Site suitability for conifer plantation and a new challenge to utilize deciduous trees

  • Degraded plantation forests are increasing because of unfavorable forestry conditions prevailing in Japan, including falling timber prices, increasing operational costs, and aging and declining forestry workforce. To remedy this situation, appropriate management strategy is required. This study introduces the challenges of Odai Town, Mie Prefecture that employed a new management strategy by evaluating site suitability for conifer forests and that proposes a new forest management regime of planting deciduous trees in unsuitable sites. The site suitability for conifer forests was evaluated from two aspects: the natural site conditions and the relationship among site conditions, growth, and damage by Anaglyptus subfasciatus Pic. in Cryptomeria japonica D. Don and Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. Et Zucc. forests. By analyzing the relationship among site conditions, growth, and insect damage based on field data obtained in plantation forests, growth evaluation and insect damage evaluation maps were developed. Based on the natural forest investigation, natural site condition maps for C. japonica and C. obtusa were established. Furthermore, by integrating these evaluation maps with the forest road maps showing the accessibility to the forest, the forest management regime for the whole plantation area of Odai Town was established. The forest management regime map indicates the sites suitable for forestry: suitable for long-rotation, short-rotation, and potential sites for short-rotation. The sites unsuitable for forestry were considered to be more suitable for broadleaved forests. Clear-cutting was conducted in a small area and different seral stage saplings (approximately 20 deciduous tree species) suitable to the site conditions were planted in an area of $80-120m^2$ protected by deer-fences. This might establish a forest composed of many species with a multilayer vertical forest structure in a short period. The planted saplings were distributed neither randomly nor uniformly to reflect the natural distribution of trees in the forest. A challenge to develop new products using the deciduous trees has started, such as wood chips for preparing smoked food, essential oil, and deodorizer. As these challenges have just begun, their effects on enhancing sustainable resource management are still being monitored. Even with the challenges, this regime can be of high value as a management strategy to remedy the situation of expansion of degraded forests in Japan.

Hub-and-spoke 운송전략을 고려한 철도화물서비스 네트워크디자인모형의 개발 (A Service Network Design Model for Rail Freight Transportation with Hub-and-spoke Strategy)

  • Hub-and-spoke운송은 교통분야에서 널리 이용되고 있는 운송전략의 대표적 개념이다. 화물의 컨테이너화와 환적기술의 발달로 최근 유럽을 중심으로 철도화물운송부문에서도 이 운송전략의 적용사례가 나타나고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 Hub-and-spoke운송전략을 구현하는 철도화물서비스네트워크 디자인모형을 제시하고, 대규모 운송망에도 적용이 가능한 효율적 알고리즘을 개발하였다. 개발되는 모형이 전략적 수준의 계획모형임에도 불구하고 모형에서는 일반화된 운영비용 외에 열차속도, 서비스빈도, 터미널에서의 화물처리속도 등에 따른 시간지체비용도 고려되었다. 시간지체비용의 고려에 따라 야기되는 목적함수의 비선형성은 빈도별 서비스결정변수의 설정을 통해 선형최적화문제로 표현되었다. 규모가 큰 네트워크의 경우 해도출의 어려움 때문에 본 논문은 전체문제의 분할(decomposition)에 기초한 휴리스틱방법((heuristic method)으로 문제를 해결하고자 하였다. 해도출의 효율성을 높이기 위해 서비스빈도개선과 관련하여 3개의 알고리즘이 개발되었고, 개발된 알고리즘은 유럽의 실제네트워크를 기초로 도출한 4개의 테스트문제를 대상으로 해의 정확도와 해 도출의 효율성이 비교 평가되었다.

PC Cluster based Parallel Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm for Service Restoration of Distribution Systems

  • This paper presents an application of the parallel Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm (AEA) to search an optimal solution of the service restoration in electric power distribution systems, which is a discrete optimization problem. The main objective of service restoration is, when a fault or overload occurs, to restore as much load as possible by transferring the de-energized load in the out of service area via network reconfiguration to the appropriate adjacent feeders at minimum operational cost without violating operating constraints. This problem has many constraints and it is very difficult to find the optimal solution because of its numerous local minima. In this investigation, a parallel AEA was developed for the service restoration of the distribution systems. In parallel AEA, a genetic algorithm (GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner are used in order to combine the merits of two different evolutionary algorithms: the global search capability of the GA and the local search capability of the ES. In the reproduction procedure, proportions of the population by GA and ES are adaptively modulated according to the fitness. After AEA operations, the best solutions of AEA processors are transferred to the neighboring processors. For parallel computing, a PC cluster system consisting of 8 PCs was developed. Each PC employs the 2 GHz Pentium IV CPU and is connected with others through switch based fast Ethernet. To show the validity of the proposed method, the developed algorithm has been tested with a practical distribution system in Korea. From the simulation results, the proposed method found the optimal service restoration strategy. The obtained results were the same as that of the explicit exhaustive search method. Also, it is found that the proposed algorithm is efficient and robust for service restoration of distribution systems in terms of solution quality, speedup, efficiency, and computation time.

Resolving Memory Bottlenecks in Hardware Accelerators with Data Prefetch

  • 최근 다양한 분야에서 딥러닝이 사용되면서, 더 빠르고 정확한 결과를 내는 딥러닝이 더욱 중요해졌다. 이를 위해서는 많은 양의 저장 공간이 필요하고, 대용량 연산을 진행해야 한다. 이에 따라 여러 연구는 빠르고 정확하게 연산 처리가 가능한 하드웨어 가속기를 이용한다. 하지만 하드웨어 가속기는 CPU와 하드웨어 사이를 이동하면서 병목현상이 발생하게 된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 하드웨어 가속기의 병목현상을 효율적으로 줄일 수 있는 데이터 프리패치 전략을 제안한다. 데이터 프리패치 전략의 핵심 아이디어는 Matrix Multiplication Unit(MMU)가 연산을 진행하는 동안 다음 연산에 필요한 데이터를 예측하여 로컬 메모리로 올려 병목현상을 줄인다. 또한, 이 전략은 듀얼 버퍼를 이용하여 읽고 쓰는 두 가지 동작을 동시에 진행하여 처리율을 높인다. 이를 통해 데이터 전송의 지연시간 및 실행 시간을 감소시킨다. 시뮬레이션을 통해 듀얼 버퍼를 이용한 병렬 프로세싱과 데이터 프리패치를 이용한 메모리 간 병목현상을 최대한 감소시켜 하드웨어 가속기의 성능이 24% 향상함을 알 수 있다.

미(美) 해군 수상함부대 전략 평가 및 한국 해군에게 주는 시사점 (The Analysis of the U.S. Navy Surface Forces Strategy and the implications to Republic of Korea Navy)

  • After finishing Cold War, the U.S. Navy's ability to Sea control has been gradually eroded last 15-20 years. The global security environment demands that the surface Navy rededicate itself to sea control, as a new group of potential adversaries is working to deny U.S. navy command of the sea. China has been increasing their sea denial capability, such as extended anti-surface cruise missile and anti-surface ballistic missile. To cope with this situation, the U.S. Naval Surface Forces Command has announced Surface Forces Strategy: Return to Sea Control. It is a new operating and organizing concept for the U.S. surface fleet called 'distributed lethality'. Under distributed lethality, offensive weapons such as new ASCMs are to be distributed more widely across all types of Navy surface ships, and new operational concept for Navy surface fleet's capability for attacking enemy ships and make it less possible for an enemy to cripple the U.S. fleet by concentrating its attack on a few very high-value Navy surface ships. By increasing the lethality of the surface ships and distributing them across wide areas, the Navy forces potential adversaries to not only consider the threat from our carrier-based aircraft and submarines, but they now consider the threat form all of those surface ships. This idea of using the distributed lethality template to generate surface action groups and adaptive force package and to start thinking about to increase the lethal efficacy of these ships. The U.S. Navy believes distributed lethality increases the Navy's sea control capability and expands U.S. conventional deterrence. Funding new weapons and renovated operating concept to field a more lethal and distributed force will enable us to establish sea control, even in contested area. The U.S. Navy's Surface Forces Strategy provides some useful implications for The ROK Navy. First the ROK Navy need to reconsider sea control mission. securing sea control and exploiting sea control are in a close connection. However, recently the ROK Navy only focuses on exploiting sea control, for instance land attack mission. the ROK Navy is required to reinvigorate sea control mission, such as anti-surface warfare and anti-air warfare. Second, the ROK Navy must seek the way to improve its warfighting capability. It can be achieved by developing high-edge weapons and designing renewed operating concept and embraced new weapon's extended capabilities.

영광3, 4호기 비상운전지침용 원자로냉각재펌프 정지전략을 위한 소형냉각재상실사고 분석 (Small Break LOCA Analysis for RCP Trip Strategy for YGN 3&4 Emergency Procedure Guidelines)

  • 소형냉각재 상실사고시 원자로냉각재펌프( RCP )의 지속적인 운전은 원자로냉각재의 불필요한 누출을 초래하여 심각한 노심노출 및 이에따른 핵연료 손상을 야기시킬 수 있다. TMI 사고 후 미국 NRC의 요구에 따라 CE형 발전소 사용자 단체에서는 “T2/L2”라는 RCP 트립전략을 개발하여 CE형 발전소에 적용 가능토록 일반비상운전지침서에 반영하였다. 상기 T2/L2 RCP 트립전략은 사고후 원자로 냉각재 계통의 압력이 감소하여 RCP 트립설정치에 도달하면 처음 두대의 RCP를 우선 정지시키고, 사고가 LOCA임이 확인되면 나머지 두대의 RCP를 정지시키는 방식을 채택하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 영광3, 4호기의 RCP 트립설정치를 분석, 선정하고 T2/L2 전략의 안전운전양상을 입증하였다 분석결과, 최악의 파단크기로 밝혀진 0.15 ft$^2$의 고온관 파단 LOCA 영광3, 4호기 RCP 트립설정치는 가압기 압력 1775 psia로 나타났으며, 운전원이 마지막 두대의 RCP를 트립시키지 못하였을 경우 혹은 최악의 시점에서 정지시켰을 경우에도 영광3, 4호기의 노심냉각능력은 확보될 수 있음이 확인되었다. 또한 영광3, 4호기의 RCP 트립전략은 미국 NRC가 요구하는 최대 핵연료피복재온도 관점에서의 10 CFR 50.46 요구조건과 운전원 조치시간 관점에서의 ANSI 58.8 요구조건도 충분히 만족함이 판명되었다 따라서, 1775 psia의 RCP 트립설정치를 사용한 영광3, 4호기의 T2/L2 RCP 트립전략은 사고시 운전원에게 향상된 운전지침을 제공할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • Logistics in a supply chain network has become an important operational strategy in a competitive market. A number of internal and external risks involved in the logistics operations in a company tend to create problems in fulfilling customer orders. This research presents how ERM (enterprise risk management) can be used to identify, assess, and control logistics risks. An electronic company's logistics activities were used as an industry case to demonstrate a way to identify and assess risks surrounding global logistics function. This paper has further presented action plans to mitigate the impact of the risks that occur.

Second, the reliability and value-added operating system built for the creation of high-tech rail. Third, crime and accidents are implemented in a safe railway. The results of this paper, the railway sector through the national Intelligent Transportation Systems to develop and introduce strategies to provide operational direction is expected to be present.

  • This paper presents case studies on database Quality uSing an extended database Quality model developed by Korea Database Promotion Center, which shall be called KDPC2003. The model is applied to evaluate two kinds of databases ; one is an operational database, the other is an information service database. The purpose of this research is two-folded. One is to evaluate database quality and assess current status of database quality management; the other is to assess usefulness of KDPC2003 and to propose ideas for its augmentation. The findings in this study will provide basic facts to test database quality evaluation models.

To deduce various countermeasure, process that estimate and analyze occurrence possibility and expectation damage of risk is essential indispensable issue. Therefore, this paper studies process design that can presume risk occurrence frequency and damage scale through distribution of probability.
