광 NRZ 송신기의 전송 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Transmission Performance for Optical NRZ Transmitters)

  • 본 논문은 마크-젠더 변조기를 사용하여 광 신호를 생성하는 광 NRZ(nonreturn-to-zero) 송신기의 전송 특성을 이론적으로 분석하였다. 특히 단일 모드 광섬유를 통하여 분산 보상 방법 없이 1550nm 파장에서 25Gbps 광 NRZ 신호를 전송하고 그 성능을 chirp을 나타내는 ${\alpha}$-계수와 마크-젠더 변조기의 구동 전압비(=구동 전압/스위칭 전압)의 영향을 고려하여 평가하였다. 분산을 개선하기 위하여 음의 값을 가진 ${\alpha}$-계수를 사용하고 그 값들과 함께 구동 전압비의 크기를 적절히 조정하여 최적화된 상태에서 성능 개선을 시험하였다. 개선된 전송 성능은 비트 오류율(Bit Error Rate)과 광 아이 다이어그램으로 확인되었다.

  • 20 Gb/s 광 전송 시스템을 위한 광 송신기와 수신기를 전기적 시분할 다중 방식으로 제작하고 그 특성을 측정하였다. 특히 광 수신기의 핵심 회로인 클럭(19.906㎓) 추출 회로의 구현을 위해 반파장 지연 선로와 상용화된 EX-OR 소자를 이용한 NRZ-PRZ 변환기와 유전체 공진기를 이용한 협대역 대역통과 필터 및 마이크로스트립 대역통과 필터를 설계, 제작하였으며, 최종적으로 수신부에서 1:2로 역다중화된 10 Gb/s 신호의 비트 오율(BER)을 측정하였다. 제작된 송ㆍ수신기를 직접 연동하였을 때, 수신기의 수신 감도는 BER $1{\times}10^{-12}$에서 -26.2dBm을 나타내었다.

가시광 무선인식장치에서 가장자리 펄스변조를 이용한 플리커 방지 (Flicker Prevention Through Edge-Pulse Modulation in a Visible Light Identification System)

  • In this study, we applied edge-pulse modulation to prevent the flicker of light-emitting diode (LED) light in a visible light identification system. In the visible light transmitter, positive pulses were transmitted at the edges of the low-to-high transition points, and negative pulses were transmitted at the edges of the high-to-low transition points of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data waveforms. In the visible light receiver, the NRZ waveforms were regenerated by making low-to-high and high-to-low transitions at the point of the positive and negative pulses, respectively. This method has two advantages. First, it ensures that the LED light is flicker-free because the average optical power of the LED was kept constant during data transmission in the transmitter. Second, the 120 Hz optical noise from the adjacent lighting lamps was easily cut off using a simple RC-high pass filter in the receiver.

천이주파수 변조를 이용한 가시광통신의 조명제어 (Illumination Control in Visible Light Communication Using Transition Frequency Modulation)

  • In this study, we utilized the duty factor of the transition frequency modulation (TFM) for the illumination control of the light emitting diode (LED) light in visible light communication (VLC). The average optical power is linearly proportional to the duty factor in TFM waveforms. We used the transition frequencies of Na=5 and Nb=1 for the high and the low bits, respectively, of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data in the VLC transmitter. A resistor and capacitor high-pass filter (HPF) was used in the VLC receiver to eliminate the 120 Hz optical noise from adjacent lighting lamps and the spikes at the HPF output were used to recover NRZ data from the TFM waveform. In experiments, the illumination of the LED light was controlled in the range of 25-90% of the constant-wave optical power by changing the duty factor of the TFM waveforms.

Dimming Control of LED Light Using Pulse Frequency Modulation in Visible Light Communication

  • Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are modulated using a square wave pulse sequence for flicker prevention and dimming control in visible light communication (VLC). In a VLC transmitter, the high and low bits of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data are converted to two square waves of different frequencies, which continue for a finite time defined by the fill ratio in an NRZ bit time. As the average optical power was kept constant and independent of data transmission, the LED was flicker-free. Dimming control is carried out by changing the fill ratio of the square wave in the NRZ bit time. In the experiments, the illumination of the LED light was controlled in the range of approximately 19.2% to 96.2% of the continuous square wave modulated LED light. In the VLC receiver, a high-pass filter combined with a latch circuit was used to recover the transmitted signal while preventing noise interference from adjacent lighting lamps.

  • In long-haul high speed optical communications, the distance between a transmitter and a receiver depends on the amount of light coupled to a single mode optical fiber from the laser diode(LD) as well as the LD characteristic itself. And the transmitter module must have long lifetime. high reliability, and even simple structure. Such points have induced laser welding technique to be a first choice in opto-electronic module packaging because it can provide strong weld joint in a short time with very small coupling loss. In this paper, packaging considerations and characteristics for high speed LD modules are discussed. They include optical path design factors for larger aligning tolerance, and novel laser welding processes for component assembly. For low coupling loss after laser welding processes, the optical path for optimum coupling of a single mode optical fiber into the LD chip was designed with the GRIN lens system providing sufficiently large aligning tolerance both in the radial and axial directions. The measured sensitivity of the LD module was better than -33.7dBm(back to back) at a BER of $10^{-10}$ with a 2.5Gbps NRZ $2^{23}-1$ PRBS.

OOK변조된 가시광 데이터전송에서 바이트반전을 이용한 플리커 방지 (Flicker Prevention Using Byte-Inversion in OOK Modulated Visible Light Data Transmission)

  • 본 논문에서는 가시광을 사용하는 데이터 통신에서 광원의 플리커를 방지하기 위하여 On-off keying(OOK) 변조와 바이트반전 전송방식을 사용하였다. 송신부에서는 100 kHz의 구형파 전압을 부반송파로 사용하여 9.6 kbps의 기저대역 non-return-to-zero (NRZ) 입력데이터를 OOK 변조하고, 데이터의 비트열 형태에 관계없이 LED의 평균 광전력이 항상 일정하게 유지되도록 바이트반전 신호를 부가하여 전송하였다. 수신부에서는 대역통과 필터를 사용하여 주변의 120 Hz 잡음광의 간섭을 소거하고 OOK복조기를 사용하여 NRZ 형태의 원 신호를 복구하였다. 이러한 구조는 가시광 램프의 조명을 이용하여 근거리의 무선데이터 네트워크를 구축하는 데에 유용하다.

  • 본 논문에서는 가시광 통신의 광원으로 사용되는 백색 LED (Light Emitting Diode)의 변조 대역폭 확장을 위해 송신단에 전치 등화기 회로를 설계하였다. 또한 청색 광 필터를 이용하여 백색 LED의 주파수 응답을 저해하는 황색 형광물질의 영향을 제거하였고 이로 인해 발생하는 신호 세기의 저하를 광학 설계를 통해 극복하였다. 이 시스템을 통해 백색 LED의 변조 대역폭을 결정하는 3 dB 대역폭을 3 MHz에서 25 MHz이상으로 향상 시켰으며 광학 설계를 통해 추가적인 신호 세기를 확보하여 전송 거리를 증가시켰다. 통신 성능 확인을 위해 LED에 NRZ-OOK (신호를 변조시켜 전송하여, APD (Avalanche Photo Diode)를 통하여 수신하였고 이를 CSA (Communication System Analyzer)와 RFSA (Radio Frequency Spectrum Analyzer)를 통해 분석하였다. 이를 통해 전치 등화기와 광학 설계를 이용하여 전송거리 4.5 m에서 30 Mbps, 1.5 m에서 50 Mbps의 신호 전송이 가능함을 실험적으로 검증하였다.

Turbulence-tolerant Manchester On-off Keying Transmission for Free-space Optical Communication

  • We propose a turbulence-tolerant Manchester on-off keying (M-OOK) transmission for free-space optical (FSO) communication. At the transmitter end, a M-OOK signal featuring a spectrum with low-frequency components absent is modulated and transmitted into a turbulent channel. At the receiver end, a low-pass filter (LPF) -based adaptive-threshold decision (ATD) with LPF-extracted channel-state information (CSI) and a high-pass filter (HPF)-based fixed-threshold decision (FTD) are employed to compensate for the effects of turbulence, owing to the low-frequency spectral characteristics of the turbulent channel. The performance of LPF-based ATD and HPF-based FTD are evaluated for various cutoff frequencies for the LPF and HPF. Besides, the proposed M-OOK transmission is compared to conventional non-return-to-zero OOK (NRZ-OOK) for different data rates. The proposed technique is verified in simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed M-OOK detection with optimized cutoff frequencies of LPF and HPF has better bit-error-rate (BER) performance compared to NRZ-OOK, and it is close to the theoretical ATD with the knowledge of precise CSI under various degrees of turbulence effects.

Demonstration of CSRZ Signal Generator Using Single-Stage Mach-Zehnder Modulator and Wideband CMOS Signal Mixer

  • In this paper, we demonstrate an electrically band-limited carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (EB-CSRZ) signal generator operating up to a 10 Gbps data rate comprising a single-stage Mach-Zehnder modulator and a wideband signal mixer. The wideband signal mixer comprises inverter stages, a mixing stage, and a gain amplifier. It is implemented by using a 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. Its transmission response shows a frequency range from DC to 6.4 GHz, and the isolation response between data and clock signals is about 21 dB at 6.4 GHz. Experimental results show optical spectral narrowing due to incorporating an electrical band-limiting filter and some waveform distortion due to bandwidth limitation by the filter. At 10 Gbps transmission, the chromatic dispersion tolerance of the EB-CSRZ signal is better than that of NRZ-modulated signal in single-mode fiber.
