  • A signal processing method for white light interferometry (WLI), which performs a series of analog signal processing steps to locate the central interference fringe position at high speed: is developed and applied to a WLI temperature sensor system. We found that the new method has random walk of $0.019^{\circ}C/\sqrt{Hz}$ with good linearity. However, the temperature change in the path-matching interferometer results in drift of the measured sensor output. The temperature dependence of drift in the WLI temperature sensor system, was calculated to be $1.42{\mu}m/^{\circ}C$. It is also found that the relationship between the peak spacing in the interferogram and the spacing measured by the method can be nonlinear when the fringe spacing is comparable to the coherence length of the source.

  • We present a compensation method of the phase change upon reflection in the scannll1g whIte light interferometry. which pracl1cally allows precIse 3-D profIle mappmg for compo~Ite target surfaces comprising of multipledissinular matenals. The compensation method estimates the vanatlon 01 pbase change with the spectral distribution of the light source through first-order approximation, and then diIectly compensates the measurement errors by perIormmg two-wavelength white light intetferomctric measurements. Experimental results prove that the proposed self-compensatIOn mcthod is capable of reducing the measmement error in step height gauging within $\pm2nm$..

  • We prove that 3-D profile mapping using white light interferometry has systematic errors caused by aberrations of the optimal system. The tilt of an object invokes an offset between the object and the reference ray, which eventually makes the aberration cancel incompletely. The fringe peak of a white light interferogram is mainly affected by the aberration effect while the envelope peak remains stable. By the difference between the two peaks, it is easily confirmed how much the error existed in the fringe peak. Experimental results prove that the error caused by aberration is varied by object tilt, microscope NA, optics alignment within the range of $\pm$50nm.

  • In this paper, a new encryption method for a binary image using Phase modulation and Fourier transform is proposed. For decryption we use the characteristics of square law detector. In encryption process, a key image is obtained by phase modulation of 256 level random pattern and its Fourier transformation, and input image is encrypted by Fourier transforming the multiplication of the phase modulated random pattern and phase modulated input image. The encrypted image and key image have only phase information, so they can not be copied or counterfeited and the original image can not be decrypted without the key image. To reconstruct the original image, each phase mask of the key image and the encrypted image must be placed on each path of the Mach-Zehnder interferometry with Fourier transform lens and the output image is obtained in the form of intensity in the CCD(Charge Coupled Device) camera. The real-time decryption is possible in the proposed system by use of a LCD as a phase modulator and a CCD camera as an intensity detector. The proposed method shows a good performance in the computer simulation and optical experiment as an encryption scheme.

  • A Fizeau interferometer without beam splitter was constructed. Single-mode optical fiber was used as a spherical wave source and the face of fiber end was polished and coated to be a reflecting surface. The reflecting surface was angled so that interference fringe could be detected by CCD camera. Beam splitter in front of a spherical wave source could distort the wave front and that was one of the component error sources. With the proposed configuration there was no need to place beam splitter in the system. Improvement of phase measuring accuracy was evaluated quantitatively by comparing the result of this setup with that of a conventional Fizeau interferometer. Wave front of the angled end-face optical fiber source was also measured to verify its sphericity by PS/PDI (Phase Shifting/Point Diffraction Interferometer). The principle of this technique was presented and the experimental results and its applications were discussed. ussed.

  • A photonic integrated interferometric imaging system possesses the characteristics of small-scale, low weight, low power consumption, and better image quality. It has potential application for replacing conventional large space telescopes. In this paper, the principle of photonic integrated interferometric imaging is investigated. A novel lenslet array arrangement and lenslet pairing approach are proposed, which are helpful in improving spatial frequency coverage. For the novel lenslet array arrangement, two short interference arms were evenly distributed between two adjacent long interference arms. Each lenslet in the array would be paired twice through the novel lenslet pairing approach. Moreover, the image reconstruction model for optical interferometric imaging based on compressed sensing was established. Image simulation results show that the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of the reconstructed image based on compressive sensing is about 10 dB higher than that of the direct restored image. Meanwhile, the normalized mean square error (NMSE) of the direct restored image is approximately 0.38 higher than that of the reconstructed image. Structural similarity index measure (SSIM) of the reconstructed image based on compressed sensing is about 0.33 higher than that of the direct restored image. The increased spatial frequency coverage and image reconstruction approach jointly contribute to better image quality of the photonic integrated interferometric imaging system.

  • Demand for high precision measurement of large area is increasing in many industrial fields. White-light Scanning Interferometer(WSI) is a well-known method for 3D profile measurement. However WSI has some limitations in a measurement range because of the sensing mechanism. Therefore, in this paper we use a heterodyne laser interferometer to get over the limitations of a short measurement range in WSI, We suggest a new WSI system combined with heterodyne laser interferometer. This system is aimed at eliminating Abbe error with measuring the focus point directly. With the use of triggering functionality of WSI, we can use this system as a probe of a precision stage such as a probe of CMM. The suggested system gives a repeatability of 87 nm in the absolute distance measurement test under the laboratory environment.

  • A comprehensive real-time spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) apparatus for characterizing femtosecond laser pulses is demonstrated. The SPIDER provides the temporal profiles of femtosecond laser pulses, reconstructed at the speed of 3.5 Hz, with parameters of the spectral phase such as group delay dispersion and third-order dispersion. The apparatus is applied successfully to optimize the spectral dispersion of a kHz femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser by adjusting a grating compressor in real time.

  • The fiber-optic interferometer which is a powerful application for nondestructive measurement techniques has many advantages such as capability of making portable system, easy optical arrangement, low optical loss. In spite of these advantages, this system has an environmental sensitivity of thermal drifts and vibrations. Against environmental perturbations and nonlinear characteristic of phase modulator, the accurate and fast ${\pi}/2$ phase stepping has been achieved by using zero-crossing detection. CCD camera trigger signal is generated at the 4 zero-crossing points. Our System has achieved up to 100 Hz of image capture speed and 0.6 mrad of accuracy of phase stepping, accuracy.

  • We propose a new method for improving the phase contrast of a multiphase digital holographic microscope using a spatial light modulator (SLM). Using the SLM as the annulus, our method improves the light contrast of the object edge to achieve higher accuracy. We demonstrate a digital holographic microscopy technique that provides a 30% improvement in the phase contrast compared to conventional microscopy, which utilizes a mechanical annulus. The phase-contrast improvement allows the 3D reconstructed hologram to be determined more precisely.
