This study investigates the effects of mental health and daily oral habits on temporomandibular joint symptoms. The study was conducted from September 1 to 30, 2019, enrolling a total of 402 young adults. We determined that mental health levels of anxiety, depression, and social maladjustment are significantly different, depending on life satisfaction (p<0.001), subjective health status (p<0.001), and trauma (p<0.01). Treating jaw joints exerted a significant difference in social maladjustment (p<0.05). Temporomandibular joint symptoms are significantly higher among women (p<0.05), drinkers (p<0.01), trauma (p<0.01) and jaw joint treatment patients (p<0.001). Mental health levels (p<0.001), oral habits (p<0.001), and temporomandibular joint symptoms (p<0.001) are all positively correlated. In addition, oral hygiene has the greatest influence on temporomandibular joint symptoms of trauma. Furthermore, factors experienced during treatment of the jaw joints also affect the temporomandibular joint symptoms. We conclude that it is imperative to improve oral health and malpractice in treating jaw joint disorders, and also develop a program that effectively improves jaw joint health, by combining mental health counseling and daily lifestyle improvements.
Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor of systemic health and also impairs oral health, which is related to development of oral cancers, periodontitis, delayed wound healing, tooth loss, failure of implant, etc. Aside from smoking, many other risk factors can be related to oral health and long-term effects of smoking on salivary flow and taste threshold are still in controversy. Authors considered dental students to be an appropriate group with good oral hygiene for a long-term study to reveal effects of smoking on oral health. This study was performed to compare smoking patterns and current oral health conditions between smokers and nonsmokers in dental students prior to long-term evaluation. 192 volunteers (85.7%) of 224 male dental students in Dankook University were evaluated through questionnaires and clinical examination in 2010. Questionnaires included smoking pattern, alcohol use, nicotine dependence, preventive care, psychological profile and clinical examinations comprised assessment of teeth or periodontal status, nicotine pigmentation, salivary flow, electrical taste thresholds and halitosis. From the study, (current) smokers were older, and drank more frequently with more alcohol intake compared to former smokers and nonsmokers(p<0.05). There was no significant difference among them in salivary flow rate, halitosis and electrical taste threshold. However, there was significant difference in DMFT rate, periodontal treatment need, nicotinic pigmentation between smokers and nonsmokers(p<0.05), irrespective of their levels of preventive care. The smokers in this study, who are young dental students with relatively shorter duration of smoking, less use of cigarettes and low level of nicotine dependence, did not reveal significant impairment of oral health. However, their oral health was found to be relatively impaired compared to nonsmokers', which suggests negative effect of smoking on the oral health and a need of smoking cessation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between sleep disturbances and personality type. Methods: Five hundred twenty-four college students in Gyeonggi-do completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and a questionnaire and collected data were analyzed by SAS 9.4 program. Results: Extroversion (E) type, sensation (S) type, and perceiving (P) type had significantly higher prevalence of insomnia than introversion (I) type (p<0.05), intuition (N) type (p<0.05), and judging (J) type (p<0.001), respectively. Tooth grinding, snoring and insomnia appeared to occur more frequently in feeling (F) type than in thinking (T) type. Tooth clenching, tooth grinding and snoring seemed to occur more frequently in S type than in N type. Insomnia occurred significantly the most frequently in sensation-feeling (SF) type (p<0.05). Tooth grinding and snoring seemed to occur the most frequently in SF type. A significantly increased percentage of sensation-perceiving (SP) type demonstrated insomnia (p<0.001). Tooth clenching, tooth grinding and snoring seemed to occur the most frequently in sensation-judging (SJ) type. Sensitive or nervous type of personality had significantly higher prevalence of insomnia than relaxed or general type of personality (p<0.01). A significantly increased percentage of subjects with bad general health status showed insomnia (p<0.0001). Tooth clenching and snoring seemed to occur the most frequently in subjects with bad general health status. A significantly decreased percentage of normal weight subjects demonstrated tooth grinding (p<0.05). Snoring occurred significantly the most frequently in overweight subjects (p<0.001). Tooth clenching showed significant correlation with stress (p<0.01) and personality (p<0.05). Snoring showed significant correlation with stress (p<0.05) and body weight (p<0.001). Insomnia showed significant correlation with stress (p<0.0001), personality (p<0.01), and general health status (p<0.0001). Conclusions: Sleep disturbances including tooth clenching and insomnia were associated with personality type and it is desirable to manage them considering personality type.
Objectives : The study enquires into OHB and its importance of preschooler mothers, based on perceived experiences of OHE. It also investigates mothers' sense of responsibility for children's oral health. The purpose is to enhance the effectiveness of OHE and its orientation. Methods : From April 20th to June 15th, 2011, 14 nurseries or preschools were randomly selected from childcare facilities of one gu(borough) in Busan. The objects of study are mothers of four to seven-year-old children. The collected survey data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 for Windows. Results : 1. There is a statistically significant difference(p<0.01) in relations between the mothers' working status and perceived experiences on OHE. 2. On the survey about OHB practices, there are significant differences(p<0.001) in toothbrushing before breakfast, after meals, in three minutes and after refreshments Significant differences(p<0.01) are also shown in toothbrushing after eating fruits. 3. On the survey about the importance of OHB, there are statistical significances(p<0.001) in toothbrushing manner-rather than the number of it-toothbrushing in three minutes after meals and following the correct way of toothbrushing. There are also significant differences(p<0.05) in brushing teeth for more than three minutes. 4. There are significant differences(p<0.001) in mothers' periodic dental examination, children's periodic dental examination and training experience on children's toothbrushing. 5. On the survey about the sense of responsibility for children's OHE based on experiences of OHE, there is a significant difference(p<0.05) in that many replied OHEis "much-needed" regardless of their experiences on it. Conclusions : The results show that of infants' mothers, those with experience on OHE, have an accurate knowledge about toothbrushing, due to the effectiveness of the education. Both groups, however, replied that children's OHE is much needed, suggesting problems about the accessibility of the OHE.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of parents knowledge on oral health status toward their children. This study was carried out to investigate and analyze the cognitive degree of dental subjects and general public who have an experience to be treated for their dental knowledge, operative dentistry, and dental prothesis in the oral health care through the questionnaires. The results are as follows : 1 : In questioning the frequency in the visitation of dental clinic, 68.8% usually go to see dentists, if children's teeth have trouble. It was the reason that economical standard and educational level were enhanced as before. 57.6% took a kind of medical measures. 2 : In surveying the preference of dentists’ age or gender, 56.9% preferred younger dentists to older or female dentists. On the contrary, 56.9% children want younger dentists, and 64.8% children want female dentist doctor. As a conclusion, the preference of dentists’ age or gender is relevant with a view to remove big horror, which can be evoked by dental measures. 3 : In questioning the possession amount of decayed teeth, 45.8% have more than four. Usually those parents who have children filled their decayed teeth with artificial or installed with dental prosthesis. As a conclusion, age is relevant in this study in p<0.05 level. 4 : In asking for efficient starting-year of tooth brushing, 42.6% said that 2 or 3 year age is the most efficient, and especially 80.6% teach children to learn brushing themselves. (P<0.05). As a conclusion, the voluntary brushing can be good behaviour for good dental health. 5 : In surveying the way they obtained dental information, 38.9% were given form mass media, but 90% were once not delivered with the education of dental health. Because parents have been known narrow and deficient information of dental health through mass media, experts in dental health have to deliver help their parents to be delivered with systematical dental information. The conclusion of this study can be summarized that parents' role is very important to their children's tooth health and the education program for systematical dental information should be delivered to their parents.
The purpose of this study was to survey on the Health promotion behavior practice. The subjects in this study were the 158 students who were in their first, second and third year in a middle school that was selected by convenience sampling from a city in Chung-cheong province. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 17.0 software. After a survey was conducted in November, 2010, the following findings were given: 33.8 percent of the students had ever smoked. The group of students who suffered less stress was significantly better at every part of health care except oral health and as for the status of oral health, the group who was less stressed had less decayed teeth, and the gap between them and the others was significant. The former was better at oral health control and expressed more satisfaction with their school lives as well. Variables that affect health-promoting behaviors include mental health, which showed the greatest impact.
This study was to figure out the influence of oral health behavior and periodontal status on their OHIP-14. Explained to 255 people who visited the scaling center of Dental Hygienics of a college in Gyeongbuk from March 7th to June 13th 2014 and it was agreed to perform. Result of dental plaque and calculus rate of those with no TBI were high; the less frequent do they teeth brushing the higher were their rate of dental plaque, bleeding and calculus, while their OHIP-14 was low. The rate of calculus of whom with no education on dental floss use and who do not use dental flosswas high. The more powerful for those with higher rate of dental plaque; while the lower was the rate of calculus the higher was OHIP-14. Therefore, the more do they brush their teeth and the lower are the rate of their calculus, the more positively has it been figured out to influence on the quality of their life of oral health. Consequently, public health program should be developed to educate them on the necessity of scaing on a regular basis and the cause calculus of occurrence, as well as a media through which they can easily participate in the program.
In the present work the knowledge of dental health as well as dental prosthesis has been studied on the basis of analysis of current dental prosthetic treatments for dental diseases prophylaxis and the final decision for dental prosthetic appliance. The results have been analyzed by the current dental health care and the subjective acknowledgement from 700 people of urban as well as rural inhabitance in our country. The results from the present work have been summarized as following: Depending dental status has been shown worse to be in the cases of divorce and bereavement, age and less educated or jobless. It is also interesting to note that the dental status has shown to be even worse than health status. It has been shown that the dental prosthetic treatments have been mainly caused by the oral disease (62.2%) and depend on the age and the educational level. According to the actual status of dental prosthetic treatments, the fixed partial denture was the most case (78.9%) that increased as divorced, bereavement and as less educated, less income, retired and jobless as well as from urban to rural. As a clinic for the dental prosthetic treatments, dental clinics have been most frequent visited as indicated by 59.6%, then the un-licensed dentist (6.5%), then the hospitals (3.7%), then the public health centers (2.2%). Most of those who are older in age, less educated and jobless have been treated by the un-licensed dentists. In point of view on the cost for dental prosthetic treatments, 93.1% have claimed to be too expensive, in as the divorced and the bereaved, the older age, the less educated and the jobless. About satisfaction of dental prosthetic treatments, 51.4% was satisfied, 39.4% was normal and 9.2% was dissatisfied. Most of people experienced increasing levels of satisfaction as their income increase. Most in the age range of 40-60 have wanted to be insured for the dental prosthetic treatments. It is also interesting to note that the older age and the less educated wanted to apply this kind of insurance.
The purpose of this study was to analysis know the important oral environmental factors which affect halitosis components of the adult in order to provide basic data for halitosis prevention and establish a device to eliminate halitosis efficiently. The 97 adults who visited at the Dental Clinic in Metropolis (M=68, F=30) participated in this study that performed from March in 2009 to in 2010. The obtained results through items as caries status, periodontal status, salivary flow, the viscosity, pH, Snyder test, plaque deposit, tongue plaque and halitosis check were as followings. The average shame of halitosis components appeared at hydrogen sulfide 36.71 ppb methyl mercaptan 31.46ppb dimethyl sulfide 54.33 ppb and Ammonia 22.60 ppm. The normality and the detection comparative result dimethyl sulfide above reverse appeared highly at 46.9%, ammonia appeared highly at 52%. According to the Hydrogen sulfide level was a high relationship among age, CPI, tongue coat status, DMFT index which were statistically significant (p<0.05). According to the quantity of hydrogen sulfide level there was relationship where tongue coat status Saliva flow rate considers statistically(p<0.05). The quantity of methyl mercaptan level there was relationship where Dimethyl sulfide level, tongue coat status, Saliva flow rate considers statistically(p<0.05). The quantity of Dimethyl sulfide level there was relationship where Hydrogen sulfide level, ammonia level, tongue coat status, Saliva pH and Saliva flow rate considers statistically(p<0.05). Ammonia level there was relationship where Methyl mercaptan level, CPI, and Saliva flow rate considers statistically(p<0.05).
