  • We report an investigation of BOES imaging performance variation against observational variables. Average FWHM of the ThAr reference spectra recorded in 10 spectral image frames observed during the night of January 5th, 2004 was computed. The averaged FWHM data was then correlated with observational variables including telescope altitude, air mass, focus position, exposure time, detector temperature, gain settings and S/N ratio. • The long-term observational properties of the photometric behaviors of the short period(p=0.48 day) eclipsing binary system XY UMa are discussed. They are based on the UBV observatins, which were carried out by Geyer in the yaers 1955-1961, 1968, 1975-1984. Light curves of XY UMa revealed very large changes not only between consecutive observing nights, but also from season to season. Between 1955 and 1984, the mean system brightness increased about 30% during this time interfvals, meanwhile, the orbital period of this system was constant whithin 1.6% of its period. The colour index curve shows similar variations like the light curve but with a phase offset oscillation around the time instants of the primary minama. Observational evidence for photospheric and chromospheric activities on the XY Uma are also discussed.

  • In this study, we developed a fog classification algorithm to classify fog type based on fog generation mechanism. For the analysis period of 1986-2005, 15,748 fog events had been reported from the 40 observational sites in South Korea. Thus, practically, it is almost impossible to individually classify the fog type of the whole fog events occurred in South Korea manually. In this study, the characteristics of fog during the research period were investigated and the fog classification flowchart were developed base on the analysis, and the fog classification algorithm was applied for the classification of fogs occurred at the observational sites. Finally, the classified fog-type and hindcasted fog occurance results obtained from the flowchart were evaluated for verification.

  • To study properties of the variation of the infrared emission of OH/IR stars, we collect and analyze the infrared observational data in K band for nine OH/IR stars. We use the observational data obtained for about three decades including recent data from the two micron all sky survey (2MASS) and the deep near infrared survey of the southern sky (DENIS). We use Marquardt-Levenberg algorithm to determine the pulsation period and amplitude for each star and compare them with previous results of infrared and radio investigations.

  • DC servo motors have a defect that they need a periodical maintenance because of a brush commutation and also they have a difficulty at high speed operation. In this reason, the use of AC Servo motors are increasing these days. In this paper, a proposed neuro observer is applied to speed control of AC servo motor. The proposed observer complement a problem that occur from increase of gain of High-gain observer in proportion to the square number of observable state variables. And also, the proposed observer can tune the gain obtained by differentiating observational error automatically by using the backpropagation training method to stabilize the observational speed. The excellence and feasibility of the proposed observer is proved by making a comparison test between the proposed observer and the others applied to the same AC servo motor.

  • (1) The correlation between the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the properties of their host galaxies suggests that SMBHs and host galaxies are closely linked in their formation and evolution. While the exact origin of their relationship is still under debate, theoretical models often invoke feedback from active galactic nuclei as a crucial mechanism for establishing the BH-host correlation. In the first part of my talk, I will present our efforts to find observational sign of the AGN feedback in young luminous AGNs. (2) While intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) is thought be cosmologically important class to understand the link between stellar mass black holes and SMBHs, it is extremely rare in the present-day Universe. In the second part of this talk, I will report a Gemini/GMOS-N IFU study of an ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 5252, which is a possible candidate of an off-nuclear non-stellar black hole.

  • During the year 2016 the newly installed NYSC (National Youth Science Center) 1m optical telescope was officially commissioned. Calls for future observational programmes were announced. During test observations we carried out an observational project aimed at follow-up observations of transiting extrasolar planets. To predict future transits we developed the "TransitSearch" code implemented in Python utilizing transit information from the Open Exoplanet Catalogue. During three nights in April and June 2016 we observed planetary transits of HAT-P-3b and TrES-3b. Preliminary light curves of the transit events are presented alongside with best-fit models. From this experience we plan to improve the optical alignment and photometric performance by operating the 1m NYSC telescope in a strongly out-of-focus mode for transit observations.

  • Formation processes of high-mass stars have been long-standing issues in astronomy and astrophysics. This is mainly because of major difficulties in observational studies such as a smaller number of high-mass young stellar objects (YSOs), larger distances, and more complex structures in young high-mass clusters compared with nearby low-mass isolated star-forming regions (SFRs), and extremely large opacity of interstellar dust except for centimeter to submillimeter wavelengths. High resolution and high sensitivity observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths will overcome these observational difficulties even for statistical studies with increasing number of high-mass YSO samples. This review will summarize recent progresses in high-mass star-formation studies with ALMA such as clumps and filaments in giant molecular cloud complexes and infrared dark clouds (IRDCs), protostellar disks and outflows in dense cores, chemistry, masers, and accretion bursts in high-mass SFRs.

  • In 2002, a new solar spectroscopic system with the Coelostat type has been installed at Korea Astronomical Observatory. It was designed to observe solar spectra in the range from 3000 to 8000${\AA}$ with the spectral resolution of 1${\AA}$/mm. The system is composed of a 40cm diameter Coelostat with 9m focal length, spectroscopic system with 600groove/mm grating, and a IK ${\times}$ IK CCD detector. By developing observational softwares for this system, we have successfully observed solar Ha spectra. In this paper, we development of telescope control and observational softwares.

  • Terrace deposits are often encountered in portal areas and tunnels with low overburden. They are challenging to excavate considering their great mechanical and spatial heterogeneity and a very high stiffness contrast within the ground. Terrace deposits are difficult to characterize, considering that samples for laboratory testing are almost unfeasible to obtain, and laboratory tests may not be representative due to scale effects. This paper presents the approach taken for their characterization during the design stage and their posterior validation performed during construction. Lessons learned from several tunnels excavated on terrace deposits on the Bogota-Villavicencio road (central-east Colombia), suggest that based on numerical simulations, laboratory testing and tunnel system behaviour monitoring, an observational approach allows engineers to optimize the excavation and support methods for the encountered ground conditions, resulting in a more economic and safe construction.
