  • Continuous production of fructooligosaccharides from sucrose by a dual immobilized enzyme system of fructosyltransferase and glucose isomerase was studied in a column reactor. The optimal temperature and pH of the immobilized fructosyltransferase were $65^{\circ}C$ and 5.5, respectively. The activity of glucose isomerase was favorable as temperature and pH were increased within the ranges examined. However, both the immobilized enzymes were thermally unstable over $5^{\circ}C$, suggesting that long-term operation of the dual immobilized enzyme column should be carried out below $50^{\circ}C$. The optimum packing ratio of fructosyltransferase to glucose isomerase was found to be around 5/3. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the dual enzyme column was successfully operated for 40 days without any loss of initial enzyme activities, yielding 66% of fructooligosaccharides. Furthermore, the relative sweetness of fructooligosaccharides produced by a dual emzyme system was enhanced by 6% compared with that of fructosyltransferase alone.

  • Purpose: Who may dare to state that optimal choice of treating nasal bone fracture is closed reduction? Few decades of authors' experience in nasal bone fracture has lead to believe that more active and assertive approach in nasal bone fracture by performing simultaneous lateral osteotomy may be applied in proper indications to acquire more accurate reduction and cosmetically satisfying result. Methods: From May 2008 to October 2009, among 241 nasal bone fracture patients, 20 patients underwent simultaneous lateral osteotomy with nasal bone fracture reduction. Followed by rigid septal correction, nasal cavity is packed to stabilize the fracture segment for safer osteotomy. Through intranasal incision, in selected cases of difficult reduction or for cosmetic purposes, various types of lateral osteotomy was performed corresponding to the fracture anatomy, conditions of the nasal cavity. Postoperative nasal packing was retained for one week and nasal dorsum splint for 3 weeks. Results: Lateral osteotomy was utilized for difficult cases of closed reduction, for correction of wide nose, hump and deviation in 9, 5, 2, and 4 cases, respectively. Patient satisfaction was scaled 90% in satisfaction and moderate in 10% (2 cases), complaining of mild nasal tip deviation. Physicians detected 2 cases of apparent deformity with patient recognition; one patient with mild step deformity at the osteotomy site and the other patient with minimal implant mobility. Conclusion: By accompanying profound understanding of the fracture anatomy, more active and assertive approach in nasal fracture reduction can be coincide with simultaneous lateral osteotomy to reduce the rate of secondary deformity and to obtain more cosmetically satisfying result.

  • The effects of packaging methods on the storage quality of minimally processed (prepeeled) onions were investigated to determine the optimal packing design. Various packaging treatments used for modifying headspace atmospheres included two passive MAP using LDPE and PP films, two active MAP using a gas mixture of 20% $O_2/10%\;CO_2/balance\;N_2$ and an ethylene scavenging sachet, and moderate vacuum packaging (MVP). The quality attributes of onion samples were evaluated periodically in terms of flesh weight loss, color of cut surface, decay ratio, microbial counts, and sensory properties during storage at $10^{\circ}C$ for 28 days. Packaging methods did not significantly influence surface color, weight loss, and microbiological populations of mesophiles, psychrotrophs, and lactic acid bacteria. They did, however, affect sensory characteristics as well as decay occurrence. Results indicated that seal-packaging with a gas-permeable plastic film under a mild vacuum condition could retain better onion quality in terms of microbial decay and visual sensory aspects as compared with the other packages.

  • Porous medium was considered in the present study for the heat transfer enhancement. This was attributed to its high surface area to volume ratio as well as intensive flow mixing by tortuous flow passages. But when the air or water flow through in the porous medium, it is occurred the pressure drop between inlet and outlet. So in the present study investigated simulation result about the pressure drop in the porous medium before apply to heat exchanger. In this simulation, the thickness of the solid inside the porous medium region was varied 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm. And then the simulation result were compared the pressure drop in the same unit cell ($0.5\;mm{\times}0.5\;mm{\times}0.5\;mm$). To make the analysis model, it was assumed the 14-sided tetrakaidecahedron cell which has long been considered the optimal packing cell first proposed by the Lord Kelvin in 1887. And then the simulation is carried out using by STAR-CCM+ which is commercial software. The simulation result can be showed quantified pressure drop by solid effect in the porous medium.

  • This study investigated the effects of food type (condensed freshwater Chlorella, dried Chlorella, dried Spirulina, dried Schizochytrium, baker's yeast and $\omega-yeast$) and amount, and supplementation of vitamin $B_{12}$ on the growth of freshwater rotifer (Brachionus calyciflorus) in high density culture. Growth of rotifers fed condensed freshwater Chlorella was the highest and its density ranged $7.65-8.14{\times}10^3\;inds./mL.$ The primary lipid acids of rotifers fed condensed freshwater Chloyella were linoleic and linolenic, and their amount ($\%$ of total fatty acids) were $48.8\%\;and\;26.8\%,$ respectively. This suggests that condensed freshwater Chlorella would be an effective diet for high quality and quantity rotifers, which in turn serve as live food for freshwater fish larvae. Growth rate of rotifers with Chlorella supplementation increased as amount of supplementation increased up to 1.5 and 2.5 mg at 28 and $32^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, undissolved ammonia toxicity and packing volume of Chlorella in culture medium, reached the optimal conditions for the stable and effective cultivation of rotifers when amount of condensed freshwater Chlorella was 1.5 mg in dry weight per 1,000 rotifers at $28^{\circ}C\;and\;32^{\circ}C$ Growth of rotifers in condensed freshwater Chlorella with vitamin $B_{12}$ supplementation was significantly higher than that of rotifers without supplementation. However, no significant difference was found among the different concentrations of vitamin $B_{12}.$ Therefore, vitamin $B_{12}$ could improve the growth of rotifers (B. calyciflorus).

  • The chemical tank loading problem has been classified as nondeterministic polynomial time (NP)-complete problem because of the polynomial-time algorithm to find the solution has been unknown yet. Gu$\acute{e}$ret et al. tries to obtain the optimal solution using linear programming package with $O(m^4)$ time complexity for chemical tank loading problem a kind of bin packing problem. On the other hand, this paper suggests the rule of loading chemical into minimum margin tank algorithm with O(m) time complexity. The proposed algorithm stores the chemical in the tank that has partial residual of the same kind chemical firstly. Then, we load the remaining chemical to the minimum marginal tanks. As a result of experiments, this algorithm reduces the $O(m^4)$ of linear programming to O(m) time complexity for NP-complete chemical tank loading problem.

  • This study aimed at establishing a packaging standardization method that allows the maintenance of biological control agents product quality during delivery. First, based on the results of distribution status analysis of biological control agent products from four manufacturers, we confirmed that the mean temperature was maintained at 25.6℃ (minimum and maximum temperatures.: 18.1 and 30.7℃, respectively) inside the packaging box of each company for 36-48 h. To establish the optimal packaging method for each season, seven external temperature conditions were set ranging between 0℃ and 30℃ at intervals of 5℃. In addition, we evaluated internal temperature maintenance performance for each coolant pack handling method and determined 14 packaging combinations. A packaging combination that maintained a temperature of 3℃ - 9.9℃ at each external temperature conditions was considered efficient. This temperature range is close to a lower developmental threshold at which the biological control agents can survive with minimum energy for 12 h (direct delivery time), or 36-48 h (general delivery time) after packaging.
