Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the adherence to diabetes control recommendations (blood glucose testing, medication, diet, exercise) in patients with type 2 diabetes at home and to analyse the correlation between adherence and blood glucose level. Method: Participants, numbering 214, were recruited from the endocrinology outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital in an urban city. The data were collected by a self report adherence questionnaire. Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) was determined by the high-performance liquid chromatography technique and fasting blood glucose was analyzed by the glucose oxidase method. Result: Medication adherence was higher than diet or exercise adherence. The frequency of blood glucose testing was lower for middle school graduates than college graduates. Diet adherence was significantly lower for participants who were obese, who did not have a spouse, and who had hyperglycemia. Medication and diet adherence were negatively correlated with HbA1c. Conclusion: A diet education program should be developed for patients with type 2 diabetes who are obese, who do not have a spouse, and who have hyperglycemia.
Purpose: This ethnography was done to explore patterns of weight management behavior among adults using obesity clinics. Methods: The participants were 12 adults who were overweight or obese and 2 family members. Data were collected from iterative fieldwork in the obesity clinics of two hospitals. Data were analyzed using text analysis and taxonomic methods. Results: Weight management behaviors among participants varied according to the recognition of the body and motivation for weight control, Participants' behavior was discussed in the socio-cultural context of obesity. Patterns of weight management behavior among participants were categorized by focus: strategic self-oriented type including managements for the body as a social asset and for health, selective neglect type, and passive group value-oriented type including type dependent on others and managements for beauty. Conclusion: Participants' weight management behavior was guided by folk concepts of body and health. and constructed within the socio-cultural context. It is necessary for health care providers to understand physical and psychological problems arising from the repeated trials, excessive control of weight, and Western cultural discourse on beauty ideals among adults who are overweight or obese. Therefore, interventions should be tailored to address individual and community needs.
This study attempted to identify obese students' stress and coping method in middle and high schools. The data were collected from the total of 600 obese students from middle and high schools in Pusan. The author used a convenience sampling method. The data collection was done from March 2 to April 30. 2001. The analysis of the data was done with SPSS Win(10.0) for descriptive statistics. t-test. and ANOVA. The instrument used for the obese students' stress and coping method was a questionnaire developed by Kim. Yi-Soon and Kim. Young-Hae(200l). The tool was composed of 65 items (33stress items: 32coping method items) with the five-point Likert scale. The results were as follow: 1. The average score of stress was 2.49 (SD = .86) points in the male students. and 2.83(SD= .86) points in the female students. The subcategories were: (outward appearance), (boyfriend/girlfriend), (occurrence of an outbreak of a disease), (relationship within the family), (an obese appearance), (difficulty in exercise). The highest degree of stress came from 'an obese appearance' for the male students (mean=2.64. SD=0.87) and (mean=2.64. SD=0.87) for the female students. 2. The subcategories of the coping method were: (be concerned about other matters), (recreation activities), (self-violence), (relaxation), (hobby activities), (avoid a situation), (communication), (music), (negative behavior), (positive thinking). The highest degree of coping method were (recreation activities) in the male students (mean=3.07. SD=0.86) and (music) in the female students (mean=3.47. SD=1.01). 3. The results comparing stress with demographic variables were significant for gender (t=7.010. p=0.000). grades at school (F=2.918. p=0.02l), degree of obesity (F=5.205. p=0.006). grades (F=2.550. p=0.027). standard of living(F=8.277. p=0.000). the state of health (F=2.882, p=0.022), relationship with the father (F=4.790, p=0.001), relationship with the mother (F=6.080, p=0.000), and the educational level of the father (F=3.192, p=0.013). 4. The results comparing the coping method with demographic variables were significant for gender (t=4.597. p=0.000). These findings contribute to the understanding of the degree of stress and the type of coping methods of obese students in middle and high schools. Therefore, the result of this study aids in an effective nursing intervention to improve the mental health program for the obese.
Objectives Identification of individuals predisposed to obesity is an important issue for prevention and control of the obesity. It was reported that a high prevalence of obesity appeared in Taeumin among Sasang constitutions, but Enneagram personality-types has not been used to classify the patterns of obesity. These two classification methods were employed in combination in the current study, and it was analyzed whether the morbidity pattern of obesity can be characterized in further detail. Methods The subjects were 125 University students(62 males and 63 females) who answered both questionnaires for Sasang constitutions and Enneagram personality types. The obesity of students was classified by the obesity index and BMI. Results Only Taeumin group of Sasang constitutions was overweight, and the male of the group was overweight or obese. Analysis of the obesity index and BMI according to the Enneagram personality types showed significant differences(p<.05) between the types in the female group. These values were highest at the type 3 and lowest at the type 4. The physical indices according to both the centers of Enneagram and Sasang constitutions showed that only Taeumin female group had significant differences(p<.05) in the obesity index and BMI. Taeumin male group was overweight or obese in all centers of Enneagram and Taeumin female group was overweight or obese only in heart-center. Conclusions Diagnosis of the present data suggest that the classification of obesity patterns using Enneagram personality types in addition to Sasang constitutions is very useful to prevent and control the obesity.
Peripheral insulin resistance in obese/type II diabetes animals results from an impairment of insulin-stimulated glucose uptake into skeletal muscle. Insulin stimulate the translocation of GLUT4 from intracellular location to the plasma membrane. Soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors (SNAREs) is implicated in mediation of fusion of GLUT4-containing vesicle with the plasma membrane. Present study investigated regulatory effects of Rhodiola sachalinensis administration and exercise training on the expression of GLUT4 protein and SNAREs protein in skeletal muscles of obese Zucker rats. Experimental animals were randomly assigned into one of five groups ; lean control(LN), obese control(OB), exercise-treated(EXE), Rhodiola sachalinensis-treated(Rho), combine of Rho & EXE (Rho-EXE). All animals of exercise training (EXE, Rho-EXE) performed treadmill running for 8 weeks, and animals of Rho groups (Rho, Rho-EXE) were dosed daily by gastric gavage during the same period. After experiment, blood were taken for analyses of glucose, insulin, and lipids levels. Mitochondrial oxidative enzyme (citrate synthase, CS ; $\beta$-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase, $\beta$-HAD) activity were analysed. Skeletal muscles were dissected out for analyses of proteins (GLUT4, VAMP2, syntaxin4, SNAP23). Results are as follows. Exercise and/or Rhodiola sachalinensis administration significantly reduced body weight and improved blood lipids (TG, FFA), and increased insulin sensitivity. Endurance exercise significantly increased the activity of mitochondrial enzymes and the expression of GLUT4 protein, however, administration of Rhodiola sachalinensis did not affect them. The effect of exercise and/or Rhodiola sachalinensis administration on the expression of SNARE proteins was unclear. Our study suggested that improvement insulin sensitivity by exercise and/or Rhodiola sachalinensis administration in obese Zucker rats is independent of expression of SNARE proteins.
The purpose of this study was to develop an appropriate jacket pattern for obese women in 20s and 30s, providing a good fit and appearance. The results were as follows: among 3 kinds of patterns collected in order to develop a jacket pattern to fit the average body of an obese woman in 20s and 30s, a business-type pattern(which was comparatively evaluated as a good fit) was worn and revised so as to design a final research pattern with proper fitness and a good shape. The biggest problem of the existing pattern was may overall spares, especially many spares of bust size, waist measurement, hip circumference, all of which makes a bad appearance. Considering the results of a survey which indicates that young obese women like tight-fitting clothes, bust size was decreased from 8 cm to 6 cm, and their waist measurements were bigger compared to other age groups, so a total of 1.1 cm(with 0.3 cm in the front, back side, and 0.5 cm in the back waist) was decreased. The hip circumference was decreased by 2 cm from H/2+4 to H/2+2 cm, the quantity of front deflection was established as 1.5 cm in order to compensate for the coming off of the front side caused by the fat on the stomach.
This study determines the body size of preteen children and conducts questionnaire investigations into the awareness of real purchasers or parents of and satisfaction with children's clothes and fit, in order to provide the basic data for planning and setting up the size range for the preteens market in which the sales of children clothes are gradually increasing. The findings of this study are as follow: Analyzing the obesity of the children against the Rohrer index showed that almost 30% of the subjects were obese children and that it is necessary to research the sizes of the clothes for obese children. It was also found that older children selected a more appropriate clothe size. Investigations into the awareness of children on their body image found that there was a significant difference in the perception of body shape, body weight, shoulder breath, arm thickness, chest girt, waist girth, hip girth, and thigh thickness. Slim or standard type children had the greatest consideration for the length of clothes to purchase while obese children had the greatest consideration for bosom size and waist girth. However, in terms of the association between fitness and size selection, obese children did not select a bigger size but an appropriate one for their body. The findings show that it is imperative to develop appropriate size clothes for obese children.
This study focused on the comparison of the consciousness of middle age women's body image between self evaluation and others'. The respondents include 105 middle age women who evaluated themselves and 532 middle age women who evaluated others in there age group in Gwang-Ju. The Questionnaire was comprised of two components; Part One is consciousness of body-shape and Part Two is body cathexis (or a body preference). For data analysis, SPSS 10.0 program was generally used, and T-test, ANOVA, Scheffe-test were being conducted. The results of study were as follow; On consciousness of body shape, the items that exist difference of opinion on the comparison of the consciousness of middle age women's body-shape between self-evaluation and others' evaluation were total body fatness, upper body type, low arm girth, thigh girth in lean group, and crotch of pants length, ankle girth, calf girth, in normal group, and upper body type, lower body type in obese group. On a body-cathexis, the item were neck, buttocks, bust, posture in lean group(p<.05), and neck, upper arm, abdomen in normal group(p<.01), and waist, abdomen, weight distribution in obese group(p<.01).
This study aimed to analyze adult men's body sizes and shapes and suggest size specifications to provide preliminary data to academia and industries. A total of 814 adult men aged 30-44 were selected from the 7th Size Korea data, and 55 direct upper body measurement and calculation items were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. In individual Individual differences, thickness, circumference, and width were high, and height and length were low. Height above the waist base line and shoulder dimension decreased in early 40s age group, while height below the waist base line declined as age increased. In addition, buttocks shape changes were found in early 40s age group. According to factor analysis, 'upper body and upper-extremity horizontal size', 'torso height and upper extremity length', 'shoulder dimension', 'upper body length' and 'shoulder angle' were derived. Using clustering analysis, four different body types were classified: i) big abdomen with flat chest, ii) slender with big, raised shoulders, iii) dwarfish with small, droopy shoulders, and iv) obese with large shoulders. 'Slender with big, raised shoulders' was a typical body shape among men aged 30-44. In older participants, the 'big abdomen with flat chest' ratio was low, while 'obese with large shoulders' was more common. This study proposed size specifications by body type considering the above characteristics.
