The preparation of AlN powder by SHS in the system of $Al-AlN-NH_4Cl$ was investigated in this study. In the preparation of AlN powder, the effect of gas pressure and the composition such as Al, AlF, and additive in mixture on the reactivity were investigated. At 60 atm of the initial inert gas pressure in reactor, the optimum composition for the preparation of pure AlN was 35 wt%Al+5 wt% $NH_4Cl+60wt%$AlN. The AlN powder synthesized in this condition was a single phase AlN with a whisker morphology.
This study carried out numerical analysis of flow field of combustion gas and sorbent to test sorbent efficiency of DSI process. To provide rapid mixing for increase utilization rate of sorbent, streamwise vorticity can be introduced into the flowing streams by other means; for example, by installing vortex generators immediately downstream of the wavy trailing edge. Computing results show that the degree of sorbent dispersion depends strongly on duct structure. Highest dispersion efficiency received when vortex generator was installed inside of duct. The results presented in this study a optimum condition for the development of practical DSI process.
The major purpose of this study is to find the optimized split injection quantities and dwell angles for PM reduction without increasing NOx. The tests were performed on a Common-Rail DI Diesel Engine to obtain optimum injection timing and duration. In this study, total injection quantities were divided into the ratio of 25-75%, 50-50% and 75-25%. NOx and PM were measured on the condition of the same bsfc by increasing dwell angles. It was found that the split injection reduced NOx with dwell angle increase. For 50_50, 75_25% split injection cases, PM was reduced with 10 to 12(CAD) dwell angles. For 25_75% split injection 33% PM reduction was achieved with 8 to 12(CAD) dwell angles.

In this paper, optimized operating parameters were found using multi-dimensional engine simulation software (KIVA-3V) and micro-genetic algorithm for heavy duty diesel engine. The engine operating condition considered was at 1,737 rev/min and 57 % load. Engine simulation model was validated using an engine equipped with a high pressure electronic unit injector (HEUI) system. Three important parameters were used for the optimization - boost pressure, EGR rate and start of injection timing. Numerical optimization identified HCCI-like combustion characteristics showing significant improvements for the soot and $NO_X$ emissions. The optimized soot and $NO_X$ emissions were reduced to 0.005 g/kW-hr and 1.33 g/kW-hr, respectively. Moreover, the optimum results met EPA 2007 mandates at the operating point considered.
In general, crankshafts which are used in internal combustion reciprocating engines are subjects to high torsional vibration. Therefore, a damper is often used to minimize the torsional vibration in reciprocating engines. In this paper, in order to investigate damping performance of viscous damper, the real effective viscosity and complex damping coefficient of silicone oil, and the effective inertia moment of inertia ring are calculated considering the relative motion between damper casing and inertia ring. Based on these results multi-cylinder shaft is modeled into equivalent 2-degree of freedom system and optimum condition is estimated by calculating the amplification factor of viscous damper. Also the test damper was manufactured according to the result of theoretical investigation, the performance and durability was ascertained through experimental examination.
The test of engine performance using the engine dynamometer needs technical researchers and facilities. A variety of CAE analysis programs and DoE(Design of Experiments) are used to analyze data efficiently instead of tests. The study got data from simulations of WAVE that used to model the SI engine to identify performance of engine. DoE makes it possible to know effectiveness of factors for power, BSFC, volume efficiency and find optimum condition in each factor through minimizing number of experiments. CA50 has effect on power and BSFC as volume efficiency is related with cylinder liner temperature and heat coefficients. The final result in DoE could be identified of consistency above 98% after substituting the data to WAVE.
This study was performed to obtain the basic data which could be used for the modification of the manual center-burner-type rice-husk furnace into a small scale automatic type for the multi-purpose use in the farm. For this purpose, first, the utilization feasibility of the rice-husk furnace in the farm was analyzed briefly in aspects of available amount of rice-husk for the fuel, annual operation time and replaceble amount of residential heating energy with rice-husk in the farm. For the experiment a prototype furnace geared with an automatic feeding device was fabricated, and feed rate, mold size and chimney height were changed to investigate the combustion efficiency of rice-husk and thermal efficiency of the furnace. Also, optimum and limiting operational factors were observed in each treatments. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. If the rice-husk is intensively used for residential heating in the farm for winter season, on an average 51 percent of the total heating energy can be replaced with the rice-husk. Therefore, development of a small scale automatic rice-husk furnace was recognized to be feasible. 2. The operational condition depending on husk-feed rates was very important factor for successive steady burning operation of the given furnace. When the feed-rate was 1.5 kg/hr, the top of the burning zone should be kept at the position about 55 cm from the bottom of the combustion chamber with the periodic removal of ash (termed as steady state position), which was 18 cm above the mold waist. When the feed rates were 2.4 kg/hr and 3.0 kg/hr, the steady state position was at about 4 cm above the mold waist. 3. The mold size affected inflow rate of air into the furnace and consequently CO content in the exhaust gas. The relatively bigger mold gave positive effect on the air-inflow rate. 4. When the husk-feed rates were 1.5 kg/hr, 2.4 kg/hr, 3.0 kg/hr, the combustion efficiencies of the rice-husk were 98.5%, 97.4% and 95.0%, the thermal efficiencies of the furnace were 93.4%, 93.2% and 87.6%, and CO content in the exhaust gas were 1.21%, 1.03%, and 2.43%, respectively. The air-inflow rates were decreased with the increase of feed rates. When the amount of excess air was 30-40%, the CO content in the exhaust gas was at the minimum level. 5. When the chimney height was lowered from 260 cm to 96 cm, the air-inflow rate was slightly decreased, but the average temperature in the combustion chamber, CO content in the exhaust gas and combustion and thermal efficiencies were not changed significantly. 6. The incidental problems associated with the protytype furnace were accumulation of the ash inside the mold, accumulation of the cinder between the outer-drum of the furnace and the combustion chamber wall, and accumulation of the cinder in the chimney.

Air-staged combustion is known to be one of the techniques of NOx reduction. The objective of this study is to determine the optimal ratio of air flow distributed for CCOFA and SOFA; at this optimal ratio, the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of a pulverized coal-fired boiler are maintained at a satisfactory level. A numerical investigation was performed at various airflow ratios of 16.7/83.3%, 25/75%, 50/50%, 75/25%, and 83.3/16.7%. An inert gas was considered as a substitute for air to isolate the effects of the cooling process and chemical reaction on NOx reduction; during NOx reduction in air-staged combustion, both the effects typically occur simultaneously. The results of our study show that the optimum condition, under which the maximum NOx reduction and highest boiler efficiency can be obtained, corresponds to the equal splitting of the over-fire air between CCOFA and SOFA.

Co-firing of biomass with coal is a promising combustion technology in a coal-fired power plant. However, it still requires verifications to apply co-firing in an actual boiler. In this study, data from the Thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and Drop tube furnace(DTF) were used to obtain the combustion characteristics of biomass when co-firing with coal. The combustion characteristics were verified using experimental results including reactivity from the TGA and Unburned carbon(UBC) data from the DTF. The experiment also analyzed with the variation of the biomass blending ratio and biomass particle size. It was determined that increasing the biomass blending ratio resulted in incomplete chemical reactions due to insufficient oxygen levels because of the rapid initial combustion characteristics of the biomass. Thus, the optimum blending condition of the biomass based on the results of this study was found to be 5 while oxygen enrichment reduced the increase of UBC that occurred during combustion of blended biomass and coal.
Recently, a variable valve timing system has been widely adopted in internal combustion engine in order to improve the fuel economy and torque at low engine speed. In addition, it is known that varying valve timing according to the various engine operations could reduce exhaust gas, especially NOx, because of residual gas by valve overlap. In this study, to improve the low exhaust gas and fuel economy at part load condition, the residual gas and back flow of exhaust gas due to valve overlap were calculated computationally. Moreover, the characteristics of engine performances and NOx formations were investigated with the experiment of combination of intake and exhaust valve timing condition. Under these various valve operating conditions, the effects of both the positive valve overlap and negative valve overlap(valve underlap) were examined simultaneously. Finally, the characteristics of cyclic THC emission were analyzed by using Fast Response FID(FR-FID) in the cylinder, intake port and exhaust port positions. Besides, the effect of the different gradients of the valve timing change on engine performance was investigated and an optimum control strategy was suggested.
