Design of Spinning and Subsequent Drawing Parameters to Improve the Mechanical Properties of PVA Fibers

  • In this study, efforts were made to enhance the mechanical properties of the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fibers of medium molecular weight(number-average degree of polymerization=1735) varying the ratio in $DMSO/H_2O$ mixed solvent and spinning/drawing conditions. The gel fibers prepared from pure DMSO were opaquely frozen in the coagulating bath of $-20^{\circ}C$. However, transparent gel fibers were formed without freezing for the mixture to contain water less than 80wt%. As the amount of water in the mixture increased the residual solvent in the coagulated gel fibers decreased ranging from 85 to 42wt%. The complex viscosity increased with increasing PVA concentration in 80/20 $DMSO/H_2O$ exhibiting remarkable shear thinning at 18wt%. In the Cole-Cole plot, the 18wt% PVA solutions gave a deviated curve from 12 and 15wt% ones. Thus the optimum PVA concentration for the spinning processing of medium MW PVA solutions in 80/20 $DMSO/H_2O$ was determined to 18wt% with rheological concept. Low degree of drawing during hot drawing process in the dry state was available for high bath draft in the coagulation bath. The most improved mechanical properties were observed by applying the highest possible draw ratio attained by reducing bath draft over multi-step drawing process. In the given bath draft, linear relationship was observed between both tensile strength and modulus and draw ratio showing the inflection points at the draw ratio of 19.5 and 18.0 for tensile strength and modulus, respectively.

Interaction of TiO2 Films on Carbon Fibers with Toluene

  • $TiO_2$ thin films were synthesized on carbon fibers using chemical vapor deposition. We show that these films can exhibit extraordinarily high absorption capacities of toluene vapor. Such an absorption phenomenon of toluene at room temperature was not found for other $TiO_2$ samples. Upon toluene absorption change in the color (darkening) of the film was found, indicating that these films can be used as an indicator of the existence of volatile organic compounds in the indoor environments. By X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), a high concentration of OH species and a unique layered structure were found for the $TiO_2$ films and these could be related to their high absorption capacity of toluene.

Performance of Fixing Agents in Controlling Micro-Stickies in Recycled Newsprint Pulp

  • The microstickes control effects of some fixing agents, including an inorganic PAC, an organic polyamine (PA) and polydiallydimethyl ammonium chloride (Pdadmac), and a high cationic starch (HCS), were investigated, together with their effects on wet end performances and physical properties of handsheets. Despite that the HCS and Pdadmac had lower cationic charge densities than the PA and PAC (the HCS being even lower), they gave higher zeta potentials to fibers, and lower turbidities, cationic demands and residual COD contents to the pulp liquid phases than the PA and PAC did. In all cases, the HCS showed even better effects than the Pdadmac. In addition, drainage speed was also much higher by the HCS treatments although paper formation was worsened. All the phenomena showed that the HCS can fix more dissolved and colloidal substances to cellulose fibers, indicating that the HCS functioned mainly with flocculation and even hydrogen bonding mechanisms. Data on optical properties further indicated that the HCS interacted preferentially with colloidal substances, since it fixed more 'dirty' microstickes to fibers which decreased more sheet brightness while increasing more sheet opacity (with both higher light absorption and scattering coefficients). Interestingly, the organic fixing agents did not decrease tensile, tearing, and folding strengths of paper sheets made from 100% recycled newsprint pulp, except when they were dosed in high amounts. On the contrary, the inorganic PAC had more serious negative effects on the strength properties, especially on folding endurance. The study suggested that proper use of the HCS can lead to better microstickies control effects than traditional agents and methods.

광섬유와 LED를 활용한 마카쥬(marquage) 기법의 스마트 토트백 개발 (Development of Smart Tote Bags with Marquage Techniques Using Optical Fiber and LEDs)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop smart bags that combining fashion-specific trends and smart information technologies such as light-emitting diodes(LED) and optic fibers by grafting marquage techniques that have recently become popular as part of eco-fashion. We applied e-textiles by designing leather tote bags that could show off LED luminescence. A total of two tote bags, a white-colored peacock design and a black-colored paisley design, divided the LED's light-emitting method into two types, incremental lighting and random light-emission to suit each design, and the locations of the optical fibers were also reversed depending upon the design. The production of circuits for the LEDs and optical fibers was based on the design, and a flexible conductive fabric was laser-cut instead of wire line and attached to the circuit-line location. A separate connector was underwent three-dimensional(3D)-modeling and was connected to high-luminosity LEDs and optic fiber bundles. The optical fiber logo part expressed a subtle image using a white-colored LED, which did not offset the LED's sharp luminous effects, suggesting that using LEDs with fiber optics allowed for the expression of each in harmony without being heterogeneous. Overall, the LEDs and fiber optic fabric were well-harmonized in the fashion bag using marquage techniques, and there was no sense of it being a mechanical device. Also, the circuit part was made of conductive fabric, which is an e-textile product that feels the same as a thin, flexible fabric. The study confirmed that the bag was developed as a smart wearable product that could be used in everyday life.

방폭 성능 강화용 유기계 섬유보강재 제조 및 이를 혼입한 섬유보강 콘크리트의 휨성능 평가 (Organic fiber reinforcement for Performance improvement of Blast resistance and Flexural Performance Evaluation of Fiber reinforced concrete using organic fiber reinforcement)

  • 본 연구에서는 방폭 성능 강화를 위하여 유기계 다발형 섬유보강재를 제안하였으며, 제안된 섬유는 폴리아미드섬유, PET섬유 및 아라미드섬유이고, ATY 가공방식을 통해 다발형 단섬유를 제조하였다. 유기계 섬유보강재를 혼입한 콘크리트의 방폭 성능 평가를 대신하여 변형에너지 흡수 능력을 평가하였으며, 이를 위해 4점 휨시험과 노치보의 3점 휨시험을 수행하였다. 3종류의 유기계 단섬유를 혼입한 콘크리트의 휨성능 평가 결과, PET섬유 보강 콘크리트가 가장 우수한 결과를 나타내어, 방폭 성능 강화를 위하여 상당히 효과적일 것으로 판단된다.

광촉매 코팅 광섬유의 IPA 분해 특성 연구 (A Study on the Degradation of Isopropyl Alcohol with $TiO_2-Coated$ Plastic Optic Fibers)

  • 본 연구에서는 광촉매 $TiO_2/P-25$를 POF에 코팅하여 IPA 분해 활성을 고찰한 결과, 코팅 시 용매의 조건은 에탄올에서 IPA의 분해효율이 가장 우수하였고 무기바인더(KR-400), 유기바인더(A-9540) 및 무$\cdot$유기 복합바인더(GPTMS, TMOS)중에서 유기 바인더인 A-9540을 사용했을 때 효율이 가장 우수한 것으로 나왔다. 유기 바인더는 광 분해반응에 의하여 바인더 자체가 분해되고 무기 바인더는 부착성이 떨어졌다. 유$\cdot$무기 복합 바인더 중에서 광분해 효율이 뛰어난 TMOS를 바인더로 선정하여 TMOS/P-25의 비율을 0.05부터 1로 바꾸어 광분해 실험을 수행한 결과, 바인더로써 TMOS의 첨가는 IPA분해 효율을 낮게 하였다.

기능화된 탄소나노튜브의 카르복실산이 전기방사된 폴리아크릴로니트릴 섬유의 물성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Carboxylic Acid Group of Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes on Properties of Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) Fibers)

  • 다중벽 탄소나노튜브(MWNT)의 표면이 산성기로 처리된 MWNT가 polyacrylonitrile(PAN) 섬유의 열적, 기계적 물성에 미치는 영향을 알아 보고자 질산, 황산으로 처리한 MWNT(O-MWNT)를 디아조늄염 반응을 이용하여 MWNT 표면에 이소프탈산(isophthalic acid)을 추가로 도입하였다. O-MWNT와 비교하여 볼 때 이소프탈산으로 처리된 MWNT(IPA-MWNT)가 극성용매 내에서 더 우수한 분산 안정성을 나타내었으며 이를 호모 PAN과 혼합하여 필름을 제조한 후 공기 중에서 열안정화 반응을 모사하였을 때 호모 PAN과 비교시 발열량이 감소하였다. PAN 공중합체와 IPA-MWNT를 혼합한 용액을 전도성 수조 콜렉터를 이용하여 전기방사를 한 결과 연속상의 배향된 섬유제조가 가능하였다. 1 wt%의 IPA-MWNT를 포함한 연속상의 전기방사된 PAN 섬유는 순수한 PAN 섬유와 비교하여 볼 때 인장강도가 100% 증가하였으며, 탄성률은 160% 증가되었다.

Effect of Ethanol/water Solvent Ratios on the Morphology of Zein Nanofiber Mats and their Wettability

  • Zein is a hydrophobic protein produced from maize and has great potential in a number of industrial applications, such as food, food coating and food packaging. To obtain suitable electrospinning conditions for thinner and uniform zein nanofiber mats, a series of experiments was conducted on various volume ratios (v/v) of ethanol/water solutions with different zein concentrations. The prepared zein nanofiber mats were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements. Uniform zein fibers with a average diameter in the nanometer scale (300~500 nm) could be prepared from 30 wt.% zein in 7/3 (v/v) ethanol/water solutions.

  • An organic-inorganic hybrid solar cell fibers with characteristics such as formability, low-cost and tailorability was developed by deposition of C60 and CuPc on fiber surface. In spite of some variation according to the temperature of ITO deposition, the maximum open circuit voltage of 0.39V was attained at $150^{\circ}C$(1000end). The resulting solar cell showed the performances Isc=0.482, Voc=0.320, FF=0.285 ${\eta}_{e}=0.044$% which are comparable to one of other types of solar cells in literature.

Self-assembly Coloration Approach on Cotton Fibers using Porphyrin

  • In this work, poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride) (PDDAC) and meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin were considered to produce the self-assembly fabrication films. This method is based on the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition produced by the electrostatic attraction between positively charged PDDAC and negatively charged porphyrin ions. The result of multilayer fabrication was discussed with the level of color strength (K/S). K/S spectra of the fabricated multilayer films showed gradual increase behaviors. In addition, the color photo images of the fabricated multilayer films showed that PDDAC and porphyrin were successfully attracted by electrostatic self-assembly forces.
