Topology optimization of structures seeking the best distribution of mass in a design space to improve the structural performance and reduce the weight of a structure is one of the most comprehensive issues in the field of structural optimization. In addition to structures stiffness as the most common objective function, frequency optimization is of great importance in variety of applications too. In this paper, an efficient multi-objective Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method is developed for topology optimization of frequency and stiffness in continuum structures simultaneously. A software package including a Matlab code and Abaqus FE solver has been created for the numerical implementation of multi-objective BESO utilizing the weighted function method. At the same time, by considering the weaknesses of the optimized structure in single-objective optimizations for stiffness or frequency problems, slight modifications have been done on the numerical algorithm of developed multi-objective BESO in order to overcome challenges due to artificial localized modes, checker boarding and geometrical symmetry constraint during the progressive iterations of optimization. Numerical results show that the proposed Multiobjective BESO method is efficient and optimal solutions can be obtained for continuum structures based on an existent finite element model of the structures.
In optimization problems, computationally intensive or expensive simulations hinder the use of standard optimization techniques because the computational expense is too heavy to implement them at each iteration of the optimization algorithm. Therefore, those expensive simulations are often replaced with approximation models which can be evaluated nearly free. However, because of the limited accuracy of the approximation models, it is practically impossible to find an exact optimal point of the original problem. Significant efforts have been made to overcome this problem. The approximation models are sequentially updated during the iterative optimization process such that interesting design points are included. The interesting points have a strong influence on making the approximation model capture an overall trend of the original function or improving the accuracy of the approximation in the vicinity of a minimizer. They are successively determined at each iteration by utilizing the predictive ability of the approximation model. This paper will focuses on those approaches and introduces various approximation methods.
The door stiffness is one of the important factors for the side impact. Generally, the researches have been conducted on the assembled door. A side impact door beam is installed in a door to protect occupants from the side impact. This research is only concentrated on the side impact beam and a side impact beam is designed. The cross section is defined to have an elliptic shape. An optimization problem is defined to find the design maximizing the intrusion stiffness within the specified weight. Design variables are the radii and the thickness of the ellipsoid. The analysis of the side impact is carried out by the nonlinear finite element method. The optimization problem is solved by two methods. One is the experimental design scheme using an orthogonal array. The other is the gradient-based optimization using the response surface method(RSM). Both methods have obtained the better designs than the current one.
The goal of multiphase optimization of machine structure is to obtain 1) light weight, 2) statically and dynamically rigid structure. The entire optimization process is carried out in two phases. In the first phase, multiple optimization problem with two objective functions is treated using pareto genetic algorithm. Two objective functions are weight of the structure, and static compliance. In the second phase, maximum receptance is minimized using genetic algorithm. The method is applied to design of quill type machine structure with back column.
This work is concerned with the topology optimization of three-dimensional cooling fins or heat sinks. Motivated by earlier success of the Internal Element Connectivity Method (I-ECP) method in two-dimensional problems, the extension of I-ECP to three-dimensional problems is carried out. The main efforts were made to maintain the numerical trouble-free characteristics of I-ECP for full three-dimensional problems; a serious numerical problem appearing in thermal topology optimization is erroneous temperature undershooting. The effectiveness of the present implementation was checked through the design optimization of three-dimensional fins.
Uncertainties in loads, materials and manufacturing quality must be considered during electromagnetic devices design. This paper presents an effective methodology for robust optimization design based on the variance decomposition in order to keep higher accuracy of the robustness prediction. Sobol' theory is employed to estimate the response variance under some specific tolerance in design variables. Then, an optimal design is obtained by adding a criterion of response variance upon typical optimization problems as a constraint of the optimization. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed method applies the variance decomposition to obtain a more accurate variance of the response, as well save the computational cost. The performance and robustness of the proposed algorithms are investigated through a numerical experiment with both an analytic function and the TEAM 22 problem.
Generally, most of optimization have been performed with fixed sizes and variables. But, the optimum value considering tolerance of design variables and material properties, might be useless owing to exist in infeasible region. It is needed that the tolerance of design variables and material properties is considered for a real design problem. A deterministic optimal solution can be in the feasible region by performing robust optimization considering tolerance. In the paper, robust design is suggested to gain an optimum insensitive to variation of design variables and it is applied for optimization problem of caliper disc brakes for vehicles.

For multi-body dynamic problems. especially coalescent eigenvalue problems with multiobjective optimization, the design sensitivity analysis is too much complicated mathematically and numerically. Therefore, this article proposes a new technique for structural dynamic modification using a mode modification and homologous structures design method with Genetic Algorithm(GA). In this work, the homologous structure of the resiliently mounted multi-body for marine diesel generator systems is studied and the problem is treated as a combinational optimization problem using the GA. In GA formulation, fitness is defined based on penalty function approach. That include homology, allowable stress and minimum weight of common plate.
The solution of the aircraft wing spar cross-section area optimization problem is obtained by the response surface method. The object function of the problem is wing total weight, design variables are spar cross-section areas, constraints are the conditions that the stresses at the each spar is less than the allowable stress. D-Optimal condition is utilized to obtain the experimental points to construct the response surfaces. D-Optimal experimental points are obtained by the commercial software "Deign-Expert". Response values for the object function and constraints for each experimental point are calculated by the NASTRAN. Response surfaces for object function and constraints are approximated from the response values by the least square method. The optimization solution is obtained by the DOT for the response surfaces of object function and constraints. The optimization results obtained from the response surface are compared with the results obtained by the NASTRAN SOL200.
For the state estimation problem, the weighted least squares (WLS) method and the fast decoupled method are widely used at present. However, these algorithms can converge to local optimal solutions. Recently, modern heuristic optimization methods such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) have been introduced to overcome the disadvantage of the classical optimization problem. However, heuristic optimization methods based on populations require a lengthy computing time to find an optimal solution. In this paper, we used PSO to search for the optimal solution of state estimation in power systems. To overcome the shortcoming of heuristic optimization methods, we proposed parallel processing of the PSO algorithm based on the PC cluster system. the proposed approach was tested with the IEEE-118 bus systems. From the simulation results, we found that the parallel PSO based on the PC cluster system can be applicable for power system state estimation.
