  • The lipid and fatty acid composition of various poultry eggs were examined after extracting yolk oils from the eggs of caged hen, open barn-reared hen, mallard, and muscovy duck. Total lipid content in 100 g of each edible portion was the highest in muscovy duck egg followed by open barn-reared hen, mallard, caged hen, and natural hen eggs. The triglyceride contents in the egg were in the order of caged hen, open barn-reared hen, natural hen, mallard, and muscovy duck. The cholesterol contents in total lipid were the highest in caged hen and muscovy duck eggs(4.5%), and the lowest in mallard(3.3%). Caged hen eggs had higher neutral lipid ratio among total lipid, but had lower ratio of glycolipid and phospholipid compared with those of the open barn-reared hens. For fatty acid composition, linoleic acid was the highest in the muscovy and linolenic acid was the highest in open barn-reared hen eggs. The contents of arachidonic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) were the highest in muscovy eggs. On the other hand, the content of Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) was the highest in muscovy duck eggs.

  • Recently, the u-IT applications for plants and livestock become larger and control of livestock farm environment has been used important in the field of industry. We implemented wireless sensor networks and farm environment automatic control system for applying to the breeding barn environment by calculating the THI index. First, we gathered environmental information like livestock object temperature, heart rate and momentum. And we also collected the farm environment data including temperature, humidity and illuminance for calculating the THI index. Then we provide accurate control action roof open and electric fan in of intelligent farm to keep the best state automatically by using collected data. We believed this technology can improve industrial competitiveness through the u-IT based smart integrated management system introduction for industry aversion and dairy industries labor shortages due to hard work and old ageing.

  • In South Korea, mora than 90% of swine barns had open-style side wall by winch operation, and less than 5% of swine barns were semi-windowless or windowless style. The aisle ventilation system of the barn was changed to roof-wall ventilation system, and the width and the length of barns were 10~12 m and 30~50 m, respectively. The width of aisle satisfying energy save was 2~3 m. The re-modeled barns inhaled air through duct which was opened to aisle and exhaled through forced ventilation fans on the windowless wall which was accomplished by installing planks on the open wall. After remodelling, the culling ratio and energy cost were decreased from 11% (47 heads) to 3% (12 heads) and from 1,550,000 won to 730,000 won, respectively. Hence, re-modeled swine barns raising 400 heads could save 2,835,680 won during winter (from December to March).

  • This study was conducted to evaluate animal welfare approved farms in three housing systems (open, windowless, and free-range). The survey was conducted in 25 animal welfare approved farms, and 10 farms were surveyed for distribution status. The main breed in all animal welfare approved farms of laying hens was Hy-Line Brown variety. In the case of open house, laying hens were bred in traditional and panel houses simultaneously; however, the ratio of panel house was 58.3%, which was higher than that of the traditional house. All the windowless houses were made of panels and more than 15,000 laying hens were housed in a single windowless house. In the case of free-range house, it was maintained on a small scale of less than 12,000 birds. Fifty-six percent of the surveyed farms were breeding at $7{\sim}8birds/m^2$. In terms of male and female ratios, most farms maintained 1 male:15 females, but there was a farmhouse that switched 17 or 20 females to 1 male. The daily dietary allowance was 110~170 g, and 32% of the surveyed farms provided feed of more than 150 g/day, which showed that forage feed was important. The age of at the first egg was 123 days, 122 days, and 120 days, and the peak percent was 91.8%, 94.9%, and 86.5% in open, windowless and free-range houses, respectively. The average egg production rate was 74.0%, 84.6%, and 72.7% in open, windowless, and free-range houses respectively, thus, there was no correlation between feed intake and hen-housed eggs. Distribution of welfare certified eggs was mainly a direct deal with the consumer or through contract production. The ratio of direct transactions between large-scale marts and eco-friendly specialty stores of welfare approved eggs was higher than that of conventional eggs. The rate of contract sales of eggs in both the barn and free-range systems was high, and the percentage of courier sales farms was also high. Excluding courier services, price of eggs in the barn system rose to more than 30 won/egg in the second half of 2017 (after AI). Price of eggs in the free-range system rose to more than 50 won/egg in the second half of 2017 (after AI). In the case of courier sales, the same price of 500 won was maintained before and after AI. In conclusion, the results of this study can be used as basic data for improving the animal welfare certification system for laying hens in Korea.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effect of sprinkler and fan cooling system on the physiological parameter, milk production and milk composition for Holstein cows in hot, humid climates. Thirty cows were assigned to one of two sections of open-sided loose barn. Water nozzles of sprinkler system were spaced in line at 1.2m intervals. Forced air was provided by 85cm diameter fans at rate of 3.4㎥/sec. The results obtained from these experiments are as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in meteorological data between control and fan + sprinkler cooling system(treatment group). 2. Skin temperature and rectal temperature of the treatment group were significantly lower than those of the control group (32.96 : 39.53$^{\circ}C$ vs 34.02 : 41.21$^{\circ}C$ respectively) (P<0.05). 3. Serum cortisol concentration of the treatment group(0.90$\mu\textrm{g}$/dL) was lower than that of control group(1.44$\mu\textrm{g}$/dL)(P<0.05). 4. Milk production of cows cooled with a sprinkler and fan cooling system was significantly higher than that of no cooling system (P<0.0l). 5. Lactose, protein and solid-not-fat content of milk were not changed by the treatments. Milk fat content of the control(3.23%) was low compared with the treatment group(3.38%). Somatic cell count was reduced by 26.63% in the treatment. The results indicate that a sprinkler and fan cooling systems can provide an effective means to relieve heat stress and enhance productivity of lactating Holstein cows during hot and humid summer season.
