  • Motion synchronization between developed real and virtual robots for object recognition and target tracking is introduced. ASUS's XTION PRO Live is implemented as a sensor and configured to recognize walls and obstacles, and perceive objects. In order to create virtual reality, Unity 3D is adopted to be associated with the real robot, and the virtual object is controlled by using an input device. A Bluetooth serial communication module is used for wireless communication between the PC and the real robot. The motion information of a virtual object controlled by the user is sent to the robot. Then, the robot moves in the same way as the virtual object according to the motion information. Through motion synchronization, two scenarios, which map the real space and current object information with virtual objects and space, were demonstrated, yielding good agreement between the two spaces.

  • Shadow removal plays a key role for the pre-processing of image processing techniques such as object tracking and detection. With the advances of image recognition based on deep convolution neural networks, researches for shadow removal have been actively conducted. In this paper, we propose a novel method for shadow removal, which utilizes self attention distillation to extract semantic features. The proposed method gradually refines results of shadow detection, which are extracted from each layer of the proposed network, via top-down distillation. Specifically, the training procedure can be efficiently performed by learning the contextual information for shadow removal without shadow masks. Experimental results on various datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed method for shadow removal under real world environments.

  • Image processing is playing an important part in automation and artificial intelligence systems, such as object tracking, object recognition and classification, and the importance of IoT technology and automation is emphasizing as interest in automation increases. However, in a system that requires detailed data such as an image boundary, a precise noise removal algorithm is required. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a filtering algorithm based on the pixel value distribution pattern to minimize the information loss in the filtering process. The proposed algorithm finds the distribution pattern of neighboring pixel values with respect to the pixel values of the input image. Then, a weight mask is calculated based on the distribution pattern, and the final output is calculated by applying it to the filtering mask. The proposed algorithm has superior noise removal characteristics compared to the existing method and restored the image while minimizing blurring.

  • Thickness is a commonly used parameter in product design and manufacture. Its intuitive definition as the smallest dimension of a cross-section or the minimum distance between two opposite surfaces is ambiguous for intricate solids, and there is very little reported work in automatic computation of thickness. We present three generic definitions of thickness: interior thickness of points inside an object, exterior thickness for points on the object surface, and radiographic thickness along a view direction. Methods for computing and displaying the respective thickness values are also presented. The internal thickness distribution is obtained by peeling or successive skin removal, eventually revealing the object skeleton (similar to medial axis transformation). Another method involves radiographic scanning along a viewing direction, with minimum, maximum and total thickness options, displayed on the surface of the object. The algorithms have been implemented using an efficient voxel based representation that can handle up to one billion voxels (1000 per axis), coupled with a near-real time display scheme that uses a look-up table based on voxel neighborhood configurations. Three different types of intricate objects: industrial (press cylinder casting), sculpture (Ganesha idol), and medical (pelvic bone) were used for successfully testing the algorithms. The results are found to be useful for early evaluation of manufacturability and other lifecycle considerations.

  • Recently, the spread of deep learning environments has increased the importance of dataset generation. In this paper, we aim to design and implement a method for capturing rotating images of objects and performing object tracking on them for efficient dataset generation. The method implemented in this paper is to obtain image data by rotating objects to capture multiple angles of objects, detect and track objects through background removal and difference image processing techniques, showing them on screen to monitor object tracking results in the current frame. It was then implemented to return object location data within the image for use as a dataset.

  • This paper presents a progressive algorithm that not only can narrow down the search domain in the course of face identification but also can fast reconstruct various 3D objects from a sketch drawing. The sketch drawing, edge-vertex graph without hidden line removal, which serves as input for reconstruction process, is obtained from an inaccurate freehand sketch of a 3D wireframe object. The algorithm is executed in two stages. In the face identification stage, we generate and classify potential faces into implausible, basis, and minimal faces by using geometrical and topological constraints to reduce search space. The proposed algorithm searches the space of minimal faces only to identify actual faces of an object fast. In the object reconstruction stage, we progressively calculate a 3D structure by optimizing the coordinates of vertices of an object according to the sketch order of faces. The progressive method reconstructs the most plausible 3D object quickly by applying 3D constraints that are derived from the relationship between the object and the sketch drawing in the optimization process. Furthermore, it allows the designer to change viewpoint during sketching. The progressive reconstruction algorithm is discussed, and examples from a working implementation are given.

  • Spatial database systems in client-server environment have network overload due to the large amount of spatial data transmission. Users use the window query that loads partial region of a whole map for quick response time in the environment. A series of window query such as screen movement, enlargement or shrinkage requires data in similar region and this increases network overload by re-transmitting the same data in intersected region with the earlier transmitted region. Removing the transmitted data from query results can solve this problem. In this paper, we design and implement a spatial object manager in order to remove the intersected region occurred by a series of window query. The spatial object manager manages the object identifiers of transmitted objects and removes transmitted objects from spatial objects of the query result by using the removal technique of the intersected region for the transmission and comparison. We utilize GEOMania Millennium server, an open client-server spatial database system, as spatial object manager in this paper. The result of the performance evaluation shows that the spatial object manager removes the transmission of the data redundancy, reduces network overload and improves the overall system performance.

  • Electrolytic polishing is the anodic dissolution process in the transpassive state. It removes non-metallic inclusions and improves mechanical and corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Electrolytic polishing is normally used to remove a very thin layer of material from the surface of a metal object. An electrolyte of phosphoric, sulfuric and distilled water has been used in this study. In the low current density region, there can be found plateau region and material removal process and leveling process occur successively. In this study, an electrochemical polishing process using pulse current is adopted as a new electrochemical polishing process. In electrochemical machining processes, it has been found that pulse electrochemical processes provide an attractive alternative to the electrochemical processes using continuous current. Hence, this study will discuss the electrochemical polishing processes in low current density region and pulse electrochemical polishing.

  • Injection molding is a flexible production technique for the manufacturing of polymer products, but introduces residual stresses. Residual stresses in a structural material or component are those stresses which exist in the object without other external loads. The layer removal and hole drilling method are used for the measurement of residual stress in injection molded polystyrene part. The hole drilling method is potentially more flexible for determining residual stress in complex geometries and can be used as an adoptable technique for the measurement of residual stress in polymeric materials. Results obtained by experiments agree with each other.
