The soil physical quality is a core factor in achieving two of sustainable agriculture's goals: productivity and environment. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in soil physical properties for nearly a decade through periodic monitoring of three cultivation types: upland, orchard, and paddy. Field surveys and lab analysis were conducted to determine the soils physical properties after every 4 years; upland (2009, 2013, and 2017), orchard (2010 and 2014), and paddy (2011 and 2015). In each year soil samples from 162-338 sites were collected. The bulk density of upland subsoil decreased from $1.53Mg\;m^{-3}$ to $1.50Mg\;m^{-3}$ while the plowing depth and subsoil organic matter increased from 13.7 cm to 19.5 cm and from $12.6g\;kg^{-1}$ to $18.3g\;kg^{-1}$ respectively during the period 2009-2017. Plowing depth for orchard increased from 16.7 cm to 18.9 cm. However, organic matter content decreased from $15.9g\;kg^{-1}$ to $15.4g\;kg^{-1}$ during the 2010-2014 period. For paddy, plowing depth and subsoil organic matter decreased from 17.5 cm to 16.7 cm and from $17.5g\;kg^{-1}$ to $15.8g\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. The subsoil bulk density increased from $1.47Mg\;m^{-3}$ to $1.52Mg\;m^{-3}$ from 2011-2015. Excess ratio for soil physical standards increased from 16% to 22% in orchard, 56% to 62% in paddy, and decreased from 41% to 29% in upland. The overall soil physical quality had been ameliorated for upland, but degraded for paddy. Improved tillage practices and application of appropriate organic matter is necessary to enhance the quality of soils, especially in the paddy field.
Landscape composition and structure are important factors determining biological diversity including pests and natural enemires in agricultural ecosystem. This study was conducted to indentify effect of landscape composition on occurrence of lepidopteran pest population in Geochang, Gyoungdnam. For this, orchard characteristics and management practices were surveyed in 80 conventional apple orchards in Geochang, Korea, along with the monitoring of pest population densities. The landscape features of each surveyed orchard also obtained by extracting information from the public-service map. Grapholita molesta was the most dominat and damaging pest followed by Phyllonorycter ringoniella and Carposina sasakii in trap catches. Adoxophyes paraorana occurrences were low. Farmers spray insecticides and fungicides ap. 12.4 times per year respectively while acaricides were sprayed 2.4 times. Major landscape features such as surrounding apple orchard or paddy field did not influence the pest populations but presence of plum, peach, wild peach, graph, and even abandoned orchards significantly resulted in higher pest population mostly on G. molesta. C. sasakii population was higher in orchards with grape, peach, and P. ringoniella with peach, grape, abandoned orchards and jujube. Results highlight the need of landscape management not only for the rural amenity but also for increasing functional diversity of agroecosystem as well as reducing pest population.
GA4/7 spray, injection and several cultural treatments were applied to the greenhouse-grown potted hybrid larch(Larix decidua${\times}$leptolepis) grafts and field-grown European larch seedlings to induce early flowering. A treatment consisting of repeat-ed GA4/7 sprays, alone, was the most effective flower induction treatment for greenhouse-grown, potted larch grafts. Root pruning as a adjunct treatment did not show synergistic effects. Injection for potted grafts with GA4/7 was not useful approach in this study and it resulted in increased mortality. In the field experiment with 10-Year-old larch seedlings, repeated GA4/7 sprays in combination with root pruning or with plastic mulching appears to be useful and practical means for inducing larch flowers:
Clonal differences in fertility (expressed as the number of female and male strobili) were determined for five consecutive years (2002-2006) in a clonal seed orchard of Chamaecyparis obtusa. Fertility varied among clones and among years with producing five-year averages of 378.8 and 871.2 for female and male strobili per ramet, respectively. Correlation between female and male strobilus production was positive over the five years and statistically significant. Based on the observed fertility variation, the effective population sizes (estimated by status numbers, $N_e$) were calculated and varied from 24.3 to 47.9 (48.6% to 95.8% of census number, N) among the five studied years. On average (pooled), the relative effective population size was 82% of the N. Variation in female fertility was higher than that in male fertility, and this variation was reflected on female and male parents' status numbers. Pooled $N_e$ estimated from the five years was higher than that from poor seed production years. From our results, it was concluded that genetic diversity collected from good flowering years would be higher than that from poor flowering years.
Seed production and germination could be influenced by some factors. The picking time and climate factors are regarded as the elements to obtain sound seeds. We have observed the seed productivity and germination of seeds from trees of Chamaecyparis obtusa selected in a clonal seed orchard. Depending on picking time, various shapes from liquid material, something jellied to the fully matured one were observed. Germination aspects varied throughout the test days. After 20days of seeding in a glass petri-dish, germinal apparatuses appeared from the all seeds which had been picked from after at the end of August. The highest germination rate of about 30% was observed from the seeds picked from $20^{th}$ of September and $10^{th}$ of October. Seed production was about two times higher in 2005 than in 2006 and the average germination rate was also higher in 2005. We have also analyzed the effects of climatic factors about two consecutive years on seed productivity. Among the climatic factors, monthly sum of temperature and of precipitation were the main factors for maturation of Chamaecyparis obtusa seeds.

Background: This study was aim to observe the effects of feeding mixed local hay (MH) consisted of 55% orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L.), 35% tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and 10% red clover (Trifolium pratense) to Hanwoo steers on performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality (longissimus thoracis) compared with feeding imported timothy hay (TH) and local rice straw (RS). Results: Although no significant effects were found on animal performance and carcass yield grade, the carcasses of MH group had higher marbling score and quality grade than those of RS and TH group (P < 0.05). Therefore, higher fat content (P < 0.001), lower shear force and hardness value in the beef of MH group than that of other groups were observed. Furthermore, the beef of MH group had higher CIE $a^*$ value (redness) than that of other groups and feeding MH to Hanwoo steers lowered n-6 to n-3 fatty acids ratio in beef. Conclusions: Mixed hay provided benefits on meat quality and could be used for Hanwoo fattening program.
The purpose of this study was to develop an optimal path planning program for autonomous speed sprayer in orchard. A digital map which contained coordinate information and entity information including height, width, radius of main stem, and disease of a trees was developed to build an optimal path. The digital map, dynamic programming and order-picking algorithm were used for planning an optimal path for autonomous speed sprayers. When this algorithm applied to rectangular-shaped orchards to travel whole trees, the developed program planned the same working path and same traveling distance as those of created by conventional method. But for irregular-shaped orchards, developed program planned differently and 5.06% shorter path than conventional method. When applied to create path for multi-selected trees, irregular-shaped orchards showed 13.9% shorter path and also rectangular-shaped orchards showed 9.1% shorter path. The developed program always planned shorter path than the path created by conventional method despite of variation of shape of orchards.
