  • Passive control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing slotted plates and a porous plate over a cavity has been carried out. Effect of various slot configurations on the characteristics of the interaction has been observed. Pitot/wall surface pressure distributions and flow visualizations including Schlieren images, kerosene-lampblack tracings and interference fringe patterns over a thin oil-film have been obtained at the downstream of the shock interactions. For the streamwise-slot configuration, a local higher pitot pressure was noticed at the downstream of the interaction as compared with the case of no control, however, not much improvement in pitot pressure was observed for the spanwise-slot configuration.

  • In this study, the cold test and the numerical analysis were carried out according to the shape parameters of the test model in order to confirm the operation range of high altitude environment simulation test facility for the supersonic vehicle. The blockage ratio, angle and length ratio were considered as the design parameters. The blockage rate is expected to be limited in the region of more than 40% due to the normal shock and expansion fan. It was confirmed that the angle of model should be selected at the size of 45 degrees or less due to the influence of the strong shock wave. There was no difference in performance between the lengths of 8 times the model diameter. Finally, we obtained the performance database according to the shape parameters of the conical test model and confirmed the operable range of the semi-freejet type high altitude environment simulation test facility.

  • The experimental research on a high-altitude environment simulation of space launch vehicle is important for securing independent technologies with launching space vehicles and completing missions. This study selected an altitude of 65 km for the experiment environment where it exceeded Mach number of 6 after the launch of Korean Space Launch Vehicle(KSLV-II). Shock tunnel was used to replicate the flight condition. After flow establishment, in order to confirm aerodynamic characteristics and normal and oblique shockwaves, the flow verification was carried out by measuring stagnation pressure and heat flux of a forebody model, and shockwave stand-off distance of a hemispherical model. In addition, a shock-free technique to recover free-stream condition has been developed and verified. From the results of the three verification tests, it was confirmed that the flow was replicated with the error of about ${\pm}3%$. The error between the slope angle of inclined shockwave of the scaled down transition section model using the shock-free shape and the slope angle of the horizontal plate model, and between the theoretical and the experimental value of the static pressure of the model were confirmed to be 2% and 1%, respectively. As a result, the efficiency of the shockwave cancellation technique has been verified.

  • An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of shock waves on the supersonic hydrogen-air jet flames stabilized in the Mach 2.5 model scramjet combustor. This experiment was the first reacting flow experiment interacting with shock waves. Two identical $10^{\cire}$ wedges were mounted on the diverging sidewalls of the combustor in order to produce oblique shock waves that interacted with the flame. Schlieren visualization pictures, wall static pressures, and combustion efficiency at two different air stagnation temperatures were measured and compared to corresponding flames without shock wave-flame interaction. It was observed that shock waves significantly altered the shape of supersonic jet flames, but had different effects on combustion efficiency depending on air temperatures. At the higher air stagnation temperature and higher fuel flow rates, combustion of efficiency showed a better result.

  • An experimental study was conducted at a Mach number of 2.0 to investigate the buzz suppression method on an axisymmetric, external compression supersonic inlet. The inlet model has a fixed geometry with no internal contraction. The inlet configuration was altered by changing the cowling. Results show that source of buzz has been related to the existence in the flow field of velocity discontinuity across a vortex sheet which originates from a shock intersection point. With external compression inlet, buzz can be suppressed by positioning the oblique shock slightly inside or outside of the cowl.

  • Exter ballistics of a typical high-speed projectile is studied through a flow-visualization experiment and an unstructured grid Navier-Srokes computation. Experiment produced a schlieren photograph that adequately shows the characteristic features of this complex flow, namely two kinds of oblique cone shocks and turbulent wake developing into the downstream. A hybrid scheme of finite volume-element method is used to simulate the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stok- es solution on unstructured grids. Osher's approximate Riemann solver is used to discretize the cinvection term. Higher-order spatial accuracy is obtained by MUSCL extension and van Albada ty- pe flux limiter is used to stabilize the numerical oscillation near the solution discontinuity. Accurate Gakerkin method is used to discretize the viscous term. Explict fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used for the time-stepping, which simplifies the application of MUSCL extension. A two-layer k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent wakes accurately. Axisymmetric folw and two-dimensional flow with an angle of attack have been computed. Grid-dependency is also checked by carrying out the computation with doubled meshes. 2-D calculation shows that effect of angle of attack on the flow field is negligible. Axi-symmetric results of the computation agrees well with the flow visualization. Primary oblique shock is represented within 2-3 meshes in numerical results, and the varicose mode of the vortex shedding is clearly captured in the turbulent wake region.

  • Numerical simulations of flows in an axisymmetric supersonic inlet with bleed regions were performed. For the simulations, the existing code which solves the RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and 2-equation turbulence model equations was transformed to axisymmetric form and bleed boundary condition was applied to the code. In this paper, the modified code was validated by comparing the results against an experimental data and other computational results for flow on a bump and over an oblique shock with bleed region. Using the code, numerical simulations were performed for the flow in the inlet with multiple bleed regions.

  • A numerical study was conducted to investigate the performance characteristics of a STED with various pressure ratios (PRs) and cone shapes. Due to momentum loss, the pressure in vacuum chamber increased with cone angle for a PR of 75. Also, the STED is started between PRs of 36 and 37 in the case of a cone angle of $15^{\circ}$ and a blockage ratio (BR) of 15%. The results for various PRs and cone shapes are presented, and the optimal cone shape is found to have a cone angle of between $5{\sim}20^{\circ}$ and a BR of between 15~40%.
