  • Photostimulated luminescence (PSL) analysis was applied to determine whether some agricultural commodities of Korean and Chinese origins have been irradiated or not. Cereals (brown rice and buckwheat) and legumes (soybean, peanut, fed bean and mung bean) were exposed to gamma irradiation at 0.5 ∼4 kGy The Korean garlic was irradiated at 0.05 ∼0.5 kGy. Cereals and mung bean were tool applicable to the PSL measurement, showing the intermediate values between the lower (700 photon counts, negative) and the upper threshold values (5,000, positive), however PSL values determined for soybean, peanut, red bean and garlic were suitable for being discriminated between nonirradiated and irradiated samples. There was no significant difference in PSL properties accgrding to the sample origins.

  • Sweet cherry is an important fruit crop with increasing economical value in Turkey and the world. A number of viruses cause diseases and economical losses in sweet cherry. Prune dwarf virus (PDV), is one of the most common viruses of stone fruits including sweet cherry in the world. In this study, PDV was detected from 316 of 521 sweet cherry samples collected from 142 orchards in 10 districts of Isparta province of Turkey by double antibody sandwich-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA). The presence of PDV in ELISA positive samples was confirmed in 37 isolates by reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. A genomic region of 862 bp containing the coat protein (CP) gene of PDV was re-amplified from 21 selected isolates by RT-PCR. Amplified DNA fragments of these isolates were purified and sequenced for molecular characterization and determining genetic diversity of PDV. Sequence comparisons showed 84-99% to 81-100% sequence identity at nucleotide and amino acid level, respectively, of the CP genes of PDV isolates from Isparta and other parts of the world. Phylogenetic analyses of the CP genes of PDV isolates from different geographical origins and diverse hosts revealed that PDV isolates formed different phylogenetic groups. While isolates were not grouped solely based on their geographical origins or hosts, some association between phylogenetic groups and geographical origins or hosts were observed.

  • Pellinus linteus has been used for the prevention of cancer traditionally. There are three origins of Pellinus linteus, Korea, China and Cambodia. However, their immunological activities were not evlauated comparatively. Thus, this study was done to evaluate immunomodulatory effects of Phellinus linteus(PL) from Korea, china and cambodia, We confirmed PL showed two major protein bands, 50 kDa and 80 kDa by protein analysis. These PL effectively upregulated the expressions of IL-2 at 10 ug/ml and GM-CSF, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12(p35), IL-12(p40), IL-18, IFN-r in all concentrations. However, Korea-PL upregulated the expression of IL-12 more effectively than the other PLs. It intended to increase NO with no significance. Those results indicate Phellinus linteus had cytokine modulating effect

  • We demonstrate that a deep learning classifier that only uses to gravitational wave (GW) detectors auxiliary channel data can distinguish various types of non-Gaussian noise transients (glitches) with significant accuracy, i.e., ≳ 80%. The classifier is implemented using the multi-scale neural networks (MSNN) with PyTorch. The glitches appearing in the GW strain data have been one of the main obstacles that degrade the sensitivity of the gravitational detectors, consequently hindering the detection and parameterization of the GW signals. Numerous efforts have been devoted to tracking down their origins and to mitigating them. However, there remain many glitches of which origins are not unveiled. We apply the MSNN classifier to the auxiliary channel data corresponding to publicly available GravitySpy glitch samples of LIGO O1 run without using GW strain data. Investigation of the auxiliary channel data of the segments that coincide to the glitches in the GW strain channel is particularly useful for finding the noise sources, because they record physical and environmental conditions and the status of each part of the detector. By only using the auxiliary channel data, this classifier can provide us with the independent view on the data quality and potentially gives us hints to the origins of the glitches, when using the explainable AI technique such as Layer-wise Relevance Propagation or GradCAM.

  • Various branch anomalies of the aortic arch have been reported, but cases with separate origins of the internal and external carotid arteries with combined direct aortic arch origin of the left vertebral artery are extremely rare. Herein, we present a rare case of aplasia of the left common carotid artery with separate origins of the ipsilateral internal and external carotid arteries and vertebral artery from the aortic arch in a 10-year-old girl. In addition, we review the embryological development and clinical implications of these anatomical variations.

  • The aim of this study was to clarify the origins of grubs which were used in the experiments, and to determine many other effects that are now written in the classical medical and herbal books. We compared the efficacy of grubs written in the herbal and medical books on the one hand, and studied the origins of grubs used in the experiments, on the other hand. The following results were obtained. There are three kinds of grub species for medicinal uses. Holorichia diomphalia Bates mainly produced in China, Cetoniidae species mainly produced in Korea, and Protaeria brevitarsis in Korean folk remedy are three species. Grubs were used in 25 experiments. Of these experiments, Holotrichia diomphalia were used 12 times, Larve of Protaeria brevitarsis 3 times, and Protaetia orientalis was used once. So, of total 25 experiments, 36%(9 experiments) did not clarify the origins of grubs used in the experiments. Currently, the grubs, which are imported from China and used in Korea, are Holotrichia diomphalia Bates from China. Current experimental study shows that grubs have efficacy for protecting liver. So the use of grubs in folk medicine is believed to be based on the scientific evidence. Efficacy of grubs, though it is not recorded in the medical books, has the effects of anti-cancer(anti-tumor), antioxidant, and anti-diabetes mellitus. The ingredients of Holotrichia are protein, peptide, fat, enzyme, mineral, and other several nutrients. Study on the grubs so far has a tendency to be done with little focus on the differen of origin of grubs. So, from now on, it needs that the origin of grubs be clarified, and the study on the efficacy from each origin be done. Considering the effects that the classical herbal books have recorded, it is necessary that more profound study proceed to prevent and treat diseases on eyes and ears, on the basis of the fact that grub has multiple ingredients to replenish the vital essence.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service biology teachers' perception of the evolution. This study was to compare the views of pre-service biology teachers with no religion with those of christian preservice teachers. Subjects were 77 pre-service biology teachers who enrolled in an university and graduate school of education located in Seoul. The instrument of this study was a questionnaire which consisted of 14 items on 2 domains: the nature of science, the origins of human beings. The key results are as follows. Most pre-service teachers showed highly understanding of the characteristics of science. However pre-service biology teachers still possessed naive views on the distinction of law and theory. In terms of the methods of science, many of the pre-service biology teachers considered scientific theories to progress through the accumulation of observation and experiments or through changes and modifications in existing theories. Compared with the pre-service teachers with no religion, christian pre-service teachers had conflicting views and misconceptions about the origins of human beings. The factors of religion were found to be one of the important barriers which prevent them from understanding the origins of human beings. The results suggested that the education program for pre-service biology teachers integrating the concepts and development process of the scientific knowledges should be effective for understanding the nature of science. For pre-service biology teachers, It is important to understand conflicting views of the christian pre-service teachers who understand creationism as a science.
