  • [ $(Ca,Mg)_{0.15}Zr_{0.7}O_{1.7}$ ]ceramics was investigated for the application to SOFC ceramic supporter with high porosity and mechanical strength. $ZrO_2$ powder was prepared by combustion method with glycine using the solution of $ZrO(NO_3)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$ dissolved into deionized water and calcination at $800^{\circ}C$ Porous $(Ca,Mg)_{0.15}Zr_{0.7}O_{1.7}$ ceramics was prepared by sintering the mixture of prepared $ZrO_2$ powder, dolomite and carbon black at $1200{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The open porosity ofthe $(Ca,Mg)_{0.15}Zr_{0.7}O_{1.7}$ ceramics sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ was over 30 % and increased linearly with the amount of carbon black. The crystal structure of $(Ca,Mg)_{0.15}Zr_{0.7}O_{1.7}$ ceramics consisted of single cubic phase. The open pore of this ceramics was connected continuously and distributed well on the whole. This ceramics sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ showed the porosity from 32 to 55 % and mechanical strength from 90 MPa to 30 MPa with increasing the content of added carbon black.

  • $ZrO_2$was modified by treating with $H_2SO_4$ and by treating witb $SO_2,\;H_2S,\;and\;CS_2$ followed by oxidation. The oxidized species and oxidation state of sulfur compounds were investigated by infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The generation of strong acidity of modified $ZrO_2$ was independent of the sulfur source after oxidation. The sulfur ($SO_4{^{2-}}$) in the highest oxidation state was responsible for the superacidic property of the modified $ZrO_2$.

  • Recently, TCO films with low carrier concentration, high mobility and high work function are proposed beneficial as front electrode in HIT solar cell due to free-carrier absorption in NIR wavelength region and low Schottky barrier height in the front TCO/a-Si:H(p) interface. We report high transmittance and work function zirconium-doped indium tin oxide (ITO:Zr) films with various plasma (Ar/O2 and Ar) conditions. The role of (Ar/O2) plasma was to enhance the work function of the ITO:Zr films whereas the pure Ar plasma based ITO:Zr showed good electrical properties. The RF magnetron sputtered ITO:Zr films with low resistivity and high transmittance were employed as front electrode in HIT solar cells, yield the best performance of 18.15% with an open-circuit voltage of 710 eV and current density of 34.63 mA/cm2. The high work function ITO:Zr films can be used to modify the front barrier height of HIT solar cell.

  • The corrosion characteristics of zirconium alloys have been investigated in various aqueous solutions of LiOH. NaOH, KOH, RbOH. and CsOH at 3S$0^{\circ}C$. The concentrations of solutions were set to 4.3 mmol and 32.Smmol with equimolar $M^+$ and OH . The oxide characterization was performed using TEM on the samples corroded in 32. Smmol LiOH, NaOH, and KOH solution. The samples were prepared to have the same oxide thickness for the pretransition and post- transition regimes. Considering the trend of experimental data, the cation would playa major role in the corrosion process of Zr alloys in alkali hydroxide solutions. The microstructures of the oxides formed in various solutions were quite different. In LiOH solution the oxides grown in pre-transition as well as post-transition had the equiaxed structures with many pores and open grain boundaries. The oxides grown in NaOH solution had the protective columnar structures in pre-transition and the equiaxed structures with many open grain boundaries in post- transition. On the other hand. in KOH solution the columnar structure was maintained from pre- transition to post- transition. It was considered that the cation incorporation into zirconium oxide controlled the oxide characteristics and the corrosion acceleration in alkali hydroxide solutions.

  • Capsule free hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) of 12 mol% $CeO_2-88 mo% ZrO_2 (12CeO_2-88ZrO_2)$ powder was conducted at 1100~$1200^{\circ}C$ using the powder crystallized in supercritical methanol followed by supercritical drying. Porous $12CeO_2-88ZrO_2$ ceramics with ~35% open porosity, micropore diameter of ~23 nm and a narrow pore size distribution were fabricated by capsule free hot isostatic pressing at $1100^{\circ}C$. The porosity increased with decrease in HIPing temperature and was accompanied by a steady decrease in fracture strength.

  • A bulk porous $CaZrO_3/MgO$ composite with plantinum nano-dispersion was synthesized in air atmosphere through the combination of several in situ reactions, including the pyrolysis of $PtO_2$. A mixture of $CaMg(CO_3)_2$(dolomite), $ZrO_2$, $PtO_2$ and LiF (0.5 wt%, as an additive) was cold isostatically pressed at 200 MPa and sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The porous $CaZrO_3/MgO/Pt$ composite ($CaZrO_3/MgO$ : Pt=99 : 1 in volume) had a uniformly open-porous structure (porosity: 56%) with three-dimensional (3-D) network and a narrow pore-size distribution, similarly to the porous $CaZrO_3/MgO$ composites reported before. Catalytic Properties (viz., NO direct decomposition and NO reduction by $C_2H_4$) of the $CaZrO_3/MgO/Pt$ composite were investigated up to $900^{\circ}C$. In the absence of oxygen, the NO conversion rate reached ~52% for the direct decomposition and ~100% for the reduction by $C_2H_4$, respectively. The results suggest the possibility of the porous composite as a multifunctional filter, i.e., simultaneous hot gas-filtering and $de-NO_x$ in one component.

  • We report on the characteristics of Zr-doped $In_2O_3$ (IZrO) films prepared by DC-RF magnetron cosputtering of $In_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ targets for use as a transparent electrode for high efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). The effect of $ZrO_2$ doping power on electrical, optical, structural, and surface morphology of the IZrO film was investigated in detail. At optimized $ZrO_2$ RF power of 50 W, the IZrO film exhibited a low sheet resistance of 20.71 Ohm/square, and a high optical transmittance of 83.9 %. Furthermore, the OSC with the IZrO anode showed a good cell-performance: fill factor of 61.71 %, short circuit current (Jsc) of $8.484mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.593 V, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.106 %. In particular, the overall OSC characteristics of the cell with the IZrO anode were comparable to those of the OSC with the conventional Sn-doped $In_2O_3$ (FF of 65.03 %, Jsc of $8.833mA/cm^2$, Voc of 0.608 V, PCE of 3.495 %), demonstrating that the IZrO anode is a promising alternative to ITO anode in OSCs.

  • A new 80Ti-15Ta-5Zr wt% alloy surface was protected by anodic oxidation in phosphoric acid solution. The protective oxide layer (TiO2, ZrO2 and Ta suboxides and thickness of 15.5 nm) incorporated $PO{_4}^{3-}$ ions from the solution, according to high resolution XPS spectra. The AFM analysis determined a high roughness with SEM detected pores (20 - 50 nm). The electrochemical studies of bare and anodically oxidized Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy in Carter-Brugirard saliva of different pH values and saliva with 0.05M NaF, pointed to a nobler surface for the protected alloy, with a thicker electrodeposited oxide layer acting as a barrier against aggressive ions. The oxidized alloy significantly decreased corrosion current densities and total quantity of ions released into the oral environment in comparison with the bare one, at higher polarisation resistance and protective capacity of the electrodeposited layer. The impedance data revealed a bi-layered oxidation film formed by: a dense, compact, barrier layer in contact with the metallic substrate, decreasing the potential gradient across the metal/oxide layer/solution interface, reducing the anodic dissolution and a more permissive, porous layer in contact with the electrolyte. The open circuit potential for protected alloy shifted to nobler values, with thickening of the oxidation film signifying long-term protection.

  • The burning interruption between the initiator and the delay column in a Zr-Ni K1 delay system used for a K510 fuze occurs with long-time storage. About 10 % failure probability of 15-years stored delay systems shows the failure mode in open literature. This paper shows storage lifetime improvement results for the delay system through changing the single-base delay column into double-base ones and controlling the manufacturing processes especially the initial inclusion of humidity. The double-base delay columns was implemented by inserting one delay column of fast burning rates between the initiator and the previous delay column of slow burning rates. Accelerated aging tests of the delay systems with double-base columns, and then the firing tests were performed to evaluate the improved lifetime. The double-base delay columns shows improved storage lifetime of the delay system through preventing the failure mode.

  • Recently, highly porous bone substitutes, which have interconnected open pore structure, have been focused on improving their mechanical properties and modifying their functions. Especially, it is highly required to develop functional gradient structured bone substitute which is available for controlling their material properties such as bioresorption rate and elastic modulus. Porous $ZrO_2$ scaffold was fabricated by the sponge replica method using PU sponge. After 3 times of dip coating and the subsequent oven drying, burning out and microwave sintering were carried out. Various $ZrO_2$-BCP powder mixtures were prepared depending on the ratio and coated on the $ZrO_2$ scaffold by dip coating process. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to characterize the phase identification of the scaffolds. Microstructures of the bone substitutes were observed using scanning electron microscopy.
