  • Objectives : Paemo is a phlegm-resolving drug with cold properties and classified 5 kinds which come from 11 species of original plant. All the more, according to literature record, 20 species of original plant were used. As a natural result, these are easily to confuse and there are a lot of counterfeit product. So we are to present a differential standard of Paemo. Methods : It was planed a differential standard form through outer appearance of the original plant and outer appearance in the form of each medicines which was collected local market or field for 11 species which is listed in Korea or China pharmacopeia. Results : It was possible to distinguish the orignal plant between Fritillaria and Bolbostemma through its stem shape. In Fritillaria of original plant, it was possible to distinguish through its width of leaf, number of leafy bracts, color and position of flower and shape of leaf apex. In outer appearance in the form of each medicines, there are difference in color and texture of medicine between Fritillaria and Bolbostemma and there are difference in size, shape, size of inner and outter fleshy leaf of bulb, pattern of surface and apex of fleshy leaf of bulb among 10 Fritillaria species. Conclusions : This study presents various differences in the outer appearance of the original plant and the outer appearance in the form of each medicines among Paemo. It will be helpful to further applied research.

  • Taxa of genus Callicarpa in Korea were described taxonomically and studied interspecific relationships, based on the leaf length, leaf width, peduncle length, fruit width and geograhic distribution. Among 12 taxa reported previously in Korea, 3 forms of C. japonica were unifed to original species, C. japonica var. glabra was reserved, Whereas C. shirasawana was not distributed in Korea. As a result, 7 taxa belonging to 3 species, 4 varieties of genus Callicarpa remained. C. japonica complex is considered to be more advanced among the species compared with the bract shapes.

  • Hemicycliophora litoralis is newly collected from Korea. Korean population is well matched and within a range of original description and additional record from Solomon island in de Man's of L, b, c, V, R, Rex, Ran, Roes, RV (ant), annule, excretory pore, stylet length, and tail length. Differences are observed in RV and RVan. RV and RVan of original description was 55 (48-69) and 14 (10-19) but Korean population is 68 (61-76) and 22 (19-24), respectively. H. litoralis described from Solomon island has RVan of 19.6 (17-23) and is similar to Korean population. H. litoralis from Solomon island has slight higher Rst value of 39 (35-59) compared to Korean population of 33.5 (29-38). The measurements of MB (%), s, G1, G2 values are newly given.

  • Ostericum praeteritum $K_{ITAGAWA}(=Angelica\;koreana\;M_{AXIM}.)$ has been regarded as the original plant of Korean Qianghuo. The morphological and anatomical examination were made on Korean Qianghuo (crude drug fruits, purchased at markets and cultivated), and compared with Gangwhal $(O.\;praeteritum\;K_{ITAG}.)$. It was found that 3 species $A.\; polymorpha\;M_{AXIM}.,O.\;grosseserratum\;K_{ITAG}.,\;and\;O.\;sieboldi \;N_{AKAI}$. were different from Gangwhal. The original plant of Korean Qianghuo was identified as $A.\;polymorpha\;M_{AXIM}$, through this study.

  • Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) are widely used medicinal plants with similar morphology but different medicinal efficacy. Roots, flowers, and processed products of Korean and American ginseng can be difficult to differentiate from each other, leading to illegal trade in which one species is sold as the other. This study was carried out to develop convenient and reliable chloroplast genome-derived DNA markers for authentication of Korean and American ginseng in commercial processed products. One codominant marker could reproducibly identify both species and intentional mixtures of the two species. We further developed a set of species-unique dominant DNA markers. Each species-specific dominant marker could detect 1% cross contamination with other species by low resolution agarose gel electrophoresis or quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Both markers were successfully applied to evaluate the original species from various processed ginseng products purchased from markets in Korea and China. We believe that high-throughput application of this marker system will eradicate illegal trade and promote confident marketing for both species to increase the value of Korean as well as American ginseng in Korea and worldwide.

  • Prunus choreiana, invalidly published without Latin description in the original text, is validated here. The species has been known as a Korean endemic plant species of deciduous shrub, and a typical calciferous plant mainly distributed in Pyeongnam Province and Hamnam Province, North Korea. However, recently new population was reported from Mt. Myon and another new population is reported here from Mt. Jabyeong in Gangwon-do.

  • The original plant for a medicine, Forsythia collected from Wui-Sung country, Kyungsangpuk-do, Korea, was identified as Forsythia viridissima by its characteristic greenish bark and clearly square stem as observed from the culture works at the Forest Experiment Station of Sung Kyung Kwan University. F. viridissima, an indigenic plant of China, is believed to be introduced to Korea as a nursary stock or brought by seeds sometime in the past. In Korea at present two other species of Forsythia, namely, F. suspensaa and F. japonica have also been cultured besides F. viridissima as an ornamental.

  • We monitored the hitchhiker insect pests from the international vessels entering into Korea in 2021. As a result, total of 581 individuals were detected by the survey based on visual inspection with naked eye. Among them, 500 individuals were identified as 244 species of 65 families under 11 orders through the integrative taxonomic method with DNA barcoding and morphological reexamination, but the remaining 81 individuals were classified as only to the family level. Of the 244 species identified, 26 species were determined to be not-distributed species in Korea (two Orthoptera, two Hemiptera, one Megaloptera, five Coleoptera, three Hymenoptera, and 13 Lepidoptera). Among them, two species, Sagra femorata (Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera) and Dendrolimus punctatus (Lasiocampidae, Lepidoptera), were discovered as 'Regulated species' listed by Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, South Korea. Therefore, we reported on the 26 not-distributed species in Korea and provided inanimate pathway information such as navigation routes on the vessels hitchhiking the species, state of the samples at the time of detection, identification results and original distribution for the detailed monitoring and the risk analysis on the species.

A Taxonomic Reappraisal of Ceramium fastigiatum Harvey (Rhodophyta, Ceramiaceae) (홍조 Ceramium fastigiatum Harvey의 분류학적 재검토)

  • Because Ceramium fastigiatum Harvey (1834) is a later homonym of C. fastigiatum Roth (1806), a quite different plant from the former, it becomes illegitimate and must be rejected under the Article 64 of International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. For this reason, we suggest to give a new name, Ceramium fastigiramosum Boo et Lee, to the former species, keeping the original specific epithet‘fastigiatum’. The morphology of vegetative and reproductive structures is re-examined. The life history is confirmed as a Polysiphonia-type in laboratory culture.
