I participated in Academic Exchange Program(Action plan II) between KADH(Korean Association for Disability and Oral Health) and JSDH(Japanses Society for Disability and Oral Health) for 2 months from 3rd July 2012 to 2nd september 2012 in the Department of Hygiene and Oral Health, School of Dentistry, Showa University at Tokyo, Japan. I have observed their operation process and learned what dysphagia is and how it is consulted and taken care of as a therapy for patients with eating and swallowing disorders for two months in The department of special needs dentistry at Showa University Dental Hospital, Jonan Branch of Tokyo Metropolitan Kita Medical Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled, Smile Nakano Center, Tokyo metropolitan center for persons with disabilities in Lidabashi for one week, Eating and swallowing functional therapy workshop for disabled children, Tokyo metropolitan Tobu medical center for Persons with Developmental/Multiple Disabilities located in Minamisunamitchi for one week and on The 17-18th JSDR(Japanese Society of Dysphagia rehabilitation) in Sapporo. Through Action Plan II program, I learned how precious eating, drinking and swallowing with ease are and observed how they do and what they do as a dentist or a dental hygienist in Japan for dysphagia patients. Therefore, I want to present the dental approaches of children with dysphagia in Japan, based on my experience for two months.

Methods : The subjects were 74 recruited from 126 dental hygienists in 14 public dental clinics in Jeonbuk Province. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 64 dental hygienists in charge of dental health care. Data were anlatzed by the statistical package SPSS WIN 12.0. Results : The characteristics of the subjects had no impact on their positive multicultural awareness, and there existed differences by age, rank and period of services in the channel of information acquisition. They got 3.5 out of five in multicultural awareness showing a positive way. The types of medical services for multicultural family revealed that they provided oral health education, dental checkup services and simple treatment covered by health insurance. Health insurance accounted for 15.4 percent of dental services. The obstacles to dental services in multicultural family were communication problems, poor concern for oral health and cultural gaps. They got 3.86 out of five points in educational needs for multicultural family who need the dental education most. The multicultural family showed the higher score in every question. Conclusions : Public health center dental clinics should help dental hygienists to acquire information on multicultural family. Public health center should provide the easy access way of dental health checkup for the multicultural family.
The aim of this study was to investigate the caries management by risk assessment (CAMBRA) development process and the latest updated caries risk assessment for the domestic settlement of the CAMBRA program and the activation of dental clinics. A system for CAMBRA was published in California Dental Association (CDA) in 2007. To investigate whether CAMBRA can be successfully implemented outside a university setting, a practice-based research network (PBRN) was created in the San Francisco Bay Area. Based on the CAMBRA-PRAN clinical studies, the caries risk assessment (CRA) tool was updated for patients aged 6 through adults in 2019. The CAMBRA system is expected to be widely and actively used in the dental field in Korea to contribute to oral health care.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of expertise and awareness of information on toothpaste in dental hygienists and to give patients information on toothpaste. Methods : The subjects was 205 dental hygienists working at dental clinic, dental hospital or college dental hospital in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. They filled out the questionaire from 13th to 27th April, 2013. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 program and significant level was set at p=0.05. Results : The awareness of information on toothpaste was the highest in dental hygienists having under 3 years career and working at dental clinics(p<0.001). The level of expertise on toothpaste was the highest in those having over 5 years career and working at general hospital or college dental hospital(p<0.001). In association with the effect of toothpaste(p<0.05), experienced dental hygienists had a higher knowledge(1.68 point) that those who had no experience(2.27 point). Instruction of the oral care devices included 27.5% of dental floss, 27.1% of toothbrush and 25.4% of proxabrush, and 4.9% of toothpaste. Conclusions : The results revealed that the right choice of the toothpaste would be the best prevention of dental caries and it is necessary to educate the dental hygienists for the toothpaste information.
Background: To analyze the effect of self-regulation on the fear of dental treatment in order to use it as basic data for efficient oral health care among male adolescents. Methods: A survey was administered to 241 first graders of specialized high schools in Daegu using a self-entry method. Twenty questions about fear of dental treatment and fifteen questions about self-regulation were included. The higher the score, the higher the fear of dental treatment and the self-regulation ability, showing a high reliability of 0.972 and 0.750, respectively. Results: The mean score of the participants' self-regulation ability was 3.25±0.51 and that of the degree of fear for dental treatment was relatively low at 1.72±0.85. It was confirmed that the higher the academic performance (F=7.635, p<0.01), the better was the self-regulation based on self-diagnosis (F=3.142, p<0.05), and was associated with higher health awareness (F=5.894, p<0.01). The degree of fear for dental treatment was significantly higher in the self-diagnosis-induced poor health group (F=4.933, p<0.01) and associated with a lower awareness of health (F=3.093, p<0.05). The participants' self-regulation ability was significantly negatively correlated with the degree of fear regarding dental treatment (r=-0.269, p<0.01). Regression analysis was performed using the degree of fear as a dependent variable and including sub-area variables of self-diagnosis-based health status, perception of health, and self-regulation ability as independent variables (β=-0.163, p<0.05). Among the self-regulation abilities, controlled composition (β=-0.232, p<0.01) had a significant effect; the higher the composition, the lower the degree of fear. The total explanatory power of this variable was 8.5%. Conclusion: An appropriate customized education program that can encourage individuals to practice self-care and maintain oral hygiene along with a clear understanding of underlying individual oral health conditions during adolescence is essential for promoting oral health.
The aim of this study was to examine the factors that affect the oral health knowledge, oral health performance and oral health quality of life of caner patients. A self-reported questionnaire was surveyed by 102 cancer patients in G area. The data were analyzed for frequency analysis, average, standard deviation, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient by using SPSS 21.0 program. The oral health knowledge were higher significantly having religion and in case of college graduation or higher monthly income(p<0.01). The oral health performance were higher significantly when married, higher monthly income. Multiple regression analysis showed significant differences in oral health knowledge and religion(p<0.05).
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between periodontitis and health behavior in women aged ≥40 years. In addition, related factors were compared according to the presence or absence of cardiovascular disease. Methods: Data from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018) were used. The study included 3,801 women aged 40-79 years, who participated in a questionnaire health survey related to hypertension, stroke, myocardial infarction, and angina pectoris, as well as completed blood tests, anthropometry, and oral examination. Statistical analyses were performed using complex sample general linear, complex sample crosstabs, and complex sample logistic regression analyses. Results: In all subjects, smoking and drinking, use of interdental care products, and dental checkups were confirmed to be significantly related to periodontitis. In the group with cardiovascular disease, the use of interdental care products, experience in dental checkups, and toothbrushing more than three times a day were confirmed as significant factors for lowering the prevalence of periodontitis. In the group without cardiovascular disease, smoking and drinking, use of interdental care products, and experience in dental checkups were confirmed as the significant factors. Conclusions: To improve the periodontal health of women over 40 years of age with cardiovascular disease, a health education program including self-care methods for proper dental plaque management and regular dental checkups are critical. Additionally, awareness of the risks of smoking and drinking would be helpful even for women without cardiovascular diseases.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of oral health status on daily life of elderly women. The subjects of this study were 142 elderly women aged 60 years or older who were surveyed through questionnaires, interviews, counseling, and oral examinations. The SPSS program was used for frequency analysis, descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results of the study showed that the number affected on daily life were 1.4 in average and the oral health condition was the highest at scaling (59.4%). When the oral status was unsatisfactory, it was found to be uncomfortable in daily life. In case of oral pain, oral status and poor removal of calculus, the number and frequency in daily life were increased. In conclusion, the oral health of elderly women can improve their daily life ability and affect the quality of life. Therefore, a systematic oral care plan is needed through the expansion of oral health promotion education for elderly women and the development of continuous preventive programs.
