  • The electromechanical valve train (EMV) technology allows for a reduction in fuel consumption while operating under a stoichiometric air-fuel-ratio and preserves the ability to use conventional exhaust gas aftertreatment technology with a 3-way-catalyst. Compared with an engine with a camshaft-driven valve train, the variable valve timing concept makes possible an additional optimization of cold start, warm-up and transient operation. In contrast with the conventionally throttled engine, optimized control of load and in-cylinder gas movement can be used for each individual cylinder and engine cycle. A load control strategy using a "Late Intake Valve Open" (LIO) provides a reduction in start-up HC emissions of approximately 60%. Due to reduced wall-wetting, the LIO control strategy improves the transition from start to idle. "Late Exhaust Valve Open" (LEO) timing during the exhaust stroke leads to exhaust gas afterburning and, thereby, results in high exhaust gas temperatures and low HC emissions. Vehicle investigations have demonstrated an improved accuracy of the air-fuel-ratio during transient operation. Results in the New European Driving Cycle have confirmed a reduction in fuel consumption of more than 15% while meeting EURO IV emission limits.

  • The advance of All-IP digital convergence is now triggering fundamental changes in the media industry. This article analyzes the evolution of the media industry based on a value chain model, with a special emphasis placed on the impact of digital technology on the structure of media production, distribution, and consumption. As the Internet has evolved into an access channel for all forms of media, the boundaries of the media industry remain unclear and open thus enabling anyone to become a creator of media. Furthermore, the scope of media continues to become more dynamic as competition grows between older and more innovative forms of media. In this light, adapting to innovative technologies and more effectively meeting the needs of customers represent key factors for the continued evolution of the media.

  • Public participation in the Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) has been implemented since the August 1 of 1991 with the Environmental Policy Act promulgation in the August 1 of 1991. It is structured to comment on draft Environmental Impact Statement(EIS) through open reviewing, public meeting and hearing. Though public participation has an important role in determining environmental significance, it is room for improvement. With positive public participation and system development such as Environmental Impact Assessment Act on June 11 of 1993, the effectiveness of it will be improved. This article is composed of status of public participation, comparison with other countries, comparison analysis by items of EIS prepared before and after public participation, and contents of public opinions in EIS.

  • In the past, IUTOX engaged in dialogue with various international toxicology organizations to address this important issue. IUTOX Executive Committee engaged in activities that support accreditation and/or registration of toxicologists around the world. As a result of discussions held during the IUTOX-sponsored workshop at the 2000 Annual Meeting of the SOT in Philadelphia, it was decided to create an international forum, the "International Assembly for the Recognition of Toxicologists"(IART). The mission of IART was defined as threefold: 1) to establish a forum for development of criteria for recognizing qualified experts in toxicology; 2) to assist "recognizing organizations" in establishing these criteria; and 3) to promote identification and training needs to enhance expertise in toxicology. The membership of IART is open to all organizations (e.g., registries, boards, academies, etc.) whose purpose is the recognition of expertise in toxicology.rtise in toxicology.

  • "The FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System" is a comprehensive overhaul of U.S National Airspace System to make air travel more convenient and dependable, while ensuring the flight is as safe, secure and hassle-free as possible. At its most basic level, NextGen represents an evolution from a ground-based system of air traffic control to a satellite-based system of air traffic management. This evolution is vital to meeting future demand, and to avoiding gridlock in the sky and at U.S airports. NextGen will open worldwide's skies to continued growth and increased safety while reducing aviation's environmental impact.

  • While there are many successful cases where application of the TQM model has reaped substantial benefits (Corcoran, 1996; Hayday, 1996 and Massey, 1996), there is little attempt to further develop the TQM model to meet organisations' development needs. The purpose of this paper is introduce the process of development of a fit-for-purpose management system model to meet the development needs of the MTR Corporation Limited, a metro company of Hong Kong. The new management system model is formulated based on the previous research results, on TQM but comprises a new approach to bridging their pitfalls. The formulation of the TMS elements is based on the common factors of four National Quality Awards (Japan, USA, Europe and Australia) and the critical factors developed by seven studies. These studies include those of Saraph et al. (1989), Flynn et al. (1994), Anderson et al. (1995), Powell (1995), Handfield and Ghosh (1995), Black and Porter (1996), and Ahire et al. (1996).

  • The number of laparosocpic liver resection performed every years has been increasing. There is a trend than more major hepatectomy and complex liver resection is being reported. However there has been a major obstacles in many centers because open liver resection is still considered as a gold standard and many surgeons are still getting used to the old method of liver resection. To start a new procedure, education and training is essential in order to achieve a good outcome without compromising the safety of the patients. A gradual progression is crucial in order to avoid dreadful complication. The development of the consensus meeting and difficulty score has facility the understanding of safe practice in the development of laparoscopic liver resection. In a long run, development of registry system will improve transparency and safety of this operation.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the open adoption experience of adoptive families. For this purpose, the data were collected through diverse data collection methods including in-depth interviews with adoptive families who had experiences of open adoption and analyzed using a qualitative case study approach. Data collected from six adoptive families were employed for within-case analysis and cross-case analysis. Each case was carefully examined and summarized using story-telling style in the within-case analysis and major issues for open adoption appeared in each case were described and compared one by one. In the cross-case analysis, all the cases were re-examined keeping the issues appeared in the within-case analysis in mind and eight integrated themes were emerged from it. The eight integrated themes are 'the crucial meeting', 'a clear arrangement', 'an uneasy parallel', 'the other mom', 'who are the real parents?', 'the words never to say', 'the hidden characters', and 'the center of relations or the outsider'. Based on the results of the study, the policies and practical guidelines related to open adoption were suggested. Also, the suggestions for the further studies were made to obtain more abundant information beyond the limitations of the study.
