  • Citrus scab symptoms were observed on leaves of trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) in open field of Citrus Research Institute, National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science. Typical scab pustules were formed and they were elevated protuberances form and light brown to grey. The pathogens were isolated from the symptomatic leaves and then were identified to Elsinoë fawcettii by morphological characteristics, pathogenicity and PCR assay. The morphological characteristics of colonies formed very slow-growing, pulvinate, or raised and deeply fissured, gummy to mucoid or tomentose colonies on potato dextrose agar medium. The pathogens were pathogenic to leaves of Satsuma mandarin, lemon, sour orange and grapefruit with typical scab symptoms. In PCR assay, specific amplified of products of 717 bp with Efaw-1 and 384 bp with Efaw-2 were observed from trifoliate isolates and E. fawcettii as reference but not from E. australis. This is first report of trifoliate orange being positive for citrus scab disease.

  • The equilibrium sorption of Orange II by silk fibroin in the range of 50$^{\circ}$, 70$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}C$ and to pH 1.5, 2.2, and 4.0 have been discussed in the light of the dual sorption. Langmuir sorption constant K$\_$L/ and partition coefficient K$\_$P/ were decreased with the increase of the temperature and the pH for the dyeing of silk fibroin with Orange II. Positive values for adsorption entropy were observed. It was found that the values of $\Delta$H$^{\circ}$ is negative for dyeing conditions, and the dyestuff/fibre reaction is therefore exothermic.refore exothermic.

  • This study was undertaken in order to elucidate the elimination of fenitrothion residues during the dietary fiber and bioflavonoid preparations from mandarin orange peels. Dietary fibers were prepared from contaminated mandarin orange peels through homogenization, enzyme treatment, ethanol precipitation, acetone washing and air drying, at the yields of 17.4% total dietary fiber, 13.1% insoluble dietary fiber and 1.7% soluble dietary fiber. The removal rate of fenitrothion residues at 13 and 0.5 ppm levels in orange peels was 98.4% and 91.9% in total dietary fiber, 99.7% and 97.1% in insoluble dietary fiber, 100% and 99.6% in soluble dietary fiber, respectively. When bioflavonoid was prepared from contaminated mandarin orange peels through homogenization, soaking, ethanol precipitation, hexane and butanol extractions, the removal rate of fenitrothion residues was 92.7% in intermediate extract and 100% in final extract.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the levels of serum 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and evaluate their association with age, body mass index, smoking, military record-based variables, and estimated exposure to Agent Orange in Korean Vietnam veterans. Methods: Serum levels of TCDD were analyzed in 102 Vietnam veterans. Information on age, body mass index, and smoking status were obtained from a self-reported questionnaire. The perceived exposure was assessed by a 6-item questionnaire. Two proximitybased exposures were constructed by division/brigade level and battalion/company level unit information using the Stellman exposure opportunity index model. Results: The mean and median of serum TCDD levels was 1.2 parts per trillion (ppt) and 0.9 ppt, respectively. Only 2 Vietnam veterans had elevated levels of TCDD (>10 ppt). The levels of TCDD did not tend to increase with the likelihood of exposure to Agent Orange, as estimated from either proximity-based exposure or perceived self-reported exposure. The serum TCDD levels were not significantly different according to military unit, year of first deployment, duration of deployment, military rank, age, body mass index, and smoking status. Conclusions: The average serum TCDD levels in the Korean Vietnam veterans were lower than those reported for other occupationally or environmentally exposed groups and US Vietnam veterans, and their use as an objective marker of Agent Orange exposure may have some limitations. The unit of deployment, duration of deployment, year of first deployment, military rank, perceived self-reported exposure, and proximity-based exposure to Agent Orange were not associated with TCDD levels in Korean Vietnam veterans. Age, body mass index and smoking also were not associated with TCDD levels.

  • The effects of filling amount and temperature of orage juices on the release of tin from can were investigated according to storage period and temperature. For the experiment, the orange juice in can with the full weight of 200g were filled respectively with 170g, 180g, 190g, respectively, changing filling temperature to 8$0^{\circ}C$, 88$^{\circ}C$, 93$^{\circ}C$. In the case of 170g orange juice content all samples with the filling temperature at 8$0^{\circ}C$, 88$^{\circ}C$, 93$^{\circ}C$ and the storage temperature at 4$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$, 4$0^{\circ}C$ surpassed 150ppm(the permitted limit of tin) of released tin content after 30 days in ascending order. In the case of 180g orange juice content, all samples except the one with the filling temperature at 93$^{\circ}C$ and storage temperature at 4$^{\circ}C$, which took 90 days to surpass the limit, surpassed 150ppm of released tin content after 30days. In the case of 190g orange juice content, the samples with the filling temperature of 88$^{\circ}C$ and 93$^{\circ}C$ and with the storage temperature at 4$0^{\circ}C$ took 60 days to reached to the limit, while the samples with the storage temperature at 4$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ contained within the 150ppm limit for 240 days. The vacuum of can increased as the filling temperature was increased, and the sample with higher filling amount and temperature at the lower storage temperature decreased the release of tin.

  • Red-orange phosphors $Gd_{1-x}PO_4:{Eu_x}^{3+}$ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) were synthesized with changing the concentration of $Eu^{3+}$ ions using a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structures, surface morphology, and optical properties of the ceramic phosphors were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectrophotometry. The XRD results were in accordance with JCPDS (32-0386), and the crystal structures of all the red-orange phosphors were found to be a monoclinic system. The SEM results showed that the size of grains increases and then decreases as the concentration of $Eu^{3+}$ ionincreases. As for the PL properties, all of the ceramic phosphors, irrespective of $Eu^{3+}$ ion concentration, had orange and red emissions peaks at 594 nm and 613 nm, respectively. The maximum excitation and emission spectra were observed at 0.10 mol of $Eu^{3+}$ ion concentration, just like the grain size. An orange color stronger than the red means that $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_1$ (magnetic dipole transition) is dominant over the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$ (electric dipole transition), and $Eu^{3+}$ is located at the center of the inversion symmetry. These properties contrasted with those of a red phosphor $Y_{1-x}PO_4:{Eu_x}^{3+}$, which has a tetragonal system. Therefore, we confirm that the crystal structure of the host material has a major effect on the resulting color.
