Effects of Acupuncture & Qigong Meditation on Nonmotor Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease

  • Background: Parkinson's disease(PD) affects not only motor symptoms, but also nonmotor symptoms. This study is a clinical trial to determine whether Qigong and acupuncture affect nonmotor symptoms of PD. Methods: A 2-arm parallel and randomized trial was performed with 21 participants who had received either Qigong meditation only [control group (CG)] or acupuncture and Qigong meditation [experimental group (EG)]. The participants' levels of the discomfort in nonmotor symptoms from Parkinson's disease were evaluated by using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scales (UPDRS 1) and Test of Smell Identification (TSI) before and after 12 treatments at baseline and 1 month after 12 treatments. Results: The both CG and EG showed improvements in the UPDRS 1 score after treatment by 5.6 ± 5.15 (p= 0.003; 74%) and 4.8 ± 3.80 (p = 0.004; 79%), respectively. The both CG and the EG did improvements in the TSI after treatment by 10.3 ± 4.37 (p < 0.001; 84%) and 12.6 ± 1.77 (p = 0.022; 100%), respectively. However, statistical differences were not observed between the CG and the EG using the UPDRS 1 and the TSI scores. Conclusion: The combination of Qigong and acupuncture and Qigong alone was shown to improve the nonmotor symptoms and olfactory function of PD. In the future, large-scale clinical studies on alternative treatment for PD and studies on mechanisms affecting nonmotor symptoms of acupuncture and Qigong are needed.

위암환자의 치료 후 식사 경험 및 후미각 변화의 정성적 탐색 (Qualitative Exploration of Dietary Characteristics and Changes in Taste and Smell in Post-Surgical Gastric Cancer Patients)

  • To develop customized food products for gastric cancer patients, it is crucial to understand their dietary characteristics and changes in their perception of smell and taste due to their condition. This study conducted in-depth interviews and administered olfactory and gustatory tests on 20 patients with gastric cancer. A control group of 20 healthy, gender and age matched individuals, was included for comparison. Patients reported difficulties in sustaining their appetite, particularly during chemotherapy. This could be attributed to gastrointestinal discomfort and an altered perception of smell and taste. The olfactory test revealed that cancer patients were significantly less sensitive than the control group. Also, a smaller number of participants in the cancer group were reported to have a normal taste function, which enabled them to perceive umami, one of the five basic taste compared to those in the control group. These findings demonstrated that gastric cancer patients experience post-surgical digestive issues, chemotherapy-induced changes in smell and taste, and appetite loss. To improve the quality of life of these patients and the efficacy of the treatment, it is necessary to consider not only their nutritional requirements but also other factors such as appetite loss and discomfort when developing meals specifically for them.

한국인 청년 남성에서 흡연에 의한 미각역치의 변화 (Changes of Taste Threshold after Smoking in Young Korean Men)

  • 흡연과 미각간의 상관관계를 알아보고자 조선대학교 치과대학 및 치의학전문대학원에 재학 중이거나 조선대학교 치과병원에 근무 중인 건강한 한국인 청년기 남성들을 대상으로 28명의 흡연자와 29명의 비흡연자를 선발하여, 설문조사 및 전기미각검사를 시행한 결과, 1. 흡연 후 주관적 미각변화가 있는 사람 10 명(36%), 없는 사람 18 명(64%)으로 나타났다. 2. 흡연자의 혀끝, 혀측방, 유곽유두, 연구개에서 흡연 전 전기미각역치는 비흡연자보다 높았다(p < 0.05). 3. 흡연 전과 흡연 직후의 전기미각역치는 혀끝, 혀측방, 유곽유두 및 연구개에서 흡연 전보다 높았고(p < 0.05), 시간경과에 따른 수치는 불규칙했다. 4. 흡연자의 흡연량과 중독정도에 따른 전기미각역치의 차이는 관찰되지 않았다. 이상의 결과를 종합할 때, 흡연자와 비흡연자의 전기미각역치간에 있어서 차이가 나타나며, 흡연자는 흡연 직후 흡연으로 인한 미각변화가 발생함을 확인하였다. 그러나 그 영향은 일시적이며, 흡연자의 흡연량과 중독정도에 따른 미각기능의 차이는 관찰되지 않았다. 본 연구 결과를 토대로 앞으로의 연구에서는 화학미각검사법(chemical taste test)을 통한 흡연 전, 후의 미각기능의 차이에 대한 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료되며, 더불어 흡연의 후각기능에 대한 영향도 함께 고려되어야 할 것이다.
