A Study on Office Environment Satisfaction and Worker's Subjective Symptoms

  • Objective:This study aims to investigate the correlation between office environment satisfaction levels and workers' subjective symptoms by conducting surveys asking office workers to state their subjective symptoms and office satisfaction levels. Background: The increased number of office workers and their work hours have led to new understandings of the importance of office environments including its temperature, humidity, noise levels, lighting, space arrangements, and quality of air. Method: Specific details on office work, office environment, office space satisfaction levels, workplace related symptoms, absence from work, due to workplace-related symptoms, were analyzed based on the survey answers given by 451 office workers who were the subjects of this research. Results: Office workers showed different characteristics of subjective symptoms depending on their gender, age, work experience, and time spent resting and on computers. Also, differences in symptoms were found for workers with different satisfaction levels for office environment (temperature, humidity, noise levels, quality of air, lighting) and office space arrangements (location of monitors, area and display of office space, chairs and desks). Conclusion and Application: Relationship between workers' satisfaction levels with the office environment and their subjective symptoms is expected to be serve as essential data for systematic management of the workplace.

The Effect of Office Layouts and Ambient Office Sounds on the Simple Tasks of White Collar Workers

  • The purpose of this study is to scrutinize the effect of office layouts and ambient office sounds on the performance of office workers involved with a proof-reading test (simple task). Twenty subjects, who were professional researchers and computer programmers, were from three different office layouts: 1) Nine subjects from a combined office type with open meeting places and closed individual offices; 2) five from an open office with rectangular individual workstations, and 3) six from an open office with triangular individual workstations. Architects and consultants working in the field of office have reported from interviews and their own observations that occupants' satisfaction differs as their office layouts vary although the sizes are the same. This finding leads to the hypothesis of this experiment. Proof-reading test results were obtained from three different office layouts (combined office type, rectangular and triangular individual workstations in open offices) under two different sound conditions (quiet background sound and ambient sound of their own workplace) for 10 minutes. The test analysis shows the mean test score of subjects from the triangular individual workstations in open offices is significantly different from the mean test scores of subjects from the combined office type and the rectangular individual workstations in open offices.

  • 본 연구에서는 여성의 사무직 진출이 활발히 이루어지고 있고, 여성의 사무관리자로의 양성을 위한 교육과정에 있어 앞서있는 미국 IAAP와 영국 NVQs의 사무관리과정의 교육내용과 자격시험을 비교 분석하여 우리나라 비서 ?사무관련과의 교육과정구성에 발전방항을 제시하고자 하였다. 분석결과로는 사무관리자가 사무실에서 실제로 업무를 처리할 때 알아야 하는 제반이론과 그 실제적인 활용방법을 충실히 반영하는 내용으로 이루어져 있었고, 전체적인 교육과정의 편성에 있어 이론적 내용과 실무적인 내용이 균형있게 포함되어야 함을 다시 한번 인식시켜 주었다.

  • As seen in constant reference to our modern are as the 'Information Age', our daily lives are flooded with a variety of information. Under such circumstance, efficient management and distribution of information are increasingly needed. When it comes to office environment, the role of furniture is very important because furniture must be placed in the office and it also serves as an essential component to improve work efficiency. As the importance of furniture increases, office furniture reflects diverse needs. That is to say, office furniture is used to partition space while reflecting mental and emotional state of workers in the office. At this backdrop, it can be perceived that office goes beyond a place where work is done. In order to contemplate how office and office furniture enhance work efficiency and create pleasant, delightful office environment, the study in this paper identified and examined overall color images of office, and color use and color preference in office furniture. The purposes of this study were: 1) to identify the use of and preference for color images of office 2) to analyze the color images of office furniture and understand its color use and color preference; 3) to understand the color use and color preference in office storage furniture.

  • Recently, the society is being, developed physically and technically and the desire for the better equipped office environment has been required. Due to the change of recognition about the information-oriented office and the rapid progress ot the office automation many conventional office environment are changing to the new phase, the intelligent building. Unfortunately, because of the lack of the harmony between our business operating characteristics and the western office space planning, there are some severe problems in improving the business ability. To create the efficent office environment design, we have to understand the function of the western office space and our current phenomenon, appearing in the company.   • A contemporary office space is changed by the transformation to an information-oriented society from an industrial society. A contemporary office space is recognized as an interactional space which is more of a mental and psychological space than a physical space. I studied the basic concept of an office space and the relationship of a social change and an office space on this study. I also studied the concept of an ubiquitous computing and the relationship of an ubiquitous computing and an office space. Through this study, we can establish the new concept of an office space to be applied to an ubiquitous concept. The ubiquitous concept of an office space will be brought into a new prototype of an office space, and then there is no more important to a physical place and time. The office space must be redesigned by an ubiquitous space nowadays.

  • The subject on office automation is gradually gaining more improtance due to the fact that the efficiency of office systems contribute to the increase of productivity as much as manufactoring systems themselves. For successful implementation of office automation, one must carefully plan and execute various steps such as the analysis of office tasks, personnel training, workplace design, equipment design, and so on. The previous studies related to the subject has not been concrete enough to be practically helpful for the actual realization of office automation. In this paper, a new analysis method of the office task is proposed. This analysis method is based on the Rasmussen's and Bennette's methods. The Rasmussen's method describes a way of quantifying mental workload while the Bennette's method provides a tool for the analysis of the office task. The posner's and Rouse's methods are also employed for the detailed division of tasks. The method proposed in this paper is believed to be easier for use and expected to be more helpful for us to cope with the clear definition of office tasks that is vital to successful implementation of office automation.

Office Environment and Musculoskeletal Complaints of Office Workers

  • Objective: This study aims to investigate the correlation between office and work environment satisfaction levels and workers' musculoskeletal symptoms by conducting surveys asking office workers to state their musculoskeletal symptoms and office and work environment satisfaction levels. Background: The increased number of office workers and their indoor work hours using computers have led to new understandings of the importance of office environment including its temperature, humidity, noise levels, lighting and quality of air, and work environment including monitor arrangement, space arrangement and the functions of desks and chairs. Method: Specific details on office work, office environment satisfaction levels, work environment satisfaction levels, musculoskeletal symptoms, absence from work and treatment due to musculoskeletal related symptoms were analyzed based on the survey answers given by 397 office workers who were the subjects of this research. Results: Office workers showed different characteristics of musculoskeletal symptoms depending on their gender, age, work experience, office hours, break time and time spent on computers. Also, differences in symptoms were found for workers'with different satisfaction levels for office environment (temperature, humidity, noise levels, quality of air, lighting) and work environment (location of monitors, area and display of office space, chairs and desks). ANOVA shows the differences between groups of subjects classified by the experience of work-absences and treatments or pain complaints. Conclusion and Application: Relationship between workers' satisfaction levels with the office and work environment and their musculoskeletal symptoms is expected to be served as essential data for systematic management of the workplace.

  • 오늘날, 타통적인 사무대은 사회.경제적 환경의 변화에 따라 사무실로서의 제 기능을 제대로 수행하지 못하고 있다. 이러한 현상은 21c에 들어서면서 더욱더 심화될 것으로 예상된다. 여기에, 그 대소의 하나로 ${\ulcorner}대체 사무기{\urcorner}$이라는 새로운 유형의 사무실을 제내하고자 한다. 대체 사무대이란, 전통적인 사무실과 대체할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 사무실로서, 팀 사무실, 호텔링, SOHO, 위성형 사무실, 가상 사무실 등이 여기에 속한다. 이들 사무실은, 강력한 정보기술을 기반으로 사무실로서의 제 기능과 그 역할을 효율적으로 수행할 수 있으므로, 정보화 사무실의 뉴 패러다임으로서 정립되고 확산될 것으로 예상된다.
