-uniform and very thin oxide films were formed on the machined surface. Non-anodized as-cast surface was observed to be covered with thick oxide scales and showed a number of second-phase particles containing Si, while non-anodized machined surface showed no oxide scales and relatively very small number of Si particles. Thus, the very limited growth of anodic oxide films on the as-cast surface was attributed to the presence of thick oxide scales and Si-containing second-phase particles on its surface.

  • Transition metal oxide nanocrystalline materials are playing major role in energy storage application in this scenario. Nickel oxide is one of the best antiferromagnetic materials which is used as electrodes in energy storage devices such as, fuel cells, batteries, electrochemical capacitors, etc. In this research work, nickel oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by combustion route in presence of organic fuels such as, glycine, glucose and and urea. The prepared nickel oxide nanoparticles were calcined at 600℃ for 3 h to get phase pure materials. The calcined nanoparticles were preliminarily characterized by XRD, particle size analysis, SEM and EDAX. To prepare nickel oxide electrode materials for application in supercapacitors, the calcined NiO nanoparticles were mixed with di-methyl-acetamide and few drops of nafion solution for 12 to 16 h. The above slurry was coated in the graphite sheet and dried at 50℃ for 2 to 4 h in a hot air oven to remove organic solvent. The dried sample was subjected to electrochemical studies, such as cyclic voltammetry, AC impedance analysis and chrono-coulometry studies in KOH electrolyte medium. From the above studies, it was found that nickel oxide nanoparticles prepared by combustion synthesis using glucose as a fuel exhibited resulted in low particle diameter (42.23 nm). All the nickel oxide electrodes have shown better good capacitance values suitable for electrochemical capacitor applications.

  • Chromium oxide/zirconia catalysts were prepared by dry impregnation of powdered $Zr(OH)_4$ with ($NH_4$)$_2$CrO$_4$aqueous solution. The characterization of prepared catalysts was performed using FTIR, XPS, XRD and DTA methods, and by the measurement of surface area. The addition of chromium oxide to zirconia shifted the transitions of $ZrO_2$ from amorphous to tetragonal phase and from tetragonal to monoclinic phase to higher temperature due to the strong interaction between chromium oxide and zirconia, and the specific surface area of catalysts increased in proportion to the chromium oxide content. Since the $ZrO_2$ stabilizes supported chromium oxide, chromium oxide was well dispersed on the surface of zirconia, and ${\alpha}$-$Cr_2O_3$ was observed only at the calcination temperature above 1173 K. Upon the addition of only small amount of chromium oxide (1 wt% Cr) to $ZrO_2$, both the acidity and acid strength of catalyst increased remarkably, showing the presence of two kinds of acid sites on the surface of $CrO_x$/$ZrO_4$-Bronsted and Lewis.

  • Film characteristics of thin ONO dielectric layers for MONOS (metal-oxide-nitride-oxide-semiconductor) EEPROM was investigated by AES, SIMS, TEM and AFM. The ONO films with different dimension of tunneling oxide, nitride, and blocking oxide were fabricated. During deposition of the LPCVD nitride films on tunneling oxide, this thin oxide was nitrized. When the blocking oxide were deposited on the nitride film, the oxygen not only oxidized the nitride surface, but diffused through the nitride. The results of ONO film analysis exhibits that it is made up of $SiO_2$(blocking oxide)/O-rich SiOxNy (interface)/ N-rich SiOxNy(nitride)/O-rich SiOxNy(tunneling oxide). In addition, the SiON phase is distributed mainly near the tunneling oxide/nitride and nitride/blocking oxide interfaces, and the $Si_2NO$ phase is distributed mainly at nitride side of each interfaces and in tunneling oxide.

  • Oxide coatings are formed on die-cast AZ91D Mg alloy through an environmentally friendly plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO) process using an electrolytic solution of $NaAlO_2$, KOH, and KF. The effects of PEO condition with different duty cycles (10 %, 20 %, and 40 %) and frequencies(500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz) on the crystal phase, composition, microstructure, and micro-hardness properties of the oxide coatings are investigated. The oxide coatings on die-cast AZ91D Mg alloy mainly consist of MgO and $MgAl_2O_4$ phases. The proportion of each crystalline phase depends on various electrical parameters, such as duty cycle and frequency. The surfaces of oxide coatings exhibit as craters of pancake-shaped oxide melting and solidification particles. The pore size and surface roughness of the oxide coating increase considerably with increase in the number of duty cycles, while the densification and thickness of oxide coatings increase progressively. Differences in the growth mechanism may be attributed to differences in oxide growth during PEO treatment that occur because the applied operating voltage is insufficient to reach breakdown voltage at higher frequencies. PEO treatment also results in the oxide coating having strong adhesion properties on the Mg alloy. The micro-hardness at the cross-section of oxide coatings is much higher not only compared to that on the surface but also compared to that of the conventional anodizing oxide coatings. The oxide coatings are found to improve the micro-hardness with the increase in the number of duty cycles, which suggests that various electrical parameters, such as duty cycle and frequency, are among the key factors controlling the structural and physical properties of the oxide coating.

  • Transient liquid phase processing was investigated to decrease processing temperatures while maintaining useful piezoelectric properties in the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) system. Niobium oxide$(Nb_2O_5)$ modified crystalline PZT (PZTN) powder was combined with lead silicate $(PS; PbO-SiO_2)$ glass powder and crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia. Firing above the melting temperature of the lead silicate $(PS; Tm \risingdotseq\; 714^{\circk}C)$ resulted in liquid phase densification of the PZTN followed by dissolution of the titania, zirconia, and niobia into the liquid phase, and crystallization of additional PZTN. The addition of crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia to react with the lead oxide from the lead silicate phase resulted in an increase in the dielectric and Piezoelectric properties.

  • The microstructures of the oxide scale developed at high temperature on steels are very complex and their development depends on many factors including time, temperature, oxidation conditions and alloying elements. The classical model of an oxide scale on steel consisting of wüstite, magnetite and haematite layers, is more complicated in reality and its properties change with the factors that affect their development. An understanding of the oxide scale formation and its properties can only be achieved by careful examination of the scale microstructure. The oxide scale microstructure may be difficult to characterise by conventional techniques such as optical or standard scanning electron microscopy. An unambiguous characterisation of the scale and the correct identification of the phases within the scale are difficult unless the crystallographic structure for each phase in the scale is considered and a simultaneous microstructure-microtexture analysis is carried out. In the current study Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) has been used to investigate the microstructure of iron oxide layers grown on low carbon steels at different times and temperatures. EBSD has proved to be a powerful technique for identifying the individual phases in the oxide scale accurately. The results show that different grain shapes and sizes develop for each phase in the scale depending on time and temperature.

  • For the first time, charge trapping nonvolatile semiconductor memories with the deoxidized oxynitride gate dielectric is proposed and demonstrated. Gate dielectric wit thickness of less than 1 nm have been grown by postnitridation of pregrown thermal silicon oxides in NO ambient and then reoxidation. The nitrogen distribution and chemical state due to NO anneal/reoxidation were investigated by M-SIMS, TOF-SIMS, AES depth profiles. When the NO anneal oxynitride film was reoxidized on the nitride film, the nitrogen at initial oxide interface not only moved toward initial oxide interface, but also diffused through the newly formed tunnel oxide by exchange for oxygen. The results of reoxidized oxynitride(ONO) film analysis exhibits that it is made up of SiO$_2$(blocking oxide)/N-rich SiON interface/Si-rich SiON(nitrogen diffused tunnel oxide)/Si substrate. In addition, the SiON and the S1$_2$NO Phase is distributed mainly near the tunnel oxide, and SiN phase is distributed mainly at tunnel oxide/Si substrate interface.

  • Hydration treatments were performed on the pure aluminum substrate at $100^{\circ}C$ followed by anodizing and heat treatments on the layers. The transformation behaviors of the oxide layers according to the hydration treatment were studied using TEM, XRD, RBS etc. Above $90^{\circ}C$ the hydrous oxide film could be formed, which were turned out to be hydrous oxides(AlOOH $nH_2$O). The anodization on the hydrous oxide film was more effective for the transition of amorphous anodic oxides to the crystalline $\Upsilon-Al_2$ $O_3$ comparing with the case for anodizing on the aluminum substrate without hydration treatment And additional heat treatments were also helpful for the acceleration of the transformation of the hydrous oxide to $\Upsilon-Al_2$ $O_3$. During the heat treatment the interface between $\Upsilon-Al_2$ $O_3$and the hydrous oxide layers migrated to the outer side of hydrous layer.

  • The peculiarities of using Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) and solid state phase synthesis for production of high temperature superconductor materials are discussed. Oxide superconductors with general formula $ReBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7-x}$ (Re= Y, Yb, Sm, Nd) have been made with using barium oxide initial powder instead of traditional barium carbonate. X-ray powder diffraction showed a single phase orthorhombic perovskite structure was produced in all reactions. Phenomena observed during the grinding of the reactant mixture are presented. Mechano-chemical activation - as a pretreatment of the reactant mixture - strongly influences the kinetic parameters, the reaction mechanism, and the composition and structure of the final product.
