The conventional representative underground cavity restoration methods, which are mainly open-cut methods, require high cost and long period of time for the restoration. Therefore, various trenchless restoration methods have been proposed to improve these disadvantages. The underground cavity restoration method using the expansive material proposed in this paper is one of the trenchless methods. This method fills the underground cavity with high quality backfill soils through the small hole(s) at asphalt layer and compacts backfill soils by insertion of the expansive material within the cavity. In this study, the restoration method using expansive material was constructed in acrylic chamber. The restoration efficiency of the method was analyzed by the fill ratio and degree of relative compaction according to the location and number of bore holes. As a result of the experiment, the restoration efficiency and the optimum construction location were found to be irrelevant.

This paper is a study of an empirical design of an open-ended coaxial cavity resonator. It can be done by using the radius of the inner conductor, the inner radius and the length of the resonator. However, the basic coaxial transmission -line theory can be seen that the characteristics of the resonant frequency and the Q value are varied by the change of length, regardless of the value of radius of the inner conductor and inner radius of the resonator. We find out the impact of radius of the inner conductor, inner radius of the resonator and the length of the resonator parameter and propose the optimized empirical resonator design method by reducing the error between the theoretical value and the design value. Based on the simulation, several resonators are fabricated by the size of 14 mm for the radius of inner conductor, 2 mm, 5 mm, 10 mm respectively for the inner radius of resonator, and 8.5 mm for the length of the resonator. The resonant frequencies of the produced resonators were measured at 6.1, 5.7, 6.5 GHz respectively. According to the result of simulation and measurement, we know that we can design the relatively exact open-ended coaxial cavity resonator by applying the basic coaxial transmission-line theory directly when the length of the resonator is less than 10 mm, and adding the correction factor of 0.5 GHz to the calculated resonant frequency in case of more than 10 mm of the length of the resonator.

Investigations into cavity flows have been conducted for noise and vibration problems that arise in cavity systems. Cavity systems have been applied in engineering devices and have undergone rapid development in the aerospace industry. Meanwhile, to the author's best knowledge, the cavity on a curved wall has been seldom studied. The present work is conducted to study the flow physics of a cavity mounted on a curved wall. Numerical analysis is performed to investigate the cavity flow. Two variables of sub- and supersonic cavity flows were considered: the radius of curvature of the curved wall (L/R) and the inlet Mach number. The results show that the uniform vortex generated by the cavity flow on the curved wall stabilize the pressure fluctuation as time passes. As the inlet Mach number increases, the pressure fluctuation amplitude increases. The results obtained from the curved wall are compared with those from a straight wall using Rossiter's formula. The Strouhal number of the curved wall is lower than that of the straight wall. Lower Strouhal numbers have been obtained in the present computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results than in the theoretical results using Rossiter's formula.

This paper is a study of a rain sensor using an open-ended coaxial cavity resonator which senses the amount of rain drops linearly. It shows that it will be used as a sensor to sense the amount of rain dropped on the windshield of an automobile based on the principle of varied resonant frequency and the loss according to the amount and characteristics of an dielectric lied on the open side of a resonator. The input and output ports are built in the both sides of the resonator and the input and output coupling probes are formed like 'ㄱ' shape. The response of rain drops were simulated by the radius of inner conductor of 2 mm, 5 mm, and 10 mm respectively and it showed that the raindrop was sensed most linearly and sensitively when the radius of inner conductor is 5 mm, We have measured that the resonant frequency have varied from 3.55 GHz to 3 GHz and the Q value have varied from 42.38 to 24.3 according to the variation of rain drop amount on the fabricated resonator. Therefore, it shows that the designed resonator can be applied as a rain sensor that measures the amount of rain drops linearly by using the resonant frequency as a measurement parameter.
Flow-excited acoustic resonance in ducted cavities can produce high levels of acoustic pressure that may lead to severe damage. This occurs when the flow instability over the cavity mouth, which is created by the free shear layer separation at the upstream edge, is coupled with one of the acoustic modes in the accommodating enclosure. Acoustic resonance can cause high amplitude fluctuating acoustic loads in and near the cavity. Such acoustic loads could cause damage in sensitive applications such as aircraft weapon bays. Therefore, the suppression and mitigation of these resonances are very important. Much of the work done in the past focused on the fluid-dynamic oscillation mechanism or suppressing the resonance by altering the edge condition at the shear layer separation. However, the effect of the downstream edge has received much less attention. This paper considers the effect of the impingement edge geometry on the acoustic resonance excitation and Strouhal number values of the flow instabilities in a ducted shallow cavity with an aspect ratio of 1.0. Several edges, including chamfered edges with different angles and round edges with different radii, were investigated. In addition, some downstream edges that have never been studied before, such as saw-tooth edges, spanwise cylinders, higher and lower steps, and straight and delta spoilers, are investigated. The experiments are conducted in an open-loop wind tunnel that can generate flows with a Mach number up to 0.45. The study shows that when some edge geometries, such as lower steps, chamfered, round, and saw-tooth edges, are installed downstream, they demonstrate a promising reduction in the acoustic resonance. On the other hand, higher steps and straight spoilers resulted in intensifying the acoustic resonance. In addition, the effect of edge geometry on the Strouhal number is presented.

A hull-form for a 32,000G/T class Ro-Pax ferry has developed in accordance with a need of ferry operators to reduce fuel oil consumption(FOC) due to the drastic increase in oil prices recently and strengthening of environmental rules and regulations such as CO2 emission. A twin-skeg type is applied as the hull-form in lieu of an open-shaft type in order to improve propulsion performance. In order to achieve this object, flow control devices are installed to reduce a propeller induced vibration which is a main reason to obstruct the application of twin-skeg type passenger vessels owing to an uncomfortable vibration level. Numerical simulation by using an in-house code and a commercial code (Fluent) has performed to find out an optimum design of the flow control devices and to check an improvement in cavity volume. Model tests in Samsung Ship Model Basin are carried out to evaluate propulsion performance with the developed twin-skeg type hull and a reference hull of open-shaft type. In conclusion, it is shown that the twin-skeg type hull is better than the open-shaft in FOC by around 7% and in cavity volume by 20% as well.

The main purpose of this study is to determine bifurcation as the primary instability of a glass melting furnace. Steady-state and unsteady characteristics of natural convection in the partially open cavity as appeared in a glass melting furnace is investigated by using numerical analysis. Three types of convection, such as steady laminar, unsteady periodic or unsteady quasi-periodic convection may occur according to the temperature difference between upper two isothermal surfaces along the depth of cavity in a glass melting furnace. In the temperature difference of 150-900 K between batch and free surface, the larger the temperature difference, the weaker the convection strength and unsteadiness. Since the glass viscosity is increasing exponentially in the lower temperature, the batch freezes the thermofluidic field especially below the surface of it. If the depth of cavity is 0.5 m, the bifurcation to time-dependent natural convection may occur in the range of 60-650 K. If that is 1.0 m, it may occur in the whole range of temperature difference.

The flow of combustor in scramjet engine is supersonic speed. So residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for efficient combustion. This study used open cavity on fuel/air mixing model and laser schlieren was carried out to investigate flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity. A source of illumination has 10 ns endurance time so it can observe unsteady flow characteristics efficiently. Pressure was measured by varying momentum flux ratio. And the change of critical ignition point was observed to change of momentum flux ratio.
A prototype for a highly sensitive, automated measurement system for the microwave surface resistance of high-T$_c$ superconductor films was set up, and tested by measuring the microwave surface resistances of high-T$_c$ YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) films at the frequency of about 19.6 GHz and the temperature of 30 K ${\sim}$ 90 K. An open-ended TE$_{011}$ mode sapphire-loaded cylindrical cavity resonator was used as the measurement probe, where YBCO films were used as the endplates of the cylindrical cavity. The characteristics of the measurement system include functions to display the unloaded ${\varrho}$ and the resonant frequency of the TE$_{011}$ mode resonator as well as the microwave surface resistance of the YBCO films, all simultaneously as a function of temperature. Applicability of the measurement system for investigating the homogeneity in the microwave properties of large high-T$_c$ superconductor films is discussed.
