A Clinical Report about the Effect of Chungsangbangpungtang on Acne (淸上防風湯加味를 투여하여 치료한 여드름 환자에 대한 臨床報告)

  • Acne, which intrudes the pilosebaceous unit, is a chronic inflammatory disease. The symptom of comedones, papules, pustules, cysts, nodules and scar mainly raise on the face, upper back, shoulder and neck. The cause of acne is the secreting growth of sebum, abnormal follicular keratinization, the form of group of propionibacterium acnes, and the response of inflammation etc. But the original mechanism of the cytobiologic level is exactly not known yet. Chungsangbangpungtang is one of the most frequently used medical treatments for the acne. A study on 25 patients with acne who took Chungsangbangpungtang shows that the oral medication of Chungsangbangpungtang is the best efficient remedy for a person who has acne less than one year without nodules.

First Report of Anthracnose Disease Caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in Stonecrop

  • In year of 2013, anthracnose disease symptoms were observed on stem of stonecrop in a plant resource field, Southern Forest Resource Research Center, Jinju, South Korea. The disease symptoms were appeared 2-5 cm smudged irregular black spot color on the plant stems. Suspected pathogen was isolated from the lesion with surface sterilization method and identified it as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides by morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses. Artificially inoculated the isolated pathogen led to the similar disease symptom as originally observed in the field. The fungal pathogen was re-isolated from the inoculated lesion and it exhibited the same characteristics compared to the original isolate. This is the first report of anthracnose of stonecrop grown in open fields, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in Korea.

  • In this study, we performed algorithm development of automatic symptom degree for patient with hallux valgus one of the representative foot disease of morden. And this study proposes an efficient automated technique that is different from the original analog diagnosis for treatment and surgery of hallux valgus using digital image process. And we used X-Ray images of both a normal and a patient with hallux valgus in the procedure. First, we marked the standard angle on the X-Ray image of normal through Overlap & Add technique. Then we created a standard image through thinning filter and roberts filter(edge detection algorithm). Second, we used sobel filter of edge detection algorithm on the X-Ray image of patient. Moreover, we went another overlap & add technique procedure with both normal and patient image that we made. With the output, we projected the display detection image onto the screen. Finally, with the display detection image, we could measure and project the diagnosis angle of hallux valgus. And this confirms that this method is much more practical and applicable for another orthopedics disease than the prior one.

  • Objective : We examined the literature of <Life Nurturing Method and Conduction Exercise(養生方導引法)> of 《Pathogenesis and Manifestations of Food Stagnation and Indigestion(宿食不消病諸候)》 in 『Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases(諸病源候論)』 and actually implement its movement to present conduction exercise based on the principle of Korean medicine treatment. Method : We used web services for traditional Eastern Asian medical classics and some literature on 『Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases(諸病源候論)』 and its <Life Nurturing Method and Conduction Exercise(養生方導引法)〉. The original text was interpreted and the movements of <Life Nurturing Method and Conduction Exercise> were implemented according to the literature. A qi-gong(氣功) expert demonstrated the movements and we took pictures. Results : <Life Nurturing Method and Conduction Exercise(養生方導引法)> was written in the symptom of Food Stagnation and Indigestion(宿食不消候) and the symptom of food damage and excessive eating(食傷飽候) among the chapters of 《Pathogenesis and Manifestations of Food Stagnation and Indigestion(宿食不消病諸候)》. With respect to the movements and breathing, stretching your back allows qi(氣) energy to enter the lower cinnabar field(下丹田) immediately, and when the lower stomach is full of qi it can be transported upper body, leading to better communication of qi around the body. Conclusion : The practical implementation of the movements and postures will contribute to understanding the characteristics, pathology, and contents of diseases related to indigestion, and furthermore it can be widely used clinically for prevention and treatment of digestive disorders.

First Report of a Bracken Blight Disease Caused by Didymella sp. (Didymella sp.에 의한 고사리 신규 마름병 발생 보고)

  • An outbreak of new disease with leaf and stem blight symptom occurred at bracken-growing fields in Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea during the last 4 years. This new disease caused significant yield losses on bracken production in this area. We have collected diseased leaves and stems showing the blight symptom in May, July, and October 2018 to investigate causal pathogens. A total of 92 fungal isolates were obtained from the diseased samples and their pathogenicity was tested on healthy bracken leaves. From the total isolates, 22 isolates were able to produce the leaf blight symptom similar to the original one found in the fields. To identify two fungal pathogens which showed higher virulence levels compared to other pathogenic isolates, we constructed phylogenetic trees using the nucleotide sequences of genes for ribosomal RNA, RNA polymerase beta subunit, beta tubulin, and internal transcribed region. Most phylogenetic trees constructed indicate that both isolates, which are identical to each other, reside in a clade of the genus Didymella and possibly similar to D. rumicicola or D. acetosellae. Nevertheless, the exact identification of these pathogens at the species level needs further investigations. This is the first report of a blight disease on bracken by Didymella sp.

Diagnostic Yield of Diffusion-Weighted Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients with Transient Global Amnesia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

  • Objective: To investigate the diagnostic yield of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) and identify significant parameters affecting diagnostic yield. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases was conducted to identify studies that assessed the diagnostic yield of DWI in patients with TGA. The pooled diagnostic yield of DWI in patients with TGA was calculated using the DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were also performed of slice thickness, magnetic field strength, and interval between symptom onset and DWI. Results: Twenty-two original articles (1732 patients) were included. The pooled incidence of right, left, and bilateral hippocampal lesions was 37% (95% confidence interval [CI], 30-44%), 42% (95% CI, 39-46%), and 25% (95% CI, 20-30%) of all lesions, respectively. The pooled diagnostic yield of DWI in patients with TGA was 39% (95% CI, 27-52%). The Higgins I2 statistic showed significant heterogeneity (I2 = 95%). DWI with a slice thickness ≤ 3 mm showed a higher diagnostic yield than DWI with a slice thickness > 3 mm (pooled diagnostic yield: 63% [95% CI, 53-72%] vs. 26% [95% CI, 16-40%], p < 0.01). DWI performed at an interval between 24 and 96 hours after symptom onset showed a higher diagnostic yield (68% [95% CI, 57-78%], p < 0.01) than DWI performed within 24 hours (16% [95% CI, 7-34%]) or later than 96 hours (15% [95% CI, 8-26%]). There was no difference in the diagnostic yield between DWI performed using 3T vs. 1.5T (pooled diagnostic yield, 31% [95% CI, 25-38%] vs. 24% [95% CI, 14-37%], p = 0.31). Conclusion: The pooled diagnostic yield of DWI in TGA patients was 39%. DWI obtained with a slice thickness ≤ 3 mm or an interval between symptom onset and DWI of > 24 to 96 hours could increase the diagnostic yield.

Genetic analysis of canine parvovirus vaccine strains in Korea

  • After the original identification of canine parvovirus (CPV) type 2 (CPV-2) in 1978, new antigenic variants such as CPV-2a, CPV-2b and CPV-2c have become widespread in the most countries. In this study, the genetic analysis of canine parvovirus was investigated in a total of 13 CPV vaccines, which have been licensed in Korea since late 1980s, and a field isolate of CPV from a dog with CPV infection clinical symptom. The partial VP2 gene of CPV was amplified and sequenced from 13 vaccine strains and one field isolate. The results showed that of the 13 vaccine strains, 10 strains belong to the CPV-2, 2 strains to CPV-2b, the remaining and one isolate to CPV-2a type, respectively. Several mutations of amino acids were detected at residues of the critical region of the commercial vaccine strains. These data suggest that new type of vaccines containing CPV-2a or CPV-2b/2c type may be required for the better prevention of new CPV infection in dog population in Korea, because CPV-2 contained in most licensed vaccines has been replaced by antigenic variants designated CPV-2a or CPV-2b/c in the worldwide dog population.

  • Objective : To find the main symptoms associated with atopic dermatitis and to get the utmost out of information about cause, treatment are contribute in the treatment of atopic dermatitis rather than looking for ways through how to connect modern atopic dermatitis and a listed symptom of classic literature. Method : In this research, we recorded about the main symptoms of atopic dermatitis such as itch, erythema, edema, pus and furuncle. Results : There are the cause of many symptoms accompanied by atopic dermatitis in the body that recorded unpreparedness[虛], Wind[風], Fever[熱], unpreparedness & interruption of vitality hole[氣穴不通], unpreparedness & Wind, Wind Fever[風熱], Wind Coldness[風寒], Wind Humidity[風濕], Humidity Fever[濕熱], Wind Humidity Fever, Wind of Lungs[肺風], Wind of Lungs and Spleen[脾肺風], the Kidney Wind poison[腎臟風毒], Wind of Lungs Fever, Worm[蟲], miscellaneous vitality[雜氣], unpreparedness and Fever of Heart[心虛熱], old sore of kidney poison[久瘡腎臟風毒].

Study of 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong' in Shang-han-lun's 15th Text (상한론(傷寒論) 15조(條)의 '기기상충(其氣上衝)'에 대한 고찰)

  • This study is about 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong(其氣上衝)' in Shang-han-lun("傷寒論")'s 15th text. Shang-han-lun is a basic text about pathology of Traditional Korean Medicine written by Zhang-Zhong-Jing(張仲景). In that text, there are so many cases of people having some symptoms, how to treat them, and which herb medicine to give them, and the side effects of wrong treatments. In those cases, there is symptom said 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong(其氣上衝)' in the 15th text. But there is no detailed description about that. So this study is aimed at studying exactly meaning of the 15th text's 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong(其氣上衝)' by comparing historical medical practitioners and analyzing with the bibliography, pathology, herb pharmacology, herbal medicine, pharmacology part. In the bibliographical analysis, this sentence has been transmitted from original Shan-han-lun written by Zhang-Zhong-Jing(張仲景). Former part of this sentence "太陽病, 下之後, 其氣上衝者, 可與桂枝湯". is most correspondent part with Zhong-Jing(仲景)'s. And there is correctional possibility about latter part.

A Study on "Weakness of Yangqi causes Kuang(陽氣衰者爲狂)" in Jinkuiyaolue(金匱要略) - Focused on the concept of 'Yangqi' - (『금궤요약(金匱要略)』의 '양기쇠자위광(陽氣衰者爲狂)'에 대한 고찰(考察) - '양기(陽氣)'의 개념(槪念)을 중심으로 -)

  • Objective : Korean medicine normally explained Kuang as a symptom arising from the exaltation caused by excessive yangqi. Therefore, a lot of arguments existed surrounding Jinkuiyaolue's explanation of Kuang as Yangqishuai. Therefore, the paper will review the exisitng opinions regarding this issue, and studied the original meaning of Jinkuiyaolue. Method : First, the opinions of the historical doctors related to the clauses within Jinkuiyaolue are reviewed. Existing opinions are divided into categories, and their meanings and limitations are analyzed. Followed by this, Huangdineijing and later generations' annotations were studied to discover a way to distinquish Yin and Yang of Jinkuiyaolue's Yangqi within the Sinqi. Result & Conclusion : The disease pathogen as explained within Jinkuiyaolue can be understood as an activity of Simqi, and it's difficult to view it as the Yin and Yang in terms of blood qi. Therefore, Jinkuiyaolue refers to the deficiency in terms of the aspect of Yang within the activity of Sinqi. The Yangqi of this can be viewed as an activity of Shenming.
