We have studied the liquid crystal (LC) orientation behavior on the organic hybrid overcoat layer with ion beam irradiation. Excellent LC alignments of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the ion beam irradiated organic hybrid overcoat layers were observed in various intensities above 600 eV. Pretilt angles of the NLC on the organic hybrid overcoat layers for all ion beam energy intensities were observed from 0.2 to 0.5 degrees. Also, we used the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images for measuring the roughness of the organic hybrid overcoat layers with ion beam irradiation before and after. The surface of organic hybrid overcoat layers was leveled off by the ion beam irradiation. Finally, a good LC alignment thermal stability on the organic hybrid overcoat layer with ion beam irradiation can be achieved.
In Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) manufacturing, the organic over coat materials over coat materials for insulation layer of color filter with acryl ate was widely used. Therefore, we approach that the organic overcoat material can use to insulation layer for color filter and liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer in this research. The LC aligning capabilities was successful stuided for the first time. The organic overcoat layer and polymer layer was coated by spin-coating. In order to characterize the LC alignment, electric optic and residual DC and atomic force microscopy (AFM) image was used. The good LCD aligning capabilities treated on the organic overcoat thin film surfaces with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ above ion beam energy density of 1200 eV can be achieved. Also the good LCD alignment capabilities treated polymer on surfaces with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ above ion beam energy density of 1800 eV can be achieved. Comparing electro-optical characteristics between the Polyimide (PI) and the overcoat, the resultant transmittance of the overcoat considerably matched that of the PI and the residual DC also exhibited similar features with the PI.
Over the past years, a large number of acrylate polymers have been developed and the overcoat thin layer containing acrylate polymers have been used for TFT-LCD color filter. As forming thin layer using acrylate polymers, the existing acrylate polymers have some problems such as low hardness by low Tg temperature, coating uniformity and solubility in organic solvent. To solve these problems, we synthesized new polymer(Scheme.), containing olefin monomer, which has high Tg temperature, good coating uniformity and good solubility in organic solvent. The overcoat thin layer containing new polymer resulted in good coating uniformity, stain, spot, scratch, heat resistance, DOP(Degree Of Planarization) on RGB glass, transparency, hardness, adhesion, anti-chemicals(anti-acid, anti-base, anti-organic solvent), insulation and anti-humidity. Scheme. The structure of new polymer X = Olefin monomer contains ketone, ester, hydroxy, ether, halogen, nitrile, alkoxy, phenyl functional group $R_1$ and $R_2$= H or $CH_3$. Corrosion of the disk has been an ongoing concern for the manufacturers of hard disk drives. With the advent of magnetoresistive (MR) head, very low levels of corrosion and contamination become more critical since the raised defects and corrosion products on the disk surface-anything that heats the MR sensor due to the contact-can distort the output signal of the head. This phenomenon is called as thermal asperity. In this paper, the effect of corrosion as a form of Co migration on the occurrence of thermal asperity in MR drives was investigated. The corrosion test at high temperature (60$^{\circ}C$) and high relative humidity (80%) was emphasized in this study and the testing results at ambient condition were compared. The corrosion on the disks was characterized as the amount of Co ion migration using an ion chromatography (IC) and a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS). It is proved that corrosion on the disk surface after storage testing is closely correlated to the amount of Co ions migration from the magnetic layer to disk surfaces and higher Co migration causes more thermal asperities in the drive. In order to reduce Co migration, several methods such as burnishing process and structure of the carbon overcoat were investigated. It is found that the hydrogenated carbon overcoat shows the least Co migration among different types of overcoat layer. However, the most effective way to reduce Co migration is the application of Cr layer between the overcoat and the magnetic alloy layer.
The liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities treated on the Organic overcoat thin film surfaces by ion beam irradiation and rubbing method was successfully studied for the first time. The Organic overcoat layer was coated by spin-coating. In order to characterize the LC alignment, the microscope, pretilt angle, thermal stress, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) image was used. The good LC aligning capabilities treated on the Organic overcoat thin film surfaces with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ above ion beam energy density of 1200 eV can be achieved. But, the alignment of defect of NLC on the Organicovercoat surface at low energy density of 600 eV was measured. The pretilt angle of NLC on the Organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 min at energy density of 1800eV was measured about 1.13 degree. But, low pretilt angles of NLC on the Organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure at energy density of 600, 1200, 2400, and 3000 eV was measured. Also, the pretilt angle of NLC on the rubbed Organic overcoat thin film surfaces was measured about 0.04 degrees. Finally, the good thermal stability of LC alignment on the Organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 min can be measured.
Transparent conducting glasses exhibit high ohmic losses that are apparent in the case of large size Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs). In this study, we investigated the impact of current collectors over the efficiency of DSSCs. The Silver current collectors were prepared on both counter electrode and working electrode surface by screen printing method. For long term stability in electrolyte environment and also to avoid the charge recombination, current collectors are protected by sodium silicate overcoat layer. These current collectors were characterized for their microstructure parameters. Also current collector's stability in electrolyte environment has been investigated.
Magnetic domains were observed using an image lock-in technique for backscattered electron contrast (Type II) with a 200 kV scanning electron microscope. Backscattered electrons indicate a difference in magnetic domain structures at the upper and lower parts of the upper pole in thin-film heads, changing the acceleration voltage. With this method, it is also possible to observe the domain structure of the thin-film head pole through a 10 to $20\;\mu\textrm{m}$ protective layer, and the upper shield of the MR head through the coil in the resist, alumina overcoat, and upper pole.
We used Brewster's Law to examine the mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on an organic insulation layer when subjected to ion-beam irradiation. Brewster's Law implies that the maximum rate polarized rayon a slanted insulation layers on the substrate and it illustrates the dependence of polarization and themechanical structure on the ion beam irradiation process. The pretilt angle of nematic LCs on the organic insulation surface was about $1.13^{\circ}$ for an ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 minute at 1800eV. This shows the dependence of LC alignment on the polarization ratio in a slanted organic insulation layer. We also discussed the electro-optical characteristic of twisted nematic (TN) LCD using ion beam irradiation on organic overcoat layer.
In magnetic hard disk drives, higher areal recording density requires reduction of head-disk spacing. To overcome the increase of stiction associated with reduction of head-disk spacing, a padder slider, which adds pads to slider's air bearing surface, can be one of the practical solution for sub 20 nm flying height, and even for near contact recording. This study investigated the tribological characteristics of a padder slider. A padder slider took off slowly but showed less friction force than a normal slider. The hot/dry CSS test and drag test indicated that pad wear of a padder slider was negligible. The tribological performance of disk is an important factor to be considered. In particular, less carbon overcoat layer of the disk will result in higher stiction and wear in slider/disk interface. In conclusion, a padder slider shows encouraging tribological performances for practical use in HDD.
