Chlorination inhibition on the organic removal activity of activated sludge microorganism was investigated in this study. It is well known that chlorination improves the settleability of filamentous bulking sludge through the selective impediment of filamentous microorganisms. However, it is based on the declination of effluent water quality after actual chlorination in dairy wastewater treatment plant. In case of the activated sludge which was exposed in the suggested concentration of chlorine $7.5\;mgCl_2/gVSS/day$ for the filamentous bulking control, decrease of organic uptake rate of $4.9\~24.0\%$, and dentrification rate of $24.8\~30.3\%$ ware shown in comparison to the control group which was not reacted with chlorine. As a result of comparing floc size of activated sludge microorganism, the average of floc diameter in the chlorine exposed group was $150\;{\mu}m$, which displays $25\%$ decrease compared with the control group.
Aerated submerged bio-film (ASBF) pilot plant has been developed. The presented studies optimized an inexpensive method of enhanced wastewater treatment. The objectives of this research were to describe pilot scale experiments for efficient removal of dissolved organic and nitrogen compounds by using ASBF reactor in plug-flow reactor (PFR) and improve understanding of dissolved organic matter and nitrogen compounds removal rates with dynamic relationships between heterotrophs and autotrophs in the fixed-film reactor. This research explores the possibility of enhancing the performance of shallow wastewater treatment lagoons through the addition of specially designed structures. This direct gas-phase contact should increase the oxygen transfer rate into the bio-film, as well as increase the micro-climate mixing of water, nutrients, and waste products into and out of the bio-film. This research also investigated the efficiency of dissolved organic matter and ammonia nitrogen removals in the ASBF. As it was anticipated, nitrification activity was highest during periods when the flow rate was lower, but it seemed to decline during times when the flow rate was highest. And ammonia nitrogen removal rates were more sensitive than dissolved organic matter removal rates when flow rates exceeded 2.2 L/min.
Landfill leachate constitutes one of the most polluting wastewaters. Their treatment was considered difficult due to the presence of high concentration of organic matter, ammonia, toxic organic compounds and heavy metals. Biological processes were found to be effective in several cases, but they are limited by the presence of inhibitory compounds in leachate. In this study we develop a biological process for the leachate biodetoxification using Trametes trogii (T. trogii; CLBE55). Results show that laccase activity, mycelia growth and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies varied depending on the leachate and ammonium concentration. Indeed T. trogii was able to grow in the presence of low concentration of landfill leachate of 10 and 30%. In fact, the biomass produced was 4.7 and 3.7 g/L, respectively leading to a COD removal of 66 and 53%, respectively. However, when the concentration of the introduced leachate exceeds 30%, the treatment efficiency and particularly the COD removal decreases to reach 15% at 100% leachate. The effect of the ammonia was also studied and results showed that the addition of 5 g/L of ammonia inhibited totally the production of laccase and the COD removal.

Natural organic matter (NOM) removal by physico-chemical adsorption and biological oxidation was investigated in five slow sand filters with different media depths. Non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon(NPDOC) and $UV_{254}$ absorbance were measured to evaluate the characteristics of NOM removal at different filter depths. Removal efficiency of NOM was in the range of 10-40% throughout the operation time. At start-up of the filters packed with clean sand media, NOM was probably removed by physico-chemical adsorption on the surface of sand through the overall layer of filter bed. However, when Schumutzdecke layer was built up after 30 days operation, the major portion of NPDOC was removed by biological oxidation and/or bio-sorption in lower depth above 50 mm. NOM removal rate in the upper 50 mm filter bed was $0.82hr^{-1}$. It was about 20 times of the rate($0.04hr^{-1}$) in the deeper filter bed. Small portion of NPDOC could be removed in the deeper filter bed by both bio-sorption and biodegradation. SEM analysis and VSS measurement clearly showed the growth of biofilm in the deeper filter bed below 500 mm, which possibly played an important role in the NOM removal by biological activity besides the physco-chemical adsorption mechanism
Post-synthesis is used to synthesize organic hybrid inorganic mesoporous sieves. In this method, the activity and structure of the base sieve are crucial to obtain the definable hybrid materials. The chemical and physical properties of the base can be largely changed either by the final step of its synthesizing processes, by template removal which is accomplished with the oxidative thermal decomposition (burning) method or by solvent extraction method. In this paper we compared two methods for the post-synthesis of organic hybrid MCM-48. When the template was extracted with HCl/alcohol mixture, the final product showed larger pore size, larger pore volume and better crystallinity compared to the case of the thermal decomposition. The reactivity of the surface silanol group of template free MCM-48 was also checked with an alkylsilylation reagent $CH_2=CHSi(OC_2H_5)_3$. Raman and $^{29}Si$ NMR spectra of MCM-48 in the test reaction indicated that more of the organic group was grafted to the surface of the sample after the template was removed with the solvent extraction method. Direct synthesis of vinyl-MCM-48 was also investigated and its characteristics were compared with the case of post-synthesis. From the results, it was suggested that the structure and chemical reactivity can be maintained in the solvent extraction method and that organic grafting after the solvent extraction can be a good candidate to synthesize a definable hybrid porous material.
Peroxidase as one of the organic enzyme catalyst is useful for the oxidation treatment of various aromatic compounds such as phenols. The peroxidase content of Oenanthe javanica was 24.85 unit/g-fw in leaf, 5.74 unit/g-fw in stem, and 34.69 unit/g-fw in root respectively. The crude peroxidase extracted from Oenanthe javanka can be kept under low temperature (-70$\circ$C) condition for 6 months with the maximum 1% activity reduction. The optimum conditions of removal for 100 ppm phenol was pH 6, hydrogen peroxide 3.5 mM, peroxidase activity 8 unit/ml, temperature 20$\circ$C respectively. In the wide range of concentration from 50 ppm to 750 ppm phenol reveals average 54% removal rate under the same peroxidase activity (8 unit/ml) and different amount of hydrogen peroxide proportional to phenol concentration. Especially at the concentration of 100 ppm the maximum phenol removal rate was 72%.

In this study, the efficiency of treatment of moisture and organic matter in food waste was analyzed according to the air blast volume and preheating using the bio-drying method. Te mount of air blast volume and preheating were determined by the evaluation of temperature and CO2 during food waste treatment using the bio-drying method. As a results, the increase in the air blast volume increased the moisture removal efficiency and removal rate, but, lowered the temperature inside the bio-drying by the decease in microbial activity. In order to maintain the activity of microorganisms, it was estimated that it was necessary to inject an appropriate air blast rate according th the properties of the food waste. In this study, the injection of air blast volume at 15L/min was optimal. It was evaluated that the organic matter and water removal rates according to the presence or absence of air preheating, the organic matter removal rate and water removal rate increased by 3-5% when air preheating was not performed. Also, there was no internal aggregation caused by the generation of condensate inside the bio-drying. Therefore, for effective bio-drying of food waste, it is necessary to maintain an appropriate air blast volume to maintain microbial activity, and it is considered that injection through preheating of air is required.

A novel hybrid system composed of a biotrickling filter and an activated sludge reactor was investigated under the conditions of four different SRTs (sludge retention times). The performance of the hybrid reactor was found to be directly comparable among the four different sludge ages. Discernible differences in the removal performance were observed among four different SRTs of 2, 4, 6, and 8 days. High removal efficiency was achieved by continuous circulation of activated sludge over the immobilized mixture culture, which allowed on pH control, addition of nutrients, and removal of paint VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The results also showed that the removal efficiency for a given pollutant depends on the activity of microorganisms based on the SRT. As the SRT increased gradually from 2 to 8 days, the average removal performance decreased. The highest removal rate was achieved at the SRT of 2 days at which the highest OUR (oxygen uptake rate), $6.1mg-O_2/liter-min$ was measured. Biological activity in the recycle microbes decreased to a much lower level, $3.6mg-O_2/liter-min$ at a SRT of 8 days. It is thus believed that young microorganisms were more active and more efficient for the VOCs removal of low concentrations and high flow rates. The apparent correlation of $R^2=0.996$ between the average removal efficiency and the average OUR at each SRTs suggests that VOCs degradation by young cells significantly affected the overall removal efficiency for the tested SRTs.
Dispersion of coagulant should be completed in a fraction of a second before the metal hydroxide precipitate has form. For the reason so-called pump diffusion flash mixing (PDFM) have been proposed, and PDFM is one of reasonable methods to quickly disperse the hydrolyzing metal salts. In this study, therefore, we attempt to understand the difference of removal characteristics of natural organic matter (NOM) between pump diffusion flash mixing (PDFM) and conventional rapid mixing (CRM) for coagulation in a water treatment system, and to enhance the removal of NOM through the improved mixing process. DOC and turbidity removal by PDFM higher than those by CRM, while SUVA value of water treated by PDFM was high as compared with that by CRM. Hydrophilic NOM was more effectively removed by PDFM than CRM, since charge neutralization effect increased by quick dispersion of coagulant. The DBP formation potentials due to NOM was effectively reduced by the improved mixing (i.e., PDFM) for coagulation and could be controlled through decrease in concentration of precursor rather than reduction of activity with disinfectant.
We investigated the association of Chlorella vulgaris and E. coli W9110 in removal of total organic carbon with the lab-scaled continuous river water flow system (CRWFS). Artificial wastewater was applied at two levels of organic carbon concentration; 1,335 $mg{\cdot}l^{-1}$ in the treatment (T)-1 and 267 $mg{\cdot}l^{-1}$ in T-2. The highest densities of C. vulgaris were $8.3{\times10^6\;cells{\cdot}ml^{-1}$ in T-1 and $6.9{\times}10^6\;cells{\cdot}ml^{-1}$ in T-2. The maximum densities of E. coli W3110 were $2.0{\times}10^8$ clony forming unit (CFU)${\cdot}ml^{-1}$ in T-1 and $3.9{\times}10^8\;CFU{\cdot}ml^{-1}$ in T-2. The densities increased during the first 11 days in T-q and 4 days in T-2, and decreased rapidly till 35th day, then increased slightly afterwards. This trend was prominent in T-2. It was inplied that wider range of nutrients was required in the growth of heterotrophic bacteria in T-2 than in T-1. The algal biomass should be increased effectively for the successful removal of organic carbon.
