Most construction works on the soft ground adopt instrumentation to manage settlement and stability of the embankment. The rapid progress of the information technologies and the digital data acquisition on the soft ground instrumentation has led to the fast-growing amount of data. Although valuable information about the behaviour of the soft ground may be hiding behind the data, most of the data are used restrictedly only for the management of settlement and stability. One of the critical issues on soft ground instrumentation is the long-term settlement prediction. Some observational settlement analysis methods are used for this purpose. But the reliability of the analysis results is remained in vague. The knowledge could be discovered from a large volume of experiences on the observational settlement analysis. In this article, we present a database to store settlement records and data mining procedure. A large volume of knowledge about observational settlement prediction were collected from the database by applying the filtering algorithm and knowledge discovery algorithm. Statistical analysis revealed that the reliability of observational settlement analysis depends on stay duration and estimated degree of consolidation.
To investigate the influences of the observational nudging and the analysis nudging on the WRF simulation for the heavy snowfall event in Yeongdong area on 26 February 2012, the sensitivity experiments in relation to nudging effects were conducted. We initially set the magnitude of nudging coefficient of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ to apply to the analysis nudging experiments and observational experiments. To select the optimized options for the observational nudging, the radius influence experiment was carried out with radii ranging from 10 to 25 km at 5 km intervals. Among the observational nudging experiments, the experiment, which was conducted with the option of the radius influence of 15 km and that of the nudging coefficient of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ (ONG exp.), showed a best result. As giving the nudging effect only directly on D1 and D2 brought about a better result for the analysis nudging, we set the analysis nudging experiment as above (ANG exp.). We compared and analyzed the results from the control experiment, ONG experiment, and ANG experiment to reveal nudging effects. It was found that the control experiment brought about a result that it overestimated its precipitation in comparison with the observation and failed to properly simulate the time zone of rainfall concentration. When either of the two nudging (observational and analysis nudging) was applied to the data assimilation, it brought about a better result than the control experiment. Especially the observational nudging led to a meaningful result for the wind field, while the analysis nudging had the best result for the precipitation distribution among the experiments.
The purpose of this study was to use phenomenological perspectives to identify the meaning and structure of the observational experience of labor and delivery by student nurses in the clinical setting. The participants were 115 junior and senior students from Christian College of Nursing in Kwang Ju. The students were asked to write about their observational experience in the delivery room. Colaizzi's method was used for phenomenological analysis. The investigator analysed the data to identify and categorize themes and basic structural elements. Twelve themes and eight basic structure were identified. The process of the observational experience in labor and delivery has three proposed phases : anticipatory, observational and post-observational. In the anticipatory phase, nursing students were related only to the event of anticipated labor and delivery of clients. Structure 1, feeling of expectation and fear, was identified. In the observational phase, students were related to the labor and delivery situation, a woman delivered and a newborn. Structure 2, shock and suffering, was identified in relation to the labor and delivery situation. Structure 3, need for caring and satisfaction, was identified in relation to the woman delivered. Structure 4, feeling of mystery and joy, was identified in relation to the newborn. In the post-observational phase, relations between students and the life of a human being, students and self in the future, students and their mothers and students and women and God appeared. And in these relations 〈structure 5, valuable〉, 〈structure 6, feeling of expectation and fear〉, 〈structure 7, love and appreciation〉 and 〈structure 8, greatness〉 were identified.

Observational data with missing or incomplete data are common in biomedical research. Multiple imputation is an effective approach to handle missing data with the ability to decrease bias while increasing statistical power and efficiency. In recent years propensity score (PS) matching has been increasingly used in observational studies to estimate treatment effect as it can reduce confounding due to measured baseline covariates. In this paper, we describe in detail approaches to competing risk analysis in the setting of incomplete observational data when using PS matching. First, we used multiple imputation to impute several missing variables simultaneously, then conducted propensity-score matching to match statin-exposed patients with those unexposed. Afterwards, we assessed the effect of statin exposure on the risk of heart failure-related hospitalizations or emergency visits by estimating both relative and absolute effects. Collectively, we provided a general methodological framework to assess treatment effect in incomplete observational data. In addition, we presented a practical approach to produce overall cumulative incidence function (CIF) based on estimates from multiple imputed and PS-matched samples.
Observational methods to evaluate postural load have an intrinsic week point that is the problem of reliability in observing postures subjectively, although they have been widely used in assessing risk factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in the industry. In this study, observational reliability was discussed based on reviewing several previous studies. Practical guidelines was presented to reduce the observational errors when using video recording for the assessment of risk factors. In addition, previous studies on observational reliability were summarized and analyzed according to body parts to be observed, media for observation, objective measures, analysis, statistics, etc. It is expected that this basic study can be used to increase the applicability and accuracy of the observational methods.

Recently, the observational design and construction method in tunnels has been becoming important. Rock masses include various discontinuities such as joints, faults, fractures, bedding planes, and, cracks. The behavior of tunnels in hard rocks, therefore, is generally controlled by various discontinuities. In this study, a new key block analysis method for observational design and construction method in tunnels is proposed, and then applied to the actual tunnel with a super-large cross-section. The proposed analysis method considers finite persistence of discontinuities. The new analysis method can handle concave and convex shaped blocks. To demonstrate the applicability of this key block analysis method for observational design and construction method in tunnels, the analysis results are examined and compared with those of the conventional method.

The important role of observational method in geotechnical engineering are emphasized together with the direction of future development, concerning successful application of the technique on the site investigation, design and feed back at various construction stages. Case histories on the application of feed back are introduced in order to achieve the most economical and reliable construction for tunnel, rock slope and deep excavations through feed back system at design and construction stages. Also the limitations and advantages of the observational method and the role of feed back system are discussed for construction of tunnel, rock slope and deep excavation in hard ground such as layered ground conditions including weathered, soft and hard rocks.

Observational methods such as the Asaoka's method and the hyperbolic method are widely applied on the settlement analysis using observed settlement. The most unreliable aspects in those methods is arose from the subjective discretion of initial non-linearity on linear regression. The initial non-linearity is inevitable due to the settlement behaviour itself. Therefore an objective method is essential to achieve more reliable results on settlement analysis. It was found that the initial non-linear data are statistical outliers. New automation algorithms of the hyperbolic and the Asaoka's method were developed based on outlier detection method. The methods are a successive detection of outliers and a searching method of suitable hyperbolic range for the Asaoka's and the hyperbolic method respectively. Applicability of the algorithms was verified through case studies.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between pre-service elementary teacher's prior knowledge and processes of observations and hypotheses generation via analysis of descriptive fault patterns during observation, problem generation and hypotheses generation processes. For the purpose of this study, thirty-four undergraduate students were participated and descriptions of participants' responds were analyzed. As the result, four patterns of descriptive fault on the process of generating hypothesis were classified; 1) descriptive fault from the causalities, 2) descriptive fault from repetition of observational facts, 3) descriptive fault from the priority of prior knowledge, and 4) descriptive fault from negation of the observational facts. From the result, the researcher was able to explore the faults caused by pre-service elementary students' prior knowledge through the observational descriptive analysis with hypothetical descriptive analysis.
Purpose: This study suggests observational gait analysis (OGA) strategies for therapists with limited experience in clinics in evaluating patients with stroke during walking. Methods: The proposed model was the mnemonic STEP APP, whose initials refer to the process of OGA for clinical reasoning and decision-making by identifying problems during walking in patients with stroke. Results: STEP APP stands for step (S), tibia (T), events (E), phases (P), ankle (A), problems (P), and priority (P). It serves as a procedural guide for OGA in patients with stroke walking on the ground. Conclusion: This review suggests a simple evaluation of gait using OGA that can be used by therapists who have less experience and difficulty in evaluating patients with stroke during walking. However, it is important to consider the front and back views of motion as well as motion in the transverse plane in order to analyze problems accurately. Furthermore, small joint problems, such as those in the foot, should be considered when evaluating patients with stroke during walking.
