This paper presents the development of an expert system for monitoring and control of an oil production facility. The objectives of developing an expert system for the oil production facility are to monitor the Important processing parameters in different sections of the facilities and to control battery operations in real time. By providing consistent, fast, and reliable decision support to operators, the expert system can be used for automated monitoring and control of a petroleum production facility located south of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. The system was implemented in Visual Basic 6.0.

A field-oriented UHF system for on-line PD monitoring of transformers. is designed, which has been installed inside the oil tank of a transformer by two ways: on-line installing mode through the oil-valve and pre-installing mode through the man hole/hand hole cover. This system has successfully captured long intermittent discharge signals that hadn't been detected through conventional techniques, and solved the problem successfully. The results demonstrate that UHF technique has great advantages for on-line PD monitoring of transformers. By adopting the peak detection technique, it becomes easy and effective for the transplantation of the phase-resolved pattern recognition technique from conventional method to UHF method, and then to realize continuous on-line monitoring, source characterization and trending analysis.

Most of marine pollution have been occurred by oil spill accidents resulted from ship accidents in South Korea. This year there were two large oil spill accidents: the Yeosu Oil Spill Accident (2014.01.31.(Fri.) 09:35 LT) and the Captain Vangelis L. Oil Spill Accident (2014.02.15.(Sat.) 14:00 LT). In general, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is used in monitoring and detection of oil dumping and spilled oils by accident at sea. Therefore it is expected that KOMPSAT-5, launched successfully last year, will take part in that mission during a normal operation mode. After the two accidents, high spatial resolution optical satellite data including KOMPSAT-3 were acquired February 2 and 14, 2014. In this presentation, we analyzed optical properties of spilled oils from optical satellite imagery to estimate the spilled area and the volume at each region. Finally, a satellite application planning for ocean surveillance in South Korea will be presented.

For reliable operation of oil-filled electrical equipment, monitoring and maintenance of insulating oil is essential. Dissolved gas analysis(DGA) is widely used for monitoring faults in high voltage electrical equipment in service. Therefore, oil analysis should be monitored regularly during its service life. KEPCO has investigated thousands of dissolved gas analysis data since 1985, and conducted studies on the relationship of gas in oil analysis and internal inspection results of transformer. As the results, KEPCO revised criteria for transformer diagnosis and has applied it since 2008. Almost of 100 cases of internal inspection results since 2001 have been investigated. This paper presents the correlation of the fault-identifying gases with faults found in actual transformers and how should we approach to internal inspection of transformer by dissolved gas analysis.
Changes in light transmission characteristics caused by various types of oil contaminations were experimentally measured with a built-in type wear monitoring device. Three kinds of iron powders of different size distribution, carbon duct, two kinds of solutions and grease were used for the test contaminants in this work. Light intensity of the transmitted light was measured with the contamination level. Results showed that the transmitted light intensity decreased linearly with the contamination concentration in the oil and the slope was affected by the size distribution. Light attenuation was also caused greatly by carbon dust, water contamination and poly-meric fibers in terms of the light absorption. As a result, it was proved that the optical measurement device could be applicable effectively for detecting any significant change in lubricating oils.

G8 summit meeting held in July 2008 decided to set up a long-term goal, by 2050, reducing the world greenhouse emissions by half of those emitted in 1990. In November 2009, the Government announced to reduce the national $CO_2$ emission by 30[%] of BAU by 2020. Electric power industries in Korea produce most of their electricity by burning fossil fuels, and emit approximately 28[%] of national $CO_2$ emissions. Monitoring the $CO_2$ emissions. Monitoring the $CO_2$ emission of electric power plants is very important. This paper presents a method to calculate the hourly $CO_2$ emission for a thermal power plant burning mixture of coal and oil using the performance test data and coal-oil mix rate. An example of $CO_2$ emission calculation is also demonstrated.

The new approach to the problem of oil spill detection consisting in combined use of all available quasiconcurrent satellite information (AVHRR NOAA, TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, MODIS Terra/Aqua, QuikSCAT) is suggested. We present the results of the application of the proposed approach to the operational monitoring of seawater condition and pollution in the coastal zone of northeastern Black Sea conducted in 2006. This monitoring is based on daily receiving, processing and analysis of data different in nature (microwave radar images, optical and infrared data), resolution and surface coverage. These data allow us to retrieve information on seawater pollution, sea surface and air-sea boundary layer conditions, seawater temperature and suspended matter distributions, chlorophyll a concentration, mesoscale water dynamics, near-surface wind and surface wave fields. The focus is on coastal seawater circulation mechanisms and their impact on the evolution of pollutants.
Bioremediation technologies were applied to experimental microcosms, simulating an oil spill in a lower intertidal area. Three treatments (oil only, oil plus nutrients, and oil plus nutrients and microbial inocula) were applied, and each microcosm was repeatedly filled and eluted with seawater every 12 h to simulate tidal cycles. To minimize washing-out of the inoculum by the tidal cycles, microbial cells were primarily immobilized on diatomaceous earth before they were applied to the oiled sand. Oil degradation was monitored by gravimetric measurements, thin layer chromatography/flame ionization detector (TLC/FID) analysis, and gas chromatography (GC) analysis, and the loss of oil content was normalized to sand mass or nor-hopane. When the data were normalized to sand mass, no consistent differences were detected between nutrient-amended and nutrient/inoculum-amended microcosms, although both differed from the oil-only microcosm in respect of oil removal rate by a factor of 4 to 14. However, the data relative to nor-hopane showed a significant treatment difference between the nutrient-amended and nutrient/inoculum-treated microcosms, especially in the early phase of the treatment. The accelerating effect of inoculum treatment has hardly been reported in studies of oil bioremediation in the Tower intertidal area. The inoculum immobilized on diatomaceous earth seemed to be a very effective formulation for retaining microbial cells in association with the sand. Results of this study also suggest that interpretation of the effectiveness of bioremediation could be dependent on the selection of monitoring methods, and consequently the application of various analytical methods in combination could be a solution to overcome the limitations of oil bioremediation monitoring.

This paper dealt with the measurement and analysis of electromagnetic waves radiated from a partial discharge (PD) source in insulation oil to apply condition monitoring of oil-immersed transformers. Two types of narrow-band monopole antennas with the resonant frequency of a 500 MHz and a 1 GHz were designed and fabricated. Also, a needle-plane electrode system was manufactured to simulate PDs and the curvature radius of the needle is 10 ${\mu}m$ and the diameter of the plane is 60 mm. Electromagnetic wave was measured by the PD measurement system with the monopole antennas. Detection sensitivity of the fabricated antenna was compared for the same PD magnitude; 620 $mV_{peak}$ for the 500 MHz antenna and 960 $mV_{peak}$ for the 1 GHz antenna to the PD magnitude of 74 pC. Consequently, the 1 GHz monopole antenna is more effective to detect PDs in oil-immersed transformers.
