  • High internal phase emulsions are highly concentrated emulsion systems consisting of a large volume of dispersed phase above 0.74. The rheological properties of high internal phase water-in-oil emulsions were measured conducting steady shear, oscillatory shear and creep/recovery experiments. It was found that the yield stress is inversely proportional to the drop size with the exponent of values between 1 and 2. Since the oil phase contains monomeric species, microcellular foams can easily be prepared from high internal phase emulsions. In this study, the microcellular foams combining a couple of thickeners into the conventional formulation of styrene and water system were investigated to understand the effect of viscosity ratio on cell size. Cell size variation on thickener concentration could be explained by a dimensional analysis between the capillary number and the viscosity ratio. Compression properties of foam are important end use properties in many practical applications. Crush strength and Young's modulus of microcellular foams polymerized from high internal phase emulsions were measured and compared from compression tests. Of the foams tested in this study, the foam prepared from the organoclay having reactive group as an oil phase thickener showed outstanding compression properties.

  • Blends of collagen dispersion (COL) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in different weight ratios were investigated by oscillatory rheometry, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that even with 80% of PVA, the COL/PVA blends behaved more like collagen dispersion than pure PVA solution in the dynamic thermal and frequency processing, for instance, a dominant elastic appearance (G'>G"), a similar shear thinning behavior and the thermal denaturation below $40^{\circ}C$. However, influence on the blend behaviour by PVA was noticeable, for instance, an increase of dynamic denaturation temperature, the decreasing intensity of amide I, II and III bands as well as the diminishing irregular pores on the surface of blends. The interaction between collagen and PVA could be observed, especially at the regions with low content or high content of PVA.

  • The trends and seasonalities of most time series have a large variability. The result of the Singular Spectrum Analysis(SSA) processing is a decomposition of the time series into several components, which can often be identified as trends, seasonalities and other oscillatory series, or noise components. Generally, forecasting by the SSA method should be applied to time series governed (may be approximately) by linear recurrent formulae(LRF). This study examined forecasting ability of SSA-LRF model. These methods are applied to daily water demand data. These models indicate that most cases have good ability of forecasting to some extent by considering statistical and visual assessment, in particular forecasting validity shows good results during 15 days.

  • Many hydroclimatic time series are marked by interannual and longer quasi-period features that are associated with narrow band oscillatory climate modes. A time series modeling approach that directly considers such structures is developed and presented. The essence of the approach is to first develop a wavelet decomposition of the time series that retains only the statistically significant wavelet components, and to then model each such component and the residual time series as univariate autoregressive processes. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated through the simulation of observed and paleo reconstructions of climate indices related to ENSO and AMO, tree ring and rainfall time series. Long ensemble simulations that preserve the spectral attributes of the time series in each ensemble member can be generated. The usual low order statistics are preserved by the proposed model, and its long memory performance is superior to the direction application of an autoregressive model.

  • Global attractivity and oscillatory behavior of the following nonlinear impulsive parabolic differential equation which is a general form of many population models $$\array{\{{{\frac {{\partial}u(t,x)}{{\partial}t}=\Delta}u(t,x)-{\delta}u(t,x)+f(u(t-\tau,x)),\;t{\neq}t_k,\\u(t^+_k,x)-u(t_k,x)=g_k(u(t_k,x)),\;k{\in}I_\infty,}\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;(*)$$ are considered. Some new sufficient conditions for global attractivity and oscillation of the solutions of (*) with Neumann boundary condition are established. These results no only are true but also improve and complement existing results for (*) without diffusion or impulses. Moreover, when these results are applied to the Nicholson's blowflies model and the model of Hematopoiesis, some new results are obtained.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic jet is simulated at a Mach number 2.1 and a Reynolds numberof 70000 to identify the mechanism of Mach wave generation and radiation from the jet. In orderto provide the near-field radiated sound directly and resolve the large-scale vortices highly.high-resolution essentially non-oscillatory(ENO) scheme, which is one of the ComputationalAeroAcoustics(CAA) techniques, is newly employed. Perfectly expanded supersonic jet is selectedas a target to see pure shear layer growth and Mach wave radiation without effect of change injet cross section due to expansion or shock wave generated at nozzle exit. The sound field ishighly directional and dominated by Mach waves generated near the end of potential core. Thenear field sound pressure levels as well as the aerodynamic properties of the jet, such asmean-flow parameters are in fare agreement with experimental data.

  • In many practical applications, we face the problem of reconstruction of an unknown function sampled at some data points. Among infinitely many possible reconstructions, the thin plate spline interpolation is known to be the least oscillatory one in the Beppo-Levi semi norm, when the data points are sampled in $\mathbb{R}^2$. The traditional proofs supporting the argument are quite lengthy and complicated, keeping students and researchers off its understanding. In this article, we introduce a simple and short proof for the optimal reconstruction. Our proof is unique and reguires only elementary mathematical background.

  • Gelation mechanism of xanthan-carob mixture (X/C) was investigated based on thermorheological behavior. Three X/C ratios (1:3, 1:1, and 3:1) were studied. Small amplitude oscillatory shear tests were performed to measure linear viscoelastic behavior during gelation. Temperature sweep ($-1^{\circ}C/min$) experiments were conducted. Using a non-isothermal kinetic model, activation energy (Ea) during gelation was calculated. At 1% total concentration, the Ea for xanthan fraction (${\phi}_x$)=0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 were 178, 159, and 123 kJ/mol, respectively. However, a discontinuity was observed in the activation energy plots. Based on this, two gelation mechanisms were presumed-association of xanthan and carob molecules and aggregation of polymer strands. The association process is the primary mechanism to form 3-D networks in the initial stage of gelation and the aggregation of polymer strands played a major role in the later stage.

  • The textural and rheological properties of cheese are major attributes for the characterization of cheese types, ripening, and consumer preferences. The use of small amplitude oscillatory rheological testing has made it possible for cheese researchers to assess the major properties of cheese, such as melting behavior and storage modulus, without irreversible deformation. In addition, large deformation testing such as textural profile analysis can assess properties such as hardness of cheese. While the sensory properties of cheese are valued by consumers, objective and reliable measurements are paramount for researchers. Ongoing development and refinement of scientific measurement methods of cheese are vital.
