Influence of Silane Coupling Agent on Properties of Filled Styrene-Butadiene Rubber Compounds

  • Influence of silane coupling agent, bis-(3-(triethoxisilyl)-propyl)-tetrassulfide, on cure characteristics and bound rubber content of filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds and on physical properties of the vulcanizates was studied. Carbon black-filled and silica-filled compounds were compared. Content of the bound rubber increased with increased content of the silane coupling agent and this trend was shown more clearly in the silica-filled compounds. Optimum cure time of the carbon black-filled compound increased with increase of the silane content, while that of the silica-filled one decreased. Cure rate of the carbon black-filled compound became slower as the silane content increased while that of the silica-filled one became faster. By increasing the silane content, the minimum torque decreased and the delta torque increased. Physical properties of the silica-filled vulcanizate were found to be improved by adding the silane coupling agent. However, for the carbon black-filled vulcanizates, the tensile strength and tear resistance decreased with increase of the silane content. The differences between the carbon black-filled and silica-filled compounds were explained by difference in the reactivities of the fillers with the silane.

  • The purpose of this dissertation is to study the vulcanization characteristics, compression set and other physical properties of NBR vulcanizates according to the various plasticizer and its content. Vulcanization characteristics were investigated by using cure that has obtained by means of rheometer and Mooney viscometer. The result of physical properties, vulcanization characteristics are as fellows. 1. The results of test for optimum cure time in vulcanization characteristics of NBR compounds indicated the rapidity of scorch time according to the increase of amounts of plasticizer. 2. In the test of compression set property, LCR was the best effect. 3. In the test of oil resistance, LCR was the best effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to get comparative results on the combined antioxidant systems comprised of MHPPD with IPPD, MHPPD with PBN and MHIPPD with MB when they are individually added to NR and SBR compound. Vulcanization characterstics and physical properties of the combined antioxidants have been studied by means of the Mooney viscometer, the Monsanto disc rheometer and so on. According to the test results, MHPPD with IPPD system has shown faster cure rate, better optimum cure time and shorter scorch time than other systems. The vulcanizate comprised of the MHPPD with IPPD antioxidant system has taken advantage of heat resistance, fluid resistance and antiozone resistance.

  • Cure behavior of an epoxy resin was investigated at different cure temperatures (110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 $^{\circ}C$) and cure times in the presence of 2 wt% of an N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) cationic catalyst by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The glass transition temperature ( $T_{g}$) and chemical conversion (x) at the different temperatures were determined from DSC thermograms. The $T_{g}$ and x vs. In time data were superposed up to $T_{g}$ = 10$0^{\circ}C$ and x = 0.70 by shifting horizontally at a reference temperature of $T_{g}$ = 13$0^{\circ}C$. It is interesting that the $T_{g}$ and x of the superposed data increase rather slowly in the early stage of cure and rapidly thereafter. Therefore, the increase of the $T_{g}$ and x can be divided into two regions; $R_{I}$= -18.4(= $T_{go}$ ) ~5$^{\circ}C$ and $R_{II}$ = 5 ~ 10$0^{\circ}C$ in $T_{g}$, and $R_{I}$ : 0~0.24 and $R_{II}$ : 0.24~0.70 in x. The $R_{I}$ is closely related to the initiation reactions between BPH and epoxy and between hydroxy group and epoxy in this epoxy/catalyst system. From the kinetic analysis of the $T_{g}$-shift, activation energy was 12.5 kcal/mol. The relationship between $T_{g}$ and x was also considered. The gelation and vitrification times for different cure temperatures were obtained from DMA curves.urves. DMA curves.urves.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate reinforced effect between silica treated by coupling agents and rubber matrix under the configuration chemical bonds, and the effect of silica particles coated by organic polymers using aluminum chloride as the catalyst. In vulcanization characteristies were tested by Curastometer. The M-series vulcanizates were reached to the fastest optimum cure $time(t_{90})$ and R-series vulcanizates with the same formula had the shorted optimum cure times. Tensile characteristics measuring with a tensile tester revealed that the M-series vulcanizate was the best in the physical properties, such as tensile strength. In 100% modulus, however, the S-series vulcanizates appeared to be better than the other vulcanizates. Also, hardness showed the following order : S-series>R-series>M-series with the order of elongation R-series>M-series>S-series. In SEM test, shapes of chemical treated silicas were observed. The dispersion of filler in the SBR composite appeard uniformly. In RDS test for the dynamic characteristics, G' indicates that S-3 shows the highest value with the next order M-3>R-3, and the order of damping values are as followe: M-3>M-3>R-3.

  • Post-cure characteristics of a silicone rubber material which is widely used for a LCD lamp holder were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Research was especially focussed on searching for the optimum post-cure conditions in relation to the practical operation environments. The results showed that incipient volatile temperature(Ti) during the process was considered as the most important factor and, thereby, post-curing for 2hrs at $250^{\circ}C$seemed to be a reasonable condition in the practical view-point. Arrhenius plot of shift factors which were empirically determined from the time-temperature-superposition-principle showed good linearity, exhibiting the post-cure mechanism might be proceeded through single mechanism with activation energy of 108.25kJ/mol.

  • To improve the adhesive strength of natural rubber (NR) for a seismic isolation damper, citraconic acid-g-NR (CCA-g-NR) was synthesized via the melt grafting of citraconic acid (CCA) onto NR using an azobisisnomerobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator. Subsequently, the influence of CCA and AIBN concentrations on the graft ratio G/R (%) and graft efficiency G/E (%) of the CCA-g-NR was investigated. The optimum CCA and AIBN concentrations required to achieve the desired G/R (3.49%) and G/E (49.8%) were found to be 7 phr and 0.13 phr, respectively. Additionally, we studied the influence of CCA-g-NR concentration on the mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at 300%), adhesive strength, and cure characteristics of the rubber compound in the seismic isolation damper. As the concentration of CCA-g-NR increased, the elongation at break and adhesive strength of the compound increased, whereas its tensile strength and modulus at 300% decreased. Moreover, as the concentration increased, the maximum torque decreased and the scorch time was delayed to obtain an optimal vulcanization time.

  • The purpose of this study is to get comparitive results on the combined accelerator systems comprised of MBT, MBTS, DPG and CBS with TMTD, TMTM and Zn-MDC to SBR compound. Vulcanization characterstics and physical properties of the combined accelerators have been studied by means of the Mooney viscometer, the Monsanto disc rheometer, tensile testing machine, aging chamber and so on. According to the test results, DPG, MBT and Zn-MDC system have show faster Mooney scorch time and optimum cure time than other systems. The Vulcanizate comprise of DPG, MBT and TMTD accelerator system has taken adventage of tensile strength, elongation, 100% modulus, resilience, compresion set.

  • The effect of triazine thiol derivative on the physical properties of silica-polychloroprene(CR) composites and glass fiber(MGF)-CR composites was investigated. Optimum cure time of the MGF composites filled with 2-dibuthylamino-4, 6-dithiol-s-triazine(DBT) was the fastest one, while maximum torque was the best in case of the silica composites filled with s-triazine-2,4,6-trithiol(TAT) on the Oscillating Disk Rheometer(ODR) test. Stress-strain curves of the composites showed that the physical properties such as 100% modulus, 300% modulus, tensile strength of the silica composites filled with DBT was very satisfactory and the silica composites filled with TAT was higher density of crosslinking than other crosslinked elastomer. In aging properties, elastomer filled DBT and TAT were progress post-curing reaction with increasing of aging time and it have been improved the tensile strength and crosslinking density.

  • In DGEBA/DDM system, the curing specimen are many curing factors which can affect on thermal and mechanical properties. This study was performed to prove the effect on curing specimen prepared by changing of the curing factors which are curing time and temperature of DGEBA/DDM system. As a result on thermal and mechanical properties, flexural strength, modulus and glass transition temperature (Tg) were increased with curing time and temperature were increased. It was found that the optimum curing condition of DGEBA/DDM system cure at $150^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs at equivalent ratio of 1/1.
