  • Carbon solid was prepared from dormant mesophase pitch (DMPP) without using a binder and its properties were characterized. DMPP powder was stabilized with air or nitric acid in pretreatment stage so that it might not soften in later heat ttreatment stage. Optimum sintering properties were obtained from carbon powder with 2.36∼2.38 of C/H atomic ratio and 1.27∼1.40 of C/O atomic ration in air stabilization. In nitric acid stabilization, optimum sintering properties were obtained when 20∼40 vol.% of nitric acid solution was used. Compressive strength increased up to 1200$^{\circ}C$ of heat treatment temperature, and the highest compressive strength and bulk density of carbon solid from DMPP were 3000 kgf/㎤, respectively. The optical properties of carbon solid obtained was fine mosaic structure. Carbon solid after graphitization showed the properties of hard carbon due to stabilization and its shore hardness was 120.

  • There are around 6700 millions tons of perlite reserves in the world. Although perlite possesses pozzolanic properties, it has not been so far used in soil stabilization. In this study, stabilization with perlite and lime of an expansive clayey soil containing smectite group clay minerals such as montmorillonite and nontronite was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, test mixtures were prepared with 8% of lime (optimum lime ratio of the soil) and without lime by adding 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of perlite. Geotechnical properties such as compaction, Atterberg limits, swelling, unconfined compressive strength of the mixtures and changes of these properties depending on perlite ratio and time were determined. The test results show that stabilization of the soil with combination of perlite and lime improves the geotechnical properties better than those of perlite or lime alone. This experimental study unveils that the mixture containing 30% perlite and 8% lime is the optimum solution in stabilization of the soil with respect to strength.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the organoleptic properties of mushroom pickles made at various compounding ratios according to central composite design for optimum organoleptic properties. In this study, various kinds of mushroom pickle were made at different compounding ratios of vinegar, sugar and salt-critical ingredients of the pickle recipe and the products were presented to an expert panel, who graded the subjects in 7 degrees for 5 items: color, flavor, hardness, taste and overall quality. As a result of sensory quality, mushroom pickles with 300g of vinegar, 150g of sugar and 60g of salt achieved the highest grade. Meanwhile, the results of Response Surface Methodology were different from the sensory quality results, showing that the optimum mixing conditions for overall organoleptic properties of mushroom pickle were 279.58g of vinegar, 179.34g of sugar and 59.09g of salt. (Ed- based on this conflict in results, I suggest that you make a final recommendation, of either the first, the second, or perhaps an intermediate, ratio)

  • Most of materials receive force in using, therefore, the characteristics of materials must be considered in system design not to occur deformation or destruction. Mechanical properties about materials can be expressed as responsible level of material itself under the exterior operation. Main mechanical properties is strength, hardness, ductility and stiffness etc. Currently, among major measure facilities to measure such mechanical properties, advanced indentation technique has focused in industrial areas as reason of nondestructive and easy applications for mechanical tensile properties and evaluation of residual stress of materials. This study is to find the optimum experimental condition about residual stress advanced indentation technique for accurate analysis of the welded joint of steel materials through indentation load-depth curve obtained from cruciform specimen experiment. Optimum selection was applied to the welded joint of real steel materials to give non-equi-biaxial stress state and compared with general residual stress analyzing method for verification.

  • Biodiesels are being explored as a clean energy alternative to regular diesel, which causes pollution. In this study, the optimum conditions for producing biodiesel (BD) by combining beef tallow, an animal waste resource with a high saturated fatty acid content, and corn oil, a vegetable oil with a high unsaturated fatty acid content, were investigated, and the fuel properties were analyzed. Furthermore, Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to verify the optimum conditions for producing biodiesel. The influences of control factors, such as the oil blend ratio and methanol to oil molar ratio, on the fatty acid methyl ester and biodiesel production yield were investigated. As a result, the optimum condition for producing blended biodiesel was verified to be tallow to corn oil blend ratio of 7 : 3 (TACO7) and a methanol to oil molar ratio of 14 : 1. Moreover, the interaction between the oil blend ratio and the methanol to oil molar ratio has the most crucial effects on the production of oil blended biodiesel. In conclusion, the analysis results of the fuel properties of TACO7 BD satisfied the BD quality standard, and thus, the viability of BD blended with waste tallow as fuel was verified.

  • Four dimensional response surface methodology was applied to determine the optimum conditions on organoleptic properties to develop red pepper jam into Korean type jam. The organoleptic color of red pepper jam showed maximum score of 8.08 in 14.24g pectin, 256.2g sucrose and 8.31ml citric acid(50% citric acid solution). The organoleptic taste of red pepper jam showed maximum score of 6.77 in 14.23g pectin, 202.1g sucrose and 8.19ml citric acid. Optimum conditions on the organoleptic mouth feel of red pepper jam were 14.34g in pectin, 255.6g in sucrose and 8.39ml in 50% citric acid solution. Maximized overall palatability of red pepper jam was 7.25 in 14.15g pectin, 257.08g sucrose and 8.19ml of 50% citric acid solution. The optimum preparation condition ranges on organoleptic properties of red pepper jam were 14.0~15.5g pectin, 225.0~257.0g sucrose and 8.0~8.2ml of 50% citric acid solution.

  • Thermal comfort and energy conservation are critical issues in the building sector. Energy consumption in the building sector should be reduced whilst enhancing the thermal comfort of occupants. Concrete is the most widely used construction material in buildings. Its thermal conductivity (k-value) has a direct effect on thermal comfort perception. This study aims to find the optimum value of replacing the normal aggregate with lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) under high strengths and low thermal conductivity, density and water absorption. The k-value of the LECA concrete and its physical and mechanical properties have varying correlations. Results indicate that the oven-dry density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and k-value of concrete decrease when normal coarse aggregates are replaced with LECA. However, water absorption (initial and final) increases. Thermal conductivity and the physical and mechanical properties have a strong correlation. The statistical optimisation of the experimental data shows that the 39% replacement of normal coarse aggregate by LECA is the optimum value for maximising the compressive and splitting tensile strengths whilst maintaining the k-value, density and water absorption at a minimum.

  • In order to analyze stamping processes and to select optimum material properties of sheet steels for customer lines, 3-dimensional finite element analysis software were used. Commercial explicit finite element code, PAM-STAMP, was able to simulate 3-dimensional press formed parts with good accuracy and gave some useful results by orthogonal array experiments. Deformation of draw-bead were predicted by ABAQUS accurately, so that material selection for those parts by simulation were possible.

  • Some properties of xylanase produced by Pleurotus ostreatus during its gorwth in a rice straw medium were investigated. The results are summarized as follows : 1) The optimum pH of xylanase was 5.0 and the stable pH ranged from 4.5 to 6.0. 2) The optimum temperature for the xylanse was around $50^{\circ}C$ and the xylanse activity was completely lost in 10 minutes at $70^{\circ}C$ 3) The activity of xylanse was inhibited by managanous ion, but was increased by other metalic ions. Especially K, Mg and Ca ions considerably increased the activity.
