We herein report a new analytical application of XPS to the identification of organic molecules in room temperature ionic liquid for the first time. An organic compound, propargylamine (1), produced in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][$PF_6$]), which is one of the room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), via $A^3$ coupling reaction, is characterized by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) rather than using conventional organic compound analysis techniques. There are four non-equivalent carbons in RTILs and 1 each. The ratios of normalized integrated areas of the deconvoluted binding energy of core electron of carbon (C1s) peaks are well matched to the number of carbons in those compounds. The binding energies of C1s of the featured carbons in 1, C4 (sp carbons in acetylene group) and C5 ($sp^2$ carbons in benzene ring), are assigned 286.2 and 285.4 eV, respectively. These results will be able to provide an important tool and a new strategy for the analysis of organic molecules
Colored compounds adsorption from the textile dyeing effluents on activated carbons produced from various indigenous vegetable sources by zinc chloride activation is studied. The most important parameters in chemical activation were found to be the chemical ratio of $ZnCl_2$ to feed (3:1), carbonization temperature (460-470 $^{\circ}C$) and time of activation (75 min). The absorbance at 511 nm (red effluent) and 615 nm (blue effluent) are used for estimation of color. It is established that at optimum temperature ($50^{\circ}C$), time of contact (30-40 min) and adsorbent loading (2 g/L), activated carbons developed from rain tree (Samanea saman) saw dust and blackberry (Randia formosa) tree saw dust showed great capability to remove color materials from the effluents. It is observed that adsorption of reactive dyes by all types of activated carbons is more than that of disperse dyes. It is explained that because of its acidic nature the activated carbon can adsorb better reactive dye particles containing large number of nitrogen sites and $-SO_3Na$ group in their structure. The use of activated carbons from the indigenous biomass would be economical, because saw dusts are readily available waste worldwide.
Adsorption isotherms and kinetics for taste and odor (T&O) compounds and natural organic matters (NOMs) were performed to evaluate the impacts of activated carbon particle size on coagulation and adsorption. Adsorption capacities for iodine, T&O compounds, and NOM of all the activated carbons under #325 mesh were more excellent than those of virgin activated carbons. Small activated carbon particles were more rapidly adsorbed low molecular weight T&O compounds in the water, while those were slowly adsorbed high molecular weight NOM. When the activated carbon and alum were added simultaneously, the adsorption capacity for organics was better than alum was added alone.

Activated carbons (ACs) were treated by fluorination to improve the adsorption property of toluene gas among volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The pore characteristics and surface properties of these activated carbons were evaluated by BET and XPS and the adsorption property and removal efficiency of toluene gas was investigated by gas chromatography. The breakthrough time of fluorinated ACs was increased about 27% compared to that of untreated ACs when the toluene gas of 100 ppm was flowed at a flow rate of $300cm^3/min$. Fluorinated AC of 0.1 g adsorbent totally adsorbed toluene gas in 100 ppm to 100 % during the adsorption time in 19 h. These results can be used as a treatment technology or removal of carcinogenic materials such as toluene.
Fast-paced industrial and agricultural development generates large quantities of hazardous heavy metals (HMs), which are extremely damaging to individuals and the environment. Research in both academia and industry has been spurred by the need for HMs to be removed from water bodies. Advanced materials are being developed to replace existing water purification technologies or to introduce cutting-edge solutions that solve challenges such as cost efficacy, easy production, diverse metal removal, and regenerability. Water treatment industries are increasingly interested in activated carbon because of its high adsorption capacity for HMs adsorption. Furthermore, because of its huge surface area, abundant functional groups on surface, and optimal pore diameter, the modified activated carbon has the potential to be used as an efficient adsorbent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a novel organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials, sparked an interest in the elimination of HMs via adsorption. This is due to the their highly porous nature, large surface area, abundance of exposed adsorptive sites, and post-synthetic modification (PSM) ability. This review introduces PSM methods for MOFs, chemical modification of activated carbons (ACs), and current advancements in the elimination of Pb2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+ ions from water using modified MOFs and ACs via adsorption.

Activated carbons prepared by chemical activation of organic waste sludges with $ZnCl_2$ and $K_2S$ have been studied in terms of their pore development and adsorptivity. Pore development of the carbons prepared from organic waste sludges was characterized by the nitrogen adsorption at 77K. The $ZnCl_2$-activated carbon produced by chemical activation with zinc chloride exhibited type I isotherm characteristics according to the BDDT classification, suggesting the presence of micropores formed by activation process. The isotherms of the commercial powdered activated carbon and $K_2S$-activated carbon reveal a hysteresis similar to that of type IV in BDDT classification, indicating the formation of mesopores. This result implies that the major pores of $K_2S$-activated carbon are composed of meso and micropores, and a macropores are minor. The adsorptive capacities of metal on the $K_2S$-activated carbon prepared from organic waste sludges were found to be superior to those on a commercial granular activated carbon. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms yield a fairly good fit to the adsorption data, indicating a monolayer adsorption of metals onto $K_2S$-activated carbon. The adsorptive capacity of the $K_2S$-activated carbon was superior to $ZnCl_2$-activated carbon for $PO_4$-P, and vice versa for $NO_3$-N. From the results of the studies reported here, it can be concluded that activated carbons with adsorptivity superior to commercial granular activated carbons can be produced from organic waste sludge using a two-step carbonization/activation procedure with zinc chloride or potassium sulfide as the activating agents.
This paper was investigated to clarify the possibility of a biodegradation of materials adsorbed on different porous granular-activated carbons (GACs) such as coal-& coconut-based GAC. Total organic carbon, humic substance and ammonia were used to compare their removal efficiencies. The objective of this study is to determine the adsorption capacity of bioregenerated GAC. When raw water reacted with chloride, the yield of THMs increased as a function of the input amount of chloride. The formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) was investigated in water treated with chlorine when humic acid was used as THM precursor. As the input amount of chloride in raw water increased by two or five-fold to remove the $NH_3$, the chloroform of the THMs significantly increased also five or ten-fold. It was found that the chloroform was significantly removed by the treatment of biological activated carbon (BAG) in comparison with the ozone treatment, and the removal efficiency of THMs in coal-typed GAC was $10-30\%$ better than coconut-typed GAC due to the biological degradation on the surface of the activated carbons.
Activated carbons from rice-straw can be used as an adsorbents for the purification of water were prepared and evaluated. The adsorptive capacities of activated carbons were measured by iodine, potassium permangante, phenol and metals. It was observed by electron microscope (SEM) and IR spectrum that organic components in the rice-straw and its carbonization product were disappeared. Slit-shaped and porousstructures were formed by activation. There was no relationship between temperature and adsorption of iodine but adsorption of potassium permanganate increased as temperature rose. The adsorption of the phenol was greater than 99%. The adsorption data of phenol at $25^\circ{C}$ obeyed the Freundlich's isotherm. Various metals except sodium were not removed by activated carbon.
The characteristics of desorption reaction and the heating values of used activated carbons collected from the companies of Shiwha/Banwal industrial complex were investigated. The desorption characteristics of used activated carbons were analyzed based on the data obtained from a thermogravimetric analyzer. The activation energies and reaction orders for desorption reaction of used activated carbons were calculated by employing Freeman-Carroll method. Heating values of volatile organic compounds(VOC) desorbed from used activated carbons were estimated based on the data obtained from a total hydrocarbon analyzer. It was found that the reaction orders of desorption of used activated carbons were 0.1~0.8, their desorption activation energies, 6.9~26.4 kJ/mol, and VOC heating values, 0.4~10.7 kcal/kg.

Carbon electrode was applied to a wastewater treatment system as biofilm media. The spatial distribution of heterotrophic bacteria in aerobic wastewater biofilm grown on carbon electrode was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and biomass measurement. Five volts of electric oxidation and reduction potential were charged to the carbon anode and cathode of the bioelectrochemical system, respectively, but were not charged to electrodes of a conventional system. To correlate the biofilm architecture of bacterial populations with their activity, the bacterial treatment efficiency of organic carbons was measured in the bioelectrochemical system and compared with that in the conventional system. In the SEM image, the biofilm on the anodic medium of the bioelectrochemical system looked intact and active; however, that on the carbon medium of the conventional system appeared to be shrinking or damaging. In the AFM image, the thickness of biofilm formed on the carbon medium was about two times of those on the anodic medium. The bacterial treatment efficiency of organic carbons in the bioelectrochemical system was about 1.5 times higher than that in the conventional system. Some denitrifying bacteria can metabolically oxidize $H_{2}$, coupled to reduction of $NO_{3}^{-}\;to\;N_{2}$. $H_{2}$ was produced from the cathode in the bioelectrochemical system by electrolysis of water but was not so in the conventional system. The denitrification efficiency was less than $22\%$ in the conventional system and more than $77\%$ in the bioelectrochemical system. From these results, we found that the electrochemical coupling reactions between aerobic and anaerobic reactors may be a useful tool for improvement of wastewater treatment and denitrification efficiency, without special manipulations such as bacterial growth condition control, C/N ratio (the ratio of carbon to nitrogen) control, MLSS returning, or biofilm refreshing.
