Effect of Particle Loading Ratio and Orifice Exit Velocity on a Particle-Laden Jet

  • In order to design a shear coaxial injector of solid particles with water, basic experiments on a particle laden jet are necessary. The purpose of the present study is to understand the effect of particle loading ratio on the particle spray characteristics (i.e. spreading angle, distribution of particle number density, velocity profiles, and particle developing region length). Hydro-reactive Al2O3 particles with a primary particle diameter of 35~50 ${\mu}m$ are used in this experiment. An automated particle feeder was designed to supply constant particle mass flowrates. Air is used as the carrier gas. To determine the air velocity at the orifice exit, tracers (aluminum oxide, 0.5~2 ${\mu}m$ primary diameter) are also supplied by a tracer feeder. A plain orifice type injector with 3 mm diameter, and 20 mm length was adopted. Particle image velocimetry is used to measure the mean and fluctuating velocity components along the axial and radial directions.

  • The purpose of this study was experimentally to investigate the disintegration process and disintegration mechanism when co-axial air flows vertically for the longest smooth liquid jet. These were affected by liquid velocity, air velocity, air-to-liquid diameter ratio, nozzle shape, and air-liquid contacting position. That is, this process of disintegration of the liquid jet was similar to that occurred when liquid pressure was increased. At Reynolds number of 10, 000 and below, the changes in the breakup length represent different tendency according to liquid flow rate. The influence of air flow on the disintegration of liquid jet was different according to air-to-liquid diameter ratio, air orifice diameter, nozzle shape and contacting position of liquid and air. In particular, when the tip of liquid nozzle was inside the air orifice, the effect of air flow was the larger than outside the air orifice. The effect of liquid mass flow rate on the change rate of the breakup length was also different.

  • Performance of DI diesel engine with high fuel injection method is directly related to the emission characteristics and fuel consumption. At present, diesel injection system with piezo element is replacing conventional solenoid type due to their faster electro-mechanical properties. In this study, it was investigated the sensitivity characteristics regarding internal hydraulic modeling based on the AMESim environment of piezo-driven injector The analytic parameter for this study defined such as In/Out orifice, injection hole's diameter and driven voltage on piezo stack. As the results, it was shown that these parameter influence on a fast response characteristics of piezo-driven injector. Also we found fuel pressure recovery time is faster about 0.1 ms due to larger IN orifice diameter. And larger OUT orifice diameter occurs maximum pressure drop with faster its timing of about 0.2 ms.

A Study on the Features of the Velocity Distribution and the Static Pressure Distribution of Oil on a Low-velocity Piston (저속용 피스톤에 가해지는 오일의 속도분포와 정압분포 특성)

  • This study was conducted in order to design a piston, part of a shock absorber, and the findings after examining the features of the velocity distribution and the static pressure distribution of oil on a low-velocity piston are as follow. The compression speed of oil passing through an 0.9 mm orifice was 0.0156~0.0642 m/s, and the velocity vector of the velocity distribution and the static pressure distribution had a greater tendency to rotate when the velocity increased. In case of the velocity vector of the velocity distribution and the static pressure distribution with an 0.8mm orifice, the speed changed secondarily, the second pressure-drop was observed and as for the distribution of the streamline around the orifice, a vortex was produced around the center. As for the velocity distribution of oil passing from the compression cylinder to the compact pipe, the velocity was greater in orifice of small diameter. Also, the greater the pressure difference was between the compression cylinder and the compact cylinder, the greater the force it was upon the piston.

  • This paper investigated the characteristics of the turbulent incompressible flow past the orifice ring in an axi-symmetric pipe. The flow field was the turbulent pulsatile flow for Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^{5}$ which was defined based on the maximum velocity and the pipe diameter at the inlet, with oscillating frequence $(f_{os})=1/4{\pi}$ which was considered as quasi-steady state frequence. In the present investigation, finite analytic method was used to solve the governing equations in Navier Stokes and turbulent transport formulations. Particularly at high Reynolds number and low oscillation frequency, the effects of orifice ring on the flow were numerically investigated. The separation zone behind the orifice ring during the acceleration phase was found to be decreased. However, during the deceleration phase, the separation behind the orifice ring for pulsatile flow continuously grow to a size even larger than that in steady flow. The pressure drop in steady flow was found to be constant and always positive while for pulsatile flow the pressure drop change with time. And large turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation rate were found to be located in the region where the flow passes through the orifics ring. The maximum turbulent kinetic energy, generally occurs along the shear layer where the velocity gradient is large.

  • This study conducted to optimize the design and operation of orifice typed distribution channels which were generally constructed to link the rapid mixing process and flocculation/sedimentation basin. To accomplish the goal of this study, programming step method using FORTRAN 90, was applied it to simulate the performance of existing distribution channel in the selected S DWTP (Drinking Water Treatment Plant). The proposed step method program was validated in terms of the feasibility with comparison between the measurement and prediction value in each orifice. From the evaluation results of the current conditions with the design and operation, it was revealed that the existing gradient of the tapered channel is not appropriate. Also, we suggested that in the case of the inlet width being 3.5m, reducing the downstream width by about 0.5m would make more equitable distribution flow in the channel. Consequently, dealing with various conditions of the design and operation with distribution channel, we could conclude that for the parallel typed channel, as the width is wider and the diameter of orifice is smaller, the more equitable distribution occur. In addition, the inlet flowrate and the number of orifice can affect the flow velocity in the channel.

  • An experimental study was conducted to understand spray characteristics of rotating fuel nozzle by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a fuel injection system, high speed rotational system, and acrylic case. The test is performed with several diameters and number of injection orifices. Spray characteristics such as droplet size and velocity are measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer). From the test results, we could understand the spray characteristics of rotating fuel nozzle with orifice number and diameter.

  • A numerical model for the analysis and design of orifice pulse tube refrigerators has been developed. Heat transfer coefficient and friction factors in the model vary with time, and the real physical properties such as thermal conductivity and viscosity were used to improve the accuracy of the model. Thermodynamic behavior of the working fluid within pulse tube refrigerators was investigated and the effect of design parameters, such as reservoir volume, orifice diameter, and NTU of regenerator, on the cooling load and COP was shown.

  • Generally, the flow hunting is observed in almost all of the orifice meters but the intensity of the flow hunting is different at each metering system. So, we were getting some Questions as follows; why such a difference occurs and whether it influence to metering error rate or not. To investigate the flow hunting characteristics, we are trying to examine the flow characteristics around the orifice meter when the transient flow or pressure is generated at after the PCV(Pressure Control Valve) by 3D CFD method. And we have compared numerical results with experimental results at M - PCV station in order to clarify the relations with both the metering-pipeline diameter and flow rate. Finally, we can show some major factors influencing to the flow hunting and propose some correcting scheme of the flow hunting equation.

  • The effects of swirl chamber's diameter and length on injector's dynamic characteristics were investigated through an experimental study. A mechanical pulsator was installed in front of the manifold of a swirl injector which produces pressure oscillations in the feed line. Pressure in the manifold, liquid film thickness in the orifice and the pressure in the orifice were measured in order to understand the dynamic characteristic of the simplex swirl injector with varying geometry. A direct pressure measuring method (DPMM) was used to calculate the axial velocity of the propellant in the orifice and the mass flow rate through the orifice. These measured and calculated values were analyzed to observe the amplitude and phase differences between the input value in the manifold and the output values in the orifice. As a result, a phase-amplitude diagram was obtained which exhibits the injector's response to certain pressure fluctuation inputs. The mass flow rate was calculated by the DPMM and measured directly through the actual injection. The effect of mean manifold pressure change was insignificant with the frequency range of manifold pressure oscillation used in this experiment. Mass flow rate was measured with the variation of injector's geometries and amplitude of the mass flow rate was observed with geometry and pulsation frequency variation. It was confirmed that the swirl chamber diameter and length affect an injector's dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, the direction of geometry change for achieving dynamic stability in the injector was suggested.
