The analysis of wave parametric characteristics in sea regions in the vicinity of Korean Peninsula have been carried out using the third generation wave model, WAVEWATCH-III (Tolman, 1999) and four observed buoy data of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Significant wave height increases about 2-3 hours later after the increase of wind speed. Maximum correlation coefficient between two parameters appears in Donghae buoy data, which is at off-shore region. When land breeze occurs, it can be found that the correlation coefficient decreases. Time differences between wind speeds and wave heights correspond to significant tidal periods at all of the buoy locations except for Donghae buoy. After verifying the WAVEWATCH-III model results by the comparing with observed buoy data, we have carried out numerical experiments near the Kuroshio current and East Sea areas, and then reconfirmed that when there exist an opposite strong current in the propagation direction of the waves or wind direction, wave height and length get higher and shorter, respectively and vice versa. It has been shown that these modulations of wave parameters are considerable when wind speed is week or mean current is relatively strong, and corresponding values have been represented.

In order to respond to environmental changes and various events in the nearby sea area due to the operation of an offshore wind substantiation farm in the Southwest Sea, X-band radar has been installed and operated on a fixed platform since 2018. The X-band radar's monitoring system produces wave and current data through Rutter's Ocean WaveS wave and current (Sigma S6 WaMoS II). In this study, to verify the reliability of the produced data, the accuracy of current and wave data was evaluated by analyzing the correlation with the results obtained by an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP). The selected analysis period was a total of 30 days from November 29 to December 28, 2021, the period during which the ADCP survey was conducted. As a result of comparative verification, the current, wave height and peak wave period (Hs > 0.69 m) data observed from the X-band radar showed a high correlation with the results investigated from ADCP. In the future, current and wave data produced by X-band radar are expected to be used as basic data to analyze environmental changes in sea areas and provide information on various events.
Ocean Research Stations (ORSs) is the ocean platform type observation towers and measured oceanic, atmospheric and environmental data. These station located on the offshore area far from the coast, so they can produce the data without land effect. This study focused to improve the wave data quality of ORS station. The wave observations at ORSs are used by the C-band (5.8 GHz, 5.17 cm) MIROS Wave and Current Radar (MWR). MWR is convenient to maintenance and produce reliability wave data under bad weather conditions. MWR measured significant wave height, peak wave period, peak wave direction and 2D wave spectrum, so it's can provide wave information for researchers and engineers. In order to improve the reliability of MWR wave data, Datawell Waverider Buoy was installed near the one ORS (Socheoncho station) during 7 months and validate the wave data of MWR. This study found that the wave radar tend to be overestimate the low wave height under wind condition. Firstly, this study carried out the wave Quality Control (QC) using wind data, however the quality of wave data was limited. So, this study applied the four filters (Correlation Check, Direction Filter, Reduce White Noise and Phillips Check) of MWR operating software and find that the filters effectively improve the wave data quality. After applying 3 effective filters in combination, the RMSE of significant wave height decreased from 0.81m to 0.23m, by 0.58m and Correlation increased from 0.66 to 0.96, by 0.32, so the reliability of MWR significant wave height was significantly improved.

For calculation of wave field for design of coastal and port structures, generally the wind fields from inland observation record or the predicted waves from deep water wave transformation model are being used. However, for the first case, as we should revise the wave data adopting correcting parameters depending on the distance from the coast and location, it is difficult to extract water waves from wind field. Furthermore, for the second case, because of the calculation which executed under very large grid sizes in the wide domain, the simulation(wave transformation) implied uncertainty in the near shore area and shallow region. So it's difficult to obtain exact data from the simulation. Thus, in this study the calculation of wave field on shallow water is accomplished using the observed data of typhoon 'Maemi' in the Korea Eastern South sea. Moreover, for the accuracy of the calculated wave field, we compared and studied the observed data of wave height and direction on the vicinity of the Ulsan waters. It is proved that the results of this study is more accurate than the existing method with showing ${\pm}1.3%$ difference between observed and calculated wave height distribution in Ulsan waters

In this study, wave model was conducted on the presence or absence of water level changes and currents effects in coastal waters coexisting with waves and currents, then the results were compared. The flow field applied the results of the RIAMOM model and the wave model applied the SWAN model. Among ECMWF, NCEP and JMA, wind data applied JMA data sets which agreed well with the observed data comparatively. Numerical simulation was conducted for 8 months from January to August 2016. For each case, the deviation of wave height was calculated for the high wave of more than 2.5 m for comparison with observed data. As a result, the deviation of wave height was not significant both considering water level changes and currents effects or not at wave observation stations installed in deep waters. However, a significant deviation of wave height of 5~10% was obtained depending on water level changes and currents effects at the comparison point in shallow waters.

Swells occurred on the coast of the East Sea on February 24, 2008 caused a loss of three lives and also damaged several west coasts of Japan. The recent increase of swell intensity with number of accidents demands more accurate forecasting of swells in terms of time and location. The swells occurred in February 2008 are hindcasted using SWAN model to examine the accuracy of the model for future forecasting. The model results are compared with ReWW3 data as well as measurement wave data and specially, wave spectrum is analysed by comparing with observed spectrum at two wave stations located in the east coast of Korea. The SWAN model shows similar results with observation data in terms of significant wave heights and swell arrival time but the shapes of wave spectrum are different between model and in-situ measurement data. For further improvement of swell forecasting, more comparison and analysis with observed wave spectrum is necessary and wave directional spectrum data are required to study on the characteristics of swells in the East Sea.

As developing the large-scale offshore wind farm is expected, the preliminary environmental impact assessment is very essential. In this study, the wave hindcast model is verified based on observed data at the coast around Wido which is among the candidate sites for developing the offshore wind farm. In addition, the effect of the wind turbine foundations on wave height is analyzed when total 35 wind turbines including monopile foundations of 5 m in diameter are installed. Calculation result of significant wave height is in good accord with observed data since the RMS error is 0.35 m. Moreover, it is found that the presence of the wind turbine foundations hardly affects wave height as wave damping ratio is less than 1%.

We installed HF Radar of Array type in Site A and Site B, observing the real-time wave and current in the central East coast of Korea. WERA(WavE RAdar) in this research uses HF Radar of Array Type with frequency range of 24.525 MHz, developed by Helzel, Germany. Each site is a 8-Channel system consisting of four transmitters and eight receivers, generating wave and current data, being observed every thirty minutes at the present time. HF Radar has grid resolution of an interval of 1.5 km using bandwidth of 150 kHz; The wave data covers an observation range of about 25 km, and the current data covers the maximum observation range of about 50 km. The Wave data observed by HF Radar was compared and verified with the AWAC data observed in the research sites. MIT also compared the Current data observed by HF Radar with Monthly the East sea average surface current and current flow pattern provided by KOHA(Korea Hydrographic and oceanographic Administration). The regression line and deviation of the comparison data of Wave was calculated by Principal Component Analysis, which showed correlation coefficient 0.86 and RMSD 0.186. Besides, data analysis of long-term changes of the current in the East coast showed that, during August and September, the North Korean Cold Current flow into the southward direction and the East Korean Warm Current flow into the northward direction in the coast.
Numerical simulation of the sediment by the Delft3d model was conducted to examine the changes in the sediment budget transport caused by long-term wave changes at the Maengbang beach. Representative waves were generated with input reduction tools using NOAA NCEP wave data for about 40 years, i.e., from January 1979 to May 2019. To determine the adequacy of the model, wave and depth changes were compared and verified using wave and depth data observed for about 23 months beginning in March 2017. As a result of the error analysis, the bias was 0.05 and the root mean square error was 0.23, which indicated that the numerical wave results were satisfactory. Also, the observed change in depth and numerical result were similar. In addition, to examine the effect due to long-term changes in the waves, the NOAA wave data classified into each of the representative wave grades, and then the annual trend of the representative wave was analyzed. After deciding the weight of each wave class considering the changed wave environment in 2100, the amounts of sedimentation, deposition, and the sediment transport budget were reviewed for the same period. The results indicated that the sedimentation pattern did not change significantly compared to the current state, and the amount of the local sediment budget shown in the present state was slightly less. And there has been a local increase in the number of sediment budget transport, but there is no significant difference in the net and amount of sediment movements.
In this study, the wave power resources at the three locations [Sokcho, Hupo, and Onsan] on the east coast of Korea were estimated by using the field measurement data and were compared with the results of previous researches. It was found that seasonal variation of the wave power is very significant on the east coast of Korean peninsula. The wave power was the smallest in the summer season at all the locations. At Hupo and Onsan, the highest value of the monthly-averaged wave power was observed in September, probably because the pathways of typhoon in September were close to both locations. At the northest location, Sockcho, in contrast, the monthly highest value of the wave power appeared in January, probably owing to the influence of storm waves driven by Donghae twister. The estimated annual average wave power was 4.5 kW/m at Sokcho, which was about two times larger than those at other two locations. It is noteworthy that this result is completely different from past researches based on wave hindcasting data. In addition, the estimates of wave power by the past researches seemed to be smaller than those of the present study, especially at the northern region of the east coast.
