Paleomagnetic study on the sedimentary rocks in the Choongnam Coal Field has been carried out to determine the direction of declination and inclination of NRM and position of paleomagnetic pole, and to investigate the geotectonism and geomagnetic stratigraphy of the sedimentary rocks in the Daedong Group. As a result of paleomagnetic study, the study area can be divided tectonically into two blocks by Baegunsa fault, namely northwestern and southeastern blocks. Site mean declination and inclination of Baegunsa and Seoungjuri Formations in the northwestern block are $23.2^{\circ}$ and $54.9^{\circ}$, respectively. Those of Amisan, Jogyeri, Baegunsa and Seoungjuri Formations in the southeastern block show normal direction with declination and inclination of $-22.1^{\circ}$ and $11.2^{\circ}$, and reversed direction with those of $158.5^{\circ}$ and $-12.6^{\circ}$, respectively. Average paleomagnetic pole position in the northwestern block is located at $212.9^{\circ}E$ and $71.1^{\circ}N$, and that in the southeastern block at $345.7^{\circ}E$ and $53.3^{\circ}N$. This difference suggests relative rotation of about $45^{\circ}$ between two blocks. The paleolatitude of Daedong Group at the time of sedimentation is $5.6^{\circ}N$ much lower than present latitude of $37.7^{\circ}N$. Compared with worldwide Mesozoic paleomagnetic polarity stratigraphy, Amisan Formation is correlated with the lower boundary of Nuanetsi reversal zone in Graham interval, and Baegunsa and Seoungjuri Formations are correlated with just upper part of the upper boundary of Nuanetsi reversal zone, and their geologic ages are Late Triassic to Early Jurassic. The position of paleomagnetic pole acquired from Daedong Group in the study area is different from those in other places. This may be attributed to the different tectonic movement by Daebo Orogeny occurred after the deposition of Daedong Group.
The Danyang area consists of the thrust and folded sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic Era. The area is bounded by major tectonic units which are the Gagdong Thrust to the west and the Okdong Fault to the east. According to the structural analyses, the area is affected by polyphase deformation. This study establishes deformational sequence in the area. Mylonite zone along the Okdong Fault corresponds to the first generation of structures ($D_1$). $D_1$-structures are discrete shear zone in the Jangsan Formation and bedding parallel extensional deformation in the Cambro-Ordovician sequences. $D_2$-structures were formed prior to the sedimentation of the Jurassic Bansong Group, which are the NW-trending fold and linear structures. After sedimentation of the Bansong Group, the area is strongly affected by the Daebo Orogeny which produces NE-trending thrusts, folds and linear structures. Earlier structures were tightened and rotated toward NE. Some thrust faults did not propagate into the Bansong Group. It is suggested either the Bansong Group acted as a decoupling horizon or rest on unconformably on the thrust faults. The area is weakly affected by $D_4$-event of which structures are E-W trending folds and faults. The Jugryeong Fault clearly cut the earlier folds and thrust faults. The rocks within the fault zone were sliced and rotated during the strike-slip movements. Block rotation and transpressional features can be commonly observed.
Strata of the Central sub-basin in the Gunsan Basin, offshore, western Korea were analyzed by using integrated stratigraphy approach. As a result, five distinct unconformity-bounded units are recognized in the basin: Sequence I (Cretaceous or older(?)), Sequence II (Late Cretaceous), Sequence III (late Late Cretaceous or younger(?)), Sequence IV (Early Miocene or older(?)), Sequence V (Middle Miocene). Since the late Late Jurassic, along the Tan-Lu fault system wrench faults were developed and caused a series of small-scale strike-slip extensional basins. The sinistral movement of wrench faults continued until the Late Cretaceous forming a large-scale pull-apart basin. However, in the Early Tertiary, the orogenic event, called the Himalayan Orogeny, caused basin to be modified. From Late Eocene to Early Miocene, tectonic inversion accompanied by NW strike folds occurred in the East China. Therefore, the late Eocene to Oligocene was the main period of severe tectonic modification of the basin and Oligocene formation is hiatus. The rate of tectonic movements in Gunsan Basin slowed considerably. In that case, thermal subsidence up to the present has maintained with marine transgressions, which enable this area to change into the land part of the present basin.
Eighteen oriented samples from the Jeongsun limestone of the Joseon Supergroup are collected. The orientations of C-axis of calcite and e twin plane, the average thickness, numbers of twins and the widths of calcite grains in 10 samples are measured. Then, the twin strain, mean width, intensity of twin and relative magnitude and orientations of principal stresses are calculated using Calcite Strain Gauge program. Twin strain, mean width and intensitv rainge between 0.801%~10.927%, $0.43{\mu\textrm{m}}~2.03{\mu\textrm{m}}$, and 33.5~113.4twim/mm, respectively. Metamorphic temperatures calculated from twin show below $70^{\circ}C$, indicating that twins were developed within 2.3km depth. In five samples, two events with different orientations of principal stress produced calcite twins, while only one event produced calcite twins in five samples. The direction of the maximum stress is almost horizontal and the minimum is almost vertical, indicating that the stress regirne is identical with thrust fault. E-W and NW-SE are the most dominant directions of comressive stress and N-S and NE-SW directions are also shown. Comparision between paleostress orientations measured in the study and others indicates that the maximum horizontal stress oriented to E-W may represent the paleostress of period either from the Silurian to the Triassic or from the Silulian to the Permian. Paleostress oriented to NW-SE may be the major direction of stress during the Daeho orogeny.
FT dating of twelve zircon concentrates was carried out on the igneous rocks in the study area. The FT results from this study are younger than those of Rb-Sr or K-Ar by 20Ma, probably, due to the different closing temperature of the minerals. The obtained ages are $161{\pm}11Ma$ to $150{\pm}10Ma$ for the gneissose granodiorite and the Geochang granodiorite. It is estimated that the intermediate and basic rocks were formed at twice: one from $148{\pm}13Ma$ to $144{\pm}8Ma$, and the other from $122{\pm}8Ma$ to $104{\pm}7Ma$. In the case of the Gajo granite, the age is $96.5{\pm}5.7Ma$ to $95.4{\pm}6.4Ma$. Although considering the fact that the FT age is younger than the K-Ar age, it is likely that the magmatism in the Jurassic period was most intense in the area, which was associated with the Daebo orogeny.
Lens shaped titanomagnetite ore bodies in the Soyeonpyeong iron mine are embedded in amphibolites, which were intruded into Precambrian metasediments such as garnet-mica schist, marble, mica schist, and quartz schist. Mineral chemistry, K-Ar dating and hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopic analysis for the amphibolites and titanomagnetite ores were conducted to interpret petrogenesis of amphibolite and ore genesis of titanomagnetite iron ore deposits. Amphibolites of igneous origin have unusually high content of $TiO_2$, ranging from 0.94 to 6.39 wt.% with an average value of 4.05 wt.%. REE patterns of the different lithology of the amphibolite show the similar trend with an enrichment of LREE. Amphiboles of amphibolites are consist mainly of calcic amphiboles such as ferro-hornblende, tschermakite, ferroan pargasite, and ferroan pargasitic hornblende. K-Ar ages of hornblende from amphibolite and gneissic amphibolite were determined as $440.04{\pm}6.39Ma$ and $351.03{\pm}5.21Ma$, respectively. This indicates two metamorphic events of Paleozoic age in the Korean peninsula which are correlated with Altin orogeny in China. The titanomagnetite mineralization seems to have occurred before Cambrian age based on occurrence of orebodies and ages of host amphibolites. The Soyeonpyeong iron ores are composed mainly of titanomagnetite, ilmenite, and secondary minerals such as ilmenite and hercynite exsolved in titanomagnetite. The temperature and the oxygen fugacity estimated by the titanomagnetite-ilmenite geothermometer are $500{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ (ave. $550^{\circ}C$) and about $2{\pm}10^{-23}bar$, respectively. Hornblendes from ores and amphibolites which responsible for magnetite ore mineralization, have a relatively homogeneous isotopic composition ranging from +0.8 to +3.9 ‰ in ${\delta}^{18}O$ and from -87.8 to -113.3 ‰ in ${\delta}D$. The calculated oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the fluids which were in equilibrium with hornblende at $550^{\circ}C$, range from 2.8 to 5.9‰ in ${\delta}^{18}O_{H2O}$ and from -60.41 to -81.31 ‰ in ${\delta}D_{H2O}$. The ${\delta}^{18}O_{H2O}$ value of magnetite ore fluids are in between +6.4 to + 7.9 ‰. All of these values fall in the range of primary magmatic water. A slight oxygen shift means that $^{18}O$-depleted meteoric water be acted with basic fluids during immiscible processes between silicate and titaniferous oxide melt. Mineral chemistry, isotopic compositions, and occurences of amphibolites and orebodies, suggest that the titanomagnetite melt be separated immisciblely from the titaniferous basic magma.
Exhumation mechanism of migmatite in orogenic belts provides insights into thermo-mechanical evolution of lithosphere in association with orogeny. This study deals with kinematics of structures in and around the Gwangcheon Gneiss, as a preliminary study on exhumation mechanism, which is a main constituent of a domal structure (viz., Oseosan Dome) in the Hongseong area, southwestern margin of the Gyeonggi massif. Geological structures in the Gwangcheon Gneiss, which mainly comprises southern and northwestern part of the Oseosan Dome, generally have kinematic component of top-outward shear. This feature is likely to represent diapiric dome-up movement. In addition, a high strain zone, by which the tectonic domain involving the Gwangcheon Gneiss is bounded on the west, show structural features with normal sense of shear component. Taking available (thermo)chronological data into account, it is interpreted that activation of the high strain zone and exhumation of the Gwangcheon Gneiss occurred during Late Triassic, when the Gyeonggi massif was widely affected by post-collisional processes. It means that the Gwangcheon Gneiss was diapirically moved up and exhumed in the footwall of extensional high strain zone in association with Triassic post-collisional processes.
Precambrian gneiss complex in the Pyeongchang-Wonju area, which lies west of the Paleozoic sedimentary basin of the Yeongwol-Taebaek area, is being considered as a part of the Gyeonggi massif, but its ages of formation and metamorphic events are not well defined yet. In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb ages were determined from the gneiss complex in the area, We obtained the discrete ages of magmatic (ca. 1960 Ma) and metamorphic (ca. 1860 Ma) events through the interpretation of the SHRIMP data based on the internal structures of zircons. These are almost the same to the ages of main intrusion and metamorphism reported from the Precambrian basements of Gyeonggi, Yeongnam and Nangnim massifs of the Korean Peninsula, Ages of 3200~3300 Ma, 2900 Ma, 2660 Ma, 2430 Ma, 2260 Ma, and 2080~2070 Ma obtained from inherited cores of studied zircons are also very similar to the frequently reported ages from the basement rocks of the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs, Lower intercept age of about 270 Ma calculated from the rim data seems to indicate that the study area suffered from a late Paleozoic metamorphism (Okcheon Orogeny), but we need more reasonable and sufficient data to confirm it. According to the results of this study, it is suggested that the Bangnim group unconformably overlying the gneiss complex was deposited after the Paleoproterozoic granitic magmatism (ca. 1960 Ma) and metamorphism (ca. 1860 Ma).
We investigates geochemical and tectonic characteristics for the Triassic Bojangsan trachyte in the southern margin of the Imjingang belt. The geochemical signatures of the thracyte are characterized by enrichments of REE and HFS, and show no Nb trough, suggesting that would not experience arc magmatic processes involving continental crustal materials. The trachyte reveals within-plate setting in tectonic discrimination diagrams using immobile HFS Nb and Y elements. And the trachyte shows typical signatures of A-type volcanic rocks with high Ga abundance and is classified as A1-type volcanic rocks rich in Nb. The geochemical signatures suggest that the trachyte was produced by the differentiation of mantle-derived magmatism at the continental rift in extensional setting subsequent to a major collision during the Permo-Triassic Songrim orogeny. The results provide robust evodence to consider the Imjingang belt as an extension of the the Qinling-Dabie-Sulu belt between the North and South China blocks.
Contrasts in the style of the gold-silver mineralization in geologic and tectonic settings in Korea, together with radiometric age data, reflect the genetically different nature of hydrothermal activities, coinciding with the emplacement age and depth of Mesozoic magmatic activities. It represents a clear distinction between the plutonic settings of the Jurassic Daebo orogeny and the subvolcanic environments of the Cretaceous Bulgugsa igneous activities. Dunng the Daebo igneous activities (c.a. 200~150 (\ulcorner) Ma) coincident with orogenic time, gold mineralization took place between c.a. 195 and 135 (127 \ulcorner) Ma. The Jurassic Au deposits commonly show several characteristics; prominent association with pegmatites, low Ag/Au ratios In the ore-concentrating parts, massive vein morphology and a distinctively simple mineralogy including Fe-rich sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, Au-rich electrum, pyrrhotite and/or pyrite. During the Bulgugsa igneous activities (110~50 Ma), the precious-metal deposits are generally characterized by such features as complex vein morphology, medium to high Ag/Au ratios in the ore concentrates, and diversity of ore minerals including base-metal sulfides, pyrite, arsenopyrite, Ag-rich eletrum and native silver with Ag sulfides, Ag-Sb-As sulfosalts and he tellurides. Vein morphology, mineralogical, fluid inclusion and stable isotope results indicate the diverse genetic natures of hydrothermal systems in Korea. The Jurassic Au-dominant deposits (orogenic type) were formed at the relatively high temperature (about 300$^{\circ}$ to 45$0^{\circ}C$) and deep-crustal level (4.0$\pm$1.5 kb) from the hydrothermal fluids containing more amounts of magmatic waters ($\delta$$^{18}$$O_{H2O}$; 5~10$\textperthousand$). It can be explained by the dominant ore-depositing mechanisms as $CO_2$ boiling and sulfidation, suggestive of hypo- to mesothermal environments. In contrast, the Cretaceous Au-dominant (l13~68 Ma), Au-Ag (108~47 Ma) and AE-dominant (103~45 Ma) deposits, which correspond to volcanic-plutonic-related type, occurred at relatively low temperature (about 200$^{\circ}$ to 35$0^{\circ}C$) and shallow-crustal level (1.0$\pm$0.5 kb) from the ore-forming fluids containing more amounts of less-evolved meteonc waters ($\delta$$^{18}$$O_{H2O}$;-10~5$\textperthousand$). These characteristics of the Cretaceous precious-metal deposits can be attributed to the complekities in the ore-precipitating mechanisms (mixing, boiling, cooling), suggestive of epi- to mesothermal environments. Therefore, the differences of the emplacement depth between the Daebo and the Bulgugsa igneous activities directly influence the unique temporal and spatial association of the deposit styles.les.
