The competitive relationship between orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) and ladino clover (Trifolium repens L.) was studied under aerial and soil partitions and N, P fertilizer combinations. Orchardgrass and ladino clover were grown in field with one of non competition, shoot competition only, root competition only, full competition and competition between same species. Under basal application of K fertilizer N and P were applied in treatment combinations of blank, N only (l5kg/10a), P only (l5kg/10a), and both NP at planting and each cutting. The forage yield in mixture was between yield of pure orchard grass stand and the 'expected yield', which was a mean of both pure stands. The forage yield in pure ladino was the lowest. During the experiment there was a progressive decline in clover yield either pure stand or mixture. Since orchardgrass was 'over-compensated' to low-yielding clover, the yield of mixture was more than non competition. Orchard grass was more competitive than ladino clover as seasons advanced. The aggressivity of orchardgrass was higher in root competition than in shoot competition comparing to clover. Nitrogen fertilizer increased orchardgrass yield, while phosphate did ladino clover yield and root weight of both species. But the additional effect of P to N was not significant in dry weight and LAI.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization levels after first harvest (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kglha) during spring season on the gms growth, dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive value, and efficiency of DM production per N kg applied in orchardgrass meadow. Additional N was applicated at early spring (70 kg), after second harvest (50 kg), and after fourth harvest (30 kg/ha) in all treatments, 1990. Growth and DM yield of orchardgrass at second harvest were significantly increased with increasing level of N after first harvest (P<0.05), but no yield differences were observed between application of N 60, N 90, and N 120 kg. The efficiency of DM increment per N kg applied was rapidly decreased with increasing level of N; that was 14.8, 12.0, 10.7 and 4.7 DM kg/N kgha in the plot of N 30, N 60, N 90 and N 120 kg, respectively. The content and yield of crude protein of orchardgrass at second harvest were significantly increased with increasing of N (P<0.05), ranged h r n 11.0% (N 0 kg) to 16.8% (N 120 kg), and from 195.0 kg (N 0 kg) to 508.2 kglha (N 120 kg), respectively. However, the content of neutral detergent fiber was not affected by N level after first harvest. From the above results, it is suggested that application of N fertilizer after first harvest was very effective for regrowth and nutritive value of orchardgrass during spring season, and the proper amount of N after first harvest was 60-90 kglha in this experiment.
An experiment was carried out to introduce OsHSP17.9, a low molecular HSP gene isolated from rice plant to orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) using Agrobacterium. Mature seed-derived calli of orchardgrass were co-cultured with Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA101 harboring the plasmid pIG-HSP17.9 for transformation. Calli selected by hygromycin were transferred to N$_{6}$ medium containing 1 mg/L NAA, 5 mg/L kinetin, 250 mg/L cefotaxime and 50 mg/L hygromycin and several hygromycin resistant plants were obtained. Stable incorporation of the introduced OsHSP17.9 to the genome of the hygromycin resistant plants was confirmed by PCR and Southern blot analysis. Transformation efficiency was variable between cultivars in which it was 16.5% in Potomac and 8.0% in Frontier. Constitutive expression of the transgene in the transformed orchardgrass tissues was identified by Northern blot analysis but transcript levels were different among individual plants.s.

Changes in dry matter yield, crude components, nutrients uptake($P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, MgO) and sulphur containing amino acid(cysteine, methionine) of orchardgrass(Dacty1is glomerata. L) and alfalfa(A4edicago sativa. L) by gypsum application(as sulphur source, 0, 2. 5, 10, 20kg SIlOa) were investigated to understand the effect of sulphur on herbage production in pasture, which was established in 1987 as means of hand broadcasting. The effect of gypsum on dry matter yield at different cutting times during growing seasons has not been found both in orchardgrass and in alfalfa, but in respect to annual total dry matter yield there were increment in herbage yield (P<0.05) of alfalfa at 5, 10, 20kg SIlOa in 1989 and the amounts of sulphur taken up in herbage slightly increased according to the rates of gypsum application. Maximum apparent recovery of sulphur was 7.55% at 2kg SIlOa in orchardgrass and was 17.8% at 5kg S/lOa in alfalfa. There were no any great differences in the content of crude components of both species and this trend was similar with the mineral contents of orchardgrass. But in alfalfa, the amounts of $K_2O$, CaO, and $P_2O_5$ taken up were increased by gypsum application and the increment in the amounts of minerals taken up in herbage at 20kg SIlOa were 14.9 of $K_2O$, 9.1 of CaO, and 2.5kgIlOa of $P_2O_5$ as compared to those of at untreated plot. Cysteine and methionine were not influenced by gypsum applicaton not only in orchardgrass but also cysteine in alfalfa, however, the content of methionine in alfalfa was slightly increased at 2, 5, lOkg SIlOa and at 20kg SIlOa was reverse.

This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of sowing method and summer management on the dry matter yield, dead matter, weed development and ground cover of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) meadow. The experiment was allocated as a split-split plot design with three replications. The main plots were sowing method of drilling and broadcasting, sub plots were drainage of experimental field, adequate and inadequate, and sub-sub plots were cutting timeof orchardgrass, cutting before rainy season started and cutting after rainy season ended. The experiment was undertaken over a period of 14 months from September, 1983 to October, 1984. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There were no significant differences in dry matter yield among treatments at the first cutting, but cutting before rainy season produced significantly more forage yield ($P{\le}0.01$) than cutting after rainy season at the second and third cuts. At the third cutting, drilled orchardgrass meadow showed a significant dry matter yield ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, 2. The dead matter of orchardgrass was accumulated only at the second cutting when orchardgrass meadow cut after rainy season. Orchardgrass produced in the adequate and inadequate drainage plots consisted 20.4 and 35.9% of dead material, respectively, but no significant difference was found between two drainage treatments. 3. Drilled orchardgrass meadow produced significantly less weeds ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, but the plots cut after rainy season produced significantly more weeds ($P{\le}0.01$) than the plots cut before rainy season. 4. The percent ground cover of orchardgrass in the plots cut before rainy season was significantly higher ($P{\le}0.01$) than that in the plots cut after rainy season at the second cutting. Drilled plots showed a slight increase in the ground cover than the broadcast, but the difference was not significant. The same trend of ground cover of the meadow estimated at the second cutting was sustained after the third cutting. 5. Based on the results of the experiment, it indicates that the second cut of orchardgrass should be made before rainy season related for maintaining high yield of the meadow. Drilling as a sowing method of orchardgrass meadow could be adopted in the view point of reducing weed development.

The object of this experiment was to investigate the effect of mixture which consist of different seeding rates and species on dry matter yield and quality in Daejon area. The field trials were conducted from 2003 to 2005 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality of different mixture. The experimental design includes three mixture types: Conventional mixtures, CM{orchardgrass(Potomac) 50% + tall fescue (Fawn)20% + Kentucky bluegrass(Kenblue) 20% + white clover(Regal) 10%}, red clover + mixtures, RM{orchardgrass(Potomac) 40% + tall fescue(Fawn) 20% + Kentucky bluegrass(Kenblue) 10% + red clover(Kenland) 30%) and Turf type grass + mixtures, TM {orchardgrass (Potomac) 50% + turf type grass (tall fescue, Millennium 20% + Kentucky bluegrass, Midnight 10% + perennial ryegrass, Palmer III 10%) + white clover(Regal) 10%}. The average DM yield for 2 years of red clover+mixture(11,656kg/ha) was higher than those of the other mixtures(p<0.05). The content of crude protein and dry manu digestibility were higher in red clover+mixture than in other mixtures(p<0.05). but, the content of fibrous compounds like as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin were lower in red clover+mixture than in other mixtures(p<0.05). The crude protein dry matter(CPDM) yield was higher in red clover + mixture(2,832kg/ha) than in conventional mixture(2,372kg/ha) and turf type + mixture(2,266kg/ha)(p<0.05). The digestible dry matter (DDM) yield was higher in red clover + mixture(8,881 kg/ha) than in conventional mixture(8,255kg/ha) and turf type + mixture(7,314kg/ha)(p<0.05). In botanical composition at last cutting time in 2005, conventional mixture were maintained orchardgrass 45%, tall fescue 22%, Kentucky bluegrass 5% and white clover 24%. Red clover + mixture were maintained orchardgrass 40%, tall fescue 22%, Kentucky bluegrass 4% and red clover 31%. turf type + mixture were orchardgrass 37%, tall fescue 23%, Kentucky bluegrass 6%, perennial ryegrass 8% and white clover 24%, respectively. As summary, DM yields and quality of mixture species and seeding rates were observed significant difference. The results of this experiment indicated that red clover + mixture was more effective in enhancing the DM yield and forage quality in Daejon area.

This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of mixture ratios of worm cast and soil on the growth orchardgrass seedlings, and estimate the adequate mixture ratio of worm cast for plant growth media. Mixture ratios of worm cast and soil were 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100, respectively. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The value of dry weight of shoot(SW), dry weight of root(RW), number of tillers per plant(NT) and biological yield(BY) were the highest in the mixture with 60% of worm cast. Particularly, the dry weight distribution to root in 20%-60% mixture ratios of worm cast were higher than those grown in 80%-100% mixture ratios of worm cast, it may due to the enhancement of root growth by adquate worm cast mix. 2. The orchardgrass seedlings in the 60% mixture ratio of worm cast grown in favourable soil conditions compared to those grown in other mixtrure ratios of worm cast and soil without worm cast. The soil analysis data showed that 60% mixture ratio of worm cast contained pH 6.16, 13.84% of organic matter, 0.84% of total nitrogen, 1,413.9ppm of available phosphorus and 16.7me/100g of cation exchange capacity, respectively. 3. Biological yield(BY) indicated positive significant correlation with the dry weights of shoot(SW) and root(RW). And, the dry weight of shoot(SW) had positive correlation with the number of tiller per plant(NT) and dry weight of tiller(WT).

The evaluation of structural carbohydrate losses and its effect on silages digestibility in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) was studied during 5, 21 and 56 days ensiling. About 70 and 60 kg fresh matter of the two forages were ensiled in 9 silos of 120 L capacity. The digestion trials were conducted in two phases using the two grasses in two $4{\times}4$ Latin square design according to the four treatments being the grass and the three silages. There were no differences in the DM and CP contents resulting from 5 to 56 days ensiling in both forages. The water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), hemicelllose, pectin, and energy were slightly reduced and appeared lower in 56 days silage. The ether extract and cellulose contents slightly increased as the ensiling process advanced in the two species. Hemicellulose losses of 29 and 41 g/kg DM were obtained in alfalfa and orchardgrass, respectively, 56 days after ensiling. While the cellulose losses in both species were very little, compared to that for hemicellulose, the pectin losses, 56 days after ensiling were 15 and 12 g/kg DM in alfalfa and orchardgras respectively. The total structural carbohydrates lost (ie., hemicellulose + cellulose + pectin) in g/kg DM of fresh material forage ensiled, is about four fifths the amount lost by WSC, in alfalfa and about two thirds, in orchardgrass, by 21 days ensiling after the activity of microorganism terminated, indicating that appreciable amount was used as substrate for silage fermentation. Ensiling alfalfa and orchardgrass for 0, 5, 21 and 56 days maintained a decreasing trend of 83.8, 82.5, 79.3 and 78.9% digestibility in alfalfa and 80.5, 77.0, 77.1 and 76.4% digestibility in orchardgrass. While the digestibility of cellulose and ether extract increased in silage in both species, the digestible energy values in silage were reduced from 2.6 to 2.3 and 2.9 to 2.7 Mcal/kg DM respectively in alfalfa and orchard during 5-56 days ensiling.
This study determined the influence of moisture, ensiling time and their interactions on the losses of hemicellulose and cellulose during ensiling of orchardgrass. Orchardgrass containing 80 (HM), 70 (MM) and 55% (LM) moisture was ensiled in 3 laboratory silos of 500 ml capacity for 3, 7, 21 and 91 days. The dry matter (DM), water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), hemicellulose and cellulose contents of the ensiled orchardgrass was lowered than that of the untreated grass regardless of moisture content. Ensiling orchardgrass for 91 days (d) decreased (p<0.01) hemicellulose contents from 19 to 15%, 20 to 15% and 18 to 12% and cellulose from 31 to 29%, 29 to 26% and 27 to 26% for LM, MM and HM silage, respectively. Results from fermentation of LM and MM silages were within acceptable guidelines except for butyric acid and ammonia after 3 weeks of ensiling of MM which appeared to be lower than ideal. The results of the fermentation of HM silages were poor showing higher concentration of acetic, propionic and butyric acids and traces of isovaleric, valeric and caproic acids with ammonia at all stage of time. While the DM losses from LM and MM silages over the ensiling period were acceptable, that for HM silage increased to 13% after 91 d ensiling, confirming a poor fermentation process occurred. The greatest WSC losses occurred within 7 d of ensiling and the lowest losses occurred after 3 weeks of ensiling. Except in HM silage, the hemicellulose and cellulose losses were highest (p<0.01) in the first 3 weeks of ensiling. Hemicellulose losses were between 19 and 22% and 4.2 and 5.9% up to 3 weeks and after 3 weeks of ensiling LM and MM silages, respectively. Cellulose losses were small. In contrast, hemicellulose losses after 3 weeks of ensiling of HM silage was about 50% higher than over the first 3 weeks possibly due to clostridial type fermentation. The results showed that increasing ensiling time of high moisture orchardgrass would result in the excessive losses of DM, WSC, hemicellulose and cellulose in the silage.
