  • This paper presents the system demonstrator for an optical fiber sensor system developed as a technological evaluator suitable for generic sensric sensing applications. The new type of fiber-optic sensor employed a diaphragm displacement transforms pressure into optical intensity. Form this sensing technique, we can know the variation of source intensity, the loss of a optical fiber, and the reflectivity of the diaphragm surface. Experimental results are applied to the low-pressure transducer suitable for measuring miniature pressure.

  • We report some methods for measuring a LiNbO$_3$ optical phase modulator bandwidth. Since Mach-Zehnder waveguide type, one of methods for modulation bandwidth measurement, is comparatively simple and useful, it was adapted in this work. In order to confirm this method, the waveguide of single and Mach-Zehnder type were fabricated on the same wafer. The Mach-Zehnder interferometric waveguide and the single channel waveguide were used for the measurement of the phase modulator's driving voltage and bandwidth for device fabrications, respectively. Ti-860$\AA$ in-diffusion was achieved in a wet-bubbling oxygen environment at 105$0^{\circ}C$/8hours. LINbO$_3$ internal chips were pigtailed to PMF(polarization maintaining fiber)/SMF(single mode fiber) using an epoxy curing technique. Examined were optical properties such as an insertion loss, propagation loss and mode size, and the loss mechanism of optical coupling between an optical fiber and a waveguide was considered.

  • Photovoltaic solar cells are all in the incident because they are not converted into electrical energy, high-efficiency solar cells in order to reduce the loss of elements must be. Significant factor in the loss of solar cells, optical loss and electrical loss can be divided into. Optical losses occur when the sun will be joined on the surface of the reflection, the shadow loss due to electrodes, and the losses are in the solar wavelengths. Commercialization is currently the most common solar cells on the front of the light incident on the electrode is formed. Therefore, the shadow caused by the electrode to cover the dead area of the sun, due to factors that hinder the absorption of sunlight which is shadowing them and conversion efficiency of solar cells is the inhibition factor. These barriers to eliminate the electrode linewidth reduces the shadowing to reduce, but simply of the electrode line width is reduced electrode area by reducing the series resistance elevates this because to improve the electrode Aspect ratio(height/width) to increase Ag development of paste is required. In this study, aspect ratio of screen-printing method to increase the electrode Ag paste composition of the binder for the characterization of rheology in the shadow of the electrode by reducing the optical loss of the photoelectric conversion efficiency of solar cells to boost the performance measures was. Properties and printability of the paste, the binder resin sintered characteristics that affect the thermal properties are excellent with a good screen printability acrylic resin, ethyl cellulose, using a resin were evaluated. Prepared paste rheology properties, was formed to evaluate the electrode conductivity and aspect ratio.

  • An Er-doped sulfide fiber was drawn, and its spectroscopic properties were analyzed. Compositions of a 1000 ppmwt Er3+-doped core and an undoped clad were Ge30-Ga1-Asg-S61 and Ge30-As8-S62, in at.%, respectively. Refractive index of the core composition was approximately 0.01 high than that of the clad. In order to enhance the mechanical stability as well as to prevent infiltration of impurity ions such as OH-, an UV-curable polymer was used for the coating. The optical loss of a fiber formed directly from a polymer coated core rod without cladding was ∼15 dB/m at 1.06$\mu\textrm{m}$. In the case of a fiber with core/clad structure, the optical loss was so high that the stimulated emission of erbium fluorescence was not evident. It is believed that presence of inhomogeneous core/clad interface and crystalline aggregates precipitated in the clad region were responsible for the high optical loss. On the other hand, fluorescence characteristics of Er3+ embedded in the core region were more or loss deteriorate compared to fiber preform, which is attributed to the redistribution of the Er ions along with the partial crystallization of the core glass during the fiberization process.

  • In this paper, 8-channel multiplexer with 100GHz channel spacing is fabricated. The 8-channel multiplexer is fabricated by connecting three cascaded Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) of optical fiber type, and each interferometer has the wavelength interval of 100GHz, 200GHz and 400GHz, respectively. furthermore, to acquire uniform insertion loss, it is fabricated by using Wavelength Flatten Coupler (WFC) in which the variation of insertion loss is low. Especially, the variation of wavelength interval in the output is explicitly simulated as a function of optical path difference, and the wavelength coupling process along with cascaded connection is discussed. $CO_2$ laser to adjust precisely the wavelength. In summary, The prototype composed by eight cascaded MZI has an insertion loss of 2.1dB, the bandwidth of 0.8nm at 5.5dB point, and channel crosstalk of 25dB Furthermore, the loss dependent on polarization is measured as 0.06dB.

  • Torque of a rotating shaft has been mostly measured by strain gages combined with either a slip ring or telemetry. However, these methods have severe inherent problems like low S/N ratio, high cost, limited number of channels and difficult installation. In this paper, a new method using FBG(fiber bragg grating) sensors and a rotary optical coupler for online non-contact torque monitoring is suggested. FBG sensor can measure both strain and temperature, and has much batter characteristics than those of a strain gage. A rotary optical coupler is a optical connecting device between a rotating shaft and stationary side without any physical contact. It has been devised for transmitting light between a rotating optical fiber and a stationary optical fiber. The proposed method uses this rotary optical coupler to connect FBG sensors on the rotating shaft to instruments at stationary side. And a reference FBG sensor is also applied to compensate the insertion loss change of the rotary optical coupler due to rotation. Three FBG sensors have been fabricated in a single optical fiber. Two FBG sensors are attached on the shaft surface to measure torque and one sensor is installed at the shaft center to compensate the insertion loss change. The torque of a rotating shaft has been successfully measured by the suggested method proving its superior performance potential.

  • We have proposed a novel planar lightwave circuit (PLC) optical sensor to monitor the contamination in a flow-cell where water is continuously supplied through a water quality measurement system. We designed a PLC chip with a V-shape waveguide and the simulated its function as a sensor for monitoring contamination in a flow-cell using a numerical the FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) analysis. A novel cross type of waveguide was introduced to make the PLC chip of the V-shaped waveguide. The fabricated PLC was cut into the cross waveguide. A change in the optical propagation loss of the PLC sensor was observed after immersing the PLC sensor into city water. It was determined that the propagation loss of the PLC sensor was 3 dB at a wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ in the city water for 15 days.

  • To make high speed spindle system work properly, sensors with outstanding resolution and dynamic characteristics are essential. An optical fiber displacement sensor is based on simple principles. Electrical signal responds to the optical flux change due to the displacement change between a target and a sensor probe. In this paper, the performance of optical fiber displacement sensor has been investigated according to properties of optical fiber Firstly, optical loss has been measured before and after polishing optical fiber endface. Secondly, allowance of optical fiber bending has been tested. thirdly sensitivity and linear range of the sensor has been found out according to the shape of cross section of optical fiber.

  • The objective of this study is to obtain thermally stable and low optical loss polymers for optical waveguiding materials. The crosslinkable poly (maleimide-co-methacrylate)s were synthesized using a pentafluorophenylmaleimide (an optical loss reducer), two methacrylate derivatives (refractive index controllers), and a glycidylmethacrylate (a crosslinker). These copolymers exhibited good thermal stability and could be thermally crosslinked by heat treatment. The refractive indexes of the copolymers could be precisely controlled by the variation of comonomer feed ratio, which was in the range of 1.45 ~ 1.49. These copolymers had very low birefringence of $6{ imes}10^{-4}$ ~ $1{ imes}10^{-4}$. These copolymers were crosslinked by contact printing and then developed by wet etching to obtain high quality waveguide pattern.

  • Due to large demand for high speed and great capacity for data transfer, WDM, which uses the wavelength division multiplexing technique, is known as alternative way to satisfy those demand for its flexible network operation and management, easy network expansion with existing networks, and enhancement of efficient data transfer rate. For these reasons, a new high capacity WDM optical communication network plan was established. Therefore, the quality of currently deployed optical cables with 81.6 km in length should be assessed to ensure if high capacity WDM system could be implemented on existing optical cables. Two important characteristic parameters, Transfer Loss and PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion), were measured to evaluate quality of existing optical cable. Transfer Loss was measured at 0.244 dB per kilometer, which is lower than the design standard value at 0.275 dB/km. The measured PMD value gave at 0.030ps/km, and it, therefore, satisfies the value recommended by ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union-T) of 0.5ps/km. In addition, the transfer characteristic for existing 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps system were measured and evaluated, and the results showed that error-free transfer is very much feasible. Computer simulation for DWDM system, which is likely be a future backbone network in Korea, to assess the transfer characteristic using the same condition employed for 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps was carried out as well. The simulation verified that a stable network operation and reliable service could be provided.
