  • This paper deals with the very interesting problem about the influence of piecewise smooth boundary conditions on the distribution of the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian in R$^3$. The asymptotic expansion of the trace of the wave operator (equation omitted) for small |t| and i=√-1, where (equation omitted) are the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian (equation omitted) in the (x$^1$, x$^2$, x$^3$)-space, is studied for an annular vibrating membrane $\Omega$ in R$^3$together with its smooth inner boundary surface S$_1$and its smooth outer boundary surface S$_2$. In the present paper, a finite number of Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions on the piecewise smooth components (equation omitted)(i = 1,...,m) of S$_1$and on the piecewise smooth components (equation omitted)(i = m +1,...,n) of S$_2$such that S$_1$= (equation omitted) and S$_2$= (equation omitted) are considered. The basic problem is to extract information on the geometry of the annular vibrating membrane $\Omega$ from complete knowledge of its eigenvalues by analysing the asymptotic expansions of the spectral function (equation omitted) for small |t|.

  • Restricted by time and space, formal environmental education has a limit in accommodating fast changing socal phenomena and quickly spreading environmental problems. Therefore, to carry out more efficiently the environmental education for middle and high school students, this study is intended to search for a way to establish a network of formal and nonformal environmental education. More than 80% of civil environmental organizations replied they agree to establish a network of environmental education. As for the establishment of a network, they preferred the establishment in which middle and high school, civil environmental organizations, government, the environment-related departments of the universities. They preferred ‘civil environmental organizations’ for the operator, ‘local municipal or provincial level for the scale, ‘direct personal relations’ for the interchange method. To establish a network, they replied that ‘funding’, ‘specialists in environmental education’, ‘staff to proceed educations’, ‘reform of law and systems’ are required. They also preferred ‘funding from government budget’ for a way to fund a network. We can draw the following conclusions from the survey, We need a training program for environmental education staff not to make those educational programs by civil environmental organizations temporary Also, more studies should be done to establish more organized network of environmental education and nonformal environmental education by civil environmental organizations. Environmental problem varies depending on the local characteristics, and thus environmental education should be carried out locally at the network center for environmental education. Besides, local self-governing bodies should support it administratively and financially.

  • Seoulmetro has operated the air cooling equipment for 57 stations to improve services focused on our customers who use Seoulmetro during the summer season and has established every year. However, a new set of problems has arisen with the cooling tower to support a heat exchange of cooling water. The most important matter is loss of efficiency in the cooling tower. The leading cause of this problem is that we use an indoor type. As the cooling tower room is located in the underground of the city because of the residents near the station. Therefore It is difficult to establish the cooling tower on the ground. But it is unsuitable for the location requirements of the underground type because it has a limited space to set up the air cooling equipment, for example, the cooling tower and a ventilating opening. As a result of such an unfavorable condition, the cooling tower doesn't work efficiently and the warmth of cooling water because of insufficiency of a heat exchange and a refrigerator's technical obstacle such as a high-temperature and a high-pressure has arisen. To prevent this situation, the operator tend to reduce refrigerant. Accordingly, the efficiency of the air conditioning is getting lower and lower. Study wishes to analyze the matter to improve indoor cooling tower efficiency and recommend a best practice for a person who manage the establishment.

  • The choice of an effective indexing method is crucial to guarantee the performance of the spatial join operator which is heavily used in geographical information systems. The $R^*$-tree based method is renowned as one of the most representative indexing methods. In this paper, we propose an efficient spatial join technique based on the DOT(Double Transformation) index, and compare it with the spatial Join technique based on the $R^*$-tree index. The DOT index transforms the MBR of an spatial object into a single numeric value using a space filling curve, and builds the $B^+$-tree from a set of numeric values transformed as such. The DOT index is possible to be employed as a primary index for spatial objects. The proposed spatial join technique exploits the regularities in the moving patterns of space filling curves to divide a query region into a set of maximal sub-regions within which space filling curves traverse without interruption. Such division reduces the number of spatial transformations required to perform the spatial join and thus improves the performance of join processing. The experiments with the data sets of various distributions and sizes revealed that the proposed join technique is up to three times faster than the spatial join method based on the $R^*$-tree index.

  • The Chicago Convention and Annexes have become the basis of aviation safety regulations for every contracting state. Generally, aviation safety regulations refer to the SARPs provided in the Annexes of the Chicago Convention. In order to properly reflect international aviation safety regulations, constant studies of the aviation fields are of paramount importance. Treaties duly concluded and promulgated under the Constitution and the generally recognized rules of international law shall have the same effect as the domestic laws of the Republic of Korea. Each contracting state to the Chicago Convention should meet ICAO SARPs about AOC and FAOC. According to ICAO SARPs, Civil Aviation Authorities shall issue AOC to air carriers of the state, but don't require to issue for foreign air carrier. However some contracting states of the Chicago Convention issue FAOC and/or Operations Specifications for the foreign operators. This FAOC is being expanded from USA to the other contracting states. Foreign operators have doubly burden to implement AOC of the ICAO SARPs because FAOC is an additional requirement other than that prescribed by the ICAO SARPs In Article 33, the Chicago Convention stipulates that each contracting state shall recognize the validity of the certificates of airworthiness and licenses issued by other contracting states as long as they are equal to or above the minimum standards of the ICAO. In ICAO Annex 6, each contracting state shall recognize as valid an air operator certificate issued by another contracting state, provided that the requirements under which the certificate was issued are at least equal to the applicable Standards specified in this Annex. States shall establish a programme with procedures for the surveillance of operations in their territory by a foreign operator and for taking appropriate action when necessary to preserve safety. Consequently, it is submitted that the unilateral action of the states issuing the FAOC to the foreign air carriers of other states is against the Convention. Hence, I make some proposals on the FAOC as an example of comprehensive problem solving after comparative study with ICAO SARPs and the contracting state's regulations. Some issues must be improved and I have made amendment proposals to meet ICAO SARPs and to strengthen aviation development. Operators should be approved by FAOC at most 190 if all states require FAOC. Hence, it is highly recommended to eliminate the FAOC or reduce the restrictions it imposes. In certain compliance-related issues, delayed process shall not be permitted to flight operations. In addition, it is necessary for the ICAO to provide more unified and standardized guidelines in order to avoid confusion or bias regarding the arbitrary expansion of the FAOC. For all the issue mentioned above, I have studied the ICAO SARPs and some state's regulation regarding FAOC, and suggested some proposals on the FAOC as an example of comprehensive problem solving. I hope that this paper is 1) to help understanding about the international issue, 2) to help the improvement of korean aviation regulations, 3) to help compliance with international standards and to contribute to the promotion of aviation safety, in addition.

  • Because of the continuous increase in the demand for and importance of marine space, marine exploration and survey activities are being actively conducted in Korea actively. Because the marine survey vessels used for these activities have special operational patterns depending on the purpose and probe vessels, research on maritime traffic risk is required. In this study, an attempt was made to determine the correlation of each factor with the effect of marine exploration and survey vessel operation on maritime traffic. The status of ocean exploration and survey vessels in operation in Korea was identified, as well as the special operational conditions of some of the ocean physical probes. Generally, the number of exploration and survey vessels involved per hour, total vessel length(including exploration equipment), operation, interval distance of exploration as per plan, and marine traffic conditions(traffic volume and speed) can be classified as operating factors. To compare the results of the environmental stress, a maritime traffic flow simulation based on the "ES" Model was performed with each of the identified operating factors as independent variables. The results of the analysis confirmed that the environmental stress significantly changed in the order of traffic volume, ship length and speed. In addition, it was confirmed that the environmental stress is reduced when the operation course is set at an angle with the nearby maritime traffic flow. Accordingly, it can help reduce the operator's burden if the survey vessel operator understands nearby maritime traffic conditions and reflects them in the operation method when setting the operation plan.

  • Recently, 3D GIS based on 3D geo-processing methodology and Internet environment are emerging issues in GIS fields. To design and implement 3D GIS, the strategic linkage of Java and VRML is first regarded: 3D feature format definition in the passion of conventional GIS including aspatial attributes, 3B feature indexing, 3D analytical operators such as selection, buffering, and Near, Metric operation such as distance measurement and statistical description, and 3D visualization. In 3D feature format definition, the following aspects are implemented: spatial information for 3D primitives extended from 2D primitives, multimedia data, object texture or color of VRML specification. DXF-format GIS layers with additional attributes are converted to 3D feature format and imported into this system. While, 3D analytical operators are realized in the form of 3D buffering with respect to user-defined point, line, polygon, and 3D objects, and 3D Near functions; furthermore, 'Lantern operator' is newly introduced in this 3D GIS. Because this system is implemented by Java applet, any client with Java-enable browser including VRML browser plug-in can utilize the new style of 3D GIS function in the virtual space. Conclusively, we present prototype of WWW-based 3D GIS, and this approach will be contribute to development of core modules on the stage of concept establishment and of real application model in future.

  • This paper is to review a literature concerning Bus Transit Route Network Design(BTRNDP), to describe a future study direction for a systematic application for the BTRNDP. Since a bus transit uses a fixed route, schedule, stop, therefore an approach methodology is different from that of auto network design problem. An approach methodology for BTRNDP is classified by 8 categories: manual & guideline, market analysis, system analytic model. heuristic model. hybrid model. experienced-based model. simulation-based model. mathematical optimization model. In most previous BTRNDP, objective function is to minimize user and operator costs, and constraints on the total operator cost, fleet size and service frequency are common to several previous approach. Transit trip assignment mostly use multi-path trip assignment. Since the search for optimal solution from a large search space of BTRNDP made up by all possible solutions, the mixed combinatorial problem are usually NP-hard. Therefore, previous researches for the BTRNDP use a sequential design process, which is composed of several design steps as follows: the generation of a candidate route set, the route analysis and evaluation process, the selection process of a optimal route set Future study will focus on a development of detailed OD trip table based on bus stop, systematic transit route network evaluation model. updated transit trip assignment technique and advanced solution search algorithm for BTRNDP.

  • The air abrasive technique is a non-mechanical method by which teeth are treated before restoration and stains and calculi are removed from tooth surfaces using the kinetic energy of small particles. The air abrasive technique in dentistry was first introduced in the 1950's with as instrument called 'Airdent'. But, as the main restorative materials of the period were amalgam and gold, and the instrument's inability to control the flow of particles caused the particles to be spread throughout the clinics, widespread use was not possible. In the 1990's, as these techincal problems were solved and more interest in new restorative materials rose in an effort to preserve sound tooth structure, new developements took place in instruments related to the air abrasive technique. The air abrasive technique produces less pressure, vibration and heat that might cause patient discomfort and facilitates the preservation of sound tooth structure. It also reduces the need for anesthesia and is less harmful to the pulp. Other advantages include increase in dentin bonding strength of composite resin, lower possibility of saliva contamination and maintenance of a dry field. But there is not direct contact between the nozzle and the tooth, the operator cannot use his or her tactile sense and must rely solely upon visual input. Other disadvantages are: the tooth preparation depends on the operator's ability; alpha-alumina particles, after bouncing off the tooth surface, cause damage to dental mirrors; the equipment is expensive and takes up a certain amount of space in the clinic. The author conducted case report using the air abrasive technique on patient visiting the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Seoul National University Dental Hospital and arrived at the following conclusions. 1. The tooth preparation capability of different air abrasive devices varied widely among manufacturers. 2. It was more effective in treating early caries lesions and stains compared to lesions where caries had already progressed to produce soft dentin. 3. The cold stream and noise caused by the evacuation system was a major cause of discomfort to pediatric patients. 4. As there is no direct contact with tooth surface when using the air abrasive technique for tooth preparation, considerable experience and skill is required for proper tooth preparation.
