  • Many papers have used a two-stage approach of first calculating DEA efficiency scores and then seeking to correlate these scores with various environmental variables. Most of the studies have not checked whether such a two-stage approach is statistically valid for identifying significant environmental variables. Recently Simar and Wilson (2007) (SW) introduce a sensible data generating process and bootstrap procedure based on truncated regression for the two-stage approach. Banker and Natarajan (2008) (BN) provide a statistical foundation for the two-stage approach comprising a DEA followed by an ordinary least squares or maximum likelihood estimation. Researchers have to identify an approach suitable for their research circumstances in terms of properties, merits, demerits, and robustness to plausible departures from its chosen data generating process. We summarize the foundations and properties of the two-stage procedures suggested by SW and BN. And we discuss merits and demerits of those procedures. Also using Monte Carlo simulation we assess their relative performance under several misspecified settings.

  • This paper developed 3 flow-shop sequencing heuristic methods: modified RA method, modified RACS method and modified RAES method. These methods modified RA method, RACS method and RAES method developed by D. G. Dannenbring. These methods can easily determine desirable sequence of orders and can improve nx3 flow-shop's productivity and efficiency. The maximum flow-time criterion is selected as the evaluation criterion of flow-shop's efficiency, We evaluated these 6 heuristic methods’ performance. By the evaluation of the result, we can see that the modified methods produce a shorter maximum flow-time than the original methods.

  • Recently, linear compressors of cooling systems such as refrigerators, which have a free piston driven by a linear motor, have attracted much attention because of their high efficiency. For structural reasons, linear compressors applied in refrigerators should use an AC capacitor to ensure stable control. However, AC capacitors are expensive and bulky. In this paper, we propose a new method to realize stable control without a real AC capacitor by implementing a virtual AC capacitor with software. To realize a virtual AC capacitor, a pure integral is calculated. Nonetheless, if an offset current exists, the calculation may diverge to infinity. To solve this problem, a high-pass filter is applied and the compensation for the phase angle and magnitude are realized with a new method. Finally, a virtual AC capacitor enables variable frequency operations. Hence, in case of a lack of voltage, we can compensate by running the linear compressor in high-frequency operations. To improve efficiency, we may optimize the operation frequency. The validity of a virtual AC capacitor has been verified through simulations and experimental results.

  • Studies on quantity discounts have been in two directions since Buchanen[1] published that suppliers provide quantity discounts for price discrimination and for channel efficiency. The quantity discounts for price discrimination have been treated in economics. On the contrary, the quantity discounts for channel efficiency have been studied in production management with assumptions and focuses different from economics. In this paper, the differences in each area are analyzed and purchasing situations that supplier's motivation on quantity discounts occurs is analyzed and the purchasing situations for two-stage quantity discounts are specified. In conclusion, we suggest that suppliers can enhance channel coordination through two stage quantity discounts in these purchasing situations.

  • During the whole product design and development processes, the concurrent engineering relies on strong and permanent interactions between the departmental functions. Concurrent or simultaneous engineering in new product development is a new concept which needs to be redefined. This paper deals with a concurrent engineering model which represents how concurrency, as an organizational process, is related to a interfunctional project team. Four dimensions shaping the sucess of the concurrent engineering are suggested with detailed meausrement instruments. Moreover, an empirical study on the effects of the four dimensions on the efficiency of the product development processes is carried out in the field of electronic industries.

  • We investigate various methods of the Benders decoposition algorithm in its application to the simple plant location problem. We developed six variants. The master problem may be relaxed as an LP problem up to an appropriate point in time, or need not be solved to the optimality before a cut is added. Furthermore, since the subproblem is highly degenerated, we can generate more than one cuts at a time. The efficiency of the methods are examined using a sample problem. The result showed that the adding two-cut method was superior to the standard method. The LP relaxation and the non-optimization of the master program greatly improved the efficiency. Applying the LP relaxation method, we were able to reduce the computing time by two thirds of the time required by the standard method.

  • Developing an interactive satellite multimedia system, such as a digital video broadcasting (DVB) return channel via satellite (RCS) system, is gaining popularity over the world To accommodate the increasing traffic demand we are motivated to investigate an alternative for improving return channel utilization We develop an efficient method for optimal packet scheduling in an interactive satellite multimedia system using hybrid CDMA/TDMA channels. We formulate the timeslot-code assignment problem as a binary integer programming (BIP) problem, where the throughput maximization is the objective, and decompose this BIP problem into two sub-problems for the purpose of solution efficiency. With this decomposition, we promote the computational efficiency in finding the optimal solution of the original BIP problem Since 2001, ETRI has been involved in a development project where we have successfully completed an initial system integration test on broadband mobile Internet access via Ku-band channels using the proposed resource allocation algorithm.

  • Many years ago, most of thermal power plants built in this country were of subcritical pressure, of medium or small size, of constant pressure operations and of drum type steam generators with circulation type boilers. But, nowadays almost all of them were of high efficiency, of supercritical pressure, of big capacity, of sliding pressure operations, and of once through type steam generators. Presently built once through boilers introduce turbine bypass systems to variable pressure operation which eliminates unexpected materials in boiler tube during startup, minimizes fuel loss by short startup period and eventually improve both total efficiency and power system stability.

  • The existing DEA models have been devoted to evaluate relative efficiency of DMUs based on multiple input and output factors of a same period. However, a certain kind of lead time can be required to produce outputs using inputs in an organization. R&D evaluation is a typical area with this kinds of time lag. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to develop a new DEA model to deal with time lag effect in performance evaluation. The proposed model is to find relative efficiency of each DMU for each period considering the time lag effect. A case example using a real data set is also given to show the usage or implication of the suggested model. The results are compared with the ones of the CCR model and the multi-periods input model.

  • This paper presents an overview of ONP deinking efficiency with cellulolytic enzymes and synthetic collector in alkaline pH. Deinking is a series of unit operations designed to detach ink from cellulose fibers and separate the dispersed ink from the pulp slurry. Deinking chemicals are process aids that enable expensive mill equipment used in these unit operations to operate more efficiently - often much more efficiently. We propose the blended deinking agent with cellulolutic enzymes and synthetic collector in deinking pulp of conventional alkaline method. The deinking efficiency of old news print in alkaline pH was enhanced with enzyme treatments. The brightness of deinked pulp was increased with less residual ink particles and yield of enzymatic deinked pulp was improved compared to the deinked pulp of conventional alkaline method.
