Photorealistic Ray-traced Visualization Approach for the Interactive Biomimetic Design of Insect Compound Eyes

  • In this study, we propose a biomimetic optical structure design methodology for investigating micro-optical mechanisms associated with the compound eyes of insects. With these compound eyes, insects can respond fast while maintaining a wide field of view. Also, considerable research attention has been focused on the insect compound eyes to utilize these benefits. However, their nano micro-structures are complex and challenging to demonstrate in real applications. An effectively integrated design methodology is required considering the manufacturing difficulty. We show that photorealistic ray-traced visualization is an effective method for designing the biomimetic of a micro-compound eye of an insect. We analyze the image formation mechanism and create a three-dimensional computer-aided design model. Then, a ray-trace visualization is applied to observe the optical image formation. Finally, the segmented images are stitched together to generate an image with a wide-angle; the image is assessed for quality. The high structural similarity index (SSIM) value (approximately 0.84 to 0.89) of the stitched image proves that the proposed MATLAB-based image stitching algorithm performs effectively and comparably to the commercial software. The results may be employed for the understanding, researching, and design of advanced optical systems based on biological eyes and for other industrial applications.

Simulation of the Through-Focus Modulation Transfer Functions According to the Change of Spherical Aberration in Pseudophakic Eyes

  • To evaluate the effects of spherical aberration (SA) correction on optical quality in pseudophakic eyes, we simulated the optical quality of the human eye by computation of the modulation transfer function (MTF). We reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent cataract surgery in Asan Medical Center, retrospectively. A Zywave aberrometer was used to measure optical aberrations at 1-12 postoperative months in patients with AR40e intraocular lens implants. The MTF was calculated for a 5 mm pupil from measured wavefront aberrations. The area under the MTF curve (aMTF) was analyzed and the maximal aMTF was calculated while changing the SA ($-0.2{\sim}+0.2{\mu}m$) and the defocus (-2.0 ~ +2.0 D). Sixty-four eyes in 51 patients were examined. The maximal aMTF was $6.61{\pm}2.16$ at a defocus of $-0.25{\pm}0.66D$ with innate SA, and $7.64{\pm}2.63$ at a defocus of $0.08{\pm}0.53D$ when the SA was 0 (full correction of SA). With full SA correction, the aMTF increased in 47 eyes (73.4%; Group 1) and decreased in 17 eyes (26.6%; Group 2). There were statistically significant differences in Z(3, -1) (vertical coma; P = 0.01) and Z(4, 4) (tetrafoil; P = 0.04) between the groups. The maximal aMTF was obtained at an SA of $+0.01{\mu}m$ in Group 1 and an SA of $+0.13{\mu}m$ in Group 2. Optical quality can be improved by full correction of SA in most pseudophakic eyes. However, residual SA might provide benefits in eyes with significant radially asymmetric aberrations.

The Analysis of Optical Quality in Central Serous Chorioretinopathy by OQAS (OQAS를 이용한 중심장액성맥락망막병증의 광학적 질 분석)

  • Purpose: The present study was aimed to investigate the change of optical quality in fully cured eyes from central serous chorioretionopathy(CSC) and CSC under treatment, respectively. Methods: A total of 136 eyes(68 subjects) was divided into CMC under treatment and its asymptomatic contralateral eye, fully cured eyes after being diagnosed with CMC and its contralateral eye, and normal eyes. Objective scattering index, cut-off value in modulation transfer function, focusing rate, PSF(Point Spread Function) width at 50%, 10% and the contrast sensitivity were measured and analyzed. Results: CMC under treatment showed statistically significant decrease in all evaluations of optical quality compared with asymptomatic contralateral eyes, fully cured eyes and normal eyes. Although there was no significant difference in optical quality between asymptomatic contralateral eyes of CMC under treatment and fully cured eyes, there was tendence in optical quality decreasing compared with normal eyes. Conclusions: From the study, it was revealed that the optical quality was different according to the treatment phase in CMC. The use of optical quality assessment for the decision of complete cure and the evaluation of prognosis in CMC is also proposed.

Optical Models of the Finite Schematic Eyes for Presbyopia (노안을 위한 정밀 모형안 설계)

  • There is a need for a finite schematic presbyopic eye that models vision and image quality under various conditions such as cataract or refractive surgery, as well as near vision corrections with an ophthalmic lens or contact lens. Using recently measured biometric data of presbyopic eyes, new model eyes were designed that are optically and anatomically close to real eyes. The parameters changing significantly with age were incorporated into models for four different age groups. The new model eyes have alpha angle, decentered pupil, aspheric GRIN lens and aspheric retinal surface. It is likely that the new finite presbyopic model eyes will be useful for designing visual instruments such as low vision aids, PALs, IOL and contact lenses, and for the clinical prediction of the retinal image quality of a presbyopic patient.

Lens system design for head mounted display using schematic eyes (정밀모형안을 이용한 Head Mounted Display용 렌즈계 설계)

  • We discussed the design of lens module schematic eyes equivalent to finite model eyes, which are used to model the human eye based on spherical aberration and Stiles-Crowford effect. The optical system for head mounted display (HMD) is designed and evaluated using lens module schematic eyes. In addition to a compact HMD system, an optical system with high Performance is required. To satisfy these requirements, we used diffractive optical elements and aspheric surfaces so that the color and mono-chromatic aberrations were corrected. The optical system for HMD is composed of 0.47 inch micro-display of SVGA grade with 480,000 pixels, a plastic hybrid lens for the virtual image, and the lens module schematic eyes. The designed optical system fulfills the current specifications of HMD: such as, EFL of 31.25 mm, FOV of 24H$\times$18V$\times$30D degrees, and overall length of 59.1 mm. As a result, we could design an optical system useful for HMD; the system is expected to be comfortable while the user wears it.

  • For the studying of the optical property of the human eye by using the Seidel aberrations with schematic eyes, we have used the several paraxial and fine schematic eyes. In another world, after fixing the iris ot aperture pinhole on the anterior of lens, we investigated how the surface contributions and the surface asphericity affected the optical properties of schematic eyes by using the Seidel aberration coefficients variation. Also, by analysis of dividing both a relaxed state and the accommodation state of the eye, we investigated the change of the optical properties during the change of accommodation.

Clinical Evaluation between the Optical Center of Spectacles and Pupillary Center (안경광학중심과 동공중심의 일치에 관한 임상적 고찰)

  • This study was performed to survey the correspondence between the optical centers and pupillary centers in 224 eyes. The results were as follows: 1. The eye types were 136 eyes(60.7%) for myopic, 85 eyes(37.9%) for astigmatism, 3 eyes(1.4%) for hyperopic. 2. The horzontal prismatic effects of the 35 eyes (in ${\pm}0.25$ < $$D{\leq_-}{\pm}1.00$$) underpassed the aberration of tolerence of opthalmic dispensing in 34 eyes(97.1%). 3. The horzontal prismatic effects of the 167 eyes (in ${\pm}1.00$ < $$D{\leq_-}{\pm}6.00$$) underpassed the aberration of tolerence of opthalmic dispensing in 136 eyes(81.4%). 4. The horzontal prismatic effects of the 22 eyes (in ${\pm}6.00$ < $$D{\leq_-}{\pm}12.00$$) underpassed the aberration of tolerence of opthalmic dispensing in 12 eyes(54.5%).

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Chorioretinitis using Optical Coherence Tomography in a Dog (Optical Coherence Tomography를 이용한 원발성 맥락망막염 이환견의 진단 및 치료)

  • A 5-year-old intact male Yorkshire terrier dog was referred with a 1-week history of blindness. In both eyes, menace responses and pupillary light reflexes were absent. The indirect ophthalmoloscopy revealed multiple small gray-white and discoloration lesion in mid-nontapetum area in both eyes. Electroretinograms showed diminished amplitude of a- and b-waves. Multifocal serous retinal detachments were detected with optical coherence tomography (OCT) over the small gray-white and discoloration lesion in the fundus. After one week of treatments, the indirect ophthalmoloscopy showed that irregular patches and hyperpigmentation in the center of hyperreflectivity area. Reattachment and retinal thinning were observed by the OCT. The results indicate that OCT scanning is considered to be a useful method for retinal evaluation in dogs with chorioretinitis.

Predicting of Uncorrected Astigmatism from Decimal Visual Acuity in Spherical Equivalent

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the spherical equivalent visual acuity (VA) and uncorrected astigmatism. On 108 emmetropic eyes, the spherical equivalent VA was measured for cross cylindrical lens (CC lens)-induced astigmatic eyes and the VA-astigmatism relation determined. On 158 astigmatic eyes, the spherical equivalent VA and corrected astigmatism were measured and the measured values were compared with the calculated values from the VA-astigmatism relation by correlation coefficient analysis. Subsequent to that, the relationship between spherical equivalent VA and uncorrected astigmatism was made. The relationship was fitted for an exponential equation. Correlation coefficient between calculated values by equation and measured values for astigmatic eyes was 0.991 (p<0.01). The relationship between the spherical equivalent VA and the uncorrected astigmatism was decided as follows (spherical equivalent VA / uncorrected astigmatism): 1.0 / 0.25 D, 0.9 / 0.50 D, 0.8 / 0.75 D, 0.7 / 1.00 D, 0.6 / 1.25 D, 0.5 / 1.50 D, 0.4 / 2.00 D, 0.3 / 2.50 D, 0.2 / 3.00 D, 0.1 / 4.00 D, and 0.05 / 4.75 D. In conclusion, the relationship table devised from this study is a useful reference for predicting uncorrected astigmatism by measurement of decimal VA in spherical equivalent.
