  • This study presents the analysis of relationship between ship speed and local ice load on the Korean Icebreaker ARAON. The relationship curves were made from the data obtained at two areas: the Arctic and the Antarctic; and for two operation condition: the icebreaking condition in sea ice trial and general operation in ice covered sea. The strain data were converted to the equivalent stress value, and the influence of ship speed on the local ice load was analyzed and compared each other. These analysis results are useful in working on a statistically valid hull design approach.

  • This paper presents the structural performance monitoring of an urban footbridge located in Hangzhou, China. The structural health monitoring (SHM) system is designed and implemented for the footbridge to monitor the structural responses of the footbridge and to ensure the structural safety during the period of operation. The monitoring data of stress and displacement measured by the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors installed at the critical locations are used to analyze and assess the operation performance of the footbridge. A linear regression method is applied to separate the temperature effect from the stress monitoring data measured by the FBG-based strain sensors. In addition, the static vertical displacement of the footbridge measured by the FBG-based hydrostatic level gauges are presented and compared with the dynamic displacement remotely measured by a machine vision-based measurement system. Based on the examination of the monitored stress and displacement data, the structural safety evaluation is executed in combination with the defined condition index.

  • Normally, using coating material could result in different performance according to the various changes of environments or operation conditions. For these reasons, there are decreasing tendency for the durability, beauty and scenery of structures as the separation or exfoliation occurred after operation. Especially we must find out not only bond strength characteristics of coating material under temperature conditions but also bond strength reduction under heating-cooling repeat test because Korea has four distinct seasons. In this paper, the deformation and bond strength characteristics of coating material have been investigated. and we suggest some preliminary data of coating material for its best performance under various temperature condition.

  • A process sequence of multi-operation cold forging for actual application in industry is designed with the rigid-plastic finite element method to form a constant velocity joint housing(CVJ housing). The material flow during the CVJ housing forming is axisymmetric until the final forging process for forming of ball grooves. This study treats the deformation as an axisymmetric case. The main objective of the process sequence design is to obtain preforms which satisfy the design criteria of near-net-shape product requiring less machining after forming. The process sequence design also investigates velocity distributions, effective strain distributions and forging loads, which are useful information in the real process design.

  • A suitable packing material for biofiltration of monoaromatic solvent vapors was selected among various types of packing materials such as peat, bark chips, vermiculite, and Hydroballs. A previously isolated strain, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes BTXO2, which could utilize toluene, m-and p-xylene as carbon and energy sources was used as a biofilter inoculum. Four glass biofilters (6 cm dia. x 60 cm) were individually packed with each of the packing materials and solvent vapors were passed through the columns. During three weeks of peat biofilter operation, average removal efficiencies of toluene, m-and p-xylene were 90.4%, 95.3%, and 82.1%, respectively. With the other packings, the efficiencies were in the range of 10.1 to 58.6% which were significantly lower than those of the peat biofilter. The peat biofilter was continually operated for approximately nine months and the biofilter sustained its degradation activity during the operation period with minimal maintenance. At steady state, average removal rates of toluene, m- and p-xylene vapors were estimated as 14.2, 5.5, and 8.1 g m$\^$-3/ packing h$\^$-1/, respectively.

  • Production of acetic acid from cellulosic biomass by Simultaneous Saccharification and Extractive Fermentation (SSEF) was investigated. The homoacetate organism used in this study was a strain of Clostridium thermoaceticum, ATCC # 49707. A batch operation of Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation(SSF) using ${\alpha}$-cellulose at pH 5.5 and 55$^{\circ}C$ yielded 40% conversion of cellulose to acetic acid, while a fed-batch SSF operation produced a maximum acetic acid concentration of 25 g/L, with 50% overall yield. In-situ extractive fermentation to reduce the end-product inhibition on both bacteria and enzyme was carried out. in a batch SSEF using 200 g/L IRA-400 resin, acetic acid concentration reached to 23.9 g/L and acetic acid yield and productivity were observed to be 48% and 0.20 g/L-hr, respectively.

  • Meshfree approximations exhibit significant potential to solve partial differential equations. Meshfree methods have been successfully applied to various problems which the traditional finite element methods have difficulties to handle, including the quasi-static and dynamic fracture. large deformation problems, contact problems, and strain localization problems. A meshfree method based on the reproducing kernel particle approximation(RKPM) is applied to sheet metal forming analysis in this research. Metal forming examples, such as stretch forming and flanging operation, are analyzed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed meshfree method for largely deformed elasto-plastic material.

  • A new interface circuit for variable resistive sensors is proposed. The interface circuit compose of only two strain gages, a voltage-to-current converter, and current mirror with two outputs. A new dual slope A/D converter based on linear operational transconductance amplifier for the testing of prototype interface circuit is also described. The theory of operation is presented and experimental results are used to verify the theoretical predictions. The results show close agreement between predicted behaviour and experimental performance.

  • Spontaneous esophageal perforation occurred rarely but often lead to a high mortality and morbidity. We had experienced one case of spontaneous rupture of esophagus. A 52 - year old male patient was admitted to our hospital because of the chest pain and massive hematemesis after emetic strain. Esophagogram that taken at private clinic revealed leakage of dye into the right pleural space. Under the diagnosis of the thoracic esophageal perforation, two stage operation was planned because the size of perforation was large and pyothorax was developed on the right side. At first, exclusion and diversion of the esophagus were carried out. After six months, the esophageal reconstruction with left colon was performed.

  • Plastically deformed layer beneath metal surface machined by orthogonal cutting was evaluated in terms of residual stress, microvickers hardness, side spread, and the side strain. An attempt was made to predict the depth of layer according to machining conditions particularly tool geometry and the shear plane angle. In this paper, we employed two models concerning the sliplines. The exact model was validated by comparision of computed and measured tool force and its angle, and the model offers an upper boundary of the deformed layer to be in good agreement with the experiment.
